The potential of NFTs to save musicians was always pretty tenuous, and the more excitable proponents of the whole thing always sounded a bit too much like they were either trying to convince themselves about the whole, or maybe that they were just scamming. Our guest this week is deep in the world of digital art, but doesn't make any bold claims to be even linking it in much of a way to his first area of creative interest which was of course music.Agoria is an important name in the history of French dance music, with a long career releasing records on the full spectrum of labels, throwing parties (including the key festival Nuits Sonores), and DJing all over the world. He's also a thoroughly nice chap who I've had the pleasuring of hanging out with a playing a good few b2b sets with over the years. We discuss the whole web3 thing, his involvement in the digital art scene more generally, the Paris olympics, meeting President Macron, the Presidential art collection, the future of dance music, and a lot more besides.I loved this conversation and you're going to too!If you're into what we're doing here on the pod then you can support the show on Patreon! #Grandpa Bills Grunts & Groanswith Guest Michael Hobson President of Aquene Springs About Michael Frequency - /ˈfrēkwənsē/ : the rate at which a vibration occurs that constitutes a wave, either in a material (as in sound waves), or in an electromagnetic field (as in radio waves and light). Aquene Springs founder, Michael Hobson has spent his life studying frequencies. First as a mathematician, then as an econometrics professor and corporate business consultant, through his several businesses in the music industry at the forefront of both the vinyl movement, with Classic Records, and live recording industries, with TheMusic.com,, Michael's interest in frequencies eventually brought him to water. He became fascinated with water and started a 10+year deep dive into understanding it in all its capabilities. After years of studying water, water structure and water frequencies, deepening his understanding of this under-appreciated molecule that appears to be the foundation of all Life on Earth, Michael heard about a special water that came from a source in a remote part of Idaho. Thorough a series of coincidences, he found his way to the spring where pristine water, that tastes like no other, finds its way to the Earth's surface at 139 degrees Fahrenheit and naturally comes out of the ground at 80 gallons/minute. It was here, in this special place, known for centuries to Native Americans as Crystal Spring, that it became clear to Michael that he would have a role in helping to bring this water to the public. Hobson sees frequencies as a way for humanity to connect, communicate and heal and knows water plays an important role in life, longevity, health and personal growth. David Crosby was famous for nearly 60 years, a celebrity sustained by records, tours, brushes with the law and serial disagreements with old pals and collaborators (he was the very definition of a non-team player). We look back fondly at various stops along the way - his upscale background, his role in the Byrds, his ‘Will Scarlet in Robin Hood' haircut and unsexy cape ensemble, CS&N as the soundtrack to a West Coast American fantasy, the time the Beatles played him the unreleased A Day In The Life, a public fallout with Neil Young and a tuxedoed Graham Nash's last show with the Hollies with the piss-taking Crosby in the dressing-room. Plus “It's Not You It's Me” – classic records that leave us cold: fight-starting suggestions include albums by Patti Smith (“that bawling harridan with her jive muse”), Nirvana, Love, Neil Young, Cat Stevens, Arctic Monkeys and the Beatles. Thanks for tuning in to the first episode of Road to Ruin, the new show featuring me and Randy Larsen. For those of you who listened to Meta Matters, you will recognize us as the Classic Records team. We’ll be doing these shows every month, covering of different records and music-related topics. This first episode can be an “Origin” story where we talk about how we met, some cool memories and how we both got onto this Road to Ruin. Intro: “Life of Crime” – Laughing Hyenas Outro: “Me and Bobby McGee” – Kris Kristofferson
