Many of us fall into L&D - and some of us make sacrifices in order to do so. At a time when many of us have faced layoffs and unexpected setbacks, we wanted to spotlight career journeys that had tough times and what our guests did to overcome these. In this episode, I'm speaking with Jennifer Sutherland, Global Leader of Culture, Learning & Development at Trustwave, about her incredible career and the lessons we can all learn from her. KEY TAKEAWAYS Very few people follow a linear path into L&D. This is good because they bring varied business skills to the role. If you do not have any training or L&D experience to put on your resume seek it out. Jennifer shares several ways to do that. Be authentic, especially during presentations, and develop your own style. Listen to feedback but recognise who the outliers are and factor that in before deciding whether to pivot. Take your time when switching roles. Lots of L&D professionals inadvertently end up in a role that is not a good fit for them. Use other L&D professionals as a sounding board and help each other. Understand how humans learn and stay up to date with the research. Stay curious and stay up to date with the tech. Build good relationships with all stakeholders and network. BEST MOMENTS “You created the opportunity that helped you gather the experience that you needed to be taken seriously by those L&D hiring managers.” “Words matter … how you fill in the silence is so critical.” “Frankly, that role was not the right fit for me.” “The career path that I'm on looks bananas, but gave  me all these skills, resources, knowledge, community and networks.” “Create your own sandwich of tech to create what you need.” “The world limits you already. Don't be the one that limits yourself.”   Jennifer Sutherland Bio Jennifer is the Global Leader of Culture, Learning & Development at Trustwave, where she is responsible for driving employee engagement and developing enriching learning experiences. Her team focuses on initiatives such as change management and sales enablement, essential for a dynamic global workforce across EMEA, APAC, and North America. A boy, who you will now know, is very close, a boy who has a story behind him of struggle, of overcoming and who entered the Draft this year, and now he has his chance. His name is Julius Wilkerson, he's a LB, from Davenport University. And I think he fits or can fit perfectly in Tampa. A type of LB that is becoming more and more abundant in the NFL, and the need that Tampa Bay has for this type of player, makes this opportunity that Julius has, a golden opportunity. I know you like this kind of story, I know you like the Buccaneers, and I know you like linebackers with aggression, with vision and with that something that only the great ones have. I assure you Julius has that something.

That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.”   Ephesians 2:8–10 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God‘s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.“   Ephesians 2:13 “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.“   Philippians 1:6 “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

Chicago had to remove shortstop Tim Anderson in the sixth inning with left knee soreness after he collided with a baserunner. Cease, the American League Cy Young runner-up last season, gave up three runs but only one was earned after three errors by the White Sox. Cease allowed three hits with six strikeouts in five innings. Kenta Maeda surrendered four runs on eight hits in six innings for Minnesota. Cubs 3, Mariners 2 – F/10 – Hoerner’s single in 10th inning lifts Cubs past Mariners 3-2 Nico Hoerner’s soft single off Matt Brash with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning scored pinch-runner Nick Madrigal and gave the Chicago Cubs a 3-2 win over the Seattle Mariners. Jarred Kelenic hit a game-tying home run off closer Michael Fulmer with one out in the ninth that wiped out a sterling performance from Cubs left-hander Drew Smyly. Smyly pitched five innings of two-hit ball and struck out seven. Cubs center fielder Cody Bellinger fouled off four consecutive pitches before hitting a game-tying double in the fourth to snap Luis Castillo’s scoreless streak at 14 2/3 innings. Eric Hosmer followed later with an opposite-field single to left that scored Bellinger. Hosmer is 12 for 18 lifetime against Castillo. Tonight Detroit (Manning 1-0) at Toronto (Manoah 1-0), 7:37 p.m.,        News/Talk/Sports 94.9 WSJM 7:10 Chicago White Sox (Lynn 0-1) at Minnesota (López 1-0), 7:40 p.m. Seattle (Flexen 0-1) at Chicago Cubs (Wesneski 0-0), 7:40 p.m. MLB – White Sox trade reliever Ruiz to Diamondbacks for $100,000 The Chicago White Sox have traded veteran reliever José Ruiz to Arizona on Sunday in exchange for $100,000. The White Sox designated the 28-year-old Ruiz for assignment following a difficult start to the season. Ruiz allowed nine runs on eight hits with four walks and three strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings across four appearances for Chicago. Ruiz spent five-plus with the White Sox, who claimed him off waivers from San Diego in December 2017. Ruiz