Canisius College Head Coach, Trevor Large dropped by the prohockeypod this week. Like most Canadian's, he was attracted to hockey at a young age. One interesting thing about his story is that he quit hockey during his OHL draft year out of nowhere. A year later, Trevor missed the game and decided to make a comeback, earning a spot with a Tier 2 Junior A team in Brampton. This decision led him to Ferris State University and earning a degree. He joined the real world for two years as a computer programmer, but then soon realized he missed being in the game of hockey. He and his fiancé at the time, took a chance on an unpaid graduate assistant position at AIC. This decision and him paying his dues for two years led him to an assistant coaching job at Army West Point for 6 seasons, before transferring to Canisius College as an Assistant Coach and now in his 8th season as Head Coach. We talked about what he has learned over the years and how he has helped Canisius win an Atlantic Hockey Championship in 2023. His teams are built on culture and 3 important things he looks for in recruiting players: positive, competitive, and team first. Very simple but effective. We also both talked about the “want” and “pride” to play for your college and wear their badge. Something I think is sometimes lost on our athletes today. In the example of Canisius, once a Griff, always a Griff. That means something to the players Trevor recruits. It was really good to talk to Trevor Large and I hope you enjoy!
We go Army heavy in this week's Pod as No. 6 Notre Dame (9-1) hosts No. 17 Army (9-0) at Yankee Stadium as part of the Shamrock Series game. We talk with Ken Kraetzer of the West Point Football Report on what makes the Black Knights so dangerous this season - it's more than just quarterback Bryson Daily, who's really good. We also talk former Granger, Indiana resident Richard Cacioppe, author of the book “Black Knights and Fighting Irish: A Rivalry, a Game, and America One Year After the End of World War II” about what this rivalry once was so many years ago. We briefly review the Virginia game (particularly the fake punt call), muster up a Pod of Old that included a memorable escape against Army in the Meadowlands in 1995 (the Ivory Covington game), and close with one hot take and one prediction for this weekend's game.
On this week's edition of "Football Never Sleeps" on YouTube, Eric Hansen and Tyler James discussed the challenge awaiting Notre Dame on Saturday from Army West Point, ND's latest College Football Playoff outlook following a win over Virginia, takeaways from head coach Marcus Freeman's Monday press conference and the latest in recruiting. At the end of this season, Riley, who has been the Head Coach at Army since 2004, and prior to that an Assistant Coach for the program for an additional 12 seasons, is retiring. Combined with his father, who coached at Army for 36 seasons, and brother Rob, who coached 19 seasons, the Riley family has spent for over 75 consecutive seasons in charge of the Black Knights program. To say that the Riley family is a part of the DNA of the United States Military Academy would be an understatement. Listen as he shares what makes West Point the preeminent leadership insitution in the world, carrying the responsibility of honoring every player's legacy, and why creating the power of of one is the key to overcoming any obstacle.

Don’t forget to nominate a deserving strength and conditioning coach for an NSCA Coach of the Year Award at NSCA Awards.Show Notes“I also help out with the Athlete Monitoring Program. Everyone is probably familiar with—to get in the military, you have to have meet certain height and weight requirements, or physical abilities that might lean more towards distance running, push-ups, sit ups, whatever it may be. But when you have a 300-lb lineman, or a heavyweight wrestler, or a rugby player, or a thrower, that type of training might not—that body size isn’t conducive to their athletic career for them to stay safe and be successful. So, I work close with getting those athletes ready to commission once their sports seasons end.” 4:48 “When I got to middle school, my parents sat me down and they’re like, okay, maybe softball, or track, or some of your other sports might—and I was like, “no, I’m playing football. I like this the best. I like hitting people.” So, then my dad was, to really appease my mom, like, “don’t worry, I’m going to make her quit.” And so, then he made me get up every morning at 5:00 AM and do his whatever he knew about two hours of working out before school in middle school and I fell in love with it to where he didn’t make me quit. So, I played through junior year.” 11:30 “To me, it’s just all flowing and I can’t compartmentalize it. I’ve been at West Point a while, so I really do feel like I have a family here, to where I can bring my son around. There’s definitely been last minute schedule changes. I’ve thrown him in the hiking backpack and just coached a group. My players love him and he loves Army. It means so much to me for him to see me feel like I have a purpose in my career.” 15:15

