Embarking on the journey of pursuing excellence is not just about achieving a destination; it's a commitment to continuous growth and refinement. Building resilience becomes an important companion on this path, as it equips us to navigate setbacks, learn from failures, and emerge stronger. A mindset that thrives on challenges transforms obstacles into opportunities, fostering adaptability, innovation, and a profound sense of accomplishment. Matt Lindland imparts his life's lessons, wisdom, and counsel to everyone listening today. Remember, strength is not defined by avoiding falls but by the resilience to bounce back stronger with every rise! Tune in as young leaders ask questions about life, personal growth, and more! Quotes: “I realized that I needed to surround myself with other people who were on that same journey, pursuing excellence.” – Matt Lindland “I was raised with a mindset that made me resilient. The tougher the challenge, the more determined I became.” – Matt Lindland "For me, it goes back to talking about, 'What am I in control of?' This is what I need to focus on. What can I influence? Okay, I'll influence that. And what is completely out of my control? I'm just going to have to let some of that stuff go." – Matt Lindland Takeaways: Surrounding yourself with fellow travelers on the same path to greatness fuels collective growth and inspiration. Embrace challenges as stepping stones. Look at them as fuel for your determination, not obstacles. Letting go of the uncontrollable is the art of finding peace in the midst of chaos. Conclusion: Striving to be excellent means always trying to get better. When things go wrong, being resilient helps us bounce back stronger. Seeing challenges as chances to learn and grow makes the journey toward excellence more exciting and rewarding.

“It's not wrestlers that have done well in MMA or are doing well in MMA. That is historically false. It is American wrestlers. Specifically because of the takedown. Knowing to hold a man down against his will, or vice versa, you get taken down, force it to get up and get free with a guy on top of you who's a trained killer who doesn't want you free. The standup and the ride is what separates. That's the toughness,” says Chael Sonnen, UFC Light Heavyweight and Middleweight championship contender and NCAA Division I All-American. And he had one MMA victory via Gogoplata choke and at this stage am still the only person in Australia to do so which puts him in the company of Nick Diaz. He was awarded a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt in 2017 by my coach, 4th Degree Black Belt Anthony Lange and has continued to train, teach and still compete in grappling competitions. I also had a renewed interest in American Folkstyle wrestling. His breakdowns and technical analysis videos have had high praise from Randy Couture, Matt Lindland, Karo Parisyan, Phil Davis and the coach of the Granby High wrestling school to name a few. In 2019, he started “The Sonny Brown Breakdown” podcast to have discussions on the training, teaching, health and education of mixed martial arts. Welcome to the 6th Round Retro Post-Fight Show, featuring a look back at UFC 49: Unfinished Business, (last week we covered UFC 84: Ill Will ‘Penn vs. Sherk’). This is the show that digs into the archives and gives you a comprehensive review of classic MMA events, that span as far back as UFC 1. Join Eddie Mercado & Victor Rodriguez of Bloody Elbow as they relive this UFC PPV (Pay-per-view) event this week, complete with results, analysis, and of course a few laughs. On August 21st, 2004, UFC 49: Unfinished Business ‘Vitor Belfort vs. Randy Couture III’, a small eight-fight PPV card, chock full of seven finishes & only one decision - which was split, which continued the UFC’s upward PPV trend with 80,000 Buys that weekend, meaning a live gate of $1,293,035 with 12,100 fans in attendance, went down from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. So, the main event that night showcased a Light Heavyweight Championship Fight. Vitor ‘The Phenom’ Belfort, was defending the title he had achieved by winning their last bout somewhat inconclusively due to a early strike opening a wicked cut on Couture’s eyelid at UFC 46: Supernatural, at just 0:49 in Round 1, which was just a few months back in January of that year. The rematch was one fo the most anticipated of the year. The Natural was entering the octagon with a 11-3 professional record against the man from Brazil, Couture was out to dethrone him in this trilogy bout