Derek Rishmawy, Alastair Roberts, and Joseph Minich explore the Jesus People movement of the 1970s—from hippie communes to Calvary Chapel—and its lasting impact on American evangelicalism. They discuss the tension between Spirit-led revival and institutional church structure, examining how countercultural seekers became conservative evangelicals and what today's church can learn from this transformative era. Key Takeaway: The Jesus People movement reveals how the church's greatest evangelistic strength—meeting spiritual hunger with radical acceptance—can also become its greatest weakness without proper institutional structure and long-term discipleship. God's love is trippy. It defies logic, breaks rules, and operates outside our practical understanding of what love should be. Drawing inspiration from the Jesus People Movement of the late 1960s—when hippies turned to Christ in drastic numbers—this message explores how God's radical, pursuing love transforms our understanding of faith. Many of us operate under a fundamental misconception: that we must earn our way to God through better behavior or by cleaning ourselves up first. Others believe they've messed up too much to ever be accepted. Both perspectives create a false image of a distant, unapproachable deity waiting to judge us. But what if the fundamental truth of Christianity is that God made the first move toward us?Throughout the gospels, Jesus confronted the "bounded set" thinking of religious leaders who carefully determined who was in and who was out based on strict rules. Instead, Jesus demonstrated "centered set" thinking—like a well in a desert that people move toward from wherever they start. The religious elite couldn't handle how Jesus dismantled their gatekeeping system simply by sitting at tables with "notorious sinners" and tax collectors. The parable of the lost sheep perfectly illustrates God's pursuing love. No shepherd would logically leave ninety-nine sheep unprotected to search for one stray—that's terrible shepherding! Yet Jesus describes a God who does exactly that, finding the lost one and joyfully carrying it home on his shoulders. This isn't a God who scolds or shames upon finding us, but one who celebrates our return. Why would a perfect God pursue imperfect people? Because you are valuable to Him. Your passion is revealed in your pursuit, and God's passionate pursuit of humanity led Christ to the cross and beyond it. While we hide in our shame like Adam and Eve in the garden, God keeps calling, "Where are you?"—not to condemn, but to connect. Before trying harder or doing more, perhaps all we need is to let ourselves be found. Maybe it's time to give Jesus your simple "yes" even while acknowledging you don't have everything figured out. His trippy, far-out love is waiting, ready to carry you home.Support the showMade a decision to follow Jesus? We want to know about it! Craig Yoe's biographical interview highlights his creative journey through personal struggles and reinvention, who transforms adversity into creativity while remaining true to his innovative spirit. He discusses his graphic novel Woman & Man+, a psychedelic reflection on leaving the U.S., a painful divorce, and using art therapy to rebuild his life. Raised in the Midwest, Yoe credits his parents for encouraging his creativity, with influences like Carl Barks, Marvel Comics, Steve Ditko, and Robert Crumb. Yoe's 1960s anti-war activism, through protests and underground newspapers, reflected his pacifist values despite cultural losses like the deaths of Hendrix and Joplin. In the 1970s, he embraced the Jesus People movement, blending communal living, spiritual exploration, and work on Christian newspapers with artists like Rick Griffin. He oversaw David C. Cooke Bible and Life Pix comics before moving into toy design with Sid Diamond Toy Company and Marvin Glass toymakers. Yoe later became Creative Director for Jim Henson's Muppets and founded Yoe Studio, building a decades-long career in design and storytelling. Welcome back everyone! I turned 26 at the end of September. It was a milestone - because it marked one year, since Thomas and I, had moved to Munich from Nienburg. The beautiful house in Trudering had been secured and the other families joined us. Who would have known that one year later, we would be saying goodbye, to Gregor, and Alan's families. At least the dust had settled in our midst, by the time Jim's promised helpers arrived. They were Scott and Steve from California, part of a team of leaders who Jim called, the Mobile Ministry. Even though they had never been to Germany, or Europe, they weren't worried about the possible language or cultural barriers. They had experience traveling around in the States and visiting the new  groups. They would spend a few weeks there, to encourage the leaders and offer advice for the next steps. The method at the time, was modelling the community lifestyle, that was popular within the Jesus People Movement. ... For us Americans at the Trudering house, it was pretty special, learning to sing to Jesus, in German. I sometimes felt overwhelmed, like getting a glimpse of God's heart, for the country I now called home. When I hear the old recordings, it brings back all those wonderful memories. We witnessed people's broken lives restored, as they learned to sing with their whole heart to the Lord. Thomas and I, had the sense, that it was a “new day” for the German people!

