Whitt Callahan, a senior infielder at Spalding University in Louisville, Kentucky, joins Carter Mize on this episode of Tiger Alumni Player Spotlight.A Southern Indiana Rawlings Tigers alum, Callahan played four full summer seasons with the Tigers from 15U to 18U before beginning his collegiate career at Spalding.Reflecting on his time with the Tigers, Callahan shared: "I played all my high school summers with the Tigers. I'm really glad I did—it gave me the reps and exposure I needed to connect with college coaches and make my way into college baseball."Callahan's path to college baseball is unconventional in today's era of frequent transfers. Preparing for his final season of eligibility, he has stuck at Spalding University throughout his collegiate journey. The senior infielder found Spalding after the Southern Indiana Rawlings Tigers held a private workout for Spalding's coaching staff to see.“There were about 10 of us that attended this mini-camp that Spalding was high on. After that workout they brought me into the locker room and offered me a spot. In Division 3 there are no athletic scholarships so we didn't talk about any scholarship money obviously but I really liked the campus and facilities. It didn't take me long to commit at all.”The infielder has played in 75 games over 3 seasons for Spalding playing both third base, and second base.“I've played a large majority of third base here, with some spot starts at second base sprinkled in. If you hit, you play so I just play wherever they put me.” Winning is a hallmark of Spalding's baseball program. The NCAA Division III team has captured back-to-back SLIAC conference titles, with Callahan playing a key role in their success. In the 2024 SLIAC conference final, he hit a two-run home run, bringing his season total to a career."I never thought about transferring out of Spalding. I love it here—they push me every day, and I've become a much better player since I first arrived. Plus, we win all the time, which always makes it fun," he said.As Whitt enters his final season of eligibility, the Rawlings Tigers community wish him the best as he looks to cap his time at spalding off with an all-SLIAC caliber season.

This week, scholar Marilyn Sanders Mobley visits the AWM to discuss her book Toni Morrison and the Geopoetics of Place, Race, and Be/longing, which Henry Louis Gates, Jr. calls a "powerful and learned meditation, and one that deserves a prominent place in the field of Morrison studies." Mobley is joined in conversation by poet Parneshia Jones. This conversation originally took place October 15, 2024 and was recorded live at the American Writers Museum.AWM PODCAST NETWORK HOMEMore about Toni Morrison and the Geopoetics of Place, Race, and Be/longing:Toni Morrison's readers and critics typically focus more on the “what” than the “how” of her writing. In Toni Morrison and the Geopoetics of Place, Race, and Be/longing, Marilyn Sanders Mobley analyzes Morrison's expressed narrative intention of providing “spaces for the reader” to help us understand the narrative strategies in her work.Mobley's approach is as interdisciplinary, intersectional, nuanced, and complex as Morrison's. She combines textual analysis with a study of Morrison's cultural politics and narrative poetics and describes how Morrison engages with both history and the present political moment.Informed by research in geocriticism, spatial literary studies, African American literary studies, and Black feminist studies at the intersection of poetics and cultural politics, Mobley identifies four narrative strategies that illuminate how Morrison creates such spaces in her fiction; what these spaces say about her understanding of place, race, and belonging; and how they constitute a way to read and re-read her work.MARILYN SANDERS MOBLEY is Emerita Professor of English and African American Studies at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. She is the author of Folk Roots and Mythic Wings in Sarah Orne Jewett and Toni Morrison: The Cultural Function of Narrative and a spiritual memoir, The Strawberry Room, and Other Places Where a Woman Finds Herself.PARNESHIA JONES studied creative writing at Chicago State University and earned an MFA from Spalding University. Her first book Vessel (2015) was the winner of the Midwest Book Award and featured in O, The Oprah Magazine as one of 12 poetry books to savor for National Poetry Month. Her poems have been published in anthologies such as The Ringing Ear: Black Poets Lean South (2007), Poetry Speaks Who I Am (2010), and She Walks in Beauty: A Woman's Journey Through Poems (2011), edited by Caroline Kennedy. We've got a special Access Louisville Podcast this week — and it's special for a couple of reasons.First, two guests join us: Jerry Abramson, former mayor of Louisville and executive-in-residence at Spalding University; and Christina Lee Brown, philanthropist and namesake of the Christina Lee Brown Envirome Institute.Secondly, this week's show is special because it was recorded in front of a live audience at our offices in Downtown Louisville for the first time. The theme of the show was to look back at Louisville's milestones over the past 40 years. What did we get right? What surprised us? And what's on our wishlist for the future? The expansion of what is today known as Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport was one example that Abramson highlighted. But we also talked about more recent developments, such as the building of the River Ridge Commerce Center in Jeffersonville. As far as looking ahead at what the city needs in the future, Brown said the top thing on her wishlist is that everyone see the real value of health for our community.  The idea of creating jobs is solid, she said, but we need to ask ourselves about employees health too."How can we care for those employees psychological health in new kinds of ways? How can we take care of their air, water and soil in new kinds of ways," she asked.Abramson noted the importance of education and civic engagement. "This whole citizenship thing has sort of evaporated," Abramson said. "You need to engage — there's a responsibility. For democracy to work, you have to have an educated electorate." Those were just a few of our favorite takeaways. You can listen to the entire show in the player above and on popular podcast services, such as Apple Podcast, Spotify and Google Podcasts.Access Louisville is a weekly podcast from Louisville Business First.

