In the work Dalina and Melissa do, we uncover a lot of *stuff* about mindset - and often hear the refrain "I realized my relationship to food is kind of like my relationship to money". Have you ever noticed this too? It's like sometimes mindless, other times too restrictive, other times too "spendy” (aka a money binge)? That's why we asked Bola Sokunbi – Certified Financial Education Instructor, money expert, best-selling author, and CEO/founder of Clever Girl Finance – to talk a bit more about money mindset with us on this episode! We answer how to measure financial health, how your parents' relationship to money impacts you today, common money mindset roadblocks (and ways to overcome it!) and more about financial health, so you can explore this important part of your overall health. On this episode of Millennial Debt Domination, Katie discusses the history of women in finance. March is Women's History Month, which is a celebration of women's contributions to history, culture, and society. This month is dedicated to reflect on the often-over looked contributions of women to United States History. The history in finance doesn't back date as far as you may think. Women were only granted the ability to have their own credit in 1974, which was less than 50 years ago. Today, Katie is joined by the founder of Clever Girl Finance, Bola Sokunbi. Bola is a Certified Financial Education Instructor, money expert, and best-selling author. She created Clever Girl Finance to help women change their money stories and achieve financial success. Katie and Bola discuss when women started working outside of the home, the gender gap, couples combining finances, and much more. Start investing today and put your money to work. When I first started investing and making my money work for me… I was super intimidated! In fact, the immediate thought that comes to mind when I think “investor” is a middle-aged man, in a dark suit, briskly walking down a city street with a Starbucks coffee in hand. Maybe he's wearing a fitted t-shirt instead of a button-down -- if he's got a little swag. I am, quite literally, describing Bobby Axelrod from Billions. I love Bobby's character, but… I think you would agree, that's definitely NOT ME. ;-) Google doesn't think it's me, either. In fact, if you do a Google image search of “investor,” guess what turns up? Ninety-nine percent of the images that populate are of the guy I just described above (ahem, Bobby) -- and no women. It's no wonder I feel slightly uncomfortable thinking about investing -- because women, especially millennials and older, have been so conditioned to think that you have to be a man (and have a ton of money) to invest. But here's the thing… That impression is totally wrong. The game has changed, and women are investing money like never before (and Google, if you're reading this, please push some female investor images to your first page, okay?) Investing money doesn't have to mean putting millions of dollars into a hedge fund -- it simply means making your money work for you over time. The key here is, though, that you have to actually GET STARTED investing in order to be successful in it, and that my friend, is often the biggest hurdle. That's why I'm so excited for you to hear the interview I had with Bola Sokunbi, who is the go-to expert for investing, whether you're an experienced investor or just starting out -- and definitely if you're a female investor. She's a Certified Financial Education Instructor, best-selling author, speaker, writer, podcaster, social media influencer, and a mama to twins -- which makes her THAT much more impressive. In our interview, we discuss: How to get started investing, even if you NEVER thought you'd be able to Some of the barriers to investing that women face, and how we're overcoming them Tips on investing your money smarter so you can retire before the age of 65 The good, the bad, and the ugly about cryptocurrency, and if it's right for you Think of it like Investing 101, with a little extra kick. ;-) Rate, Review, & Follow on Apple Podcasts "I love Amy and Online Marketing Made Easy."

WhoLives (0:00:00) How many things do you do in a day that require clean water? If you cook, clean, shower, or drink, chances are you're using clean water. What's heartbreaking is that 2.1 billion people –over a quarter of the world's population –doesn't have access to clean water. Every time they do a simple task that requires clean water, they put themselves at risk for disease and other harmful side effects. So how can we help others have greater access to clean water? Joining us this morning is Nicci Renouard, the public relations ambassador for WhoLives, a nonprofit dedicated to finding sustainable solutions to deliver clean water to those in need. We'll discuss this clean water dilemma and how they've worked to solve it. Is Cash Still King? (0:18:42) Remember the days when you had to dig through your purse or wallets to find change? And then you dropped coins all over the floor as you tried to count your money in your hand? Thankfully, the transfer of money in today's world is designed to make our lives easier and more efficient. There are credit cards with easily scannable chips. Or, for iPhone users, you can tap into apple pay so you don't have carry around a wallet. But, some people say that paying with cash, despite its flaws, is better and more secure. So, what is the value of using cash when a little plastic card is so much more convenient? Here to talk about the pros and cons of using cash versus card and the best financial strategies to employ long-term is financial coach Matthew Siwiec. Independent Play (0:36:54) Anyone who's interacted with kids likely knows the following routine: set up your child with their favorite toys, linger a few minutes as they begin to play, pick up some work to do as they play, only to be interrupted seconds later when the child realizes they don't have your full, undivided attention—it can be a maddening cycle. The answer to this? Independent play! Here to discuss the importance of independent play and how we can encourage our kids to engage in it is Director of Policy Research at the Institute for Child Success, Megan Carolan. Budgeting with Uncertainty (0:52:45) We're living in a time of uncertainty, and it's hard to know how to budget when you're not sure what the future holds. But budgeting is essential to financial survival, especially in uncertain times. So, how can we build a budget that will get us through a potentially rocky or scary financial future? To help us out, we've called in Bola Sokunbi, founder of Clever Girl Finance and a Certified Financial Education Instructor, for some advice on budgeting with uncertainty on the horizon. We thought she'd be the perfect person to help us out with any stressful financial situation we might encounter. Sunrise Association (1:12:01) September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and we couldn't pass up the opportunity to talk about the young warriors who deal with much more than many of us can imagine. Those who have had cancer themselves, or are close to someone who has had it, know that the disease is not just physically taxing but mentally and emotionally as well. Today, we're honored to speak with Arnie Preminger, the founder and CEO of Sunrise Association—an organization that is dedicated to “[bringing] back the joys of childhood to children with cancer and their siblings world-wide." He joins us today to discuss how they do that. Having Money Conversations with Family (1:27:31) Depending on whether or not you are used to talking about this in the home or not, the topic of money is consistently uncomfortable. It's such a sensitive topic. But it should be something we can discuss openly with our family members. So how can we start having open, financial conversations with our spouse or our kids? To answer all of these questions and explain why we should talk about money in the home, we've invited Jen Smith, the founder of Modern Frugality, here with us today.
