Gogo Nomsa Sibeko, a traditional sangoma healer in South Africa, joins Robbie to talk about this rich tradition and - much like hunters - the many times inaccurate perception around them that comes out of Hollywood and movies. Robbie met Gogo back in November at the Custodians conference and was fascinated by her and the fact that she is facing the same stigmas as hunters are - that we pillage the environment for our own good. Along with her views on sustainability (she needs natural resources for her craft), Gogo discusses the human pressures surrounding them, and more! In this episode, we are joined by Philiswa Makhaye, a traditional Zulu healer from South Africa. Initiated as a Sangoma at the age of 12, Philiswa has dedicated her life to ancestral communion, intergenerational healing and ancient earth-based spiritual wisdom. This conversation offers a rare glimpse into animistic spirituality, free from the limiting frameworks of non-animist worldviews. It continues a thread of enquiry explored in a recent episode with Dr Andy Letcher, who highlighted the animistic discourse as one of the most disruptive to the reductionist Western paradigm. Through Philiswa's insights, we delve into the deep relationality between the land, the ancestors and the healing traditions that have traversed across generations and cultures.Philiswa's presence at this year's Medicine Festival left a lasting impression, particularly during a powerful collective ceremony for peace, where wisdom keepers from around the world offered prayers from each cardinal direction. Her songful prayer, graciously recorded for this episode, is woven into the conversation - a gift to carry in your bones. For those who wish to experience the full, uninterrupted recording of Philiswa's prayer, it is uploaded on our patreon, available for all listeners. Additional meditations and resources are also available for those who wish to support the show. We have recently launched a free hour-long workshop on embodied deep ecology. Bookings have now opened to join us at Earth Medicine, our signature ceremonial retreat.Support the show
My guest this week is South African born Janine Schuller - a Sangoma (African Medicine Women) & Prophet, initiated traditionally in the townships of Cape Town, by both the Zulu and Xhosa Tribes. Although she lives in Ireland with her Irish husband, she returns to the townships most years to meet her Tata (African Father) and enter into ceremony with her Ancestors. Janine shares how She was called to be a Sangoma and the ceremonies that took place in the townships were not always welcoming, but She formed a new family and tribe. She also shares her personal challenges through miscarriages and how accepting She would not be a Mother has brought her peace in her life now. Janine is most passionate about helping people build a relationship with themselves (to trust their intuition); their Ancestors (to know where their messages are coming from and trust them) and with others (to be of service in their own unique way). She shares her own experiences in hope that those listening find their own inner Gentle Warrior and lead their own way. Janine is qualified as a Creative Mindfulness Kids Practitioner, has a Major Award in Early Childhood and Care Education and is currently upgrading her Special Needs Assistance training. Although she isn't 100% sure where this training is taking her and the additional training she may be taking on, she is confident she is stepping firmly into an Advocator Role. To cloud or not to cloud? That's the question many businesses are grappling with when it comes to their communication platforms. While the cloud offers numerous advantages, it also brings risks that may not align with your company's risk tolerance. Fortunately, there's another option. In this episode of AVANT Technology Insights, John Paullin, Sales Engineer and Senior Analyst at AVANT, is joined by Jeremy Wubs, Chief Operating Officer of Sangoma, to explore a lesser-known solution: the hybrid communication model. Discover what this model entails, its key benefits, who's adopting it, and more—all in this insightful discussion.
Interview by Angela CroudaceThe music world is often dominated by Western narratives, but Botswana's Skinflint is challenging those narratives by carving out a unique space for African metal. Founded in late 2006, the band emerged with a vision to blend heavy metal with the richness of African culture and mythology. HEAVY spoke to the band's core members - Giuseppe Sbrana (guitar, vocals), Kebonye (bass), and Cosmos (drums) - to discuss their musical journey, influences, and the themes behind their latest album, Baloi.“Skinflint started with a simple idea: to tell the stories of Botswana and Africa, particularly the darker sides of our mythology that aren't often covered by Western media,” Giuseppe explained. “Africa is rich in history and tales, and we wanted to bring those narratives to life through metal.”The band's name, while catchy, lacks deep meaning. “It just sounded good,” Kebonye said with a chuckle. However, their mission is far from superficial. With a growing fan base across the globe, they have become a significant voice in the underground metal scene, sharing stories steeped in African folklore.Despite their passion, Skinflint has faced significant challenges in promoting their music in Africa. “In the beginning, many people didn't understand what we were trying to do,” Giuseppe admitted. “The metal scene here is small, and venues that support our music are rare. We've had to create our own opportunities.”They emphasize the necessity of collaboration among bands in Botswana, sharing resources to build their own stages and sound systems. “It's a DIY punk attitude,” Giuseppe noted, reflecting on the resilience of local artists. “But the hard work is worth it when we get on stage and share our stories.”Their latest album, Baloi, which translates to "witches" in Setswana, delves deep into Botswana's rich mythology. The title track addresses themes of love and betrayal, inspired by the legend of Lenswala Baratani - a tale of two lovers shunned by their tribe. “These stories are part of who we are,” Giuseppe stated. “We want to share them, even if they can be dark and unsettling.”Another standout track, Sangoma, explores the concept of blood magic and witchcraft. Kebonye explained, “We want to showcase our culture, the good and the bad. People fear what they don't understand, but