Way back on our first episode, Randy and I, kicked things off with a discussion of Killers, Maiden's swansong record with Paul Di'Anno. To close the circle, we're covering the classic record Number of the Beast, the record that introduced the world to Bruce Dickinson and propelled Iron Maiden into mega-stardom.Intro: "Number of the Beast"Outro: "Hallowed Be Thy Name" See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Randy Larsen joins us this week for the first Classic Records episode of the year. "Dirt" was the Alice in Chains record that made the biggest impact both commercially and creatively. Check out what we have to say about it.Intro: "Them Bones"Outro: "Would" See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Last year we picked 5 albums each at random from Garry Mulholland's fantastic book 'Fear of Music: The Greatest 261 Albums Since Punk and Disco'. On this episode we report back with our thoughts on each album and how we found the listening experience. The list of albums: Beastie Boys - License to Ill Echo and the Bunnymen - Heaven Up Here Johnny Cash - America lll The Clash - Combat Rock Fugazi - Fugazi Earth, Wind & Fire - Best of, Vol. 1 The Modern Lovers - The Modern Lovers Kelis - Kaleidoscope The La's - The La's Stephen Malkmus - Stephen Malkmus Listen to a playlist of tracks from each album on Spotify Connect with us: Instagram @twotrackmindpod / @runwithed / @liamtoms Twitter @twotrackmindpod / @runwithed / @liamtoms
Rock journalist and musician J Bennet returns to dive into the classic hard rock album "High 'n' Dry".Intro: "High 'n' Dry"Outro: "Bringin' on the Heartbreak" See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
If you listen to Metal Matters, the podcast I host for Gimme Metal, you probably heard the Classic Records episode I did for Circus of Power's LP "Vices" a few weeks ago. I cut in excerpts from a longer interview with Al Mitchell, the singer and front man of the band to add some color to the narrative of the band. Our talk was so cool that I wanted to present the whole thing to you guys. A few weeks have gone by since the Metal Matters thing, so I figured it's a good time to drop this. Intro: "Save the American Wolf" Outro: "In the Wind"
Me and Randy are back this week with another classic records episode. This one is for the New York / New Jersey peeps in particular. Circus or Power released their seminal record Vices back in 1990. It stands apart with its stories of down-and-out loners, journeys through the seedy underbelly of New York City, punk-infused blues riffs and a lyrical darkness calls to mind the best of Leadbelly, Howlin’ Wolf and Roy Orbison. Intro: “Vices”Outro: “In the Wind” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Jackie Smit, host of the Into the Necrosphere, joins us for a classic records episode. We dive into Gorgoroth’s black metal masterpiece Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam.Intro: “Exit”Outro: “Carving a Giant” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Rock music scribe J Bennet is back this week for our second installment of AC/DC classic records. After losing Bon Scott, the band recruits Brian Johnson to pick up the vocal duties and records Back in Black which would become one of the biggest selling rock albums in history.Intro: “Hell’s Bells”Outro: “Shoot to Thrill” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Rock scribe J Bennet joins us this week for an AC/DC classic records two-parter. Highway to Hell was the record that set AC/DC up for mega stardom, combining the bands no-frills, hard-rocking attitude with the production mastery of Mutt Lange. J and I discuss one of the greatest rock albums ever made and the tragic demise of the AC/DC’s legendary frontman Bon Scott.Intro: “Highway to Hell”Outro: “If You Want Blood (You Got It)” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Randy and I are back this week for another classic records episode. This week, we cove Eyehategod’s second LP “Take as Needed for Pain”. If you dig this, check out the episode with Mike IX from a few weeks ago.Intro: “Take as Needed for Pain”Outro: “Shop Lift” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Randy Larsen is back for another Classic Records episode. This week we talk about one of the most important hardcore records of the 90’s. If you’re a fan of Dillinger Escape Plan, you have to be a fan of Deadguy, a seminal band that crossed blistering hardcore with metal and the chaotic elements of bands like Unsane and Today is the Day. Their sole LP “Fixation on a Coworker” stands as a truly influential record to emerge from the evolving hardcore scene of the 90’s.Intro: “Doom Patrol”Outro: “Apparatus” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Along with Neurosis and Eyehategod, Buzzoven can be considered one of the architects of the style of extreme music that some people will refer to as “sludge.” Back in the early 90’s, it was a novel move to combine the heaviness of Black Sabbath with the intensity of Black Flag creating an unsettling mixture of pure emotion. Buzzoven were one of the more threatening, unpredictable bands of the era and “Sore,” at least in our opinion, is possibly their defining record.Intro: “Sore”Outro: “Done” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