The movement has recently come up again for notice in a film called “Jesus Revolution”, based on the true events of the founding of Calvary Chapel in California under Pastor Chuck Smith (d. 2013) and his long-haired hippie protégé Lonnie Frisbee. The film, a well done and positive presentation of the events, stars Kelsey Grammer and features the role of Greg Laurie (played by Joel Courtney) as a new convert to Christ at Smith's Calvary Chapel, and as someone who would go on to found Harvest Christian Fellowship Church, with campuses in California and Hawaii. That's what we're discussing today when Larry Eskridge, author of God's Forever Family: The Jesus People Movement in America, joins Keith on the pod. Listen as Larry breaks down the history of this movement, the key players involved, and whether or not he classifies it as a true revival. Plus, did the recent film, Jesus Revolution, fairly portray the “Jesus People”? What caused this movement to finally fade off and what were its lasting effects on music, youth culture, and politics in America? And with recent events like the Asbury Revival, can America expect another movement like this in the near future? Listen now! Ok, truth time... Did you like this episode? Thousands—multitudes—of fine Christians were ensnared in it. I remember one time I bought a gift to take to a Minister in that movement who was on their death bed. The person who took the gift said, “We will have to submit this to the Elders for approval.” Another time a Pastor friend of mine—Reverend Cecil Pumphrey—was directed of the Lord to do evangelistic outreach at a university. He asked the leaders of a local church—the church was part of the False Discipleship and Covering Movement—if they would like to work with him in the evangelistic outreach at the university. They said, “No! And if you continue we will come against you with everything we have.” You haven't heard anything yet … READ ON! ______________________________ THE FALSE SHEPHERDING COVERING CULT THE FALSE DISCIPLESHIP MOVEMENT   BEWARE:  Watch in the future for heretical movements like the following I describe.   You have probably read (or heard podcasts) in some of my past teachings about the “False Discipleship” Movement or Shepherding Movement that gained momentum in the 1970's. I call it the FALSE COVERING MOVEMENT where you were supposed to have a “covering” … a person over you. You “needed covering” and they would give it IF you did everything exactly like they instructed.”   There was a group of men called the Florida Four or “Ft. Lauderdale Five” such as: Derek Prince Robert Mumford Charles Simpson Don Basham Ern Baxter   These men were all good teachers BUT they were all deceived about Christian Leadership and wrecked many families and lives and ministries.   Many mainstream AND evangelical Christians were caught up in the Shepherding Movement. The result was a trick by Satan to kill evangelism. Here is what several victims of the Movement told Pat Robertson about the Shepherding Movement:   “The Word and the will of God for our lives today should come first to the group of pastors that get together in a certain city… God reveals to them the purpose for the city and His purpose for the disciples.” “We are not a John 3:16 ministry. We are here to establish the government of God on earth.”   The architect of “the shepherding system” with one “shepherd/pastor” over eight to twelve individuals, was primarily Charles Simpson. Their strongest critics in the Charismatic Movement were myself and men of God like Pat Robertson, my friend Demos Shakarian, and David du Plessis. The Shepherding Movement seemed to diffuse about 1986 but with some areas of continuance in much the same way afterwards.   Pat Robertson saw the danger of the False Shepherding Movement and via CBN he pronounced the “Shepherding” teaching “witchcraft” and said the only difference between the “false discipleship group” and Jonestown was “Kool-Aid.”   I was used by God to inform many churches and people of this heretical Movement in the USA and other countries. I had NOT even heard what Pat Robertson or others taught about this Movement, however, I SAW its effects with my own eyes and witnessed what it was doing in the lives of wonderful Christian people. It stigmatized them and robbed them of spiritual power through its FALSE—not real—discipleship. It seemed to be a tactic of Satan to quench true discipleship and the move of the Holy Spirit that occurred during the Jesus People Movement.   The relationships that were formed became known theologically as “covenant relationships.” Those involved had to be submitted to a “shepherd,” who in turn was submitted to another shepherd … and up the line submitted to the “Fab Five” or their representatives. If this reminds you of a pyramid scheme or Multi-level marketing scheme you're probably right!   Effectively, if unintentionally, this put the individual in the position of having TWO masters– Jesus and a personal shepherd. With time the personal shepherd gains more power, as Jesus gets less. And in time, this creates a system where those who have unquestioning obedience to man are promoted. All kinds of ungodly things came in through these doors.   Several books have been written detailing the kinds of abuse suffered as a result. The scary thing about the whole system is that it started out with the intent of promoting accountability, and eventually enslaved people. When someone says “Who is your covering?” They are asking the basic Shepherding question. Ironically, Jesus was asked this same question by the Pharisees: “By what authority do you do these things?” His ministry was NOT submitted to them, and they didn't like that so they tried to shut him down, but the work of the Holy Spirit was the validation of His ministry.  And remember, the Enemy used CHRISTIAN LEADERS to effect his purpose thru the False Discipleship … Shepherding Movement!   The Movement was so prevalent that at one point I thought: “HOW in the world will people ever see the light about this dangerous phenomenon?” I remember being invited to different “Shepherding” Movement churches in Chicago [they invited me because God was doing MIRACLES and I held large seminars in Chicago at McCormick Place] where I told the congregations point blank that “NO PERSON is your Covering … Jesus Christ is your Covering.” Many times, I had people ask me, “Who is your covering?” “Where do you submit?” I would always answer: “The Lord Jesus Christ.”   Pat Robertson said of the Shepherding Movement, “It is obvious that any movement which feeds upon itself will expire. Jesus gave to his church the task of holding forth the word of life to a world without hope. The obsessive desire to order and govern Christians will invariably cut the nerve of evangelism.” Jesus said to “feed my sheep.” Healthy, well fed sheep must reproduce. Jesus did not say “dominate sheep and prohibit them from reproducing.”   Bob Mumford sincerely repented several years later, as did Derek Prince. Both Prince and Mumford experienced years of fruitful ministry later.   My friend, the reason I am sharing this information with you is that for the last 35 years there has NOT seemed to be any such “deception” in the Body of Christ other than the anti-Charismatic sector and those who do NOT believe in the Scriptural Gifts of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:4-11) and the Five-Fold Ministries (Ephesians 4:11).   Be diligent and WATCH … MANY Jews are coming to Messiah Yeshua … and MANY people are receiving MIRACLES, breakthroughs and learning their AUTHORITY in the Kingdom, and operating in the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. The Enemy may try something in the future. Be ready to expose him and his lies!   And remember, the Enemy used CHRISTIAN LEADERS to effect his purpose thru the False Discipleship … Shepherding Movement! Baruch haba b'Shem Adonai. David Owens was a missionary kid growing up with Francis Shaeffer and L'abri as neighbors and family friends. Rebelling against God, he made his way to Australia for life in the film industry. That turned into a stint as a flight attendant. He regained faith but with the “Children of God.” However, his life on airplanes turned into a church plant. As the “Jesus People Movement” hit Australia, evangelism just “happened” even to non-evangelists like David (and me). Most of his airline converts were gays and “promiscuous women,” so he did the next natural thing—he planted a church among them. Grace mixed with truth proved powerful commodities. After marriage, he and his wife pastored in Vancouver, BC, before feeling the call to Africa. The church in Tanzania focused on “white colonials” before David's leadership. He nearly quit the leadership team over the church's lack of concern for locals. His attempted resignation triggered rethinking and repentance. Attempting to quit did no good—he became the pastor and reformer. There were fireworks, including one missionary organizing an attempt to remove him from the country. But the Holy Spirit prevailed, with the now thriving church counting primarily people of color in their membership. Outreach includes training pastors, church planters, business people, medical personnel and the very poor. The interview with David was one of the most uplifting I've experienced—actually more of a presentation than an interview; it is the product of a members-only call with enrollees in the Equippers Lab.This one is great fun!You can learn more about David at Arusha Vineyard Church or facebook.com/arushavineyard. The prophetic evangelism movement is growing…. Groups of typically young believers are pouring out into the streets, coffee shops and shopping malls; listening to the Holy Spirit as He directs them to speak with people. Knowing their identity as sons and daughters and recognizing the moment they've come to; they are rising up in compassion and confidence and releasing an epic witness. Using revelatory gifts of words of knowledge and prophecies and becoming the voice of God to people who may never have stepped into a church. By stepping into this convergence moment, they are praying for people and leading them to the Lord. Could this lead into a New Jesus People movement; is history repeating itself, should we expect a greater harvest than previous generations?  In this episode of Keep It 100, we will have a deeper dive into the conversation of Prophetic Evangelism, the New Jesus People movement and hear from missionary revivalist Jessi Green.

