Randy Larsen, Professor of Wildlife Ecology at BYU is today's guest. A frequent contributor to the Rokcast, Randy brings a depth of knowledge to wildlife management, especially when it comes to mule deer. On today's episode, Robby and Randy dive into these topics Buck Survival: what percentage of bucks in the population do hunters really harvest? And are the numbers different in general vs. draw units? Collared Buck Harvest: Are hunters avoiding shooting radio collared bucks? Impact of Buck:Doe Ratios on population dynamics, female condition, fawn recruitment Fawn weights across Utah units Follow Randy Larsen super interesting Instagram page at https://www.instagram.com/wildlifeprof?igsh=MTlnZWtrY3Y0cGNtYQ== Rokcast is powered by onX Hunt. This week, Randy Larsen returns to the podcast! Randy is the founding member of Cable, put in time as a touring bassist for Tombs and have been a co-host of mine on Metal Matters as well as here at EWB. He has taken some time off from podcasting to put some time and effort into his new venture as co-owner of Little Lost Records, a new eclectic record store based in Stofford Springs, CT. Dr. Larsen and Dr. Mcmillan receive "Conservationist of the Year" at the 2023 Hunt Expo The last thing you are going to hear any "coffee shop biologist" say, is that fewer bucks on the landscape would make more fawns. In fact, every expert knows the only way we are ever going to "increase deer populations" is to cut tags and limit hunting bucks. I mean, look at all the units out west with extremely limited buck hunting, the mule deer populations are EXPLODING there! Right?! Well..... ok maybe not. Why? If reducing buck mule deer tags is beneficial, why aren't those populations exploding? The truth is, and yes, even in 2023 no matter how they identify, the doe deer or females in the population "grow the herd". Think of it like this, a rancher would never have a pasture full of bulls when he can have that same pasture full of mother cows. He is going to have enough bulls to breed his cows, that gives him maximum productivity. There of course comes a social component to hunting, and YES, hunters want to see bucks, big bucks. Where is the best place to manage buck to doe ratios? That is the million dollar question that; spoiler alert, we don't answer. However, Dr. Randy Larsen and Dr. Brock Mcmillan of the BYU Ecology lab jump on todays podcast to share some professional light on it, as well as talk about a variety of things involving mule deer biology and what they are learning. These guys are some of the best in their field and heavily involved with some of the foremost mule deer research there is. As always, I think this podcast will help hunters get a deeper understanding of some of the biology and science that is Mule Deer Management. Pregnancy Rates comparing 14:100 vs. 26:100 Buck:Doe Ratio Cause Specific Mortality is important information Dr. Brock Mcmillan on the Gohunt Podcast Dr. Larsen on the Rokcast Podcast last year with Robby Denning Dr. Larsen on Feeding Deer Podcast

Have you heard of Operation 'Dark Winter'? It used to be a conspiracy theory. Now, it's not. Here's the first paragraph explaining Operation Dark Winter from Wikipedia: "Operation Dark Winter was the code name for a senior-level bio-terrorist attack simulation conducted on June 22nd and June 23rd, 2001. It was designed to carry out a mock version of a covert and widespread smallpox attack on the United States. Tara O'Toole and Tom Inglesby of the Johns Hopkins Center for Civilian Biodefense Strategies (CCBS) / Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), and Randy Larsen and Mark DeMier of Analytic Services were the principal designers, authors, and controllers of the Dark Winter project." This episode of Talking Mule Deer features Brigham Young University wildlife researchers telling us about their mule deer studies in Utah. Brock and Randy, both avid mule deer hunters, are professors in the BYU Wildlife Ecology Lab and landed at the university 13 years ago when they applied for the same job—and both got hired! Brock and Randy discuss one of their early projects evaluating fawn mortality in the Monroe permit area by collaring fawns shortly after birth. This project gave them insights into how predation, along with habitat health that maintains body condition in does, correlate to overall survival. BYU graduate student Tabitha Hughes details her work on both elk calves and mule deer fawns that has continued to other herds, including the Cache Valley as well as her current study area in the Book Cliffs area of Utah. We wrap up by hearing how Randy and Brock hope to use the data to understand how habitat conservation and restoration projects are impacting overall mule deer populations.

Episode 61 is a conversation with Randy Larsen, this is the second time Randy has been on the podcast. You may know him from his bands Cable and Empty Flowers. On this pretty free form episode we have a conversation about various subjects including the ending of Cable, a new musical project he's involved in now as well as a bunch of different bands we go back and forth about. This was a lot of fun and I love talking to Randy about music, especially in a loose format like this.

2018 is almost over. A lot of great records came out this past year and everyone is busily putting together their Top 10 lists. Here at Metal Matters, we do things a little different. Instead of a Top 10, we are doing a Top 5 because I feel you often times have to reach to fill out the second 5 of a Top 10.Anyway, Randy Larsen and I talk about our Top 5 favorite records. Episode 37 is a conversation with Randy Larsen. You may know Randy from his band Cable who have been putting out good quality heavy music since the 90's and are set to release a new record next year as he explains late in this episode. We talk about how he got into music, other musical projects he's been involved in as well as his guest hosting on the Everything Went Black and Metal Matters podcasts. Randy was a great guest for this podcast, his enthusiasm and humble, down to earth personality made this feel like I was talking to an old friend.
These days we take for granted how easily artists blend different genres. It’s a generally acceptedfact that metal kids listen to hardcore punk and hardcore punk kids listen to metal, but it wasn’talways like that. As a matter of fact, the two scenes often times stood in stark contrast to each other. In this episode, my co-host Randy Larsen and I will delve into the Crossover movement, whichwas the melding of thrash metal and hardcore, an innovation that was necessary for the advancementof both musical genres. We will be discussing several bands and their contributions; however, this is not meant to be adefinitive list, so excuse us if we leave off one of your favorite bands.Intro:"March of the S.O.D." - S.O.D."I Shot Reagan" - Suicidal Tendencies"Ground Zero Brooklyn" - Carnivore"Crab Society North Demo" - S.O.D.Outro: "Happily Ever After" - Corrosion of Conformity See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

This is the first episode of the TOPIC series that Randy Larsen and I are going to do from time to time. It started out with our playlist episodes and evolved into this more formatted type of setup. Both of us were heavily influenced by the 90's record label Amphetamine Reptile. Bands like Helmet and Today is the Day Started out there and the vibe established my the label gave rise to some killer bands that pretty much existed in obscurity. In between talking to Randy at the beginning and end we talk to Al Oimet of The Pist, M-13 and The Deacons (and various other projects) about growing up a punk in CT who was highly influenced by David Bowie and the upcoming Pist gigs.

I got together with my old friend Randy Larsen (Cable, Empty Flowers) to check out the "Black Flag" show that happened here in Brooklyn at the Warsaw Club as part of the Northside Music Fest. I know that I've been obsessed with this for the last few episodes, but this will probably be the final transmission on this topic. It's time to move on to other things and just let it go. Greg Ginn is a genius; his guitar playing will destroy you however, I think he needs to leave Black Flag in the past.