making it 2-1 in his favor, having initially defeated Beltor at UFC 15: Collision Course in October, 1997. But on this night — “After a bloodbath of ground and pound the Doctor finally intervened. The photos snapped of Couture bathed in Belfort’s blood have become the signature images of “The Natural’ inside the cage.” On the main card we also had a performance from Chuck ‘The Iceman’ Liddell, who had recently stomped Mr. Tito Ortiz via Punches in just 0:32 of R2 at UFC 47: It’s On! back in November, 2003. This should really should have been the co-main event. Liddell was coming in on a solid 13-3 record, and simply destroyed his opponent, Vernon ‘Tiger’ White via a Punch at 4:05 of Round 1. Also that night, on the prelims card we got to watch Chris Lytle climb to a 17-10 record when he subbed his opponent, Ronald Jhun with a sweet guillotine choke at 1:17 of Round 2. We also had up-and-comer, Stockton bad boy, Nick Diaz, catching a loss due to a split decision against Karo ‘The Heat’ Parisyan early on in the night. Let’s take a look at the card, complete with fight results: Main Card: MAIN EVENT TITLE FIGHT: Randy Couture DEF. Again welcome one, welcome all, welcome you sitting there sipping your coffee or just getting out of the shower. I’m Jason Bryant, this is Short Time Shots, your mostly daily look at the wrestling scores and more from in and around the world of wrestling. I do have one question though, why are you listening in the shower? Before I get to the notables and daily news updates, we have three major dual meet events coming up this weekend - the 92 team NWCA National Duals, which its official name would take up an entire show - and the 40th annual Virginia Duals, the tournament that led me to the sport of wrestling and the Budd Whitehill Duals in Pennsylvania. But before we talk about that, here’s what happened Tuesday. In Duals: A pair of Division I duals came in the expanded MAC, where Kent State topped SIUE 25-15. Kent State picked up falls from Colin McCracken and Spencer Berthold at 197 and heavyweight to scream back from a 15-13 deficit with those two bouts to go. In the nightcap, SIUE drove east to Clarion and fell to the Golden Eagles 30-13. Brock Zacherl defeated Tyshawn Williams 3-1 in sudden victory at 149. In Division III, Alma beat Trine 42-9. Olivet beat Adrian 21-12. North Central prepared for the National Duals by blanking Elmhurst 46-0. Ohio Northern beat Mount St. Joseph 27-17 a day after Ohio Northern head coach Ron Beaschler had amazing seats at the Ohio State dual. UW-Platteville topped UW-Eau Claire 24-20 in a match that featured 12 exhibition bouts. This is one awesome thing about Division III. It might be a pain in the ass for the event staff, but this is one of the key ways D3 kids get more mat time, especially the non-starters. NAIA Thomas More knocked off Division III Muskingum 38-14. Best name of the night goes to Thomas More’s Wilder Wichman, he registered a fall at 3:38 at 157 pounds, one of four falls for the Saints on Tuesday. The fastest, though, went to Zach Dunn, who picked up the six in 12 seconds. Keeping it NAIA, Graceland beat William Penn, the school, not the actual person, 43-12. Montana State-Northern was at Dickinson State and the Lights came away with a 32-21 win over the Blue Hawks. Notables on the Docket: In Division II, Seton Hill is at Shippensburg, Emmanuel is at Belmont Abbey, for some reason UNC Pembroke is going out to Kansas to take on Fort Hays State while American International will face Division III New England College and Trinity up in Connecticut. In Division III, Coast Guard is at WPI, McDaniel is at Waynesburg, Hunter is at Scranton and Thiel is at Case Western Reserve. In the NAIA, Briar Cliff hosts Midland, Bethany (Kan.) takes on York (Neb.), while Morningside heads to Jamestown (N.D.). One dual that’s scheduled on the women’s side where St. Mary (Kan.) will face Central Methodist. Now to the Duals Previews. The full NWCA preview here can be found at NWCAonline.com Virginia Duals information at VirginiaDuals.com Lycoming’s Bud Whitehill Duals is also something to keep an eye on with 16 teams from Division III scrapping. FROM THE DWN: Normally, there isn’t much in the way of hard news that comes out of the wrestling coaches weekly press conferences, especially at Penn State, where much of the information is guarded. Well, every outlet that covers Penn State wrestling on the regular is abuzz - and not in a good way - about the revelation Kyle Conel and Anthony Cassar are done for the year, according to head