Do you know someone who is “so far gone” that you think they will never get saved? Then The Conversion of Jay Koopman will inspire you to preach the gospel to every creature (Mark 16:15 KJV), no matter where they are at. Raised by a prostitute and a drug dealer, Jay Koopman never went to church or heard about God.  Abandoned much of the time, and physically abused by both of his parents, Jay grew angrier and angrier till he was almost unreachable, even by his family members.  Following in his step-father's footsteps, Jay became a drug dealer himself. Eventually, he was caught and taken before a judge who sentenced him to Teen Challenge instead of prison. It was here that Jay met Christ and learned disciplines – especially how to honor authority – that caused him to succeed wherever he went. Jay went on to become a pastor of a large church, which he recently laid down to be an evangelist in the “Let Us Worship” Movement lead by Sean Feucht.  He is now leading thousands to Christ across America. Jay Koopman Bio During 2020 in the midst of the pandemic, Jay joined Sean Feucht to travel the nation and see revival in America. Together, they have seen thousands saved, baptized, and empowered to stand boldly for the truth of the Gospel. Jay has been in full-time ministry for 20+ years, dedicating himself to both raising up the next generation and serving the anointed pastors and generals in the faith that God has placed in his life. In 2003, in the city of Los Angeles, Jay pastored a young adult and youth ministry that broke out in revival. It grew from 20 to 500 people in a matter of two years. Jay's radical passion for Jesus has brought a message of hope, healing, restoration and transformation In 2021, Jay's spiritual father, Pastor Ché Ahn of Harvest Rock Church, empowered and sent him out to travel with Sean Feucht/Let Us Worship in faith to see a new Jesus People Movement.  He is a gifted preacher, motivator, and leader that God has used to bring revival to churches. Jay has a desire to use his experience of revival and church growth to raise Kingdom leaders. His hope is to see the power of God transform people's lives, their churches, their cities and our nation.  www.letusworship.us

4 Breakpoint Moments for Pentecostal Churches Today

Foundational Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 16, 2020 53:55

The Pentecostal movement is at a breakpoint moment. She has never faced such a challenge in the one hundred and thirteen years of her history. It is the making of a perfect storm spiritually, with cultural pressure from without and ecclesiastical pressure from within. This hedonistic, pluralistic cultural of relativism is no longer demanding the church to be tolerant and sensitive to the new norms, but to embrace them or be labeled as intolerant, homophobic, Islamophobic, and extremist. The Equality Act of 2019 that has passed the U.S. Congress and is now in the Senate increases that pressure exponentially. At the same time this cultural pressure is reaching unimaginable proportions the Pentecostal movement has a new generation of spiritual leaders that have never experienced authentic revival and spiritual awakening, but have been educated from kindergarten through university in a post-modern system. Their entire education and training have been within a system that has rewritten history and moral values. Even within our Christian universities the influence of Christianity upon U.S. history and the significant impact revival movements have made upon our culture has been rewritten. This is a very toxic spiritual cocktail. It has created a spiritual prism vastly different from their spiritual grandfathers who gave birth to the Pentecostal outpouring at the turn of the twentieth century and the spiritual fathers and mothers who came to faith and the baptism of the Holy Spirit during the Jesus People Movement and the Charismatic Renewal. We are facing a challenging task.. 4 Breakpoint Moments for Pentecostal Churches Today Current spiritual trends in the Spirit-filled church do not give a solid foundation for the next generation. Forty-six percent (46%) of born again millennials, those who are twenty-three years old to thirty-eight years old, believe the Bible is the actual Word of God and should be taken literally, word for word. That is not a strong spiritual pool from which to raise up the new generation of leaders in the Pentecostal movement. The framework being built on this foundation is just as weak. 1. Tongues or No Tongues Recent research has revealed one-third or less of those attending a Pentecost-Charismatic church speak in tongues. Added to this spiritual weakness is the new trend that some of the founding movements within Pentecost have changed their stance regarding the initial evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit. They are now teaching speaking in tongues maybe one of the manifestations of the baptism not necessarily the initial evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit. 2. Open Manifestation or Behind Closed Doors According to a recent survey only fifty percent of Pentecostal/Charismatic churches have an open display of the manifestation gifts of the Holy Spirit. Spiritual gifts such as prophetic words, tongue and interpretation, and healing and deliverance are not permitted in the Sunday morning worship celebration. The expressed concern is for the un-churched or pre-churched attendees. They would not understand and might become disturbed by such a display. It may cause the public to think we are a “holy roller” church. Pastors find it difficult to regulate and to make certain such a display is done in proper order. If permitted at all, spiritual gifts are to be exercised in home groups, small Bible studies, or in private meetings. 3. Gender Dysphoria or Abomination to God Leading proponents of the new psychiatric disorder gender dysphoria are having far reaching impact into Christian universities through the psych departments. The impact is even being seen in the board meetings of leadership and pastor’s offices as pressure mounts for the church to embrace the medical model of human behavior. Alcoholism, narcotic addiction, sexual addiction, depression, anger issues and others are commonly referred to as a sickness. The church has slowly embraced dealing with such human behavior from the medical model and not from the Holy Scriptures that refer to them as sinful behavior that require repentance and cleansing by the blood of Jesus. Now the pressure is coming for the church to embrace gender identity disorders (GID) or gender dysphoria as a medical issue. The church is being asked to accept the possibility for someone to be a born again, spiritual baptized believer and be a boy in a girl’s body or a girl in a boy’s body. After accepting GID we are asked to embrace same-sex relationships, transgender, and the LGBTQ+ agenda. The church is under great pressure to embrace a world view of human sexuality from the new psychological perspective and social normative rather than a biblical perspective. 