After losing 6-0 to the Winnipeg Jets, the Oilersnation Radio gang (Tyler, Liam, Rick and Dan) took a look back at what went wrong for the Copper and Blue in that home opener. That then bled into today's delicious debate: What concerned you the most about that opening loss? From there, they chatted a little about the news that Raphael Lavoie was claimed by the Vegas Golden Knights. The Lavoie saga has gone on all week with the former second round pick going on waivers three times. We're back to two episodes of Oilersnation Radio per week, and we're kicking off the regular season schedule with our annual predictions episode to go over how we think the next six months will play out.We kicked off the Tuesday episode of ONR by reviewing the news since Friday's episode. We started with Raphael Lavoie being claimed by the Vegas Golden Knights, who then put him back on waivers 24 hours later. This unique situation actually allows Edmonton to bring Lavoie back, provided that no one lower in the priority list also puts in a claim. The boys also walked through the salary cap implications of these moves, even though no one understood what was happening.Looking ahead at the 2024-25 season, the boys offered their boldest predictions for the upcoming campaign, and there's little doubt everyone is drinking the Kool-Aid. From predicting McDavid's point production to team totals to Stuart Skinner's workload between the pipes, the boys were all over the map with their numbers. There's no better way to spend a Wednesday night than with a cold beer and a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never, amirite? This week, I talked about the Edmonton heat wave, brought you up to date on all of the Oilers news, and took your voicemails to work through whatever is on your mind.Kicking off this week's podcast, I got started with a little bit of music talk. Not only did I watch and love the new Nickelback documentary that's up on Netflix, but I also premiered a brand new BLTN original song that made me laugh out loud. I always get excited any time new music comes into the podcast, and this week's tune was no exception. Simply amazing.Turning the show back to the Oilers, I walked through the little bits of news that have come out over the last week, including Matt Savoie appearing at development camp, Leon Draisaitl's agent feeling confident a deal will get done, and Raphael Lavoie signing a fresh contract to stay in Edmonton. At this time of the year, there's never much going on, but that doesn't mean there wasn't plenty to talk about when it comes to the Oilers.Lastly, I wrapped up this week's show with a pair of guest RSBs and capped off the pod with another round of voicemails ranging from summer in Edmonton, Oilers talk, Jeff Jackson, and everything in between. Once again, this podcast really is one of my favourite parts of the week, and I'm so very grateful for the levels of participation by the wonderful BLTN community that keeps moving. The Kris Knoblauch era starts with a bang as the Edmonton Oilers defeat the New York Islanders 4-1. The Oilers got big contributions from their top guns, with Leon Draisaitl leading the charge with a goal and three assists. Additionally, Connor McDavid ended his goalless drought with his third of the year. Zach Hyman and Evander Kane each grabbed a goal in the win, too. The start was less than ideal for Edmonton, who allowed the Islanders to score 40 seconds into the first period. From then on, Stuart Skinner was able to settle into his crease, stopping the next 31 shots. Skinner has now had back-to-back games of allowing one goal and has a save percentage of over 0.940. One unfortunate incident that happened last night was Dylan Holloway's injury. Holloway didn't return to the game following the crash into the boards, and his status for future games is still questionable. Who should be stepping into his role on the third line in his absence? Tyler Yaremchuk and Liam Horrobin will dig into everything that happened last night down at Rogers Place. Even with the two points in the bag, there was still plenty to talk about as the Oilers looked to get back on a straighter path under their new head coach. Joining Tyler and Liam on the show is Bruce Curlock. With Bruce, the three of them will discuss what a Knoblauch team could look like in the coming weeks. They will also talk about the play of Raphael Lavoie and James Hamblin and who could come up to replace Holloway. A fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never can only mean Wednesday afternoon and that you're on the back half of your work week. Are you excited? I'm excited.Kicking off this week's BLTN, I started with a recap of a very busy week for myself and the Nation. From the TOOL concert on Wednesday night to the Oilers' disaster in Minnesota on Friday to having the pendulum swing back the other way with a BOA win in the Heritage Classic, the emotional rollercoaster that is being an Edmonton fan never ends around here. Needless to say, having the boys kick off their season as poorly as they did was a major cause for concern, but it was equally fascinating to see how quickly the vibes changed with a win over the Calgary Flames. With the recap of my week out of the way, I dug into what's been a pretty busy week for the Oilers after the team waived Adam Erne and replaced him with a freshly signed Sam Gagner. For some fans, Gagner returning for a third of duty was precisely what they were looking for, while others hoped that Raphael Lavoie would finally get a crack at the NHL. How will it work out? Only time will tell. The Edmonton Oilers did not disappoint at the Heritage Classic, coming away with a 5-2 victory over their provincial rivals, the Calgary Flames. Right from the opening