coach Cael Sanderson. Both have battled injuries their entire career. Shakur Rasheed is expected to go 197 while Sanderson announced Seth Nevills’ will get the go at 285. Link via InterMat, since all the stuff from the Centre Daily Times was paywalled. There is one from the Daily Collegian, though. A few changes in the NWCA Division I Coaches Poll, most of them coming as a result of Ohio State’s 17-16 win over Arizona State on Monday where stalling might have been called as inconsistently in a dual as I can remember. Yes, I’m rarely critical of officiating publicly, but as I sit back and watch, I can’t help but wonder where some consistency is. I don’t care who wins duals like this - I want to be entertained by the sport I love. I was more pained than anything. By the way, Iowa still your unanimous No. 1. Little Rock features its wrestling twins from St. Louis, Jayden and Jaylen Carson. Jayden’s already got some solid wins this year at 125. Who is Indiana’s Donnell Washington? Find out with a Q&A from Indiana’s athletic website. Mount Union’s Jordin James was named a finalist for the Greater Cleveland Male Collegiate Athlete of the Year Award. That’ll be presented in two weeks. James was just the school’s third wrestler in school history to win an individual national title when he claimed the 133-pound title last year in Roanoke, Virginia. Matt Lindland’s January Camp report is up and out on FivePointMove.com, where there really aren’t participation trophies. Tony Rotundo makes a written appearance on the Home Mat Advantage with his thoughts about the rugged Doc Buchanan tournament in California. And finally, we’ve got another new wrestling program coming to the Southeast as Montreat College, an NAIA school in North Carolina, announced it would be adding wrestling. That came by their desks on Monday, but since I didn’t know where the school was, or how yet to say it, it didn’t make the news. There were 35 new teams announced in 2019, Montreat is the first of 2020. On The Network On The Mat does a Year in Review with is absolutely worth your time. The top notes, nuggets and clips from the show from Trackwrestling with Andy Hamilton and Kyle Klingman. Holy crap it’s cold. Like I know I live in Minnesota, but it’s November 12 and the daytime high wasn’t the issue, it was the five degrees this morning while getting the kids ready for school. I chatted with ODU wrestling coach Steve Martin this morning. The first thing he asked me was how the weather was. After an expletive-laced retort, I finally answered with the current state of the atmospheric conditions. You can get that update every day on my personal Twitter account at 9:30 a.m. Central Time. I moved to Minnesota for a job. I left Minnesota for a job. I came back to Minnesota due to the proximity of my wife’s family and the abundance of good wrestling in the midwest. It’s easier to do what I do from here than say, my hometown. This is Short Time Shots, a mostly daily look at the scores and more from the world of wrestling. I’m Jason Bryant. Dual Meets: Falls were the difference as Graceland earned the big six from Trey Heckadon, Brennan Swafford and Drew Sams to lift the Yellowjackets to a 24-18 win over Division III Simpson College on Tuesday. Missouri Baptist opened up the season with a 30-18 win over American Midwest rival Hannibal-LaGrange. Jordan Sanders and Quentin Lawrence with falls there for the Spartans. They’ve got spirit. Montana State-Northern got its first dual win of the season as longtime rival and current Cascade Conference foe Southern Oregon came to town and went home unhappy. Returning national finalist Isaac Bartel registered a fall in 90 seconds at 197 pounds to highlight the Lights victory - yes, they’re the LIGHTS. Get it, Northern … Lights. I can’t seem to find any release or note, but apparently William Penn beat Waldorf by forfeit. Ok then. The top-ranked team in the NAIA women’s division, Life University, knocked off Limestone 36-10 in that school’s first ever home dual. Alex Enriquez, Aysia Cortez and Gabby Hamilton secured falls for the Running Eagles. Yes, the RUNNING Eagles. Notables on the Docket for November 13: Cumberland University heads to Bristol to take on King, the University of the Ozarks will head to Little Rock to face Arkansas Baptist, Southern Oregon continues its Montana expedition by heading to Providence. In Pennsylvania, Shippensburg will head to Elizabethtown while Wilkes will head down the road to face the first-year program at Alvernia. A pair of duals in Ohio as Wilmington and