4. Infallible Scripture or Cultural Correctness The psychological perspective and social normative of human sexuality are called an abomination by God in His Holy Word. With less than half of the born again millennials embracing the Word of God as being infallible and should be taken literally, pressure is rising from within the church to embrace the social norm as well as from without. The question arises will the new generation of Pentecostal pastors and leaders be influenced by cultural demands and political correctness or by the conviction of the infallible inerrancy of Holy Scripture? At this point, what used to be the obvious is no longer so. Too many Pentecostal leaders are softening their position on the initial evidence of Holy Spirit baptism; the public display of the gifts of the Spirit and same-sex relationships. What is so amazing, almost mind boggling, is everywhere you look in church history and around the globe today, authentic revival has always been accompanied by the following characteristics. A great conviction the Bible is God’s holy and infallible Word that must be taken literally and obeyed; A great outpouring of the Holy Spirit accompanied by unusual signs and wonders; people falling in trances, sounds of wailing and crying, other manifestations; Usual order and liturgy were set aside for the deeper working of the Holy Spirit; Sinners, un-churched, pre-churched, were called to repentance openly and great conviction of sin followed; Holiness and sexual purity were understood to be the biblical standard of living for a true follower of Jesus Christ. Revival and spiritual awakening always awakens the sleepy church and calls the sinful culture to repentance. When the church remains sleepy conviction of sin is weakened and the culture proceeds deeper into sin and the level of acceptable immorality becomes more and more extreme. That is the grave issue today. Many will question why I would juxtapose accepting the infallible Word of God, speaking in tongues, and open manifestations of the gifts of the Spirit with the pressure to embrace gender dysphoria. This is the reason. A sleepy church has little power to bring conviction of sin and to call for purity and holy living. The church slowly embraces sinful behavior while the world runs full speed into deeper darkness. John the Baptist promised, “He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire” (Matthew 3:11b MEV). The only hope for the world is an awakened church baptized in the Holy Spirit and fire. We are in desperate need for a new Pentecostal outpouring, a Jesus People Movement, a Charismatic Renewal. Yet, the new awakening of God will be as different as each of those were from one another. What will not be different, is the life-giving power of the Holy Spirit working and moving in the hearts and transforming lives of men and women. It is truly a breakpoint moment for Pentecostal churches. God grant a new outpouring of your Spirit on your church. Join me with my friends Matt Whalen and Tom Ledbetter as we discuss prophetic perspectives on the state of the church, revival, reformation and new wineskins.    From the Book of Genesis, God has desired to build a family not a building or edifice. His Blueprint to build has always been based on a kingdom family of inheritors who would rule as His family on earth as it is in heaven. Many have prophesied revival that would look like another Jesus People Movement the Holy Spirit arrested the hearts of a young generation.  I believe the Jesus People movement that is coming is a revival of people who build a body and community that is centered around Jesus and become a corporate expression of the witness of Jesus. All of creation is groaning and travailing for the revelation or unveiling of the sons of God (Romans 8:21-22). Sons of God, the God the Father, the Bride of Christ, and the Bridgegroom are all language of family and intimacy. This is the language of the reformation which is a return and re-forming of the house of God into a kingdom family and not a place of business and trading.    In this podcast, my friends and I will discuss what is the true intent of the church and what the Lord is doing with us together regionally, nationally and internationally as we walk with Jesus is modeling a new wineskin.    To hear more listen to the podcast.   Purchase Wayland Henderson’s latest book on Discipleship: Walking with God: Repairing the Breach and Restoring the Ancient Path to Discipleship.   He had been carried everywhere from the time he was a baby. The only career he had was being a street beggar. He was forty years old and most of his adult life had been spent sitting on one of the main highways into the city. All of that changed in a moment. Two believers in Jesus came by his panhandling location one afternoon. He spoke to them earnestly hoping they would put some money in his cup. “I don’t have any cash today,” one of them said, “But what I do have I will gladly give to you. In the name of Jesus rise up and walk.” The believer took the man’s right hand and pulled him to his feet. For the first time in his life the man walked. It was amazing! The man walked around. Then he ran. He walked some more and then he began to jump. All the time he was doing this, he was praising God for healing him. A large crowd gathered around them, as the man continued to walk, run and jump praising God. The people were excited and began praising the two Jesus-believers who were obviously from up north. As the crowd continued to grow, the big guy began to speak to crowd in his northern accent. "Men of Israel, why does this surprise you? Why do you stare at us as if by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk…By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus' name and the faith that comes through him that has given this complete healing to him, as you can all see” (Acts 3:12, 16 NIV). Many of the people in the crowd believed and also become followers of Jesus. The religious and the political leaders were not happy, however. They arrested Peter and John, threatened them and commanded them to never speak or work in the name of Jesus Christ again. Peter and John conferred with the leaders of the church and developed a new ministry model. They rewrote their literature and adopted a ministry style that was more inclusive and inviting. They contextualized their sermons to the culture, seeking to be more tolerant of those with a different lifestyle and religious belief, they modified their rhetoric. Oh, wait! That is 21st century western Christianity. That certainly is not what happened in Jerusalem in 33 AD. The Apostles Peter and John left the court room with the threats and the command to no longer speak and work in the Name of Jesus Christ. While the voices of the religious and the political leaders were ringing in the halls of justice, they were not resounding in the hearts of these men of God. The Apostles met with the church and told them what had happened then they went to prayer. They were not whining nor crying because of rejection and fear of the government. They cried out, “Now, Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word, by stretching out Your hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus" (Acts 4:29-30 NKJV). There are seven things the church of the 21st century must learn from the Book of Acts if we are going to make a difference at this time. God has given the western church a brief window. It is a small window right now, but the believers must make it a highway for the people (Isaiah 62:10). Instead of cowering in the face of political correctness, cultural tolerance and threat of litigation, the church must take seven bold steps. 1. The believers must be baptized with the Holy Spirit and consumed with holy fire. 2. Believers must not allow the fear of man or political correctness to intimidate the church and force it to conform to the culture of the world. 