Episode 56 of The Mat Stats Show wraps up the three-part deep dive into the three-point takedown rule with Glenn Gormley, Kevin Hazard and Jason Bryant taking the research down to the round-by-round and weight-by-weight level. Using six NCAA Division I Championships worth of data before and after the rule change, the crew looks at how scoring changes as the tournament progresses, why early rounds heavily influence the numbers, and what the data says about parity across the bracket. One consistent trend: as the rounds advance, scoring, margin of victory, majors, techs and pins all decrease as the competition tightens. Episode 56 Slideshow: https://www.mattalkonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/sildeshow56.pdf The show also dives into how different weight classes compare statistically. Some long-held wrestling stereotypes take a hit, including the old “heavyweight is always 1-0 or a pin” mentality. The numbers actually show a moderate positive correlation between weight and margin of victory, along with more majors and tech falls in the upper weights than many fans might expect. The group also gets into statistical anomalies, including why 125 pounds was the only weight class to see a scoring decrease after the three-point takedown rule went into effect and whether individual wrestlers can skew the numbers over time. Outside the takedown discussion, the episode touches on the continued growth of college wrestling programs, recognition for longtime wrestling contributors Steve Cole and Nate Naasz, and a broader conversation about the NCAA's proposed eligibility model changes and how sport-specific structures — especially in wrestling and hockey — could be affected. Episode 56 closes the book on the three-point takedown series, but leaves plenty of future rabbit holes open as more years of data continue to build on the trends Mat Stats has uncovered.About Mat Stats Welcome to the NWCA's latest venture to help our favorite sport. In Episode 55 of The MatStats Show, hosts Glenn Gormley, Jason Bryant, and Kevin Hazard continue their "Moneyball" deep dive into the impact of the 3-point takedown rule. Analyzing over 3,300 matches from the 2021–2026 NCAA Championships, the team investigates whether the recent rise in total points is a result of increased action or merely "scoring inflation". The data reveals a staggering 228% increase in technical falls, prompting Gormley to suggest that bonus-point thresholds have been "cheapened".The hosts propose modernizing the sport by raising the Major Decision margin to 10 points and Technical Falls to 18 or 20 points. This adjustment aims to restore the historical value of dominance in an era where takedowns now account for 59% of all scoring. The episode also features a "College Business Update," highlighting the financial pressures of Revenue Sharing and massive NIL budgets. With top basketball NIL budgets now estimated at $20 million per year, the crew discusses how these external shifts may eventually force Men's Basketball to seek a larger share of NCAA revenues. Episode 54 of The Mat Stats Show gets back into the speakeasy with Jason Bryant shaking off 25 days, seven countries, two continental championships, 66 medal ceremonies and whatever number of anthems came through Kyrgyzstan and the Balkans. Jason, Kevin Hazard and Glenn Gormley start with a quick look at April in wrestling, including the U.S. Open, high schoolers making noise at the senior level and the fact that wrestling no longer just disappears after the NCAA Division I Championships. The main topic kicks off a three-part Mat Stats series on the three-point takedown rule. Glenn breaks down six years of NCAA Division I Championship data — 2021-23 under the two-point takedown and 2024-26 under the three-point takedown — with 3,659 matches analyzed. The first takeaway: takedowns per minute are down 7.18 percent since the rule change. Scoring moves overall are also down, while stalling and penalties were the only scoring category to increase. That doesn't automatically mean the rule change is good or bad, but it does give the crew plenty to dig into. Takedowns now account for nearly 59 percent of all points scored, and takedowns plus escapes make up almost 83 percent of the scoring at the NCAA Championships. Episode 54 lays out the first batch of numbers before the next two shows get into margin of victory, majors, tech falls and what the three-point takedown may actually be doing to college wrestling. Episode 53 of The Mat Stats Show recaps the conclusion of the 2026 collegiate wrestling season across all major divisions, with hosts Jason