The latest Past Our Prime podcast takes us to the heartland and the beginning of the changing of the guard in college basketball. 1975 would be the last season for John Wooden and his UCLA dominance, and the Indiana Hoosiers were set to claim their spot atop the college basketball world. They would go 31-1 in '75 and follow that up in 1976 with a perfect 32-0 and the first National Championship for Bobby Knight. In 1975, the Hoosiers had 4 All Big-10 players in Kent Benson, Quinn Buckner, Scott May and Steve Green... and yet on the cover of that February 3rd issue 50 years ago was none other than John Laskowski... The Super Sub. The senior guard from South Bend was the first guy off the bench for Coach Knight and a main reason for the teams success. Half a century later, he still can't believe he was the guy on the cover of SI. But Laskowski was emblematic of what his coach was preaching. A team-first attitude where you left your ego at the door and went to work doing whatever was needed to win. And they won a lot... 37 consecutive Big-10 wins in fact, still the most ever in conference play... by a large margin. Laskowski went on to play in the NBA, and then was an analyst for Hoosiers basketball for years and he says much of that is because of the legendary Knight. Much more than just a coach to Laskowski, Bobby Knight was a mentor and an impactful man for the rest of his life until his death in 2023. He negotiated Laskowski's NBA deal with the Bulls, helped him get his TV job for IU and got him into the movie Blue Chips starring Nick Nolte. Laz tells us about a side of The General we rarely saw... He tells us about an assistant on that team that went on to become the all-time winningest coach in college basketball history... and he tells us about how Notre Dame rescinded their scholarship offer to him and how devastating that was to him before it turned into a blessing of a lifetime. It's a great talk with a great guy that was the first one off the bench for Coach Knight and on the cover of SI in 50 years ago today but in the POP starting lineup. Welcome to another exciting episode of the Concrete Genius Podcast! I'm your host, Sauce McKenzie, and today we've got a lot to talk about. So, grab your favorite beverage, settle in, and let's dive right into it.In this episode, we're starting off with a heartfelt tribute to one of Indiana's all-time greats, Coach Bobby Knight. Known for his fiery personality and unparalleled coaching skills, Bobby Knight was a true icon in the world of basketball. I share my personal thoughts and memories of Coach Knight, discussing how he put Indiana on the map and gave us all a sense of pride and identity. But our conversation doesn't stop there. We delve into the complexities of being from Indiana, a place often overlooked and underestimated. Growing up in Gary, I always felt like I was on my own little island, not quite Chicago but definitely not part of the rest of the state. Bobby Knight, in his own unique way, made it cool to wear Indiana gear and put the state in the national spotlight. His personality, though sometimes brash, was undeniably dominant, much like my own approach to life.As a young child, I was drawn to great orators and storytellers like Coach Knight. His ability to captivate a room, regardless of whether you loved or hated him, was something I admired. Even now, I see parallels between his charisma and my own, and it reminds me that being confident in who you are is essential. We also discuss the impact Coach Knight had on the basketball world, particularly on his defensive strategies and attention to detail. I've had the privilege of learning from individuals who were part of his coaching tree, and the knowledge I've gained has helped shape my own coaching philosophy. But our conversation isn't limited to basketball. We explore the idea of personal growth and how emotions can sometimes get the best of us. We all have our flaws and imperfections, and Coach Knight was no exception. However, it's important to remember the positive contributions people make in their lives and the lives of others.I also touch on the challenges of coaching, particularly when it comes to developing young talent. Regardless of a player's background or level of skill, I believe in their potential to excel with the right guidance. It's not just about teaching basketball; it's about instilling confidence and helping them become the best version of themselves. In the latter part of the podcast, we shift gears to discuss some current sports news, including Dwight Howard's situation, Jimmy Garoppolo's benching, and the Raiders' move to Las Vegas. As a lifelong Raiders fan, I have some strong feelings about the team's future, and I'm eager to see how they perform in their new home.Lastly, I touch on my own coaching endeavors, including my upcoming season coaching girls' basketball. I have a passion for developing talent, and I'm excited to take on this new challenge. I believe in the power of skill development and the impact it can have on young athletes. So, whether you're a basketball enthusiast, a fan of Coach Bobby Knight, or just someone looking for some engaging conversation, this episode has something for everyone. Along with that, we discuss the legacy of Coach Knight after his passing, along with other basketball notes and topics.