As we promised, J Bennett and I deliver the second installment of our Van Halen Classic Records series. This week, we dive deep into Fair Warning, somewhat of a dark horse of a record. You won’t find any hits on this record, instead you get a somewhat darker and more sinister reflection of one of the most successful rock bands in the history of Rock ‘n’ Roll.Intro: “Sinner’s Swing!”Outro: “Hear About It Later” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
This week, rock journalist and musician, J Bennet join us for part 1 of our Van Halen Classic Record Series. Edward Van Halen, along with Jimi Hendrix and Tony Iommi, is one of the true innovators of hard rock, heavy metal guitarists and has influenced a legion of players across all genres of extreme music.Van Halen’s debut was like a shot heard around the world, making a statement that the bar had been raised. The band was an unstoppable live juggernaut, blowing away some of the most respected bands of the era and rose to mega-stardom with one of the most successful debut albums in rock history.J and I dive into the band and the debut this monolithic debut album. Stay tuned for the Fair Warning Episode, part 2 in the Van Halen Series.Intro: “Runnin’ with the Devil”Outro: “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Randy and I dive into a record that has a deep personal connection to both of us. Today is the Day is a band that has always represented total commitment to singular vision despite all obstacles and setbacks. Steve Austin, the man behind Today is the Day is a true visionary, and Willpower is a testament to his vision. Intro: “Willpower”Outro: “Simple Touch” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
My good friend Mike Scondotto joins us this week to discuss the classic record “Slow, Deep and Hard” by Brooklyn metal heroes Type O Negative. Mike has been a fixture in the New York hardcore and metal scene for the past few decades and is the singer of The Last Stand and Inhuman. Additionally, Mike and I co-host the horror podcast Necromaniacs available on all streaming platforms (just like Metal Matters).Intro: “Xero Tolerance”Outro: “Unsuccessfully Coping with the Beauty of Infidelity" See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Journalist, author and Gimme Radio DJ Jon Weiderhorn joins us this week for a Classic Records Episode. This time around, we have our sites set on “Hell Bent for Leather” by Judas Priest. Check out Jon’s new book “Raising Hell” available from Diversion Books also be sure to listen to his show “Metalography” only on Gimme Radio, the best metal community on the web!Intro: “Hell Bent for Leather”Outro: “Delivering the Goods” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In a way, this is part two of last week’s “Master of Reality” episode, sort of the spiritual successor. Ozzy started the 80’s as a man without a country so to speak. He was out of Sabbath and actually thought that his career might be over. Luckily, it was just the beginning for him.Randy and I dive into Ozzy’s debut record “Blizzard of Ozz” another crucial record to the world of heavy metal and extreme musicINTRO: “Mr. Crowley” OUTRO: “No Bone Movies” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
From here on out, we’ll be back on the weekly schedule so to kick it off, the next two episodes are related. This week Randy and I will dive into Black Sabbath’s “Master of Reality” one of extreme music’s most important records, where the roots of multiple genres can be found. Next week, we branch off and address the Ozzy factor with “The Blizzard of Ozz.” Be sure to catch both action-packed episodes.INTRO: “Children of the Grave” OUTRO: “Lord of this World” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
This episode is dedicated to the memory of Martin Eric Ain, co-founder of Celtic Frost and Hellhammer. Together, with Tom Gabriel Fischer, they crafted Morbid Tales, one of the most influential records on extreme music in the 20th century. The reach of this classic record is deep and traces of its essence can be found in diverse bands such as Winter, Goatwhore, Sheer Terror and High on Fire.Intro: “Human”Outro: ”Dethroned Emperor” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Jonah Jenkins, the former singer of Only Living Witness and the current singer of Northern Skulls, joins us this week to talk about the classic record “Prone Mortal Form.” Only Living Witness was a groundbreaking band in New England during the later 80’s and early 90’s blending a strong sense of melody into the hardcore scene. Jonah continues to remain active with his current band Northern Skulls.Intro: “Prone Mortal Form”Outro: “Twitching Tongues” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