Bryant, Glenn Gormley, and Kevin Hazard breaking down the numbers behind the NCAA, NAIA, and NCWA championships. The discussion opens with reflections on the NCAA Division I Championships in Cleveland, including Penn State's record-setting performance and Oklahoma State becoming the first program to crown three freshman champions in the same tournament. The hosts also highlight the postseason landscape across divisions, emphasizing the continued dominance of programs such as Wartburg in Division III and Grand View in the NAIA. The show's statistical focus examines participation, championships, and competitive balance across the sport. Across the six NCAA and NAIA championships alone, 339 teams representing 46 states, Washington, D.C., and British Columbia qualified wrestlers, producing 41 teams with national champions and 186 programs with All-Americans. Combined participation across NCAA, NAIA, and NCWA levels now exceeds 750 collegiate teams, reinforcing the hosts' central argument that wrestling has become a truly national sport extending far beyond the traditional Division I spotlight. Additional analysis explores which programs and states produced the most success during the 2026 championship season. Iowa led all states in national champions and All-Americans across the NCAA and NAIA tournaments, while NAIA powerhouse Grand View scored the most combined team points across the six championships. The episode concludes by reinforcing the show's theme of “Root Locally, Support Nationally,” encouraging fans to recognize the full collegiate wrestling ecosystem—including Division II, Division III, NAIA, and emerging women's programs—as essential to the continued growth of the sport. An all-new episode of the Penn State Wrestling Show from Blue-White Illustrated is now live! The Nittany Lions sit one month away from starting their 2024-2025 regular season with Drexel on Nov. 17 at Rec Hall. Of course, there is plenty for host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Greg Pickel to cover in the leadup to that. This week's episode starts with a look at the NWCA All-Star Classic. Defending 285-pound NCAA champion Greg Kerkvliet, the No. 1 ranked wrestler at heavyweight, was set to face No. 3 Nick Feldman of Ohio State on Nov. 16 at Rec Hall. However, Iowa State announced Wednesday that its own heavyweight, No. 6 Yonger Bastida, would be facing Feldman instead. Flo Wrestling, which runs the event, quietly updated its bout sheet to reflect that the Cyclone is replacing Kerkvliet but has otherwise said nothing about the sudden change.Last year, Clay Clarson of South Dakota State was scratched from the exhibition event, sat out the first six weeks of the season due to injury, and was never right during the 2023-2024 season. Conversely, Levi Haines and Jacori Teemer also both scratched off of last year's original Classic bout sheet. But, they both wrestled all year, and Haines beat Teemer, then of Iowa and now of Arizona State, in the NCAA finals. But, they withdrew after the Journeymen Classic, not before. With all of that said, PSU posted a photo of Kerkvliet wrestling hours before this news broke. And, he has been frequently featured on the team's social media account. With no concrete news to share on Kerkvliet's status moving forward, Pickel and Carr discuss what it all might mean moving forward.

The defending NCAA champs now sit roughly a month away from kicking off the 2024-2025 season. In the first episode of October, host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Greg Pickel share the latest on the Nittany Lions as they wait to take the mat.The conversation starts with recruiting. Penn State hosted Class of 2025 star Marcus Blaze last weekend, which included a stop at Beaver Stadium to see the football team take on Illinois in primetime. The Perrysburg, Ohio native has not said much publically about his recruitment. We know that his top group consists of Michigan, Cornell, Ohio State, Purdue, and Iowa. A decision from the nation's No. 1 138-pound wrestler and No. 2 pound-for-pound grappler per MatScouts could come at any moment. Pickel and Carr discuss that and also Class of 2026 standout Bo Bassett. He put out his list of official visits this week. One of his stops will be in State College. Here's his current schedule:More: Bo Bassett sets recruiting timeline, official visitsPickel and Carr discuss Bassett's recruitment and when a decisions could be made before moving on to the latest on the Lions' lineup. Six members of head coach Cael Sanderson's team will compete in next month's NWCA All-Star Classic? What do the matchups tell us about how