For centuries, people who died destitute or alone were buried in potters' fields—a Dickensian end that even the most hard-pressed families tried to avoid. Today, more and more relatives are abandoning their dead, leaving it to local governments to dispose of the bodies. Up to 150,000 Americans now go unclaimed each year. Who are they? Why are they being forgotten? And what is the meaning of life if your death doesn't matter to others. The Unclaimed: Abandonment and Hope in the City of Angels (Crown, 2024) is an extraordinary work of narrative nonfiction that took Pamela J. Prickett and Stefan Timmermans eight years in the making to uncover this hidden social world. They follow four individuals in Los Angeles, tracing the twisting, poignant paths that put each at risk of going unclaimed, and introducing us to the scene investigators, notification officers, and crematorium workers who care for them when no one else will. The Unclaimed lays bare the difficult truth that anyone can be abandoned. It forces us to confront a variety of social ills, from the fracturing of families and the loneliness of cities to the toll of rising inequality. But it is also filled with unexpected moments of tenderness. In Boyle Heights, a Mexican American neighborhood not far from the glitter of Hollywood, hundreds of strangers come together each year to mourn the deaths of people they never knew. These ceremonies, springing up across the country, reaffirm our shared humanity and help mend our frayed social fabric. Beautifully crafted and profoundly empathetic, The Unclaimed urges us to expand our circle of caring—in death and in life. Michael O. Johnston, Ph.D. is a Assistant Professor of Sociology at William Penn University. He is the author of The Social Construction of a Cultural Spectacle: Floatzilla (Lexington Books, 2023) and Community Media Representations of Place and Identity at Tug Fest: Reconstructing the Mississippi River (Lexington Books, 2022). We learned this tune from the late Floodster Emeritus Bill Hoke, who — like many other people — said he first heard it at a folk festival some time in the early 1990s.It has been about 25 years ago now. Bill stopped off to visit at the Bowen House while on a trek from his Abingdon, Va., home to Dayton, Ohio, to see his dad. We can still picture him there in The Flood band room, picking up Charlie Bowen's guitar and strumming a chord or two.“You guys ought to do this song,” he said softly, and started singing:I have seen rain on a cloudless day,I have see snows that fell in May ….We were hooked before he even got to the chorus. “No Ash Will Burn” has been in The Flood's repertoire ever since.EmpathyThat memory came rushing back to us last week when our friend David Click mentioned on Facebook how much he has enjoyed the band's performance of that song over the years. In a later message to Charlie, David added that while the song is sad, he found a kind of commiseration in the lyrics, an empathy that touched him especially in times of loss and grief. We understand; the song moves us that way too. For instance, the performance featured in this week's podcast comes from back in mid-November of last year. It was the first rehearsal we had in the days after we learned of the death of our old buddy and band mate Doug Chaffin.Doug absolutely loved this song ever since we included it on our 2011 Wade in the Water album. In this track you might hear how we felt a little closer to our dear companion as we sang it in his memory on that cold November night.About the SongWhen Bill Hoke taught us the song a quarter of a century ago, we didn't even know who wrote it. It was the mid-1990s and the World Wide Web wasn't yet the thing it is today, so we couldn't so easily find out such basic facts as writing credits.Only later did we learn that “No Ash Will Burn” is the work of Muscle Shoals singer/songwriter Walt Aldridge, an Alabaman whose songs over the past 60 years have been recorded by a diverse group of artists, from Lou Reed to Reba McEntire. Inducted into both the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Alabama Music Hall of Fame, Aldridge has written chart-busting hits for Ronnie Milsap ("No Gettin' Over Me," 1981), Earl Thomas Conley ("Holding Her and Loving You," 1982), Travis Tritt ("Modern Day Bonnie and Clyde," 2000), and Heartland ("I Loved Her First," 2006).In the late 1980s, Aldridge also sang lead vocals in the band The Shooters, a country band which charted with seven singles for Epic Records. It was during this creative period that he penned “No Ash Will Burn.”The song was first recorded on Western Dream, the 1989 debut album of Ranch Romance, a Seattle-based western swing, alternative country and bluegrass band.Versions of the tune quickly began circulating in folk music circles after Alice Gerrard recorded it in 1994 and Molly O'Brien released it four years later.A particular favorite of ours is the 2009 rendition by our friend Sallie Sublette and her Idaho-based band, Wild Coyotes, on their Coyote Tracks album. Our Take on the TuneLike a long-time running buddy, “No Ash Will Burn” has been with us for so long that it has generated its own store of Flood lore. One of the best “No Ash” stories comes from about 10 years ago at one of our stranger gigs.It was late May 2013 — about a week before Memorial Day — and after days in the 70s and 80s, the temperature suddenly plunged as we drove north to Fairmont, WV, for the Friday night concert. It was down to the 50s when we took the stage at the amphitheater at Prickett's Fort State Park, and by the time the show was finished 90 minutes later, the mercury had dropped to 45. The cold, along with a brisk west wind, made for a fairly frigid Flood, but it also produced some laughs. As we were shivering on stage and Charlie sang the opening lines -- I have seen rain on a cloudless day / I have seen snows that fell in May -- Dave Peyton leaned over and groaned, "Damn straight!" We cracked up and so did the audience. In this cut, you can hear us rehearsing the song a few days before the big Fairmont Freeze.More Folk Music? Finally, if you'd like more tunes from The Flood's folkier files, check out the Folk playlist on our free Radio Floodango music streaming service. Having passed its first parliamentary reading, the Fast-Track Approval bill is currently open for submission. The bill is described as a ‘one-stop-shop' for resource consents and certificates of compliance required under multiple environmental acts. The fast-track consenting process is claiming to provide significant regional and national benefits, but public health concerns are at the forefront for health experts. Producer Sofia Kent spoke to Marnie Prickett, Research Fellow at the Department of Public Health at the University of Otago, about the bill and what implications it may have.

