If you enjoy skiing, you probably know it takes more than just some skis, boots and poles to slide down a hill. It also takes money, sometimes a lot of it. Tickets at Washington's big ski resorts run from $65 to $150 a day. That's not the case at Badger Mountain ski area in Central Washington. There, the price is a mere $15 a day. That's because the hill is a nonprofit entirely run by volunteers. Alex Rochester, KUOW's digital community outreach coordinator and resident skier, headed up to Badger Mountain to find out how this community keeps skiing ALIVE, in this report which originally aired in March 2023. The Columbia River is undoubtedly one of the most important rivers in the Northwest. Today, its irrigation provides water for the farms of Central Washington; it's a vital waterway for salmon; and it provides a critical source of hydroelectric power. The river is split between the U.S. and Canada, and its headwaters begin in British Columbia. For the last 60 years, one treaty -- the Columbia River Treaty -- has dictated how the two nations manage the river and its dams. But that treaty is quickly approaching an important deadline this September, and if nothing changes, terms in the treaty become less favorable to the United States. In the last month, stakeholders on both sides of the border have come to an "agreement in principle" on an update to the Columbia River Treaty. Negotiations over changes in the treaty have been in the works for the last 6 years. It's probably something you haven't heard about before – but it's a critical piece of the future of the Columbia River and everything that depends on it. This week Soundside's Libby Denkmann caught up on the treaty's latest with Nigel Bankes, professor emeritus of law at the University of Calgary. Evergreen State farmers have been producing more apples than anybody else in the country for the better part of a century. When the first apple seeds were planted at Fort Vancouver in the 1820s, the history of apple growing in the state of Washington was officially kicked off. Apples were one of the first crops that early farmers planted to eat themselves and to also sell to make a living. Orchardists in the 1890s realized that the Yakima, Wenatchee, and Okanogan valleys in Central Washington were suitable for growing apples. This discovery coincided with the introduction of large-scale irrigation in the region. Growers were now able to sell their fruit across the entirety of the West once railways were built. Apples from Central Washington were shipped all over the country throughout the 1920s and 1930s, and due to the great quality of these apples, they fetched a high price. The Red Delicious apple variety reigned supreme in Washington throughout the latter half of the twentieth century, but it is currently facing competition from a number of other kinds, including the Gala and the Fuji. Apples are expected to retain their dominance as the state's most important agricultural commodity well into the year 2020.Listen now to learn more about the most iconic crop produced in the Evergreen State to celebrate this year's Thanksgiving Holiday!A special thank you goes out to Al Hirsch for providing the music for the podcast, check him out on YouTube.Find merchandise for the podcast now available at: https://washington-history-by-jon-c.creator-spring.comIf you enjoy the podcast and would like to contribute, please visit: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/EvergreenpodIf you have any questions, episode ideas you'd like to see explored, or just have a general comment, please reach out at Historyoftheevergreenstatepod@gmail.comTo keep up on news for the podcast and other related announcements, please like and follow:https://www.facebook.com/HistoryoftheevergreenstatepodcastFind the podcast over on Instagram as well: @HISTORY_EVERGREENSTATEPODCASTYou can also find the podcast over on YouTube:http://www.youtube.com/@historyoftheevergreenstatepodThank you for listening to another Thanksgiving Special episode of the History of the Evergreen State Podcast!

In what was originally known as the Big Bend Country, Mansfield is located on a plateau in the center of the Central Washington wheatlands. The town was founded in 1889 and was given the name Mansfield after Robert E. Darling, who settled there in 1900. Mansfield was first served by a train, the Mansfield Branch Line, in 1909, and became a city in 1911. However, Mansfield's prosperity did not last. Fires in 1914 and 1922, a drought in 1917, and the Great Depression all had a lasting impact on the boomtown, despite the resilience of its residents.Listen now to learn more about this fascinating Evergreen State town!A special thank you goes out to Al Hirsch for providing the music for the podcast, check him out on YouTube.Find merchandise for the podcast now available at: https://washington-history-by-jon-c.creator-spring.comIf you enjoy the podcast and would like to contribute, please visit: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/EvergreenpodIf you have any questions, episode ideas you'd like to see explored, or just have a general comment, please reach out at Historyoftheevergreenstatepod@gmail.comTo keep up on news for the podcast and other related announcements, please like and follow:https://www.facebook.com/HistoryoftheevergreenstatepodcastFind the podcast over on Instagram as well: @HISTORY_EVERGREENSTATEPODCASTYou can also find the podcast over on YouTube:http://www.youtube.com/@historyoftheevergreenstatepodThank you for listening to another episode of the History of the Evergreen State Podcast!