This was an excuse to talk to my dear friend Ralph Schmidt from the band Ultha, disguised as a “Classic Records” episode. It’s good thing that we picked Breach’s masterpiece “Kollapse” as our subject to discuss. Sweden’s Breach influenced a host of bands that you probably listen to. Unfortunately, they remained relatively unknown here in the States. If it wasn’t for Ralph, I probably would never had heard them.Intro: “Alarma”Outro: “Old Ass Player” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
We’re trying out a new idea this week with Point of Entry, a recurring show where we discuss the records that hooked us into the world of metal and extreme music. Andy Larsen, my cohost on the Classic Records episodes joins me as we dive into our murky past and talk about some pivotal records and turning points in our lives.Intro: “God of Thunder” KissOutro: “Starbreaker” Judas Priest See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
If you checked out last week’s episode is Harley Flanagan, the founder of NYHC Legends, Cro Mags, it makes a lot of sense that we would follow up with out reflections on their two classic records, “Age of Quarrel” and “ Best Wishes”. Both of these records paint a portrait an accurate picture of the band during years of volatility and struggle.Intro: “World Peace”Interlude: “We Gotta Know”Outro: “The Only One” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In a way, this is a continuation of the Black Flag “In My Head” episode because it is our opinion that much of the groundwork for the Rollins Band may have been laid down during the final tour for that record. Randy and I discuss that in detail in this episode. We dive deep into “Hard Volume, the second full-length record by the Rollins Band. There aren’t any hits on this one, but this record captures the band at it’s most experimental, raw and intense.Intro: “I Feel Like This”Outro: “Turned Inside Out” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
All Hell Breaks loose when Fellow Gimme Radio DJ Diane Farris joins me for another “Classic Records” episode. This week, we dive deep into one of our mutually favorite records, “Walk Among Us” by the Misfits, a record that we take for granted as being a seminal record but back in the 80’s, the band was somewhat of an anomaly. Diane and I discuss all of that, as well as our own experiences with the band and this amazing punk record.Intro: “All Hell Breaks Loose”Outro: “20 Eyes” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
This episode started out as a “Classic Records” episode for the Lurker of Chalice LP but turned into an appreciation of Jef Whitehead, also known as Wrest. There are many one-man black metal projects of merit, but Leviathan / Lurker of Chalice is in our opinion, the deepest, darkest and most interesting. There information available on Whitehead is economical, very little more than a few interviews; the Noisey mini-documentary on one-man black metal features him but he appears to be private and a man of few words. Randy and I express our impressions of the music with a sense of awe that approaches reverence.Intro: “Granite”Outro: “6116” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Randy and I tackle Poison Idea’s classic record “Feel the Darkness” in this episode. I have to admit, when I was a kid back in the 80’s, I slept on Poison Idea until 1990, when this record dropped. The record cover looked intense, nihistic, it led me to believe that the people that made this kind of music were living on the edge of the American Nightmare. From the opening track, “Plastic Bomb” the record stormed with wild turbulence painting a picture of broken hope, darkness and desperation.Intro: “Plastic Bomb”Outro: “Just to Get Away” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Author / Journalist / Musician Anthony Pappalardo returns to discuss Black Flag’s sixth and final album “In My Head.” Everyone will agree that Black Flag is an icon, their relentless work ethic, stark imagery and the raw-nerve intensity of their music has carved a permanent channel into the popular music and popular culture.Released in 1985, “In My Head” is often dismissed by a lot of fans but in our opinion, it is as crucial an entry into their catalog as “Damaged” and “Slip It In.” Despite the fact that it was the band’s swansong, it sounds like a band that was about to expand into a brand new direction.Intro: “Paralyzed”Outro: “Black Love” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