For centuries, people who died destitute or alone were buried in potters' fields—a Dickensian end that even the most hard-pressed families tried to avoid. Today, however, more and more relatives are abandoning their dead, leaving it to local governments to dispose of the bodies. Up to 150,000 Americans now go unclaimed each year. Who are they? Why are they being forgotten? And what is the meaning of life if your death doesn't matter to others?   In THE UNCLAIMED: Abandonment and Hope in the City of Angels (Crown Hardcover; On Sale 3/12/2024), Prickett and Timmermans follow four individuals in Los Angeles, tracing the twisting, poignant paths that put each at risk of going unclaimed, and introducing us to the scene investigators, notification officers, and crematorium workers who care for them when no one else will. This book lays bare the difficult truth that anyone—even the wealthy and famous—can be abandoned when they die. It forces us to confront a variety of social ills, from the fracturing of families and the loneliness of cities to the toll of rising inequality. But it is also filled with unexpected moments of tenderness: In Boyle Heights, a Mexican American neighborhood not far from the glitter of Hollywood, hundreds of strangers come together each year to mourn thedeaths of people they never knew. As unclaimed numbers statistically increase year by year, these ceremonies are springing up across the country.   Eight years in the making, with hundreds of interviews and meticulous research, THE UNCLAIMED calls on all of us to expand our circle of caring—in death and in life. Water lost to leaks could be costing New Zealand more than $100 million each year.  Otago University research found across the country, 20% of treated drinking water is lost to leaky pipes, at an estimated cost of $122 million.  Co-author of the report, Marnie Prickett told Mike Hosking that our levels of water loss are much higher than international comparisons.  She says Tokyo loses only 5% of water and US cities lose around 10%, so our levels are significant.  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A Small Voice: Conversations With Photographers

After taking a degree in Documentary Photography at the University of Wales, Newport, Ivor Prickett began working in Europe and the Middle East, striving to convey and denounce the effects of war on the civilian population – on the people whose lives it ravages and uproots, whatever side they may be on. Initially focused on the private, domestic sphere of war's long-term social and humanitarian consequences, Ivor's gaze has shifted over the years towards places of forced migration and lands where people seek refuge, and then to the front lines of combat zones. His early projects focused on stories of displaced people throughout the Balkans and Caucasus. Based in the Middle East since 2009, Ivor documented the Arab Spring uprisings in Egypt and Libya, working simultaneously on editorial assignments and his own long term projects. In 2012 he was selected for the World Press Photo Joop swart Masterclass, named as a FOAM Talent and selected by PDN for their 30 under 30 list. Travelling to more than ten countries between 2012 and 2015 Ivor documented the Syrian refugee crisis in the region as well as Europe, working closely in collaboration with UNHCR to produce a comprehensive study of the greatest humanitarian crisis in recent history. Most recently Ivor's work has focused on the fight to defeat ISIS in Iraq and Syria. Ultimately working exclusively for the The New York Times he spent months on the ground, particularly covering the Battle of Mosul, reporting in both words and pictures. His work in Iraq and Syria has earned him multiple World Press Photo Awards and in 2018 he was named as a Pulitzer finalist. The entire body of work titled End of the Caliphate was released as a book by renowned German publisher Steidl in June 2019. Ivor's work has been recognised through a number of prestigious awards including The World Press Photo, The Pulitzer Prizes, The Overseas Press Club Awards, Pictures of the Year International, The Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize and The Ian Parry Scholarship. Most recently he was shortlisted for the Prix Pictet 2019 cycle and his work is currently touring the globe as part of the group exhibition. His pictures have been exhibited widely at institutions such as The Victoria and Albert Museum, Sothebys, Foam Gallery and The National Portrait Gallery, London and he currently has a major solo show at Collezione Maramotti in Reggio Emilia, Italy, In conjunction with the 2023 Fotografia Europea festival, for which the theme is Europe Matters: Visions of a Restless Identity. Ivor's show and the corresponding book is entitled No Home from War: Tales of Survival and Loss and features over fifty photographs taken in conflict zones from 2006 to 2022. It is the the largest show of Ivor's work to date, the first in italy, and it will be up until 30th July 2023.Ivor is represented by Panos Pictures in London and he is a European Canon Ambassador. In episode 203, Ivor discusses, among other things:His route to Newport and what he got from going there. How he got