Heidelberg will mix it up - YES, the STUDENT PRINCES of Heidelberg - and Thomas More, which went back to the NAIA this year, will face Ohio Wesleyan. In Sconny, that’s Wisconsin for the rest of yous, UW-Oskhosh will face off with UW-Eau Claire. Also in Wisconsin, a double header of men’s and women’s wrestling where Lakeland will face off with the first-year program at UW-Stevens Point before the men take to the mat and get reacquainted. FROM THE DWN: The first 23 teams in the NWCA Division I Wrestling Coaches Poll remained the same this week. Penn State, which won its 60th dual in a row, was No. 1 for the 34th straight week, while Army West Point entered the poll at No. 24, and Campbell and Purdue entered the poll, tied at No. 25. It’s the first time in school history Campbell has been ranked in the dual meet-based coaches poll, which dates back over 50 years. Davenport University in NCAA Division II announced it would become an associate member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference in wrestling along with the men’s lacrosse program. While Division II qualifies through regionals, there are a number of conferences that sanction wrestling - wrestling members in the conference include Bellarmine, Drury, Indianapolis, Lindenwood, Maryville, McKendree and Ouachita Baptist. Bellarmine will depart soon as the school will transition to Division I. Five Point Move returns with another blog feature from its Greco-Roman outposts, Todd Allen gives us The Williams Word, a breakdown and update of the Greco-Roman happenings at Williams Baptist in Arkansas. Site founder Tim Hands doesn’t disappoint as he also brings us Matt Lindland’s weekly report. Ben Askren and Matt Dernlan discuss the Jaydin Eierman transfer and the future of Regional Training Centers on the most recent RUDIS Wrestling Podcast. Indian Hills Community College picked up the first commitment in school history for the fledgling women’s program as IAWrestle.com reports Chloe Clemmons has committed to coach Cole Spree’s team. The 130kg Greco-Roman European Games champion, Kiryl Hryshchanka, was stripped of his gold medal after testing positive for an anabolic steroid. I’m not going to try to pronounce. Sure, Hyrshchanka, I can say that, but Dehydrochloromethyl-testosterone, not so easily. Georgia’s Iakobi Kajaia is now the European Games gold medalist. The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports a former Xavier High School wrestler and current University of Iowa student died on Monday according to an email distributed by the UI campus community. Jeff Vipond was a two-year captain of the Cedar Rapids Xavier High wrestling team. College journalism might be struggling some places, but at the University of Pennsylvania, it looks pretty fair to me, at least, from a wrestling standpoint. The Daily Pennsylvanian features freshman Michael Colaiocco, who’s already making an impact in Philly. The Knight Report, a Rivals-based Rutgers news site has posted that Peter Lipari, a 141-pound NCAA qualifier for the Scarlet Knights last season, has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal. He recently lost his wrestle-off to highly touted freshman JoJo Aragona. The report doesn’t go into much detail other than he’s in the portal. On The Network Chad Dennis brings Alex Meyer back on The MatBoss Podcast to talk about the upcoming Chattanooga vs. Iowa dual at Carver-Hawkeye and a number of things about the Hawkeye program from Meyer’s perspective as an alum. Key Links: Coach Matt Lindland YouTube Channel Instagram: @MLindland Facebook Twitter: @mattlindland ___ He’s an equestrian, business owner, politician, Olympic wrestler, video producer, MMA fighter, coach, husband, and father. It’s hard to imagine that one individual can wear so many hats, but Matt Lindland has proven time and time again that dreams are worth fighting for. He fell into wrestling in high school as a means of pursuing a more affordable sport than equestrianism. He fell in love with the sport and trained for several years before signing with the University of Nebraska. His career took off as he went undefeated in his first season in the NCAA and was invited to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. The following years were rich with competing internationally, growing his family, and even taking an opportunity to coach and mentor younger athletes at his Alma Mater. His Olympic opportunity came in 2000, though not without its own struggles. A misjudged match led to a long judicial process that eventually ended with a Supreme