From a 70s funk band, to an 80s southern rock band and the last 23 years in an English blues rock band, Bryan Bassett's guitar chops have probably made you get up a dance at one time or another. Hailing from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Bassett was surrounded by incredible musicians in a city where jazz flourished in the 40s and 50s expanding to an incredible nightlife scene full of clubs and lounges belting sounds of rock-and-roll and funk from every entrance. Bassett found music in his hands as a young teen one Christmas morning opening presents in his childhood home. “It was a Harmony Rocket, a big red guitar with white knobs,” Bassett said. “Santa Claus, you know, my parents had bought me that and two Jeff Beck records. I mean talk about putting up a hard thing to follow, but yeah, I loved it.” Bassett's love for guitars grew more and more. Like something out of “A Christmas Story” the young musician had a Ralphie moment. Unlike the movie where Ralphie sees the Red Ryder B.B. Gun in the window at Higbee's, Bassett said he remembers clearly seeing one guitar he just had to have. “I used to take a bus downtown after school and to Lomakin music shop in downtown Pittsburgh and a Les Paul gold top hung in that window and I literally (said) ‘One day you will be mine,'” Bassett said. Working in a grocery store all summer the eager 17-year-old saved every penny he could. Bassett said his dad pitched in half of the money and he was able to buy his first great guitar. Bassett's first break into music happened after his friend Rob Parissi decided to disband a group called Wild Cherry, known now as the early version of the band, and decided to manage a few restaurants. “I said, ‘Rob, if you ever get back in the music business, give me a call,'” Bassett said. “After about a couple of months, I guess he got sick of the restaurant business and he called me up and said ‘OK, Brian, you know what, I'm going to put together a new version of Wild Cherry and so we started.'” It was that band that gave us the dance hit “Play that Funky Music” that's still played for its feel-good vibrations today. You know that iconic opening riff that the song is known for? That's right, Bassett is responsible for that! Over the years, all roads led to Florida and eventually, Bassett decided to take a break as he embarked on this move. He started working odd jobs and even did television repair at a Radio Shack while living in Daytona Beach. It was in Central Florida where Bassett met Dave Peverett, known as Lonesome Dave, who was the original lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist for the rock band Foghat. Bassett and Peverett became close friends and bandmates while Foghat had been on a brief hiatus. It was when they returned with all the original members that Bassett was out of a job and his friend Danny Joe Brown, who was the lead singer for the southern rock group Molly Hatchet, asked him if he wanted to join their band. Bassett recorded three albums with Molly Hatchet and toured not only in the States but abroad as well. Bassett spent a little over seven years with Molly Hatchet, but one phone call from a dear friend changed his musical path and ultimately led him back to Foghat — where he's been part of the family for over 23 years. Bassett has so many amazing stories in this episode of Riff On This, that we can't possibly cover them in this article. They range from the wild story about how the song “Play That Funky Music” was created to playing in two bands at one time and even walking into the wrong dressing room while on tour. Selección musical: 🎶 Englishman In New York, de Sting 🎶 Excalibur, de Celtica - Pipes Rock! 🎶 Who the Hell Is Killraven, de Adam Bernstein 🎶 Disappear In You, de Clandestine 🎶 Play That Funky Music, de Kactus Jack
In the mid 70s, Wild Cherry thrived in all the funk and disco hot spots, from the Northern West Virginia panhandle to the Ohio Valley region. People were getting down to the sweet sounds of “Play That Funky Music” in Steubenville, Ohio, all the way to the bright lights of the big city…of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The groundswell created by the band's popularity in these areas took the song all the way to #1 on the Billboard charts, which was unfortunately a peak they'd never come close to again. This week, we're joined by John Franklin (The Circle Season 4) to discuss the history and legacy of Wild Cherry, a band that's been the soundtrack to dancin', singin', movin', groovin', and one-night stands for decades. Veteran jazz keyboardist Brian Culbertson has a 25-album discography that offers up his signature sounds of funky instrumentals, sexy soul jams and straight-up, smooth R&B grooves. With a career of delivering some 40 Billboard No. 1 singles, he's performed and recorded with the industry's finest – from Stevie Wonder and Bootsy Collins to the late Prince and Maurice White, the founder of the iconic band, Earth Wind & Fire. Culbertson has also earned a very loyal fan base, including online music connoisseurs who follow his weekly YouTube and Facebook hang out sessions. But there's one entity where music support has dwindled over the years—terrestrial FM radio. Join Host Eddie Robinson as I SEE U continues its ongoing series dedicated to exploring the future of the smooth jazz format and speaks candidly with acclaimed producer and songwriter, Brian Culbertson. The hitmaker from Decatur, Illinois chats about why he believes jazz music discovery is almost non-existent on FM radio and how he, along with countless other musicians, rely on satellite radio and the digital landscape to keep the momentum and energy of the jazz genre afloat.