we believe in the importance of telling these stories.”As Skinflint continues to gain traction internationally, they are often dubbed "Africa's heavy metal Gods." However, the band is quick to redirect the spotlight. “While we appreciate the recognition, there are so many great bands in Africa,” Giuseppe urged. “It's important for people to explore the diversity of African metal and the stories it has to offer.”Their dedication has resulted in a loyal following not just in Africa but worldwide. When I asked about future tours, the excitement was palpable. “We'd love to play in Australia,” Guiseppe exclaimed. “Just connect us with a promoter, and we'll be on the next plane!”At the heart of Skinflint's ethos is collaboration. Each member contributes to the songwriting process, with Giuseppe penning the lyrics while drawing on ideas from the band. “It's a family atmosphere,” he described. “We want to push each other to new heights, incorporating each member's strengths into our music.”As our conversation drew to a close, it was clear that Skinflint is more than just a band. They are storytellers, cultural ambassadors, and innovators in the heavy metal genre, determined to break boundaries and share the untold stories of Africa with the world. Their journey continues, one heavy riff at a time.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

John Lockley is a fully initiated and ordained Sangoma (African Shaman) in two lineages from South Africa, the Xhosa and Swazi nations. His Xhosa apprenticeship took 10 years and he was foreseen in a dream by his teacher, MaMngwevu, a senior Xhosa sangoma from the same tribe as Nelson Mandela, who inivted him to be her apprentice. He was one of the first modern white men in recent times after Apartheid to be awarded the title of 'Ligqira Linkulu' by his Xhosa elders, meaning senior sangoma. His Xhosa name given by his teacher is 'Ucingolweendaba', meaning 'the messenger or bridge between cultures'. He has pioneered the bridge between modern western Psychology and traditional South African healing. For the last 13 years he has been facilitating 'Ubuntu' (Humanity) and Way of the Leopard retreats worldwide, teaching people how they can reconnect to their Ancestors, Spirit and the Earth. A passion of John's is teaching people indigenous African medicine to help them reconnect to the earth. He facilitates this through his 'Dreams & Tracking' retreats in the Kalahari Desert every year, and 'Leopard Warrior trails' in south Africa. John holds an honors degree in Clinical Psychology. He is also a Zen meditation practitioner with over 30 years of experience. He took Buddhist precepts with Zen Master Su Bong from South Korea in 1992. Makhosi Himi Gogo Thule is a devoted sangoma, diviner, prayer warrior, and healer. Sangoma is a Zulu term for a seer who brings forth messages from their ancestors to help or serve their community. This gift is a calling & a responsibility rooted in indigenous cultural knowledge. Makhosi's work acts as a bridge into shamanic ceremonial traditions from her lived cultural experiences guided by the elevated ancestors of her lineages from Burkina Faso, South Africa, & Ancient Kemet. Her healing practice is rooted in ancient African cosmologies, initiations & spiritual traditions that elevate our consciousness to return harmony within our inner and outer nature. She walks the path of a wisdom keeper devoted to preserving and honoring the ancestral way of healing.Makhosi details her initiation, where In the Ubungoma tradition is called Ukuthwasa and is a process of cleansing, releasing, death, and rebirth. Similar with the monk path, there are protocols throughout the day that need to be fulfilled, such as dressing up in certain colors, working with plant medicines and different cleanses, and doing prayers, dances, and songs of the tradition. This opens the dreaming tradition wherein you move through this process of cleansing that opens your dreams, lets you see your ancestors who give you instructions, and show you things about yourself that you need to see and understand in order to move on to the next phase of your life. There's no final date; when you're shown and the elders see that you're seeing what you're supposed to be seeing at that moment, then you pass through the next gate or space and graduate. However, for Makhosi, there's no such thing as graduation and that life itself is an initiation. John Keith Kelley Lockley joins us for Season 1 (2021) of Birdsong. John is a fully initiated shaman, or sangoma, in the Xhosa lineage of South Africa - the same tribe that gave us Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. Traditional healers or shamans (sangomas) of the Xhosa People of South Africa use sacred ceremonies involving herbs, songs and trance rhythms to connect with the ancestors and the natural world to encourage a profound remembering and honoring of the human spirit. John is unique in being initiated in three timeless traditions: African Shamanism as a Xhosa Sangoma, Yoga and Zen Buddhism, and he also holds a degree in Clinical Psychology. He's the author of the book, Leopard Warrior, and the audiobook, The Way of the Leopard, which you can find over at Amazon, through his publisher, Sounds True, or you can head directly to his website to find out more about him and his work. The nature of African spirituality is such that it involves not just the acknowledgment of the existence of the spiritual realm but also the existence of amadlozi and spiritual forces and the individualized encounters that we have with them in our daily lives. During the African Apartheid, Black and White people's lives were completely separated, and so was their medicine. The Medicine Doctor, The Sangoma (Zulu name for Shaman), was accepted and used by half the population while the other half of the population thought it was nonsense. Now, the Sangoma is recognized by the Government of Africa as official healers and their craft as a certified healing modality. The mysticism and healing paradigm of Africa will be explored and experienced through my guest today, Lionel Friedberg, who was born and grew up in South Africa. His new book, ‘Forever In My Veins', brings us on his journey of how being a filmmaker led him to the mysterious world of the African Shaman, how they predicted his life and in the end, how they saved his life. Our lives, the world and the cosmos are stranger and more wonderful than we can ever imagine.