Court ruling, a silver medal in Sydney, and a new nickname - “The Law.” With the satisfaction of an Olympic medal in hand, Lindland diversified his endeavors to include stunt work, MMA fighting, white water rafting, and even local politics. He opened his own gym, returned to his love of equestrianism via a horse ranch, and was appointed the coach for the US National Greco-Roman Wrestling Team. As a coach, Matt believes that character and leadership development is essential to the health and performance of his athletes. He not only challenges them physically, but also emotionally and relationally to be the highest character, most well rounded individuals possible. Give, Grow & Be Grateful is my life's motto and I'm in the process of turning it into a book by documenting a large portion of it in podcast format. To get the most out of it, please make sure you start with this introduction episode and go through the episodes in order. Your involvement and input is important to the final product so please get involved (subscribe, comment below, and share). In this episode: I introduce you to the Give, Grow & Be Grateful podcast/book/concept so you know what to expect. I share a little bit of my story, who I am, why you should listen and why I'm passionate about helping you live your best life. Then I explain the next steps as well as my commitment to you. At the end of each episode I will give you a micro-action that will overtime help you develop positive pathways that will lead to success, happiness and fulfillment. Episode Notes: The Give, Grow & Be Grateful podcast/concept/book and explain how we’ll progress forward. Instead of writing a book I am speaking it in a podcast format, so you are getting the sneak preview before it’s published. I will be providing insight, strategies and stories that will help you create a vision for the future, reach your goals, master your mind and emotions.. and of course live a happier and more fulfilled life. A little background on myself. About 12 years ago… I was dead broke… and at one of the lowest points in my life. I had started a company called (ESP) Entertainment & Sports Productions and I was throwing Ultimate Fighting type events with Randy Couture and Matt Lindland (where I trained at Team Quest) and while it was a great experience and I had a lot of fun... I was raising an amazing 4 year old girl…it was Dec… and I was not not making enough money to be able to pay my bills let alone the mortgage on the house... or get Christmas presents for my daughter. I felt like a complete failure…as a man, as a father, as a provider… I remember….I broke down crying… But something also changed in me.. I didn’t want to be the person I felt like… so I decided to change. It wasn’t but three months later that I met the woman of my dreams… who I ended up Marrying and having our son… Later on in 2009.. I started Webfor, a creative and digital marketing agency that helps business elevate their brand online. Today we employ 15 people and our team has won multiple awards. I sit on multiple boards, volunteer my time and give generously… so what did I do? That is exactly what I’m going to share with you in the upcoming episodes. Together we can find where you want to be in the future and determine what choices you need to make now to get there. My commitment to you. I will be producing a new episode each week for 52 weeks or until I feel I’ve poured out my soul into this book. You will get 100% raw transparency from me. This is a passion project for me. I’m not doing this for profit. Any future proceeds that come from this will go towards non-profits that support our youth. In fact my company, Webfor is sponsoring the Toast for Teens event hosted by the Boys and Girls Club of SW WA coming up in a few weeks. How can you support the show, help others and help yourself going forward? First, make sure you subscribe. Please share the show on social and if a specific episode or comment resonates with you, please comment and/or share that episode with others. At the end of each episode I will ask you to take what I call a micro-action. This is something small that will not take much time on your part, but overtime all of these micro-actions will act like a snowball rolling down a hill and you will gain momentum towards your goals. A commitment I ask of you is that you take the minute or two to do this small micro action. Today’s micro-action - Subscribe to the show and either listen to the first episode or set a time that you’re going to listen to it. Easy peezy… right!