Joe Alberici is currently the Head Men's Lacrosse Coach at Army – West Point. We could just have a conversation on lacrosse and that would be fascinating and how he leads, but being at Army and experiencing West Point, he's going to bring a lot of the leadership principles that exist on that campus, and it is a unique special place and he's going to take us behind the curtain as far as what makes Army – West Point so special. He's going to talk specifically around captainship and leadership in this conversation. If Joe sounds familiar to you, he gave a speech that went viral recently about this notion of being a tough guy at life and how important it is to be inclusive and rethink about how we often think about toughness. And when I think about our military and I think about cadets that might go through West Point, we certainly think of them as physically tough, but Joe's going to talk about in this conversation how much he values mental toughness and emotional toughness. I think you're going to find Joe to be pretty holistically sound. We talk about culture, we talk about leadership, and how proud and how fortunate he feels to have the opportunity to coach at Army. And look, Army Lacrosse has become a contender. They beat the University of Maryland lacrosse team last year in the NCAA tournament; Maryland had won the National Championship the year before. So, he is coaching high level lacrosse players who also have a pride and a determination and a desire to serve our country. So, if I think about the type of people I would want my children to be coached by, I think about Coach Joe and I think about how he leverages his own faith, how he leverages his own philosophy, his upbringing, and his experience to pour into the student athletes that he surrounds himself with. So, this is a masterclass in humility, in confidence, in belief, and in having values and principles and being led by those. Joe had a number of amazing insights during our conversation. Some of them include: “I've got a couple of built-in things to keep me humble” (6:15). “I need to serve [my student athletes]. They deserve the best” (7:25). “I look at [greatness] as something to aspire towards” (9:25). “The way we honor the tradition is by building upon it” (11:30). “We embrace [tradition], but we are always looking for better ways to do it” (12:50). “There's so many important things you do at the United States Military Academy… but what I'm of firm belief of… is there's nothing more impactful than their time in our lacrosse family” (18:00). “So much is made of the challenges here at West Point. The untold story is… there's no place that supports you more than West Point” (20:45). “When they accept you at West Point, they're not telling you you're good enough to get in, they're telling you you're good enough to graduate” (22:15). “There's a vulnerability that myself and my staff, we're the first to model, and it permeates through our organization” (23:30). “We tend to gravitate towards what we love the most; often what we love the most is what we do the best” (30:35). “Our mission is to become a West Point man” (31:10). “One of our pillars is being unrelenting towards excellence [in all that we do]” (31:40). “You get to show up in this locker room with some of the greatest people you'll ever know” (40:25). “We're above moral victories in this program. That's not what we're showing up to do against anybody” (47:00). “It doesn't really matter if we're the better team than them. It only matters that we're better for those 60 minutes” (47:15). “Any time I have young people to speak to, I deliver the exact same message, and it is about being a tough guy or a tough girl” (54:00). “It's really important to give 100% 100% of the time” (56:20). “One of the ways you demonstrate toughness is by being inclusive” (58:10). “That decision to [bring others in] will make you better” (59:00). “Don't wait for the thank you, the appreciation. Just do it because it's right” (1:03:35). “If the leadership model is to bring everyone in, you've got to be humble enough to not have your stamp on it” (1:16:10). “Be the model” (1:17:15). “We want a team full of leaders. But part of being a great leader is you have to be humble” (1:17:55). Additionally, you can follow Joe on Twitter and you can follow the Army Lacrosse Team on Twitter and Instagram. Dean Wegner joined the podcast to talk about his life and his apparel company. He graduated from West Point and joined the Army. He flew choppers and achieved the rank of Captain before exciting the ranks to pursue other ventures. I was recommended to Deans apparel company "Authentically American" by Jeffery Sabins and instantly started an order. Matt and I were looking for an American made company to support and after one chat with Dean we found just that. Patriotism runs deep in the Wegner bloodline, and this episode was a blast to record.