started and his strategy to get his work seen.Arab Spring 2011 and the lessons learned from that.Branching out and needing to get closer to the source.Mosul.The NYT and being asked to write.Going through times of wanting to quit. What keeps him doing it.Is an art gallery the right place for photojournalism? Can your work have an impact?Ukraine.Processing the witnessing of horror and adjusting to normal life.AI and its implications for photojournalism.Referenced:Christine RedmondJoe StirlingKen GrantClive LandonCheryl NewmanTim HetheringtonChris HondrosDavid Furst Website | Instagram“By the time it came to the ISIS work in Iraq and Syria, it was almost like I wanted to get closer to the source myself and see up close what it was I'd been investigating all these years and what people had been running from. Maybe it was a personal fascination that led me there to a certain extent, but also Mosul was essentially a humanitarian crisis as much as a war, and that's why I went in the first place. ”

The six part HBO documentary 100 Foot Wave is the story of big wave surfer Garrett McNamara, as he learns about the biggest waves in the world in Nazaré, Portugal. Then, with help from the town of Nazaré, he and his team set up a safety and support system and invite surfers to come from all over the world to surf. The series captures the amazing power of the ocean, and the passion of surfers chasing big waves and putting themselves at risk of serious injury and death. Surf and ocean cinematographer Mike Prickett was the perfect DP for 100 Foot Wave. Mike has decades of experience shooting in the water, following Garrett and many other big wave surfers around the world. He's shot documentaries Riding Giants, Step Into Liquid and the biopic Chasing Mavericks. As a kid growing up on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, Mike took advantage of living in a tourist spot. He had his own camera, took pictures of the tourists, developed and printed the pictures while they did glass bottom boat tours, and then sold the photos to them when they returned. He soon figured out how to take photos underwater with his camera in a water housing, then got a 16mm Bolex camera and started shooting movies. Mike learned how to surf and began filming the top surfers around the world, developing new and better camera systems as the technology progressed. On a shoot in Tahiti in 2012, Mike saved a diver who got caught in a current that pushed him down at least 220 feet underwater. As Mike swam back up with the diver, they began to run out of air and had to surface quickly. Mike got the bends, which has left his legs partially paralyzed. But he's kept right on shooting, developing different and exciting ways to further the technology of water cinematography. Mike says that even if you can't use your legs very well, it doesn't matter when you're out there. He's able to shoot from the cliffs, use remote controlled jet skis and drones, and fly in helicopters, ride jet skis or boats on the ocean. For 100 Foot Wave, Nazaré, Portugal presented some unique challenges as a location, because the waves are so big and the area gets so foggy. The surfers and the camera crew wait all year for the big waves to come to Nazaré by November and December, and they must be ready to go and shoot at a moment's notice. Shooting is a massive undertaking, with at least 15 camera people on the waves to catch the action. The crew caught the action with long lenses from the cliffs, the beach, and with waterproof drones, but when it was foggy, they needed to have people in the water. Mike and the team built a special remote controlled electric jet ski with a gimbal system that could be controlled by an operator from the cliffs- basically inventing a way to do smooth dolly shots on the water. Recovering From Religion
E87: Conversion Therapy w/ Bill Prickett

*Trigger Warning - talk of suicide This discussion explores the religious community's attempt to “fix” and change sexual orientations other than heterosexual, now known as Conversion Therapy, previously known as “ex-gay” treatments. The methodology varies, but the practice has been thoroughly debunked. Bill Prickett speaks about his personal experience, his rise as a leader in the conversion therapy community, and the harms it causes. Bill Prickett was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, the "Bible Belt" of the Deep South. In early college, after a religious conversion, he decided to pursue a career in the ministry. He served more than five years in youth ministry, eleven years as Pastor of a Southern Baptist Church, and four years as Pastor of an independent, evangelical congregation. To comply with the teachings of his conservative Christian faith, Bill spent more than eight years trying to change his sexual orientation. Eventually, he became Executive Director of an "ex-gay" ministry, working with others who also struggled with homosexuality. Since abandoning those futile efforts, he has spent decades speaking out about the deception and dangers of programs now known as Conversion Therapy. Hosted by Amaia Perez, the RfR Online Programming Director, and Medelin Nolasco, RfR Helpline Volunteer and Social Host.