Download the action plan here: http://jimharshawjr.com/action/ In this 17th episode of Wrestling with Greatness host Jim Harshaw interviews Matt Lindland, current USA Wrestling Greco Roman National coach, entrepreneur, whitewater rafting champion, actor, politician and UFC veteran . Matt’s insight into success comes from his experience in multiple arenas. His methodology is clear, concise and actionable. Here’s a little background. Matt wrestled for Clackamas Community College where he won the Junior College National Championship. He followed that with a career at Nebraska where he was ranked as high as #1 in the nation and finished the season 36-1, losing only the first round of the NCAA tournament. He then went on to an amazing senior level career winning Olympic and then World Silver medals in 2000 and 2001. For these accomplishments, Matt was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. After wrestling, he went on to a successful MMA career winning 10 fights in the UFC. He’s also an entrepreneur. He opened Team Quest, a gym based out of Oregon, with wrestling and MMA legend Randy Couture. As a trainer and coach, he took over 20 individuals from zero fights to the UFC. As if that’s not enough, he’s a politician. He ran for the Oregon House of Representatives where he won the primary but lost narrowly in the general election. There’s a documentary about Coach Lindland’s life called “Fighting Politics.” Finally, he’s a nationally competitive whitewater rafter, having won the Western Whitewater Championship Series six times. Let's connect: Website | Facebook | Twitter About Your Host Jim Harshaw My name is Jim Harshaw. You and I were both wrestlers once so we’re coming from the same place, which is a good place for us to start. And I know where you’re at. You’re working hard and qualified for what you do but you aren’t getting what you want. You have plans on getting to the C-suite or launching a business but ultimate success seems as far away today as ever. You’re at the right place because you can get there from here. And I can help. Who I Am I’m a speaker, author and former Division I All American wrestler that helps motivated former wrestlers reach their full potential by getting clarity on their what they really want and taking agressive action to lead their ideal life. I’m a husband and father of four. And I’m a serial entrepreneur. I’ve launched multiple successful businesses as well as the obligatory failed one. I’ve been the executive director of a non-profit and have raised millions of dollars. I’ve worked in sales. I’ve even been a Division I head coach. While I was born in a blue-collar home I have spent my life surrounded by Olympians, CEO’s and millionaires. Jim Rohn said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” I’ve been lucky. I’ve learned the habits of successful people and guess what. You’re just like them. I know because I know your type. You’re programmed for hard work, which is a prerequisite for success, but you’ve never been shown how to use what you know to create the life you want with the tools you have. I will show you how. Why You are Here You were a wrestler. You’ve trained and competed in the world’s toughest sport. You’ve set goals and maybe even set records. You’ve definitely failed and you’ve at some point found yourself questioning if you were on the right track. You need to understand this: You are far more prepared to succeed than those who’ve not trained, competed, struggled and overcome like you have. That’s the value of your education as a wrestler. You are prepared to be as successful as your wildest dreams will allow. Here I will teach you, with the help of brilliant minds that have been shaped by the learning that takes place in our sport, to be who you want to be. I sense that you want this because you have read this far. To take the next step today, click here. FOLLOW JIM Website | Facebook | Twitter

Welcome to the World Wrestling Resource Podcast, we're joined today as we start looking towards the wrestling season and the upcoming World Championships with Jon McGovern, head coach at the University of Dubuque and two-time NCAA Division II champion, Terry Brands Freestyle World Champion and Associate Head Coach at the University of Iowa and Dennis Hall, Greco-Roman World Champion. Before we get into our discussion today, we'll pitch this to Coach McGovern to give you an understand of what the World Wrestling Resource is and the benefits of jumping on board with WWR -- Moving into our coaching discussion. Coach Brands, what should coaches be doing this fall to prepare for the season? -- Regardless of the program, what are the key points that college coaches need to understand about their athletes, whether it be Division I, Division III, NAIA? -- Coach McGovern, being at the Division III level, what differences do you have to deal with when coaching your athletes. You've got guys who aren't scholarship athletes, you might even have some playing other sports. You've got an interesting perspective, since you've also coached at the Division I level as well. Coach Hall, youth wrestling and wrestling below the high school level has exploded with big participation numbers, USA Wrestling has record membership numbers, so there are a lot more kids wrestling. What can youth parents and coaches do for their sons and daughters to prepare for the upcoming season? Now we move to the upcoming World Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The U.S. is bringing an extremely exciting team to the mats in freestyle. Coach Brands, before we talk about the individual athletes, as a whole, you were coming through in an era with some great teams. How do you think today's World Team compares to some of the great teams you were on in the past? -- Specifically about the two athletes from the Hawkeye Wrestling Club, you've got a first-timer in Tony Ramos and you've got a three-timer with Brent Metcalf. It might be a loaded question to ask what do you expect from them, but ... well, what do you expect from them? Dennis, we've got a new national team coach in Greco-Roman with Matt Lindland. The U.S. hasn't won a medal in Greco-Roman wrestling since Dremiel Byers won silver back in 2009. What does Coach Lindland have to do to get our World and Olympic Teams to start winning medals again? -- This year's team has a mix of experience and youth. Spenser Mango is on his seventh-straight World or Olympic Team, he was fifth last year. Justin Lester is a two-time world medalist and he is taking advantage of the new weight class at 71kg. Then there's repeat World Teamers as well with Andy Bisek, Jordan Holm, Robby Smith.