With a passion for change agency and social justice, Dr. Sweeney has served as a special education teacher, English teacher and high school counselor in Jefferson County Public Schools (Louisville, KY). Sweeney holds a Master's in Teaching Special Education and Secondary English from Bellarmine University along with a Master's in Education for School Counseling and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of Louisville. In short, he's been in your shoes and knows the burdens you educators carry.  In this episode, we sat down with Damien to learn about what social-emotional learning is, why it matters, and why CTE classrooms are perfectly poised to help students find a place to belong and discover who they are. Damien also helped us discover how, as adults and educators, we can dive into our own journeys of social-emotional learning, and why educators need to fill up their cup before they can give to their students. If you or your students are feeling lost, overwhelmed, underappreciated, or misunderstood, this episode will bring insight and direction to help you pave a path forward.  Looking for the resources that Damien mentioned during this episode? Tori Murden McClure is no stranger to trail blazing.  Tori Murden McClure is the President of Spalding University in Louisville, Kentucky. Tori may be best known as the first woman and first American to row solo and unassisted across the Atlantic Ocean. Also she was the first woman and first American to travel over land to the geographic South Pole skiing 750-miles from the ice-shelf to the pole. Tori has worked as chaplain of Boston City Hospital, as policy assistant to the Mayor of Louisville, director of a shelter for homeless women, and has worked with the boxer and humanitarian Muhammad Ali.   Tori is an accomplished mountaineer and has completed major climbs on several continents. Tori is a graduate of Smith College. She holds a Masters in Divinity from Harvard Divinity School, a Juris Doctorate from the University of Louisville Brandeis School of Law, and a Masters of Fine Arts in Writing from Spalding University.   Though many titles fit — athlete, adventurer, chaplain, lawyer, university administrator — it's hard to put just one to her name. Her diverse career accomplishments include working as a chaplain at a Boston hospital, as the director of a Kentucky-based women's shelter, as a policy assistant in the Louisville Mayor's Office, and as the first full-time employee of the Muhammad Ali Center, a nonprofit cultural hub dedicated to celebrating the boxer.  Her memoir, “A Pearl in the Storm: How I Found My Heart in the Middle of the Ocean,” published in 2009, became the basis of the stage musical, “Row.” The musical premiered in the summer of 2021 at the prestigious Williamstown Theatre Festival in Massachusetts.  More on Tori: President Mclure of Spalding University   Womens History Month | Adventurer Tori Murden Mclure (video)   Womens History Month | Adventurer Tori Murden Mclure (article & photos)

I earned my English literature degree from the University of Georgia and my MFA in Creative Writing from Spalding University. I am a member of the Atlanta Writers Club, Georgia Romance Writers, and the Historical Novel Society. When I'm not writing, I'm reading, taking nature walks, and watching BBC television. My husband and I have two daughters, an adorable baby grandson, and a senior pup named Jackpot (so named because we hit the jackpot when he "rescued" us). My debut historical romance is a Southern Gothic paranormal romance DANGEROUS CONJURINGS (Soul Mate Publishing, April 2018), set in the aftermath of the American Civil War. WITH KISSES FROM CÉCILE, co-authored with Jan Agnello (Storyology Design and Publication, September 2019) was awarded the 2020 Georgia Independent Author of the Year Award in historical fiction and the Silver Award from Literary Titan. My debut sweet contemporary romance is A CHRISTMAS CANNOLI KISS, published by The Wild Rose Press. My historical time travel romance A TRYST IN PARIS is out on submission for publication. My work-in-progress is another sweet contemporary romance in which two hearts re-connect for a second chance when circumstances bring the former high school sweethearts back to their quaint and cozy hometown in the north Georgia mountains.annearmisteadauthor.comhttps://www.facebook.com/armisteadanne/https://twitter.com/ArmisteadAnnehttps://www.instagram.com/annearmisteadauthor/

Being there lead to being named by Kiarra Sylvester as one of “5 Black- Owned Wines You Should Be Sipping Right Now” published on Xonecole.com.The Indianapolis Recorder has followed our growth with two stories that show where we are now and where we began.Nicole's serious relationship with wine began in 2008, when she attended graduate school for her Master in Fine Arts (MFA) in Dramatic Writing at Spalding University, Low Residency MFA program, in Louisville, Kentucky. Surrounded by writers of all genres – playwrights, screenwriters, fiction, non-fiction, and poets they shared about their lives and craft while sipping wine. Over two years, they would continue to sip and share wines with each other. It was there her passion for wine knowledge and the spark for her future endeavor was ignited. In 2011, Nicole's good friend Mark gifted her a 32 bottle wine refrigerator as a housewarming gift. Of course, she had to fill it! She had a party asking people to bring wine. She gave them some parameters (She drank red almost exclusively at that time) and sent her friends on a wine hunt around town. It was an incredible success. Her guests got to try different wines and her wine chest was magically filled. Little did she know, she had just hosted her first home wine tasting. In December 2013, her friend Niesha invited her to a wine tasting. She accepted without hesitation. The hostess, Marla graciously