3. Believers must teach and preach the Word of God boldly with signs and wonders of the Holy Spirit confirming the truth of the Word of God. 4. Believers must fill our cities with the truth of God’s Word. Lies, distortions and disinformation are filling the minds of the people. We must not compromise or rewrite the absolute truth of God’s Word. It is the truth that will set them free. 5. Rejoice when persecution comes. Do not grumble and complain, but celebrate that you are counted worthy and keep on faithfully doing the work of God. 6. Make our church buildings, classroom and worship centers houses of earnest prayer. Fill our living rooms with seasons of earnest prayer. 7. Create holy fear in the heart of city, state and government officials because of the godly authority and spiritual power with which the church is working and the great favor the church has with the people because of the transformed lives. Look at what happened to the believers that day when the Apostles Peter and John and the church prayed for boldness instead of fear and compromise. “And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness. Now the multitude of those who believed were of one heart and one soul; neither did anyone say that any of the things he possessed was his own, but they had all things in common. And with great power the apostles gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And great grace was upon them all” (Acts 4:31-33 NKJV). I came to salvation and entered ministry during the Jesus People Movement and the Charismatic Renewal. The boldness and love of the church was irresistible. They were always talking about Jesus and His power to save and to heal. Everyone was talking about being filled with the Holy Spirit. Full Gospel Business Men’s luncheons and dinners, Woman’s Aglow luncheons, musicians and singers in the park, all of them boldly encouraging people to get saved and baptized in the Holy Spirit. People were healed and thousands of lives were transformed. Even Time magazine featured what was happening across America. The front cover, June 21, 1971, was The Jesus Revolution and a feature article “Wanted Jesus Christ,  Allas: The Messiah The Son of God King of Kings Lord of Lords Prince of Peace, etc.” The full measure of the impact of this move of God can be seen by the fact this same magazine had featured on its front cover April 8, 1966, “Is God Dead?” What a huge impact in just five years. The power of God was being revealed at that time because the church was being what Jesus declared His church would be in Matthew 16:18-19. I am not an old guy living in the fog of past glory longing for the good old days. I fully believe in, and long for, what Almighty God said His church should be today - a church filled with the Holy Spirit, consumed with holy fire, and operating in power and authority that transforms cities. That should be, and can be, happening right now. In my church, we have seen men and women who have received hopeless medical diagnosis experience miracles. A stage four brain tumor disappeared and the surgeon was shocked when he could not find it. A woman with stage four cancer amazed her doctors when it disappeared. A man was sent home by his doctor to “get his house in order” because his medical condition was hopeless, but God instantly healed him. A man with one blind eye, and going blind in the other, was instantly healed. We have seen hopeless marriages, heading for divorce, healed and dozens of teenagers from unchurched homes coming to salvation. T hese miracles are not happening by preachers and healing evangelists, but by truck drivers, farm workers, school teachers, company employees and high school students. God wants His church in the 21st century to be like the church in the Book of Acts, “You have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine…” The church must not compromise. She must wait on the Lord in prayer and fasting until the majority of the people are baptized with the Holy Spirit and operating in the power of God. We must faithfully preach and teach the uncompromised Word of God and then watch as the God the Word confirms His truth with miracles, signs and wonders. Be sure to read part one of this post here: It Is Not a Political Problem - Part One The philosophies and reasoning of the Enlightenment and humanistic philosophy have battered the shores of the United States since the time of Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Paine. Each time it began to take root a fresh spiritual awakening rose against the movement. The last eighty years have not gone well for this nation that was founded in covenant with Almighty God. The Pentecostal outpouring of 20th century began to lose strength in the 1940’s and higher criticism began to grow in the seminaries and Bible colleges of the nation questioning the infallibility of the Holy Bible. The Jesus People Movement and Charismatic Renewal brought a new wave of life and spiritual awakening in the 1960’s and ‘70’s. It too began to fade away in the mid 1980’s. There have been outbursts over the last twenty years, like the Toronto Airport, or in Brownsville, Florida, and the Billy Graham Crusade in Portland, Oregon. None of them impacted the nation or changed the culture. Post-modernism began to sweep across the United States in the 1960’s, and by the 1990’s America began to embrace a post-Christian philosophy. During these years of embracing post-modernism the United States broke covenant with Almighty God. June 25, 1962 – removed prayer from public schools; 1963 – removed Bible reading from public schools; January 22, 1973 – abortion was legalized; November 8, 1994 – Oregon legalized assisted suicide; seven states followed Oregon in legalizing assisted suicide; June 26, 2015 – same-sex marriage legalized; The youth and adults of America have a love affair with the demonic in movies, novels, and music while at the same time Jesus Christ is mocked and ridiculed. January 20, 2019 was a tragic day for the United States. Tony Marco of CNN reported on January 23, 2019 in an article titled, New York Puts New Measure to Protect Access to Abortion Even if Roe v. Wade is Overturned, “Not only will the law preserve access to abortions, it also removes abortion from the state's criminal code. This would protect doctors or medical professionals who perform abortions from criminal prosecution. The law also now allows medical professionals who are not doctors to perform abortions in New York… The law also addresses late-term abortions. Under New York's Reproductive Health Act, they can be performed after 24 weeks if the fetus is not viable or when necessary to protect the life of the mother.” Caleb Parke reported on FoxNews.com, January 23, 2019, “New York Governor, Andrew Cuomo… called it, ‘a historic victory for New Yorkers and for our progressive values’ on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court decision that legalize abortion in United States...  