Scientists at the University of Washington placed GPS collars on dozens of bobcats and coyotes and tracked their movements and behaviors in Northeast and Central Washington. The animals moved from areas uninhabited by humans into rural communities to escape being killed by wolves and cougars with whom they compete for food. But the strategy ultimately proved lethal, as the bobcats and coyotes were three to four times more likely to be killed by people than by those apex predators. Laura Prugh is an associate professor of wildlife ecology at the University of Washington and the lead author of this study which was published last month in the journal, “Science.” She joins us to talk about the research findings and what they say about the so-called “human shield effect” on predator-prey relationships observed in Yellowstone and other national parks.
Former Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Jon Kitna proved during his football career to be a winner and a leader. After playing three sports at Lincoln High School in Tacoma, Washington, Kitna walked on at Central Washington University (NAIA), earning the starting quarterback job as a true freshman. Kitna proved he was no fluke leading Central Washington to the NAIA Football National Championship his senior year. After earning a math education degree, Kitna was prepared to teach and coach at the high school level. But, instead, Dennis Erickson saw something in Kitna, signing him to the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent in 1996. After being waived and signed to the Seahawks practice squad, Kitna was allocated to the World League of American Football and the Barcelona Dragons. It was here that Kitna showed he had the makings to play in the NFL and would play in the league with the Seahawks, Bengals, Detroit Lions, and Dallas Cowboys. However, after finishing his pro career, Kitna started the job he thought was his future all along, becoming a high school coach, the position he holds today as the new head coach at Liberty Township (Ohio) Lakota East High School, where he'll coach his youngest son, Jamison Kitna, a Class of 2025 quarterback prospect who already holds double-digit offers from the likes of Baylor, Duke, West Virginia, Pittsburgh and more. Kitna joined In The Trenches with Dave Lapham, presented by First Star Logistics, to discuss his career, including what may surprise many as his most significant achievement in the game, and respect he has for former teammate Carson Palmer and what he's seen so far from current Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow.

If you enjoy skiing, you probably know it takes more than just some skis, boots and poles to slide down a hill. It also takes money. Tickets at Washington's big ski resorts run from $65 to $150 a day. That's not the case at Badger Mountain Ski Area in Central Washington. There, the price is a mere $10 a day. That's because the hill is a nonprofit, entirely run by volunteers. We can only make Soundside because listeners support us. Make the show happen by making a gift to KUOW:https://www.kuow.org/donate/soundside

In episode 70 of the Outdoor Minimalist podcast, we are talking about recycling! I've had a few guests on the show that have shed some light on recycling, but not quite to this depth yet. Today's guest, Amanda Close, is an expert in all things waste streams and is here to answer the question: what happens after we recycle? Amanda Close is the Education and Outreach Manager at Waste Loop and works with local communities, schools, and businesses to reduce, reuse, repair, repurpose, recycle and, most importantly, rethink their waste streams. Waste Loop is a 501(3)(c) nonprofit based in the Wenatchee Valley of Central Washington with a mission to inspire communities to transform their 'waste' into resources. They envision a world where the concept of 'waste' no longer exists. Along with his obligatory recap, we look forward to the summer tours of the Ice Age Floods' Zone from Montana to Central Washington. Then RC looks again at cosmic delivery systems for gasses that were present to ignite the devastating regional firestorms. How did people survive them? An extraordinary recounting by one Father in Peshtigo describes his brush with the transcendental “X Factor” and another child's vision of the Virgin Mary leads her to build a church that became a safe haven during the otherwise thoroughly catastrophic blazes.