My good friend, music journalist and fellow musician, J. Bennett returns to discuss the iconic death metal classic “Slaughter of the Soul” by At the Gates. If you’ve been listening to this podcast for a while, you will notice that we typically go for the more left-of-center classics, but this one is undeniably an influential record that helped define the “Gothenburg sound” of the mid-90’s as well as providing inspiration for a whole legion of bands.J's work has appeared in Decibel, Revolver, Terrorizer and pretty much everywhere you can read about extreme music. He also wrote the "Slaughter of the Soul" entry into Decibel's Hall of Fame.Intro: “Blinded by Fear”Outro: “Suicide Nation” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
My old friend, rock music scribe and fellow musician J. Bennet joins us for a Classic Records Episode this week. Aside from reading J’s work in numerous music-related outlets such as Decibel, Revolver, Noisey and others, he is a member of Mustard Gas and Roses, Ides of Gemini and Black Mare. Guns n’ Roses’ debut album “Appetite for Destruction” has without a doubt earned its place in the pantheon of hard rock music. We both share some stories about our experiences with the record and how it crushed some of their “Hair Metal” contemporaries.Intro: “It’s So Easy”Outro: “Paradise City” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Fellow Gimme Radio DJ Diane Farris joins us to talk about “Phobos” the 9th studio album by the Canadian metal band Voivod. You can catch Diane’s show “Lifer” on Gimme Radio.I’ve always been fascinated by Voivod, a band that has been grinding away since the early 80’s. The emerged during the thrash / speed metal heyday along with Slayer, Metallica, Razor and Testament. In my opinion, they were always the more eccentric bands of that crop, evolving and changing as the years went on.I think Diane and I agree that “Phobos” is the most unique record from a truly unique band.Intro: “Quantum”Outro: “Phobos” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Author / musician Anthony Pappalardo of Adult Inc. joins us this week for a Classic Records episode. Pappalardo has written about everything from skateboarding to hardcore music to urban lifestyle and to date has published two books Live…Suburbia and Radio Silence: A Visual History of American Hardcore. If you’ve been paying attention for the last few months, you realize that we don’t stick to the obvious, instead we set our sights on the records that resonate with us and maybe have a little more personal impact. With that said, this week’s classic record is Metallica’s “Garage Days Revisited” their 1987 EP of covers that opened up entire vistas of new musical possibilities.Intro: “The Small Hours” (Killing Joke)Outro: “The Wait” (Killing Joke) See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
The legendary Sick of It All have been deploying their own brand of New York Hardcore since 1986. Founded in Queens, NY by brothers Lou and Pete Koller, the band has employed the blue-collar work ethic and carved out their own channel not only in the hardcore underground, but also put their mark on the mainstream music world with 1994’s Scratch the Surface. For this episode of classic records, I teamed up with NYHC scribe and former music industry exec Howie Abrams. What started out as a discussion about Scratch the Surface, quickly expanded into a recollection of the band’s formation and the early days of New York Hardcore.Intro: “Scratch the Surface”Outro: “It’s Clobbering Time” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
