By Jesse SpectorContinuing the project that I referenced in yesterday's Pavilion, I was looking to see who coached Centre College from 1938-41, and thus had young assistant DeWitt Weaver on staff. Instead, I found Centre president Dr. Milton Moreland's carrot cake recipe. This project also took me last night to 1959 in South Dakota, and another Sports Illustrated piece, this one by Roy Terrell, “Normalcy In A Small World.” Fellow fans of the Sickos Committee, which of course you are……will enjoy diving into this.To the millions of football fans who focus their attention each Saturday afternoon on Syracuse and Southern Cal, on Northwestern and Texas and LSU, small-college football is a world apart. Yet there are far more small colleges in the U.S. than big colleges and hundreds of them play football every weekend in the fall. Some play very good football indeed. In this number there are big, wealthy schools, which are smalltime only in an intercollegiate athletic sense: Cal Poly, with its enrollment of 5,000; Mississippi Southern, with 3,825; and dozens of schools, such as East Texas State and Mankato Teachers of Minnesota and Hofstra on Long Island, all around 3,000. Then there are the medium-size small colleges, schools with 800 or 1,000 or 1,200 students, like Lenoir Rhyne in North Carolina, Juniata and Bloomsburg in Pennsylvania, Hope and Hillsdale in Michigan, Adams State in Colorado, Whittier in California, Willamette in Oregon. They play good football, too.And finally there are the small small colleges: Emporia of Kansas, Presbyterian of South Carolina, Sewanee of Tennessee—and Huron. Governed in most cases by the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) rather than by the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association), even their rules are different. They still have unlimited substitution, for example, to which the big schools are slowly returning. Freshmen are eligible for varsity competition. They have never adopted the two-point conversion nor have they widened their goal posts, partly because many of them can't afford to pull down and put up new goal posts every few years. But the game is the game; that isn't hopscotch Huron has been playing out there. One thing, though: it's definitely a piece that is of 1959. Huron College, which was a college before South Dakota was a state, called its teams the Scalpers. They later became the Si Tanka University Screaming Eagles before the school shut down in 2005. In 1959… …like I said, the SI piece was of 1959. But that also means that the ending comes across in a sweet and charming way that it probably wouldn't if it were written today, even if the feelings of joy that we get from sports at this level are so similar.I think that's something people look for a lot, and try to recapture, the sweetness of their youth, or the charm of the times before they were born, that they heard about from parents and grandparents. Nostalgia can be wielded in dangerous ways, as the very phrase that came to define a neofascist movement should make clear. It's also worth remembering the positive appeal, that even in things we've come to be cynical about, there's something good, and reasons that we fell in love, and often that generations before us did, too.The nickname, the mascot cartoon, the “pretty coeds” caption… all stuff that wouldn't make most readers have a second thought in that era. Three years later, Terrell was still at SI, and had a piece in the college football issue, which…This is also of the time, right? But waving the Confederate flag is so much louder, something that never was about honoring heritage and tradition unless you're talking about a heritage and tradition of racism — it's a good thing that it's become more common knowledge that Dixie fetishization and its incorporation into “traditions” was directly connected to Jim Crow and responding to the civil rights movement. Just because Huron College was a tiny school, without any of the clout of Ole Miss or the SEC, we can't just give it a pass. There are different levels of contempt available to us, and that's important when we try to contextualize things. The Huron coed and the Ole Miss cheerleaders both have some old-timey racism going on, but there should be a discernible difference between a school drum and the flag of violent racist traitors.Speaking of violent racists, that Roy Terrell story on Woody Hayes included a gem of an anecdote:Two years ago, as a spectator at a game in Cleveland between the Indians and Yankees, Hayes suffered through the one-handed artistry of Vic Power at first base until he could stand it no more. "You're showing off," Hayes yelled from his box near the Indian dugout. "Why don't you use both hands and help your team win?" Power, whose ears are as good as his hands, dropped over and invited Mr. Hayes to discuss the matter further after the game; Hayes, probably figuring that much of the 230 pounds he carries these days is relatively useless in hand-to-hand combat, went home instead. He didn't go back to watch the Indians again until they traded Power to Minnesota. "That guy makes me sick," he says. "What's he got two hands for?"Two paragraphs earlier, Hayes had slugged a reporter, which he denied but an assistant cheekily didn't. But the big toughie suddenly zipped his lip and ran away from Cleveland Stadium until Power — not really a huge dude — wasn't there anymore because he was scared. In case there was any doubt of Hayes being exactly the kind of jackass in 1960 that he'd be for another two decades with unchecked power at Ohio State, that year Power won the third of his then-record seven Gold Gloves. He now trails only George Scott, Don Mattingly, and Keith Hernandez.Hayes, meanwhile, has been surpassed as the Buckeyes' biggest human paraquat of a head coach by Jim Tressel and Urban Meyer. Of course, Hayes had to walk so that they could run.The man who can make Woody Hayes sickest of all is the archenemy, Jack Fullen, alumni secretary at Ohio State. Fullen once proposed that the school give up all pretense at amateurism, hire a professional team and control it under a bureau of football.Fullen, who never wanted Hayes at OSU in the first place, did wind up managing to keep the Buckeyes out of the 1962 Rose Bowl... but obviously Hayes stayed right up until 1977, when he punched a cameraman during the Ohio State-Michigan game.Haha, just kidding, Hayes kept his job a whole ‘nother year after that, until he punched Clemson's Charlie Bauman during the Gator Bowl. They should've listened to Jack Fullen. If only he'd had a carrot cake recipe. This is a public episode. If you'd like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit willetspen.substack.com/subscribe