went 3-7 with a 4.53 ERA in 177 appearances for Chicago. NHL – National Hockey League Last Night Dallas Stars 6, Detroit Red Wings 1 Minnesota Wild 4, Chicago Blackhawks 2 Stars 6, Red Wings 1 – Pavelski records 1,000th career point as Stars trounce Wings Joe Pavelski notched his 1,000th career point with a second-period goal, Roope Hintz had a goal and three assists and the Dallas Stars thumped the Detroit Red Wings 6-1 on Monday night. Pavelski, playing in his 1,248th game, became the 10th American-born player to reach the milestone when he tipped Miro Heiskanen’s shot from the point. The Stars, who have won four straight, tied idle Colorado for the Central Division lead with two games remaining. Jason Robertson supplied a goal and two assists. Esa Lindell, Ty Dellandrea and Jamie Benn also scored for the Stars. David Perron scored for the Red Wings, who were playing their home finale. Wild 4, Blackhawks 2 – Johansson helps Wild rally for 4-2 victory over Blackhawks Marcus Johansson scored two goals late in the third period, and the short-handed Minnesota Wild beat the Chicago Blackhawks 4-2. Matt Boldy and Gustav Nyquist also scored for Minnesota in its second consecutive win. Filip Gustavsson made 39 saves in his second straight start. Johansson’s 18th goal — a wrist shot on a 2-on-1 with 6 minutes left — tied it at 2. It was the Wild’s 14th short-handed goal of the season, breaking the franchise record. Johansson then put Minnesota in front when he got a nice pass from Boldy and beat Alex Stalock on the glove side with 3:13 left. Tonight Detroit Red Wings at Carolina Hurricanes, 7:00 p.m. Chicago Blackhawks at Pittsburgh Penguins, 7:30 p.m. NBA – National Basketball Association Tonight NBA Play In Tournament Atlanta Hawks at Miami Heat, 7:30 p.m. Minnesota Timberwolves at Los Angeles Lakers, 10:00 p.m. NBA – Play-in tournament starts Tuesday, giving 8 teams new life Getting to the play-in tournament probably wasn’t the goal of any team when training camps opened back in September. But it beats the alternative. There are 12 teams with playoff spots right now, 10 teams whose seasons are over and eight teams with a second chance. The play-in tournament starts Tuesday, with Atlanta going to Miami and Minnesota visiting the Los Angeles Lakers. The winners of those games will be going to the postseason. Oklahoma City goes to New Orleans and Chicago visits Toronto on Wednesday for elimination games. The winners there move on to face the loser of Tuesday’s games in another win-or-go-home contest. NBA – Pistons search for coach, hope to draft Victor Wembanyama The Detroit Pistons are searching for a coach and hoping their new leader has Victor Wembanyama in the lineup. Detroit closed its fourth straight season and 12th in 14 years without a postseason appearance on Sunday with a lopsided loss at Chicago. After finishing an NBA-worst 17-65, Dwane Casey announced he was stepping down with one year left on his coaching contract to accept a role in the Troy Weaver-led front office. Casey was hired by the Pistons in 2018 as the reigning NBA Coach of the Year led them to the playoffs in his first season with the franchise. WNBA – WNBA adding charter flights for playoffs, back-to-back games The WNBA is adding charter flights for the entire playoffs and back-to-back regular season games this year. The league announced Monday it will pay for all of the flights. The cost is expected to be around $4.5 million, according to a person familiar with the negotiations. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because details haven’t been publicly released. The league chartered for the WNBA Finals as well as for the road team in the Commissioner Cup championship game last year. As for Brittney Griner, the WNBA says it has plans for her travel but would like to keep them "confidential." WNBA – Boston heads to Fever as No. 1 pick in WNBA draft Aliyah Boston is the No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft, going to the Indiana Fever. It’s the first time that the Fever have had the top choice in the draft and they chose the South Carolina star. Boston, a three-time AP All-American who also was the Player of the Year as a junior, will solidify the post for Indiana. The Fever had the worst record in the league last season, going 5-31. Boston was one of four South Carolina players expected to be taken in the first two rounds of the draft. Minnesota took Diamond Miller with the No. 2 pick and Dallas drafted Maddy Siegrist with the third pick. NCAAMBB – Michigan State guard Tyson Walker returning for 5th season Michigan State standout Tyson Walker is returning for his fifth season. Walker announced his decision Monday with an Instagram post, giving a boost to coach Tom Izzo’s chances of contending for a title. The 6-foot-1 guard averaged a team-high 14.8 points and ranked second with nearly three assists per game. Walker attended Northeastern for two years before transferring and playing for the Spartans the past two seasons. He is eligible for a fifth season because the NCAA granted college athletes an extra year if they were enrolled two years ago when the COVID-19 pandemic began.