puck drop, the Oilers were ready to go. Brett Kulak got the scoring going within the first five minutes with his first of the season. Not long after, Zach Hyman joined in on the scoring after the Oilers had just killed a 5-on-3 penalty. Nazem Kadri pulled the Flames within one, but Evan Bouchard responded before the end of the first to restore the Oilers two-goal cushion. Calgary pushed back in the second period, scoring the only goal coming from AJ Greer; however, two goals in the third period helped the Oilers get their second win of the season. Vincent Desharnais scored the insurance goal, which was his first career goal. Tyler Yaremchuk and Liam Horrobin will review everything that went down at Commonwealth Stadium last night. The NHL season kicks off tonight, and the Oilers launch tomorrow, which meant we had a lot to talk about on the Tuesday episode of Oilersnation Radio.Kicking off the Tuesday episode, we got started with a conversation about the hilarious overreaction that happened on the weekend when the Oilers chose to waive Raphael Lavoie due to salary cap constraints. Before finding out that Lavoie was waived (and cleared) due to the cap, Oilers Twitter was raging mad about asset mismanagement, and it was fascinating to watch even though nothing had even happened yet. From there, we offered up our season predictions ahead of the 2023-24 NHL season as the Edmonton Oilers get set to kick off their campaign tomorrow night against the Vancouver Canucks. Changing gears, we looked ahead at the season opener against the Canucks and how the Oilers still have a few question marks ahead of tomorrow's game. Will Ekholm play? Will Kulak play? Lastly, we wrapped up the Tuesday episode of the podcast with a new segment from Baggedmilk, another round of Word Association and a quick rant from Tyler about the schedule for the start of the season. Furthermore, Hutton will join in with his hot takes for the upcoming season. Finally, Ken Holland made his final roster moves over the weekend, and people were not happy. The Edmonton Oilers took it to the Calgary Flames last night, defeating them 7-2 at Rogers Place. Granted, it was a weakened Calgary team going up against an Oilers roster close to full strength. Edmonton got goal contributions from Connor Brown twice, Lane Pederson, Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Evander Kane, and Raphael Lavoie. Between the pipes, Stuart Skinner stopped 18 of 20 shots in his three appearances of the exhibition season. The biggest storyline coming out of the game was the play of Raphael Lavoie. Last night was hands down his best of the pre-season, which should help him crack the opening night roster. Liam Horrobin was at the game, so he will break down what he saw from the Oilers former second-round pick. Continuing with the show, Frank Seravalli from Daily Faceoff joins Tyler Yaremchuk and Liam for his weekly hit. Yesterday, Frank broke the news on his Twitter about the salary cap increase following the board of governors meetings. Also coming from those meetings was the potential addition of more expansion teams joining the NHL, with cities like Houston, Quebec City and Atlanta all being name-dropped. On top of that, Frank will give us the latest updates from around the NHL and your Edmonton Oilers, including the health of Mattias Ekholm and Ryan McLeod.Yesterday afternoon, the Toronto Blue Jays season ended after losing two straight games to the Minnesota Twins—a disappointing end to an underwhelming season. Tyler will give his thoughts on the series and the future for the Blue Jays players and its management team. The boys are back in town, which meant there was plenty to talk about on this week's episode of Oilersnation Radio.Kicking off this week's podcast, we got started with a delicious debate about who will grab the final roster spot with the Oilers by the time training camp is all said and done. With Lane Pederson, Sam Gagner, and Raphael Lavoie all fighting for the final roster spot, it will be very interesting to see how that battle shakes out. Looking at the captain's skates that are happening at Rogers Place, we talked about how it's great to see the team getting to town so early and hitting the ice with purpose. While we always see teams showing up for optional skates every summer, this year just feels different because of the way the last season ended. We also covered the Nail Yakupov interview from Dropping the Gloves that happened this past week, and how it offered an interesting look behind the scenes at what was going on while he was hear. Needless to say, Yak didn't have much fun in Edmonton and that was a real bummer given how excited we all were to have him. I'm a day late with the podcast but the good news is that I titled my show appropriately for such delays.Kicking off the podcast, I got started with an ode to summer in Edmonton. Personally, I don't think there's anywhere I would rather be than here when the sun is out, the days are long, and the list of things to do grows by the day. This past week was another busy one for your boy as I took in yet another Riverhawks game on Tuesday night before hitting up the Volbeat concert at Rogers Place last night. When the season ended, I challenged myself to do more things around the city and I think I've done a pretty good job of getting that done so far. Changing gears, the only Oilers news stories worth talking about this week were Raphael Lavoie accepting his qualifying offer and Jeremy Coupal parting ways with the organization after basically becoming a folk hero around here. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with a fresh round of voicemails to get your take on the BLTN presidential election and what's been going on over the last week.