God seeks to be in right relationship with humanity and works through the experience of faith to be so. It relates to legal terminology in which the individual is considered to be righteous before the law rather than guilty of a crime or trespass.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justification_(theology)Indulgences were an act one could perform, or an item one could purchase, in the 16th century Christian church in the hopes of assuaging a person's time spent in purgatory, a sort of afterlife space that was believed to purify souls prior to resurrection. At one point, the purchase of indulgences formed a large portion of the church's economic base, and they were a point of contention between papal loyalists and protestant reformers who split with the church; though, it should be noted the reform movements that stayed in the church also took issue with the practice.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indulgence

Nick Quaglia, Marv Ezhan, and Mike Molyneaux get into the hot topics of the Patriots draft form last week. Was it a HUGE hit? Or a massive bust?  When Tom Brady made his decision to go south and join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, everyone in New England began asking who's the replacement. Once free agency died down and Bill Belichick still hadn't picked up a quarterback the focus shifted to the draft. Then, he went the entire weekend without selecting a quarterback. It's apparent that the head coach has a level of trust built with the second-year Patriot, Jarrett Stidham. For now, he will own the starting role. But in retrospect, was it a mistake to pass up on guys like Jake Fromm who fell quite a ways? And Bill Belichick pulled off perhaps the most Bill Belichick move of the decade. He took the Patriots first-round draft pick, traded it away, and then proceeded to select Kyle Dugger, a Division II safety from Lenoir–Rhyne with his only second-round pick. While draft analysts are split on the decision, Patriots fans are in an uproar. In terms of the rest of the weekend, New England filled two key positions: tight end and linebacker.

Hey everybody, I'm Brian Clapp, VP of Content and Engaged Learning for WorkInSports.com and this is the Work In Sports podcast…I've been spending a lot of time lately considering the plights of different types of people during this global pandemic. Obviously this is tragic, people are losing their jobs, and many are losing their lives. I thank, from the bottom of my heart, all of those people on the front lines of this pandemic, from the healthcare workers to the grocery clerks, who risk their own health to help others -- admirable traits, and I wish you nothing but health. But I've also been thinking about those of us locked down and isolated at our homes. I live in an area with some land, we have about 4 acres, I have my kids home with me, my wife -- I'm surrounded by my people. We have computers, TV, internet, food, phones, a ping pong table, stable jobs (for now) a huge garden. We have nothing to complain about. Others aren't so lucky. This for them is far more challenging. They live in small apartments, they don't have access to the internet, they are all alone. This to them can be torture. Empathy, putting yourself in someone else's shoes and understanding their plight, is really important right now. I got my first job in Atlanta at 21, had never been there before, didn't know anyone, and had a crappy apartment. Like, really crappy. I couldn't imagine being locked in place at that time. I would have gone nuts.Even later in my 20's moved in with my future wife, just the two of us in another crappy apartment in Seattle -- Fremont to be specific. All these super cool things just outside our door within walking distance, but instead we could have been trapped inside. I'm not sure we'd be married now if that happened. I look at my situation now and say, not so bad. But I can also realize that so many of you are in a situation that makes this hard and uncomfortable and your motivating thoughts of “I'm going to learn new things and catch up on good books” may have drifted off by week 6 of this situation.I've also been thinking about personality differences and how they can influence how someone is handling this situation. An extrovert is likely really having a hard time right now, trying to have game night on zoom, or facetime with friends… the quiet moments are likely crushing their spirit. Introverts, on the other hand, largely get their energy from inside themselves and selected interactions with people are likely handling this with grace. Some people may not have even realized who they were until these moments. You might not have realized just how much of an extrovert you were until it was taken away! If you are feeling right now this deep desire to be around other people...maybe you are more extroverted -- for you this is hell. But if you are Ok with this scenario, and surprised at how well you are handling this unexpected change, maybe you are more introverted than you realized prior. This is good, this is a positive for everyone because the more you understand yourself and how you tick, the more you can set yourself up for success. Today's guest is a self-identified extrovert, she loves large passionate, screaming groups of sports fans… and that love serves her well in her role as Director of Marketing for Lenoir Rhyne Athletics. Just a few years removed from her undergrad, Leah Clayton has carved out quite a path for herself and she's here to tell us all about it… and get some of that extrovert energy out! Here's Leah Clayton!Questions for Lenoir-Rhyne Director of Marketing Leah Clayton1: Before we get into sports marketing in athletics, and your life and role at Lenoir-Rhyne – let's go back to your beginning a bit -- why college sports and why marketing? How did you discover this career fit for yourself?2: You earned your undergrad degree at Appalachian State in communication and PR and were a 4-year member of the cheerleading squad -- what is the biggest misconception people have about being a cheerleader?