welcomed Nicole into her home. The wine tasting was fantastic, conducted by an independent representative of a national home wine tasting company. Nicole tasted new wines, beginning a love affair with South African wines. The group of women she was introduced to that night bonded over their enjoyment of wine. They decided to host a party monthly at each other's homes. In January 2014, Nicole's friend had a wine tasting in her home. The time for the tasting to begin was approaching, Nicole asked “Where was the ‘wine lady?' Her friend answered she didn't know. She had not talked to her in a month. Having a house full of guests, Nicole gathered a few of her wines then called a friend, Taffanee and asked to “borrow” a few more bottles. She brought a case. That night Nicole became ‘The Wine Lady.'Nicole guided the guests through a tasting of twelve wines from around the world, sharing what she learned with others. That night she helped many people find their way from, “I only drink…” to, “Wow, this wine is delicious.” This  gave me great pleasure. Her friends suggested she consider getting into the wine business. She started doing some initial research, then moved on with my life. She had plays and streaming series to finish writing. Her interest in being in the wine industry was refueled in Spring 2015 after several incidents occurred at corporate wine tastings – her name not being on the attendee list, her guests almost being turned away, being seated in the back and continuously told to be quiet despite her wine tribe purchasing a lot of wine. The spark was reignited. In June 2016, Nicole attended Open Bite Night, a community block party to support a friend. I mentioned to a friend, Niesha, “There should be a vendor who only sells adult beverages.” She said, “Why not you?” A few weeks later, Niesha contacted me to let me know she had registered me for the event.  There was no charge for first-time participants and they provided the table and chairs. I decided to no longer put off my dream and step out on faith. “Sip & Share Wines” was born.On October 1, 2016, Sip & Share officially opened for business at Open Bite Night: Ridiculous. We SOLD OUT of our handcrafted Red and White Sangrias (now Abundance and Awaken). The Sangrias quickly gained a following, from being served by-the-glass out of a punch bowl to people wanting more than a glass to enjoy as they checked out the various vendors at the different events where we set up.Enter Mason jars with straws in the lids. It was a hit! Then folks begin to ask to take Sip & Share Sangrias home with them. Episode description: We begin this episode of Peace Meal with guest Maddie Duzyk describing her lived experience with anorexia as it compares to her life in recovery. Reflecting on the everyday impact of her eating disorder, she explains how the illness made it difficult to distinguish between her own values and those of her disorder. Fortunately, treatment and recovery have allowed her to find herself again and reconnect with her interests and roles separate from the illness she once mistook for herself.  As an occupational therapist, Maddie now helps clients on their own recovery journey, including during the often difficult transition from higher levels of care to outpatient life. She shares with us her recent doctoral capstone, which explored the perceptions of social eating behaviors among adolescents with eating disorders, and provides suggestions for those supporting a person with an eating disorder during mealtimes. She ends the podcast by expressing her hope that one day clients and providers alike will recognize and employ occupational therapy as an additional resource in eating disorder recovery.  Maddie is a pediatric occupational therapist who received her master's degree in occupational therapy from Spalding University in August 2018. In May 2022, she completed her post-professional doctorate at Eastern Kentucky University, with a capstone on social eating perspectives of adolescents with anorexia nervosa. In the eating disorder community, Maddie is an active member of Kentucky's Eating Disorder Council and was a member of the NEDA Walk Committee in Louisville, KY for two years. She has given several guest lectures on adolescent mental health, spoken at state-level occupational therapy conferences, and taught nationwide continuing education courses for medical professionals.  We cover: The impact of an eating disorder on daily activities and occupations How recovery can reconnect you to personal values, goals, and roles How people with eating disorders experience social pressure while eating, including from those around them and from social media How to support people with eating disorders during shared meals and snacks The important role occupational therapists can play in eating disorder treatment and recovery In Maddie's words: On life in recovery: “Life is so much more than just those numbers on a scale or those miles ran in a day. There's just so much more beauty to be discovered outside of the eating disorder.” On her doctoral capstone on adolescent perceptions of social eating: “Common patterns… were the negative effect of social peer pressures and a lot of those pressures came from social media aspects.” On her vision for the future of occupational therapists (OT): “I would love for more of a concrete definition of OT's role in treating eating disorders… and for providers and patients alike just to be familiar with occupational therapy as a resource––an additional resource, not something to take away from the great care that's already available.” Learn more about The Emily Program online or by calling 1-888-364-5977. - About the podcast: Peace Meal is a podcast hosted by The Emily Program and Veritas Collaborative that covers topics related to eating disorders, body image, and how society may influence our thinking.
