In this interview with Nusrat F. Jafri, we explore her much-acclaimed biographical fiction, This Land We Call Home (Penguin, 2024). The novel traces the evolution of the Bhantu caste from the 1800s to the 2000s, offering a nuanced perspective on the shifting contours of minority identity across northern India. Jafri delves into the history of the Bhantu, a community labeled as “criminal tribe” under the British Criminal Tribes Act of 1871. She examines how the repeal of this Act in 1952, followed by the denotification of these communities, brought little respite. The replacement of the Act with the Habitual Offenders Act (1952) perpetuated systemic discrimination, continuing to single out and criminalize certain communities. Jafri critiques Indian democracy for failing to protect marginalized groups like the Bhantu—not only neglecting them but actively perpetuating systemic violence. The novel also sheds light on the community's encounters with both social and state-sponsored violence, emphasizing the emancipatory potential of religious conversions. Yet, Jafri presents a complex view of this process, highlighting how conversion did not always equate to liberation, particularly for women and poorer members of the community. Drawing on her personal family history and extensive ethnographic research across northern and western India, Jafri raises a profound question for all democracies: How can democratic systems address historical prejudices and work toward creating a truly inclusive society? Nusrat F. Jafri is an award-winning cinematographer and author. Her debut non-fiction book, This Land We Call Home (Penguin, 2024), traces her family's century-long history through themes of caste, identity and politics – shaping modern India. Her filmography includes Kuchh Bheege Alfaz, Pilibhit, Sujata, and Chacha Vidhayak Hain Hummare. Born in Lucknow, she currently resides in Mumbai. The interview was conducted by Anubha Anushree and Ishita Prasher. Lilit Hakobyan edited the podcast.

Danica Shoan Ankele, Osho - ZMM - 12/29/24 - On a liberative path, we know we want to feel better but the enormity of the task, and the continuous “undoing” that it promises, can give pause. Shoan Osho explores the conditions of the Buddha's enlightenment experience, and brings to the center Sujata's role as the nourisher of life, as well as the cosmic female image of Prajna Paramita, the Mother of all Buddhas. Such images are in fact an emanation of each of us, our many forms of no-form, and are as limitless as space.

J. Darrin Gross I'd like to ask you, Sujata Shyam, what is the BIGGEST RISK? Sujata Shyam So with what I do, Darrin, where we. Invest as a fund of funds, where we're investing as a group, and placing that capital as one investor into a property or an opportunity of sorts. In in my view, the biggest risk by far that's out of our control is the operator. So the operator, you know, we have trust in the operator. We're basically betting on the jockey. In a sense, there's lots of things we control for can't control for. Do we like the deal? Do we like the market? Do we like the property? Do we like the business strategy? But we're trusting the jockey to execute the business plan, or the operator, as we call it. So the biggest risk for me, really is that the operator either, mostly it's that they start, they start acting in their own self interest, rather than in the interest of all the investors. And we try to put lots of controls on that, but ultimately, they can still cause a lot of trouble if they decide to, if they get squeezed, or if they decide for some reason to get too aggressive, that is by far the biggest risk that we have to look out for, and that's why trust in an operator and trust in the people that you operating with, and that they have not only the integrity that's needed, but also the capacity to manage the types of deals that they're doing, as well as the decision making ability to know, have I gone too far? Am I, is this like a little too far outside my capacity? Do I need to scale it back so that I don't put investors capital at risk? That's really the biggest risk, is the people.

In this installment of the "Investing Shorts" segment focused on mindset, host Sujata sits down with Kenny Rose, founder of FranShares. They discuss two key mindset shifts that have helped Kenny in business and life: the "left lane theorem" and starting each day with enthusiasm. With extensive experience across media, franchising, and alternative investing, Kenny Rose has established himself as an authority reaching over 300 million people. After getting licensed and working in traditional finance, Kenny shifted to franchise brokerage. He guided entrepreneurs through choosing from 600+ brands in 100+ industries. Leveraging this expertise, Kenny founded Semfia, an income-focused franchise brokerage. But he went further by launching FranShares, the first platform enabling retail franchise investing. FranShares has garnered huge interest with $18.4M in subscriptions and a 41,000+ waitlist, cementing Kenny as a leader in the alternative investing space. [00:02] The "Left Lane Theorem" Kenny's dad taught him this concept as a teen - when everyone is going right, don't be afraid to go left and blaze your own path. Kenny applied this to his career by leaving traditional finance to pursue franchising, an unknown industry at the time. The lesson: Take a step back and consider different options from the herd mentality. [00:05] Start Each Day With Enthusiasm Making your bed each morning starts the day off with accomplishment. Having an enthusiastic mindset is a choice and can change your whole day. Self-talk, believing in yourself, and choosing "yes" leads to more energy and opportunities. [00:09] Benefits of an Enthusiastic Mindset More energy and less fatigue throughout the day Increased luck and opportunities due to positive outlook Tendency to attract the energy you put out into the world Connect with Kenny: LinkedIn: Kenny Rose Website: FranShares Key Quotes: "Take a step back and look what everyone else is doing and don't be afraid to do something else." - Kenny Rose "People get very stuck in what's worked in the past and not what's going to work the best in the future." - Kenny Rose "How you start your day is how the rest of the day is going to go." - Kenny Rose WANT TO LEARN MORE? Want to see the video version of this podcast? Please visit Youtube here: https://youtu.be/d_dWCSRBQzE Sujata Day advises against putting a time limit on becoming a working professional in the film industry. She believes that art shouldn't be rushed and that setting arbitrary deadlines can hinder success. Instead, she suggests embracing the journey, finding joy in the pursuit of dreams, and being open to new opportunities. Sujata shares her own experience of initially pursuing engineering as a backup plan before ultimately following her passion for acting. She emphasizes the importance of continuous growth, facing rejection, and staying motivated. Sujata also expresses the positive shift in the industry, where artists support and inspire each other, creating their own work instead of waiting to be picked. She finds fulfillment in her art and feels fortunate to live her dream every day, even during challenging times. Sujata took advantage of the pandemic to immerse herself in films, TV shows, and international cinema, learning and gathering inspiration. During this period, she remained productive by writing multiple scripts and pitches for future projects. Welcome to the first episode of our brand-new bonus series “Kitchen Table Conversations”!Rachel Vindman is on Red Wine and Blue's first-ever Troublemaker Tour, chatting with suburban women at kitchen tables in Michigan, Ohio, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania. This week, she's in Rochester Hills, MI - a suburb of Detroit. She sat down with Kathy, Sujata, and Ebonei to talk about what issues are important to them coming up to the midterms, what they're hearing from others in their community, and how they can't believe their daughters and granddaughters will have fewer rights than they do. And in an unfortunately all-too-real situation for moms across America, Kathy's children's school was in lockdown during this conversation - but we want our listeners to know that everything turned out fine. Thanks for listening to Rachel's Kitchen Table Conversations! When Sujata Shyam was asked to transfer across the country for her corporate career, she decided to take 100 days off to consider her next move. 100 days turned into 18 months of traveling and experiencing the world, and Sujata soon realized she wanted a career that would help her maintain this new sense of freedom. She discovered that running her own Airbnb business could provide her with the passive income she needed, and before she knew it, she'd launched a full-fledged real estate career. Today, Sujata is the managing principal at Luxe Capital Investment Group, Ltd., an education-based investment firm focusing on multifamily, ATMs, and self-storage. In this episode, Sujata shares why she feels she isn't well-suited for the corporate world, how she started her Airbnb business, how she qualifies investments for her investors today, and why she believes that investing in real estate should be boring.