Sanderson could fill out his lineup this winter? It's becoming clear that four-time NCAA champ Carter Starocci will move up to 184 pounds to try and become the first five-time champ in collegiate wrestling history. Last year's 157-pound NCAA champ, Levi Haines, is moving up to 174. Sophomore Tyler Kasak, who finished third at 149 pounds year ago, looks set to replace Haines at 157. All three will compete in the NWCA event along with Greg Kerkvliet (heavyweight), Shayne Van Ness (149 pounds), and Beau Bartlett (141). Twas a backyard brawl on Thursday night. I took in some high school wrestling as I watched Mounds View High School dispatch with Irondale … which are the two high schools in my school district. One is known as the sports school, the other is the band and robotics school. The sports school won 60-6. By the way, former Gopher Marty Morgan's youngest son is a 215-pounder for Mounds View and he's freaking HUGE. He's headed to South Dakota State. I was spotted in the crowd by one Mounds View parent. Was great to just watch some pretty good high school wrestling without actually working. There's some great HS wrestling kicking off today at the Walsh Ironman. Check my socials @jasonmbryant for some knowledge bombs. It's Short Time Shots, a look at the day's college wrestling scores and more, I'm your host, Hall of Fame wrestling writer and broadcaster Jason Bryant. On to the scores on the college scene from Thursday. Speaking of scoreboards, did you know you can find all the D1 dual meet scores and links to their results at collegewrestlingscoreboard.com AND I've added another redirect to help you follow all the tournaments from every division at collegewrestlingtournaments.com. Only D1 dual of the night, Michigan State improved to 4-0 after a 25-9 win over Buffalo ON THE STAGE up in New York. Buffalo did one of those theatre-style duals for the third year in a row. If you look at the dual, this one was probably closer than the score indicates as Michigan State picked up three victories that were two points or less. Still been a rough start for Buffalo this year. In Division II, Augustana (S.D.) knocked off 13th-ranked Northern State 21-13 out in the middle of South Dakota. The Vikings were ranked 18th in the most recent NWCA rankings, which is a tournament points ranking rather than a dual ranking. Augie's top-ranked Jaxson Rohman earned a major at 125 pounds, while top-ranked Wyatt Turnquist won 7-2 at 149 pounds for Northern State. Out west, San Francisco State shutout Simpson (Calif.) 41-0. In D3, second-ranked Wartburg rolled past the only non-Iowa team in the American Rivers Conference, which used to be the Iowa Conference. The Knights had five falls, the fastest coming at 197 pounds by top-ranked Mo Endene, the returning D3 champion at the weight in the 54-0 win. Third-ranked UW-Eau Claire rallied from down 14-3 after five weights and reeled off five straight W's to oust rival UW-Whitewater 25-14. Whitewater did pick up the dual's most notable win as ninth-ranked Dominick Mallinder bounced top-ranked Tyler Fleetwood 7-1 at 133 pounds. 20th-ranked Millikin topped Aurora 23-17. Bonus points were the difference for the Big Blue as three of the wins were bonus victories including falls by Coby Haney at 133 and Nathan Callaway at 157. Also in the CCIW, Elmhurst edged Concordia Wisconsin 24-23. Roanoke beat Shenandoah 43-4 out in my home state of Virginia. Three bonus victories were the difference for Loras as they topped Cornell College 21-19 in a matchup of Iowa schools. In the NAIA, Montana State-Northern rallied to beat Dickinson State 32-16, while No. 11 Providence (Mont.) beat Eastern Oregon 28-15. Top-ranked Hunter Sparks of Eastern Oregon got a fall in that one at 125 pounds. The Evergreen State College earned its first win, topping Grays Harbor College 50-3. Evergreen's mascot? The GEODUCKS. What is a Geoduck? Well, it's the largest burrowing clam in the world, native to the coastal waters of the Pacific. Makes sense, Evergreen is in Washington. Grays Harbor is too, just a mile or two from the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah. Some of you will get the reference. On the women's side, fourth ranked Colorado Mesa torched Texas Woman's University 44-5, and Adams State 45-4. UW-Stevens Point topped Wartburg 30-13 in the first home dual in school history for the new women's program at Wartburg. Minot State was a winner over Dakota Wesleyan 27-16. Evergreen's women also picked up a W, beating Grays Harbor 34-8. Shout outs to our latest Mat Talk patrons, Warrior Coach and KBnoswag. Subscribe, for free, to my Daily Wrestling News.