We all have those songs that feel like they're basically the soundtrack to our lives right?? The right playlist can capture a moment or it can get you thru your toughest times. So today we dive into our musical influences and how music has helped to shape our lives till this point. But as usual we also have to dive into our sports bag a lil bit because it's UP in the NFL and NBA right now. Covid going crazy, Kyrie back from hiatus, and the Cowboys being carried by our Defense??? So many JEMs, so little time.
The founder of the band Wild Cherry and the creator of the iconic song “Play that Funky Music,” Rob Parissi, joins Tim to do an anatomy of a funky song. That funky song, which has been named one of the top 100-performing songs of all time. Rob tells stories and gives a hint why new generations are embracing it even today. https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/shapingopinion/Encore_-_Play_that_Funky_Music.mp3 The song is one of the best known of the disco era by one of the best-known bands of the disco era. But while so many other songs have faded along with the entire genre of disco music, this song continues to endure. The song Play that Funky Music continues to find new fans decades after it was written. Rob Parissi, one of the founders of the band Wild Cherry, and who wrote many of the band's songs, tells us what it was like at the peak of the disco era and what it was like to write that one disco song that has stood the test of time. Links Play That Funky Music – Songfacts.com Play That Funky Music – SeventiesMusic.com The Number Ones: Play That Funky Music – Stereogums Wild Cherry – AllMusic.com About this Episode's Guest Rob Parissi Robert “Rob” Parissi is an American singer, songwriter and guitarist, perhaps best known as frontman for the American funk group Wild Cherry, best known for their 1976 Parissi-penned chart-topper “Play That Funky Music”. He was born in 1950 and raised in the steel mill town of Mingo Junction, Ohio. He graduated from Mingo High School in 1968. Rob formed the band Wild Cherry in 1970 in Steubenville, Ohio, one mile north of Mingo Junction along the Ohio River. The band played the Ohio Valley region, Wheeling, West Virginia and the rest of the Northern West Virginia panhandle, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After Wild Cherry disbanded in 1979 without another major hit, Parissi became a producer and dedicated himself to adult contemporary music. In 2017, he retired from the music industry, but continues to manage the properties he created during his career.
Stevie Wonder - Light My Fire (1970) Listen to that bass player. Syreeta Wright - Spinnin' and Spinnin' (1974) No one was EVER as hot as Stevie in the '70s, and the album this came from proves that even occupied with his own music, he can lovingly produce one of the best female-sung records of the '70s. I love this factoid from Wikipedia: Three artists who performed on this album (Stevie Wonder, Deniece Williams, Michael Sembello) would all have Billboard number one songs ("I Just Called to Say I Love You", "Let's Hear It for the Boy", and "Maniac", respectively) within a year of each other, a decade after this album's release. Another artist on this album, Ollie Brown of Ollie & Jerry, would have a Billboard top ten single, "Breakin'... There's No Stopping Us", in the same one-year period. The song "Come And Get This Stuff" was originally intended for Rufus, but lead singer Chaka Khan refused to do the song. Instead, Stevie wrote "Tell Me Something Good" for them which appeared on their album Rags to Rufus. There's no word to describe how good he was in this five-year period. This song made it to #49 in the UK, and never a peep in the US, which is a shame. Gentle Giant - Weekend Cowboy (1970) I love their sound on these early demos. Less prog than they would become, a sort of The Band meets Harry Chapin. Through the filter of England, of course. Godley and Creme - Random Brainwaves/I Pity Inanimate Objects (1979) When Gary Storm played this on Buffalo's WIZR 107.7, I had never heard anything like it. I still love what they did with the backing vocals. Jimmy "Bo" Horne - Dance Across The Floor (1978) Lawrence Hilton Jacobs - Larry's Theme (1978) He was Freddie "Boom Boom" Washington on Welcome Back, Kotter and Michael Jackson's father Joe on The Jacksons: An American Dream ("Get