Under the [New York] Reproductive Health Act, non-doctors are now allowed to conduct abortions and the procedure could be done until the mother's due date if the woman's health is endangered or if the fetus is not viable. The previous law only allowed abortions after 24 weeks of pregnancy if a woman's life was at risk.” What is actually being reported? New York State now has a law making abortion available up to the time of birth. The argument in favor of such a law stipulates life in womb is not “viable life.” It is not a human being because it is incapable of making a contribution to society. This is nothing less than the nihilistic philosophy coming to the shores of the United States. When a nation, who once knew and served Almighty God, exchanges the knowledge of the Lord of Hosts for humanistic reasoning and embraces a philosophy absent of the fear of the Lord and the ways of God; they will always embrace the doctrine of demons and a culture of death. Tragically, that is the culture of 21st century United States of America. What is the answer? Where will the solution be found for a culture that calls good evil and evil good? The only place is the Word of Almighty God and the power of the Holy Spirit impacting the lives of men and women. There is a double tragedy. It Is Not a Political Problem - A Double Tragedy Not only has the culture of the United State moved post-modern and post-Christ; the Christian church in the United States has fallen into the error the Apostle Paul warned about in his first epistle to Timothy. “Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron” (1Timothy 4:1-2 NKJV). At a time when the Christian church should be calling the United States to repentance and to return to Almighty God and the covenant she has made with Him; the church is embracing the same sins as the culture. The visible pulpits with the loudest voices are not preaching the absolute truth of God’s Word. 1. They are not calling the leaders of this nation to repentance. Like it was in the time of Josiah, the Word of God has been lost in the house of the Lord. The preachers are not making a clear distinction between the sacred and the worldly, between the holy and the unholy. They are painting everything with a white wash. The ability of the leaders of our nation to distinguish between truth and error, right and wrong has been disabled because the pulpits make no distinction. 2. The second part of this tragedy is the lamp has gone out. The light of God’s glory is not shining in the house of the Lord because the Christian church is not hungering and thirsting for the Holy Spirit’s presence and ministry. They are not waiting upon Him and seeking His power to cloth their work and to empower their meetings. Instead, they have spent hours of energy and thousands of dollars creating stage presence and entertainment that energizes the crowed with “a form of godliness but denies the power there of.” The Christian church has no power to transform a nation and its culture because it will not do what Jesus commanded His disciples. “Wait… until you are clothed with power from on high… But, you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you…” (Luke 24:49; Acts 1:8 MEV). The United States does not have a political problem. She has a spiritual problem. She has a weak and anemic Christian church that is unable to address the powers of darkness and the entrenched sin of this culture. There is good news for the United States. This is not a hopeless situation. We must restore the house of Lord and recover the Word of God. The redeemed believers must set their heart to make a fresh covenant with God. They must remove the things that defile their heart and seek authentic holiness in the house of the Lord. They must give themselves to prayer, fasting, and waiting on the Lord for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit so the light and the fire of God is in the house of the Lord again. The Word of God must be recovered in the house of the Lord. The pastors and the leaders of the church must embrace the infallible and inerrant Word of God. Preach the Bible as the absolute truth. Preach without compromise. Preach with boldness. Preach with the anointing and power of the Holy Spirit. God will do the work. The Holy Spirit will convict of sin and of righteousness. Revival will come to the Christian church and authentic spiritual awakening will come and transform this nation. The late 1960’s were culture changing in America and Great Britain. February 7,1964, Pan Am flight 101 landed at JFK International Airport in New York City and was welcomed by four thousand screaming fans. The modern day British invasion of America had landed, as the Beatles disembarked, a new era of music was launched. 1964 also saw the rise of the LSD culture. Professor Timothy Leary was the father of LSD, after he was fired from Harvard University. Ken Kesey and his Merry Pranksters began traveling across the USA in the psychedelic bus “Further” bringing their “electric Kool-Aid to the youth of America.” The Hippie culture was “turning on, tuning in, and dropping out.” American youth were protesting the Vietnam War by “making love, not war.” The Beatles released the psychedelic album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band in 1967. That summer between 75,000 and 100,000 Hippies gathered at the “Summer of Love” in the Haight-Ashbury area of San Francisco. Another counter culture movement invaded this mind expanding culture of free love. Several people experiencing a call from God began converging on the west coast at the same time. Don Williams on staff at Hollywood Presbyterian Church started a coffee house, “The Salt Company.” “The Living Room”, also a coffee house opened in the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco, led by Pastor John McDonald and two born again hippies, Ted and Elizabeth Wise. Tony and Sue Alamo, Jewish record promoters who were born again in 1967 began a street ministry. Duane Pederson began publishing “The Hollywood Free Paper” a Jesus People newspaper. Hundreds of hippies were coming to Christ and were being baptized in the Pacific Ocean. It became known as “The Jesus People Movement.” Although there were many segments, the consistent theme of this new move of God was, “There is only one way” and there was a strong emphasis on the Holy Spirit. While this counter culture move of God was happening among the hippies another move of God was taking place unexpectedly. Father Dennis Bennett, pastor of St Mark’s Episcopal Church of Van Nuys, CA announced on Palm Sunday 1960 and again on Easter Sunday that he had received the baptism of the Holy Spirit, just like the Apostles on the day of Pentecost. God was bringing a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the established mainline church. Two professors at Duquesne University were thirsty for more of God. They began seeking and were given a copy of The Cross and the Switchblade and They Speak With Other Tongues. They received the baptism of the Holy Spirit in the fall of 1966. They invited twenty-five students from the university on a three day Holy Spirit retreat in February 1967. Each student was to read the Book of Acts chapters one to four and the book The Cross and the Switchblade. There was a mighty encounter of the Holy Spirit that weekend and many received the baptism of the Holy Spirit. The experienced jumped from Duquesne University in Pittsburg, PA, to Notre Dame University and then to Michigan State. The Catholic Charismatic Renewal was ignited. The convergence of these three movements, the Jesus People among the Hippies, the Charismatic Renewal among the Catholics, and the fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit in the established churches, brought a spiritual awakening to America at a critical time. The soul of America was floundering. The existential humanism of Sartre and the philosophy of Nietzsche and Kierkegaard were blossoming into the Post-modern philosophy of Lyotard, Derrida and others. This great outpouring of the Holy Spirit swept thousands of young people into the Kingdom of God; brought life to sleepy churches; and resurrected churches that had been dead for years. New wine skins brought Spirit power and fresh life to movements that had long ago lost the vision and mission. It also gave birth to new ministries that turned the world upside down, like