(00:00 - 25:50) - Brian Noe is in for Jake Query, alongside Jimmy Cook the two open the show giving their memories of Bob Knight who passed away yesterday at the age of 83. Knight had his fans and detractors but as a coach had a fire that led him to be one of the best college basketball coaches of all time. Knight had a generational impact on the game from the players and assistant coaches he influenced. Jimmy places Knight on the Mount Rushmore of College Basketball coaches. Knight was a unique coach who was both ahead of and behind his time in multiple ways.   (25:51 - 45:52) - Former College head coach for Manhattan, St. John's, New Mexico and basketball commentator Fran Faschilla joins the show to reflect on the life of Bob Knight. He talks about how Coach Knight scouted his own team and then gave the information to them later. Fraschilla says if you beat Knight the right way, he'd shake your hand and it meant something. Fran believes that Knight did more to revolutionize coaching in basketball in the last 50 years than anyone else in basketball, alongside Dean Smith as well. A final story regarding Fran's time doing commentary with Knight. (45:53 - 48:17) - Brian plays a clip in regard to another coach that he believes also applied to Coach Knight and the fire he had as a coach and competitor.   (48:18 - 1:12:18) - Steh Greenberg of ESPN joins the program and gives his thoughts on the late Bob Knight. He says that while Knight was a very demanding coach, he always managed to pull the best out of his players and form good relationships with them. Greenberg says he was able to make a lot of players' lightbulbs go off and put the pieces together to make his players better. He acknowledges that coach Knight had his detractors and rightfully so, but says it always was with good intent. Greenberg recalls Knight's "Pain in the rear" story. Knight had a big amount of respect for coaches that came before him. He says that Knight's biggest legacy on basketball can be found in the size of his coaching tree. (1:12:19 - 1:24:04) - Audio from other coaches around sports and their thoughts on the passing of Bob Knight. Quinn Buckner, a former Knight player, shared his thoughts on his passing during the Pacers game last night saying that he will be dearly missed. Steve Kerr head coach of the Golden State Warriors said coach had a huge impact on the game, even as the center of attention for good and bad reasons. Multiple organizations from a variety of sports put statements out on the passing of Coach Knight. Although Jake Query could not be on the show today, he had a piece on Knight's legacy put up on 107.5 The Fan's website. (1:24:05 - 2:07:03) - The spot starts off with Jimmy and Brian talking back and forth on some Twitter threads regarding Bob Knight. Tim Brando of Fox Sport joins in mid-segment to reflect on the life of Bob Knight. Brando recalls a time in which he was thrown out of practice by Coach Knight. He and the coach had a very heated introduction to each other, but as Brando stood up for himself a mutual respect developed.   (2:07:04 - 2:22:40) - Matt Taylor, radio voice of The Colts joins Brian and Jimmy, to talk Colts vs. Panthers on Sunday. Before getting to that Brian asks Taylor for any of his memories regarding Bob Knight. Taylor says that childhood was all about trying to get to go see as many great basketball games as possible during IU's era of dominance. The Colts talk begins with Taylor reflecting on his knowledge of Frank Reich when he was a Colts coach. He thinks that it will be a tough game down to the wire, but the Colts will be hungry to try and snap a three-game losing streak. (2:22:41 - 2:37:35) - More talk between Jimmy and Brian on how Coach Knight was bigger than basketball. If you went anywhere in the world and said you were from Indiana, Bob Knight was the first name others brought up. Teams are constantly chasing the legacy of the 1976 Hoosiers. Will IU Football be playing with a little extra fire this week? Bob Knight launched Indiana on to the map during a time when smaller communities in Indiana needed it most. (2:37:36 - 2:42:16) - Wrap up talk and JCooks plays of the day.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

But Nebraska/Michigan State is at 34.5 for O/U, with the Huskers a 3.5 point favorite-Michigan State is the 125th ranked scoring offense in the country; Nebraska is 113th. Michigan State is 111th in total offense; Nebraska is 110th. Is it once again the first to 17…wins?