the switch!") but I actually find his albums in the late '70s very listenable, especially this. So much shit came out from TV stars around that era. Scott Baio was the worst. Les Humphries Singers - Mexico (1972) Included here because doing this show helped me discover them. My one-man raison d'être is to make you a believer! It's not that good. Just a strange pre-sampling curio. Nino Tempo and April Stevens - Love Story (1972) From Buffalo, NY! Their biggest hit was "Deep Purple" from 1963. They were siblings. God, she was beautiful. Her first record came out in 1950 (!) but her biggest solo hit was "Teach Me, Tiger" from 1960. She reprised this in 1965, but this was virtually the same recording, with dialog implying that she had kidnapped one of The Beatles in order to seduce him. Just wow. I love it. Men At Work - Down Under (original, non-hit version) (1980) A brief retelling of The Greg Ham Story. Don't Do Drugs. Mudcrutch - Don't Do Me Like That (original, non-hit version) (1974) The almost note-for-note prototype for the Tom Petty hit a few years later. The Osmonds - War in Heaven (1973) Sammy Davis Jr. - John Shaft (1972) Ok, ok. Shaft. Ok! Shut up and let me finish my dinner. Sha Na Na PSA (1972) Pink Floyd - Scream Thy Last Scream (1967) I was surprised to learn that Nick Mason sang this. Bee Gees - Lovers (1976) This is a very strange and wonderful album track from a band on its....third ascension? Sensational Alex Harvey Band - The Dolphins (1979) I love this song as much as any I have ever played on D-Sides. I never would have heard it if not for this show. The Langley Schools Music Project - The Long and Winding Road (1977) You should read about this. I think I read about this in RE/Search magazine. The Residents - Give it To Someone Else (1980) Every song on The Commercial Album is about 60 seconds long. There are 20 per side. Wild Cherry - Baby Don't You Know (1977) A wonderful, horrible attempt to recapture the lightning of the last single, "Play That Funky Music". THIS is how you follow up a fluke hit: One more time Well we play that funky music And we were looking so good yeah Electrified funky feeling Was coming down like I thought it would So we went out on the road yeah Try to get ourselves ahead And on the way I was surprised to discover That all those funky people Had been misled, they were shouting out Black? NO! White? Right!, Oh what a sight! I really didn't know the suckers was white Baby don't you know, Baby don't you know Baby don't you know, Baby don't you know That the honkey's got soul Baby don't you know, Baby don't you know Baby don't you know, Baby don't you know That the honkey's got soul Roger Nichols and Small Circle of Friends - Don't Go Breaking My Heart (1968) So beautiful, especially the "Middle 8". Just amazing harmonies. The Free Design - Day Breaks (2001) This will be my funeral song. I don't WANT a funeral. Just a little party for people to remember funny stories about me. In life, very few people are still in touch with me in an earnest sense. People have come and gone and sometimes I look around and wonder if someone should have bought me a ball gag long ago. Still, even after all the mistakes I have made in my life and my dealings with people I have lost, I know deep down that some people will be genuinely touched by the fact that we met and decided to be in each other's lives for as long as we had. If you listen to this song and put yourself in that place, celebrate the people who DID choose to be with you, no matter WHAT you said. Everyone is broken. Everyone. You're not alone. Co-written by my friend Bruce Dedrick. The Free Design - Friendly Man (1971) Adriano Celentano - Prisencolinensinainciusol (1972) This song is being used for a commercial in the US. I like to think it's because of me. The Beatles - Revolution (Take...Your Knickers Off!) (1968)

Every great season has that one episode that's a musical. Well D'Juan provides the music and even sings a little.... Nick chimes in with his solo as well. Martin shows up in his spaceship cosplay at first. Ronnie and Jay just tell Dad jokes. The Open Bar also welcomes a new drinker to the bar stool as Travis joins the party on his way through. If the bar stools ain't rocking... don't come a knocking... Enjoy! You can support this show by visiting our merch store, or by leaving us an Apple Podcasts review.