Youth With a Mission and Last Days Ministries. The largest move for world missions in over one hundred years was born as young people, middle aged, and even some senior citizens left home for short term and long term service on the foreign field. God was invading the humanistic, rationalistic, pragmatic materialistic culture of the United States and impacting the world. This Is What Will Change Our City That is exactly what Jesus Christ commanded His disciples in Luke 24:36-52. He gave them the Great Commission and then commanded them, “I am sending the promise of My Father upon you. But wait in the city of Jerusalem until you are clothed with power from on high” (v.49). What was the promise of the Father? Luke answered that question in his second epistle, Acts 1:4-5 “Do not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, of which you have heard from Me. For John baptized in water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now” (MEV). Jesus Christ was giving birth to His Church and commissioning them to go into a pagan, humanistic, rationalistic, sex-crazed culture with the Gospel of redemption, reconciliation and holiness. He knew the powers of darkness would boldly resist and counter attack with every force and authority at their disposal. He knew the message of the Church would be counter culture and the call for moral purity would be politically incorrect. The church would be viewed as intolerant, hateful, and resistant to government authority. Jesus knew Satan and his forces would stir up angry crowds and that arrogant religious leaders and proud Roman governors would bring accusation and persecution against the Apostles and the church. They would need a supernatural power to stand against such forces. They needed miracle working power to set people free from demonic possession and bring healing and restoration from sinful living and incurable disease. That power can only come when disciples are “clothed with power from on high.” No amount of education, seminary training, or religious form can make this possible. It is only the dynamic power of the Holy Spirit! This is consistent in Scripture. The first disciples waited in Jerusalem and ten days later they were baptized in the Holy Spirit and began turning that city upside down with the miraculous work and power of the Holy Spirit. Deacon Philip went north to Samaria preaching the Gospel. People were being saved, demons were cast out of people and new converts were baptized in water. When the Apostles in Jerusalem heard the report about the Samaritans, they sent Peter and John to Samaria. “When they came down, they prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit for still He had come on none of them. They were only baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit” (Acts 8:15-17 MEV). God sent the Gospel to the Gentiles for the first time and the baptism of the Holy Spirit accompanied the new work. “While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all those who heard the word. All the believers of the circumcision who had come with Peter were astonished, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been pour out even on the Gentiles. For they heard them speaking in other tongues and magnifying god Then Peter continued, ‘Can anyone forbid water for baptizing these, who have received the Holy Spirit as we have? So he commanded them to be baptized in the Name of the Lord” (Acts 10:44-48 MEV). When the Apostle Paul met twelve disciples of John the Baptist at Ephesus, his first question to them was “Have you received the Holy Spirit since you believed” (Acts 19:2)? They had not been taught about the Holy Spirit. So the Apostle took the time to teach them about Jesus Christ, salvation by faith, and the promise of Holy Spirit baptism. Then Paul baptized them in the name of the Jesus Christ, laid hands on them, and they received the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Do you find it significant the Apostle’s first question to these men was about receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit? God thought it was so important He wrote it in His Word. It is significant that every new work of God recorded in Scripture was accompanied with a new outpouring of Holy Spirit baptism. It is the difference maker. Just a brief review of church history will reveal each new move of God was accompanied with a fresh out pouring of Holy Spirit for it cannot happen without it. The world desperately needs people “clothed with power from on high.” That is the only way the church can deal with this pagan, demonized, sexualized culture. The powers of darkness have entrenched this generation and it is only the dynamic power of the Holy Spirit that will enable the church to confront and victoriously destroy the strongholds of hell. It is not more smoke and lights; better worship bands and singers; and hip preachers that will win our cities and turn our schools and universities upside down. It will be those believers who do exactly what Jesus commanded the Apostle… “But wait… until you are clothed with power from on high.” We must become passionately thirsty for Holy Spirit (John 7:37-39). We must specifically ask Him to baptize His people with the Holy Spirit (Luke 11:9-13). We must spend time in His presence worshiping Him with all our heart (Luke 24:50-53) We must then joyfully receive the fire and power of Holy Spirit (Acts 2:1-4). The power of the Holy Spirit will enable ordinary people to do the works of Jesus and even greater works (John 14:13). That is exactly what is desperately needed in our violent, immoral, demonized culture. Holy Spirit is the difference maker. Get my new study on the Holy Spirit!

Welcome to the January installment of Aquarium Drunkard’s recurring Transmissions podcast, a series of interviews and audio esoterica from Aquarium Drunkard. For our first episode of 2018, we explore three unique stories. First, we dive into the story of Ozma Records’ new reissue of the Voyager Golden Record. Launched into outer space in 1977 onboard the Voyager space probes, the Golden Record was a sort of cosmic mixtape, designed by a team led by Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan as a representation of life, arts, and culture on Earth. We spoke to co-producer David Pescovitz of Boing Boing from his office at the Institute For the Future about how this new reissue allows us to more fully understand the scope of the Golden Record —and what it has to say to listeners today. Then, we sit down with comedian, writer, and musician Tim Heidecker. Best know for his work on Tim and Eric Awesome Show — Great Job, Decker, and films like The Comedy, Heidecker is an extraordinarily busy guy: he recently finished The Trial of Tim Heidecker, a part of his meta-comedy saga On Cinema with Gregg Turkington — AKA Neil Hamburger. He’s also got a recent album out, Too Dumb for Suicide, a collection of songs about the president. We dive into his strange, sometimes confusing world. And finally, we close out the show by shining a light on some of our favorite mixtapes from the Aquarium Drunkard archives, The End is at Hand collections, a four-volume series of super-obscure, often private press, outsider psychedelic guitar and folk music from the ‘60s and ‘70s centered around the Jesus People Movement. We’re joined by BlackForrestry — Josh Swartwood and Doug Cooper — who put these mixes together, to investigate the roots and feral faith of these “Jesus Freaks,” whose apocalyptic visions shimmer throughout these mixtapes — and whose faith still speaks to Josh and Doug.

