In this episode, John and Kelly talk about the concept of listening. The art of understanding before making the effort to be understood. Recently John interviewed the athletic director at the University of Texas for his weekly program for the 18 head coaches in the athletic department. The athletic director's big message was that he was refining the art of really listening. It's interesting because as the athletic director, usually he's in the position of telling people what to do. But he has realized that to get his message across, he's got to convey to his audience that he listens to them. And that they feel heard. Then John posed the question to Kelly. She in a similar position to the athletic director. As the CEO of her company, she's got a message to convey. But she also has to listen. Kelly had some great insights on this. She says it's so important to make people feel seen and understood. Once that happens, they listen to her message. And to conclude the episode John and Kelly talk about how the think it be it 12 minute day methodology causes them to be better listeners. To try to understand before we try to be understood. About the Hosts:John MitchellJohn's story is pretty amazing. After spending 20 years as an entrepreneur, John was 50 years old but wasn't as successful as he thought he should be. To rectify that, he decided to find the “top book in the world” on SUCCESS and apply that book literally Word for Word to his life. That Book is Think & Grow Rich. The book says there's a SECRET for success, but the author only gives you half the secret. John figured out the full secret and a 12 minute a day technique to apply it.When John applied his 12 minute a day technique to his life, he saw his yearly income go to over $5 million a year, after 20 years of $200k - 300k per year. The 25 times increase happened because John LEVERAGED himself by applying science to his life. His daily technique works because it focuses you ONLY on what moves the needle, triples your discipline, and consistently generates new business ideas every week. This happens because of 3 key aspects of the leveraging process.John's technique was profiled on the cover of Time Magazine. He teaches it at the University of Texas' McCombs School of Business, which is one the TOP 5 business schools in the country. He is also the “mental coach” for the head athletic coaches at the University of Texas as well.Reach out to John at john@thinkitbeit.comLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-mitchell-76483654/Kelly HatfieldKelly Hatfield is an entrepreneur at heart. Did he take part in the hit on Mob boss Paul Castellano? Why did he plan to murder John Gotti Jr, the best man in his wedding? Who was the first man he killed? Do you sleep at night? Of the 30 Million dollars he was worth, how much does he have left? What was it like when the FBI revealed, your crew was ratting you out? You claim to have been friends with cartel members and were a major drug dealer, what is it like to know an illegal drug smuggled through Mexico killed your daughter? This touching, heartfelt song was written 20 years ago by my father, Craig Riesen, for thepassing of his mother (my grandmother). I recall its conception vividly. My father had writtena letter saying many of the things he'd wished to say to her (as we knew she was dying fromcancer), and soon after she passed away. He was heartbroken.I remember him sitting in the living room, with tears rolling down his face as he began to playthis simple, sweet, and longing melody. Soon, words came flowing out with the tune, and thissong was created. At the time, I could not sing. I was still an avid baseball player, but as theyears passed and my vocal talents became apparent the song was passed from my father tome.I get chills to this day, recalling how it felt to say goodbye with song. Needless to say,You're The Best; has been an important part of my life for many years, and I believe that itcan touch other people in the same way that it has touched my heart. We all haveexperienced loss or nostalgia for our loved ones, and this piece pulls at those strings.Originally composed for piano and voice, we have expanded the instrumentation to add soloviolin, electric bass, slight percussion, and synth to fill out the texture. It is a truly specialsong. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Today we have John Espey, Co-Founder and CEO of Levvel.  Levvel has started getting some much deserved press locally for the fast growth track they have burned over the last 5 years.  Recently John and I got together to discuss what’s most important for the Charlotte ecosystem: more entrepreneurs or more early stage money.  A heated debate ensued and I think we all know who won the argument.  Regardless, we had a really good lunch and a great discussion and I feel in love with the Levvel story.  As such, we agreed it would make great sense to continue the conversation on the podcast. In today’s podcast, we spent most of the time talking about Levvel because despite the fact that it’s getting covered in the press, I don’t think many people know much about the story.  This allowed us to fill up the time talking about the awesome ride Levvel has had since 2012 and 2013. What’s the back story to how Levvel got to where it is today? How did John and Chris Hart, his original co-founder, first meet? Levvel came out of Reward Summit.  How long did it take them to realize Reward Summit wasn’t going to be the home run they wanted it to be? How does the conversation to pivot out of Reward Summit and into consulting go? How has Levvel gone from 2 people (John and Chris) in 2013 to 170 employees in early 2018? It’s oftentimes talked about the vital role that ‘first customers’ play in a young company’s growth.  What were the first customers like for Levvel? What’s the benefit of being a mature entrepreneur, rather than a young, fresh recent college graduate? Hope you enjoyed today’s podcast with John Espey and you agree the story of Levvel and the impact it will have on the Charlotte economy over the course of the next 5, 10 years and beyond.  Next week, we tackle the discussion over what’s more important – more entrepreneurs or more early stage capital and the general Charlotte startup scene.  It’s a really good discussion and if you enjoyed John’s story today and I think you’ll enjoy the perspective he brings to the startup ecosystem discussion. John Lockley is one of the first white men in recent history to become a fully initiated sangoma (shaman) in the Xhosa lineage of South Africa. He trained under Zen master Su Bong from South Korea, and spent ten years in apprenticeship with Mum Ngwevu, a medicine woman from the Xhosa tribe. Recently John authored a book called Leopard Warrior, which is not only a great exploration of African Teachings on ancestry, instinct, and dreams, but a wonderful autobiographical account of his journey to becoming a Sangoma.  In this episode we’re discussing what it means to be fully human, how aliveness can be a messenger of our purpose, cultural appropriation, how to heal your ancestral lineage, the danger of avoiding the shadow, and aligning with your own wild nature. John shared with us that his reason for doing this work is to support people in becoming intoxicated with the sweet spirit of Mother Nature, and you can feel it in his words.  For more on John’s book Leopard Warrior, or for info on private sessions with him, visit johnlockley.com
