Please subscribe now for as little as 5$ and gain access to a community of over 750 awesome, curious, kind, funny, brilliant, generous souls Over the past thirty years, Governor Inslee has provided bold leadership at the local, state and federal levels that has demonstrated the powers of innovation and inspiration to move our communities forward. More recently, his leadership as the three-term governor of Washington State has led to unprecedented success in building a clean energy economy, fighting climate change, improving opportunities for working families and advancing progressive values of Washingtonians. Under Governor Inslee's leadership, Washington has consistently ranked as one of the best states for both working families and business growth. Washington's policies of constant innovation, openness to new ideas and a deep commitment to equity and inclusion are mutually supportive and demonstrably successful. Governor Inslee's leadership is deeply rooted in the values of Washington State. As a fifth-generation Washingtonian, who grew up in the Seattle area, he developed his environmental ethic hiking in the Cascade mountains and exploring tidepools with his parents. He worked his way through college operating bulldozers, married his high school sweetheart Trudi and graduated from Willamette Law School. He then established a successful law practice in the Central Washington town of Selah in 1976 where he and Trudi raised three sons and four acres of hay. After twelve years practicing trial law and prosecuting criminal cases, Governor Inslee's desire to make a difference was whetted by his co-chairing a campaign to build a new high school, which led him to serve in the Washington State House of Representatives for the 14th district, after an upset victory, one of several in his political career. Governor Inslee served in the U.S. House of Representatives representing Central Washington until his defeat in 1994, largely attributable to his vote to ban assault weapons. Following stints practicing law and serving as Director for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for the northwest, the Governor returned to Congress in 1999 representing the 1st District, becoming one of four people ever to represent two separate congressional districts. There he became notable as a leader of climate change issues and tech economic development matters and was a leading opponent of the Iraq war. During his term, he coauthored Apollo's Fire: Igniting America's Clean Energy Economy, a template for economic growth. Governor Inslee carried this vision into his unsuccessful but influential run for the presidency in 2019. His ideas became the basis of groundbreaking federal climate laws during the Biden administration. Throughout his three terms, Governor Inslee established Washington as a leading state for climate action and a beacon of progress: Created the Climate Commitment Act and successfully defeated an initiative to repeal it. Launched nation-leading policies related to 100% clean energy, clean buildings and clean transportation. The governor's climate efforts also support innovation through the launch of the Washington Clean Energy Fund, a Clean Energy Institute at the University of Washington, and the Institute for Northwest Futures at Washington State University. Promoted a more equal and just justice system. Governor Inslee placed a moratorium on Washington's death penalty, which was ultimately affirmed by the state Supreme Court due to its unequal and racially biased application, and it was subsequently struck from state law. He also enacted several justice system reforms such as the Marijuana Justice Initiative and Community Reinvestment Fund and has been recognized for his leadership on clemency and reentry. Led efforts to fully fund Washington's K-12 education system and a historic expansion of early learning. Led the transformation of Washington's behavioral health system with a significant expansion of community-based facilities, a new teaching hospital at the University of Washington and a new forensic hospital on the grounds of Western State Hospital. Defended access to reproductive health and gender-affirming care. Join us Monday and Thursday's at 8EST for our Bi Weekly Happy Hour Hangout! Today, we’re bringing you the best from the KUOW Newsroom... The August primary election has been certified, meaning Sara Nelson and Dionne Foster are the two official candidates for Seattle’s 9th city council seats. Their strategies to address drug addiction are quite different. Canadians are continuing to feel upset with America’s most recent political actions. Being right on the Canadian border, businesses in Blaine Washington are really feeling the pain. And data centers are coming to Central Washington towns. With them comes an economic boost, but also skepticism about what the centers can actually deliver for residents and how much harm they are causing the environment. What if the secret to building a truly loyal gym membership—or any recurring customer base—starts the moment someone tries to leave? That question struck me while talking with Blair McHaney, a trailblazing fitness industry leader who's spent more than 40 years reimagining how gyms can deliver customer (or, as Blair puts it, member) experience. Too often, fitness centers focus on sales at the expense of real loyalty, missing the deeper connection that gets members to not only return, but rave about you to others—even after they've canceled. In this episode of the Delighted Customers podcast, Blair reveals why retention isn't about holding onto credit cards, but about keeping (or regaining) a place in members' hearts and minds. We dive into actionable strategies for creating club experiences so powerful that over 50% of new signups are from people who used to be members—and choose to come back. Blair's insights are essential listening not just for those in the fitness industry, but for anyone who wants to operationalize customer experience in a way that drives lasting loyalty and real business results. His expertise in data-driven experience design, journey mapping, and hospitality is second to none. Whether you lead a gym, a bank, or a tech company, Blair will challenge the way you think about member lifecycle, operational excellence, and the critical role of small, human