Baptist preacher Kent Philpott has a heart for sharing the Gospel with his Muslim neighbors. And he is ready to help you share the Good News as well with his second-edition book titled, “If Allah Wills.”Philpott, pastor of evangelical churches for 45 years, former leader in the Jesus People Movement in San Francisco, has been writing about Islam since 2001.Since 1984 he has worked as pastor of Miller Avenue Baptist Church in Mill Valley, California. He was a long-time baseball coach for high schools and San Quentin State Prison. Philpott is the director of Earthen Vessel Publishing and author of numerous books.“If Allah Wills” has 15 chapters, seven appeals (asking Muslim readers to consider and reflect on a point), seven contrasts (asking Muslim readers to compare and contrast point of theology), and one appeal and contrast that essentially is asking Muslim readers to think critically about Islam. Philpott does not condemn Muslims or attack the tenets of Islam or the prophet Muhammad but reaches out with care and concern with an offer of the love and grace of Jesus.I interviewed Philpott in June 2016 at the International Christian Retail Show in Cincinnati.“I’ve always had an interest in Islam since 2001. Like many people I was angry at Muslim people, fearful and wondering what’s going on. For reasons I can’t explain I feel like God gave me a love for Muslim people.”Philpott said his town holds the Muslim Center of Mill Valley. He began to reach out to the center’s congregation after he held an Islamic study class at his church. During that process, God changed his heart. He saw Islam as a dangerous religion, but instead of making him judgmental, he wanted to reach out to Muslims. He invited a Sunni imam from the mosque to speak to his church, then did the same with a Shia imam, an Afghani living in the East Bay.Philpott said he studied what the imams said. He conducted research on Islam using non-Christian materials so his research would not carry a Christian bias.“I was afraid of that,” he said. “I had it in myself.”His research brought him to such topics as Muslims who had become atheists or Sufis , such as reformer Ayaan Hirsi Ali.“My interest was reaching them with the Gospel,” Philpott said. Muslims have a high regard for Jesus, but they consider him a prophet who will return on the day of judgment; Muslims deny the cross.“If Allah Wills” is 116 pages; Philpott said he tried to keep it under 100 to keep the price low to help people buy it. The book is written to help Christians understand Islam and how to approach Muslims with the Gospel. The book invites Muslims to examine what they believe. It does not attack them. The last chapter tells who Jesus is and goes through the seven “I am” statements Jesus made in the chapter of John in the Bible.Philpott said he has a heart for Muslims, whom he said are stuck in their religion. It was only when he visited the mosque that he learned how “absolutely obsessive it becomes. To be a faithful Muslim you have to be an obsessive compulsive individual. I’m a little bit that way myself. I can see how these people are really trapped in it. It’s the ablutions, the washings, that are so consuming.”Before praying in the mosque, Muslims must to go a room that is set aside for washing. They wash their hands up to the elbows and the feet up to the ankles. They wash the nose three times up to the base of the skull and then inhale because, Muslims believe, the jinn (supernatural creatures) come up into them through the nose, so you have to expel them to be pure before praying.“It’s all-consuming. It’s far more than Christianity in what it’s demanding of you.”Some Muslims become Sufis to try to reform the religion. (Sufism is a mystical branch of Islam.) To leave Islam is to lose all your identity, Philpott said.Philpott said he has spoken the last couple of years with a number of ex-Muslims who became Christians after seeing Jesus in visions or dreams. “It takes that for them to convert, and even still they have a difficult time. (Helping guide) Muslims is not easy. Their view of the Bible has been distorted.” They have learned defenses against the Bible since an early age in school.“These are the most spiritual people,” he said. “These people want to know God and serve God.”“If Allah Wills” is available on Amazon and on Philpott’s website, evpbooks.com. He and his wife Katie own Earthen Vessel Publishing. On evpbooks.com, use code friendofEVP to save 20 percent on “If Allah Wills,” normally a $7.95 cover price.

Recalling "The Jesus Movement" A Love Song to Jesus! Jangling 60's Rickenbacher guitars(ala The Byrds), nice 60's E Bass, Solid Backbeat on the Drums, Tamborines, catchy melody. To all those who met Jesus in the "Jesus People Movement" we pray this video will kindle a fresh renewal of your First Love for Jesus! The Jesus Movement (Youth Revival in the early 70's) was a form of pure Christianity reminiscent of the Early Church. For those of you who were born again during the Jesus Movement, you know that it was a time of First Love, of purity of devotion to the Lord Jesus, and a level of fellowship and love that does not exist in the "Megachurches" so prevalent today. Aren't you so thankful that Jesus doesn't ever want us to lose that first love for Him! The music that was created in the Jesus Movement, in our opinion, is unparalleled in purity, fervency, and commitment to the person of the Lord Jesus. This original worship song itself has a bit of a 60s/70's feel.We pray that it is a blessing to you Lyrics below.blessings,Shiloh Worship Music www.shilohworshipmusic.comLove Never-Ending© 2012 Shiloh Worship MusicI Was Born In a TimeWhen The Times There Were A-Changin'I Was Blowing In the WindWith No Direction Home!Chorus I Was Looking for a Love Never-EndingYou Came to Me--JesusYou Brought Me into Your Heart!I Was Born in a TimeWhen Peace Was All We WantedI Was Searching for The PeaceThat Passes All Understanding!I Was Born in a TimeWhen Love Was Flowers in My HairThen I Took the TimeTo Look Right in Your Heart--Lord!© 2012 Shiloh Worship Music COPY FREELY;This Music is copyrighted to prevent misuse, however, permission is granted for non-commercial copying-Radio play permitted- www.shilohworshipmusic.comCome and check out our YouTube channel www.youtube.com/user/ShilohWorshipGroup.  Free Christian Worship Music on the iTunes StorePlease check out our free Christian Worship Music on the iTunes Store.
