How and why the election of Donald Trump inspired more women to enter politics. Donald Trump's victory over Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election shocked and dismayed many women, and motivated many to run for office at all levels of government. In The Pink Wave: Women Running for Office After Trump (NYU Press, 2023), Regina M. Matheson and William W. Parsons explore this inspiring phenomenon and its impact on women's representation. Drawing on national surveys and in-depth interviews of over 900 women, across almost every state, Matheson and Parsons show us why more women decided to run for state legislature during the Trump administration, the obstacles they faced on the campaign trail, and whether they ultimately succeeded or failed in their bid for office. Candidates share valuable lessons they learned from their recent campaign experiences, providing future insight for women--on both sides of the aisle--who may be inspired to follow in their footsteps. Matheson and Parsons examine the impact Donald Trump had on women candidates--both positive and negative--and women's ambitions to pursue political office. The Pink Wave celebrates the hundreds of trailblazing women creating new political opportunities for representation, now and in the future. Learn more about your ad choices. The “pink wave” is a term that refers to a political tide that leans towards left-wing governments, specifically in Latin America throughout the 21st century. It's time for Latin Americans to recognize that the true threat to their futures comes not from the conservative right and free-market economics, but from the would-be socialists who have consigned their countries to under-development and suffering. The recent election of Javier Milei in Argentina is one of the first steps in this understanding, and hopefully, it won't be the last. A lot of things you find on the internet are new and exciting, and some things make you wonder how it took people so long to figure out. Take a woman on Tiktok for example, she thinks she's discovered the greatest fountain drink combination EVER, but for those of us who know what it is and love it... the shock and awe of her reaction to the drink is kind of surprising. Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's victory over Jair Bolsonaro in the Brazilian presidential election is the latest evidence of the resurgence of the Latin American left. This is a one of the most hopeful stories in the world, since the left and center-left parties that now govern most of Latin America have the potential to seriously address issues like climate change and inequality. But it's a complex story too, since the populist right is also gaining force. Bolsonaro's supporters did well in elections below the presidential level. The right is also organizing effective opposition in many other countries in the region, forcing the left to govern in coalitions with centrists. To survey the prospects for the left in the region, I sat down with journalist Doug Bell to interview Jeremy Adelman, the Henry Charles Lea Professor of History at Princeton University. He is also the director of the Global History Lab at Princeton. Both have spoken to me in a previous podcast. During the podcast, we talked about a UN address on the war on drugs and climate with Colombian President Gustavo Petro. Doug Bell can be found here. Pete Buttigieg slams Ron DeSantis for his cruelty. Karl Rove calls out his extreme Republicans. Former GOP Chair says the polls are wrong. A pink wave is coming. Fmr. GOP Chair Michael Steele: Polls are wrong. There will be a pink wave. Dems to hold House: Former GOP Chairman Michael Steele believes that the polls are wrong as they ignore the incoming pink wave. There is a path for Democrats to hold the House. Even GOP operative Karl Rove thinks Texas Republicans are extremists and will pay the price: When you have lost Republican operative Karl Rove, it is clear that you are screwed. Rove said Texas Republicans are extreme, and it will hurt them. BOOOOM! Pete Buttigieg decimated Ron DeSantis at a Texas conference as no one else could: Pete Buttigieg is Biden's best spokesperson. Here, he destroys Ron DeSantis for his cruel act on asylum seekers without even raising his voice. We Have Seen This Movie Before: The Fascists Have Arrived: The failure of the neoliberal order—which continues to ignore the needs and aspirations of the people—gives fuel to an ascendant far right that feeds on the despair and humiliation of the working class. Energy and food bills are soaring. Under the onslaught of inflation and prolonged wage stagnation, wages are in free fall. Billions of dollars are diverted by Western nations at a time of economic crisis and staggering income inequality to fund a proxy war in Ukraine. The liberal class, terrified by the rise of neo-fascism and demagogues such as Donald Trump, have thrown in their lot with discredited and reviled establishment politicians who slavishly do the bidding of the war industry, oligarchs, and corporations. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/politicsdoneright/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/politicsdoneright/support