moments that delight customers. Here are three burning questions Blair answers on the show: Is it a myth that gyms just want to sell as many memberships as possible, hoping for high turnover—or is there a smarter, more humane way to build retention and lasting brand love? What are the often-overlooked operational “basics” (think: cleanliness, equipment repair, and front desk hospitality) that form the foundation for differentiation in a crowded industry? How do journey mapping and persona-driven training—far beyond standard SOPs—transform employee culture and drive a superior customer experience at scale? I invite you to listen, subscribe, and share this episode! Find it on Apple Podcasts and Spotify, or search for Delighted Customers on your favorite podcast platform. Meet Blair McKaney Blair McHaney is an entrepreneur, innovator, and CX educator with over 40 years of hands-on leadership in the fitness industry. He currently serves as President and CEO of MX Metrics, Medallia's fitness vertical partner, where he leads data-driven strategies to enhance member experiences across nearly 1,000 fitness clubs worldwide. Prior to that, Blair spent three formative years at Medallia as VP of Strategic Initiatives, where his operational expertise—not tech background—helped launch scalable approaches to customer and member experience management. He's also an owner of two successful fitness clubs in Central Washington, where he's pioneered a radically member-centered approach to retention, alumni creation, and frontline hospitality. Blair's journey is a testament to learning by doing: from journeyman carpenter to gym owner at age 23, to tech-enabled CX leader, he's obsessed with operationalizing experience. He's a champion of “alumni creation”—ensuring members who leave do so as fans, not detractors—and believes the greatest opportunities in fitness (and beyond) are found in reimagining processes, policies, and employee education to put the customer first. If you enjoy skiing, you probably know it takes more than just some skis, boots and poles to slide down a hill. It also takes money, sometimes a lot of it. Tickets at Washington's big ski resorts run from $65 to $150 a day. That's not the case at Badger Mountain ski area in Central Washington. There, the price is a mere $15 a day. That's because the hill is a nonprofit entirely run by volunteers. Alex Rochester, KUOW's digital community outreach coordinator and resident skier, headed up to Badger Mountain to find out how this community keeps skiing ALIVE, in this report which originally aired in March 2023. The Columbia River is undoubtedly one of the most important rivers in the Northwest. Today, its irrigation provides water for the farms of Central Washington; it's a vital waterway for salmon; and it provides a critical source of hydroelectric power. The river is split between the U.S. and Canada, and its headwaters begin in British Columbia. For the last 60 years, one treaty -- the Columbia River Treaty -- has dictated how the two nations manage the river and its dams. But that treaty is quickly approaching an important deadline this September, and if nothing changes, terms in the treaty become less favorable to the United States. In the last month, stakeholders on both sides of the border have come to an "agreement in principle" on an update to the Columbia River Treaty. Negotiations over changes in the treaty have been in the works for the last 6 years. It's probably something you haven't heard about before – but it's a critical piece of the future of the Columbia River and everything that depends on it. This week Soundside's Libby Denkmann caught up on the treaty's latest with Nigel Bankes, professor emeritus of law at the University of Calgary. Scientists at the University of Washington placed GPS collars on dozens of bobcats and coyotes and tracked their movements and behaviors in Northeast and Central Washington. The animals moved from areas uninhabited by humans into rural communities to escape being killed by wolves and cougars with whom they compete for food. But the strategy ultimately proved lethal, as the bobcats and coyotes were three to four times more likely to be killed by people than by those apex predators. Laura Prugh is an associate professor of wildlife ecology at the University of Washington and the lead author of this study which was published last month in the journal, “Science.” She joins us to talk about the research findings and what they say about the so-called “human shield effect” on predator-prey relationships observed in Yellowstone and other national parks.
Former Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Jon Kitna proved during his football career to be a winner and a leader. After playing three sports at Lincoln High School in Tacoma, Washington, Kitna walked on at Central Washington University (NAIA), earning the starting quarterback job as a true freshman. Kitna proved he was no fluke leading Central Washington to the NAIA Football National Championship his senior year. After earning a math education degree, Kitna was prepared to teach and coach at the high school level. But, instead, Dennis Erickson saw something in Kitna, signing him to the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent in 1996. After being waived and signed to the Seahawks practice squad, Kitna was allocated to the World League of American Football and the Barcelona Dragons. It was here that Kitna showed he had the makings to play in the NFL and would play in the league with the Seahawks, Bengals, Detroit Lions, and Dallas Cowboys. However, after finishing his pro career, Kitna started the job he thought was his future all along, becoming a high school coach, the position he holds today as the new head coach at Liberty Township (Ohio) Lakota East High School, where he'll coach his youngest son, Jamison Kitna, a Class of 2025 quarterback prospect who already holds double-digit offers from the likes of Baylor, Duke, West Virginia, Pittsburgh and more. Kitna joined In The Trenches with Dave Lapham, presented by First Star Logistics, to discuss his career, including what may surprise many as his most significant achievement in the game, and respect he has for former teammate Carson Palmer and what he's seen so far from current Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow.