Many, many, many of you have asked me to interview people in smaller athletic departments, or to get people earlier in their career -- well, Leah is both, she's just a few ears into her sports career, and she's really making a mark at Lenoir-Rhyne.She is also wildly charismatic, and I had a really really good time interviewing her. Smart and funny….plus she called me out for mispronouncing her alma mater, which I loved. I absolutely love it when someone is confident enough to call me out.OK, so what do we want to talk about today? This question from Ben in Washington stood out to me…“Hey Brian, love the podcast, I'm a pretty new listener but I've gone back and listened to 5 of your previous episodes and really enjoyed the content.  My favorite so far was Celia Bouza from ESPN Next - you and her had a really strong rapport, and I loved that chemistry.I'm a college senior, so my world has been turned a bit upside down. For the last decade we've had pretty low unemployment numbers, people were getting jobs. Now, unemployment is going to go through the roof. You've lived through this more than most of us… what is it really like when unemployment is high?”Ben -- welcome to the community, and thanks for listening. Celia is one of my favorites too -- glad you enjoyed that one and YES, I am old enough to remember when unemployment was high. I'm old enough to remember how scary it was with the financial crash of 2007-2008. And I'm old enough to remember 9/11 and the fears that came after that. I was working at CNN during 9/11 and that was a scary, scary time. But rather than focus on what it was like to live through those moments, let's focus on the job market during high unemployment. 1: Employers get really, really frustrated. They have roles to fill, but because unemployment is high, they get more and more unqualified people applying for their jobs, hoping that they'll get lucky.2: Finding the right match gets harderEmployers deal with lots of noise… and they look for ways to cut through it. Which means they rely on two things...sites like ours, and applicant tracking systems. At WorkinSports.com we have tools for employers to filter through our database of resumes, find matches for their openings, invite them to apply, and more. This allows the employer to actively find the right matches for their jobs, rather than relying on blind submissions. It is a huge benefit to you to post your resume on our site. Also, they rely on applicant tracking systems to manage their hiring process. They always use these anyway, but in these times they really rely on them to cut through the noise.3: Which means you HAVE TO make your resume fantastic.

1. CeeDee Lamb is usually mentioned in the same breath as Jerry Jeudy as a serious candidate to be the first WR taken off the board. However, the expectation is that Lamb will run in the 4.5s in the 40 yard dash. While I constantly, passionately stress that 40 time isn’t the end all, be all for WR’s, the NFL has a history of letting uber-talented receivers who post such a result slide much farther than they should. A notable recent example of that is Michael Thomas, who is now arguably the best WR in the NFL. Based on the tape alone, do you think Lamb is worthy of a top-10 selection? 2. The WR that’s likely to generate the most buzz in Indy is Henry Ruggs. Many believe he will break the record for fastest 40 time ever recorded at the Combine, which was recently set by John Ross three years ago. Ross ended up being the ninth overall pick in the 2017 draft. Do you think Ruggs is a better prospect? If so, what makes him so and do you think his film alone should put him in the conversation along with Lamb and Jeudy to be the first WR off the board? 3. Another speedy receiver with a chance to skyrocket up boards with a good showing in Indy is TCU’s Jaelen Reagor. Many on Draft Twitter are enamored with his skillset, but several other respected analysts are not as high on him. What were your major takeaways from Reagor’s tape and do you think he can be a top-25 or top-15 pick if he does well for the remainder of the draft process? 4. This is one of the better OT classes we have seen in quite some time. There could very well be five OT’s selected in the first round, if not more. But there are some interesting questions surrounding two of the top five prospects; Iowa’s Tristan Wirfs and Georgia’s Andrew Thomas. Reportedly, many around the league believe both of them are better fits inside at guard (Wirfs due to length and Thomas due to play-style). Do you share those views? 5. Another position group with some incredible depth in this 2020 draft class is corner. The headliner of the class is obviously Jeffrey Okudah, who is a borderline lock to go top-five. But after him, it’s a bit of a mystery. Which corners do you think have the most convincing case to be the second CB taken off the board? 6. We were down in Mobile for the Senior Bowl last month, and arguably the biggest star down there was South Carolina DT Javon Kinlaw. I heard from a credible source down there that scouts around the league have near-identical grades on him and Auburn DT Derrick Brown, another blue chip prospect. If he tests as well as expected in Indy, do you think he deserves to be drafted before Brown? 7. Another star player we saw down in Mobile was safety Kyle Dugger from Lenoir Rhyne. Last week, Matt Miller, the lead NFL Draft analyst from Bleacher Report reported that some scouts think Dugger is a better prospect than LSU’s Grant Delpit. What are your thoughts on Dugger and how high do you think he can be drafted? 8. Name some under-the-radar prospects who you believe have the potential to dramatically increase their stock at the combine