When you think of the “Seattle Grunge” scene from the early 90’s, you think of the usual suspects: Soundgarden, Nirvana, Pearl Jam and maybe Alice in Chains. The term grunge was a term coined by generally unimaginative press people and so-called pundits. In the early days, it was just a collection of guys playing in bands that dug classic rock, punk and heavy metal and the weird stew they concocted became known as grunge. One of the unsung heroes of this was Skin Yard, a band that influenced and even shared members with many of above-mentioned bands. Formed by produced Jack Endino, C/Z Records main man Daniel House and vocalist Ben McMillan in 1985, it is our opinion that they provided the template for what the dreary Seattle sound would become. We’re going to talk about Hallowed Ground, which is largely considered their crowning achievement.Intro: “In the Blackhouse”Outro: “Wither” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Black Sabbath are possibly the most important band in the history of heavy metal and extreme music. All of our favorite bands owe a least a little bit to Sabbath. The first four records are untouchable in most opinions. With that said, Randy and I are going to showcase 1980”s Heaven and Hell as a Classic Record. It was the first record to feature Ronnie James Dio and is a huge departure from the work they were doing in the seventies, additionally, the story surrounding the record is very interesting.Intro: “Neon Nights”Outro: “Heaven and Hell” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
How many times does a debut record smash you across the face like “Streetcleaner” by Godflesh?Earache Records delivered this monument to anguish, desolation and bleakness on November 13, 1989.At the time, Earache was putting out seminal records that would define extreme music and Godfleshstands apart combining machine like rhythms with throbbing bass, discordant guitar work and torturedvocals creating a soundtrack for the invasion of Hell.Intro: "Like Rats" - Godflesh"Merciless" - The Fall of Because"Why Hide" - Swans"She Watch Channel Zero" - Public EnemyOutro:"Dead Head" - Godflesh See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Neurosis is a band that transcends classification; their influence can be felt across most genres ofextreme music. Formed in 1985 by Scott Kelly, Dave Edwardson and Jason Roeder, their early soundwas based in the hardcore punk style of Amebix. Discharge, Crass and other UK punks. StevenVon Till Joined the band in 1989 and Noah Landis replaced their original synth player, Simon McIlroyin 1995 which completed the modern lineup of the band.Released on April 23, 1996 on Relapse Records, “Through Silver in Blood” was the manifestation ofall of the strife and turmoil that the band members have been going through. The result was a monolithicepic drawing influence from a myriad of sources such as Black Sabbath, Swans, Black Flag and alethal dose of raw emotion.Intro: “Eye”Outro : “Locust Star” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

SUPER SPECIAL GUEST PIKE! The guys talk a bout touring, falling asleep at the wheel, butt sex, and cooking!
Marnie Stern is an obscenely talented musician. That's probably something we should mention from the get go. Her guitar playing and songwriting nous is remarkable, and the result of her skill is four very good albums, most of which could be considered for out discography. However, Mark makes a case for her third self titled album as being the one which should be added to our canon of classic albums. Weaver enthusiastically agrees, whilst Chris gives some thoughts on why her second and fourth albums might be more worthy additions to the Unsung Discography of Classic Records than this. What do you think? Is Marnie Stern's self titled third album her definitive work, or do you think perhaps another record of hers should be considered? Vote on our Facebook page below.

ZDS https://www.facebook.com/zombiedisco Barely into his 30s, ZDS - aka London DJ and producer Nat Self - may not yet have the weathered features of a house music elder statesman but his musical CV already reads that way. Leading light in, and most successful export of, East London's post-millennial club scene, check. Resident of Panorama Bar when it was just a twinkle in most techno tourist's eyes, check. Collaborator with Chicago booty bass don DJ Funk and UK soul legend Omar on last year's rocking debut album 'Brains' (released by Made to Play), check. Festival slots everywhere from LA’s HARD Summer to Ukraine super festival Kazantip, check, check, check. It's no puzzle then why Classic Records, brainchild of definite house elder statesmen Luke Solomon and Derrick Carter, chose him to mix and re-edit their back catalogue for the bumping jackathon that was 'Classic Through the Eyes of: Zombie Disco Squad' (Nat's previous moniker) released to critical acclaim earlier this year. With huge recent hits for the likes of Suara and Hive Audio, ZDS now returns to dirtybird, the San Fran crew he's repped for since 2009. Slipping effortlessly from the wonked out ‘Hands’ to the low and dirty ‘Drop’, via the Teutonic techno train of ‘Bang Ze Box’, ZDS isn't just ticking all the right boxes… he's banging them too.
