Welcome to another Monday when you wake up hoping it's all just been a horrible nightmare, but the you realize this is really happening.I believe that the bad news goes down easier with some snark and expletives, so we'll check in for our usual Monday get-together with Jonathan Larsen of thefuckingnews.substack.com. There's plenty on the crap menu to choose from today: a president openly confirming he wants to defy the Constitution and remain in power indefinitely, SignalGate or WhiskeyLeaks, or whatever you want to call the biggest threat to our national security in recent history and the mountain of denial and hypocrisy from the right concerning it, tomorrow's special elections and how the guy who purchased the presidency for Trump is handing out millions to try to purchase the WI Supreme Court. And yes, there's lots more.We could - and will - also look to the positive and talk about those special elections happening tomorrow (there's cause for cautious optimism), a blow against fascism in France, more protests coming this weekend. I know, the bad stuff outnumbers the good, but I'll continue to try to stay on the lookout for solutions rather than reinforce the crap that they're pushing on us.

It was a weekend with some hope as I tried to focus only on the good stuff, and there was cause for encouragement. Bernie Sanders and AOC held five rallies in Nevada, Arizona and Colorado, and they were awesome in the truest sense of the word. Record crowds everywhere, with reports that most were not necessarily previous Sanders voters or supporters. People are rising up and there are more actions planned. Keep 'em coming! It's been a couple of weeks since Jonathan Larsen of thefuckingnews.substack.com was here, but he's back today. Good thing because there's lots of breaking news that shows just how broken this country is... Just lovely.... Feel safe yet?

The coup is in full swing and we're not going to take it. I just had to say that right off the bat. D'ump went golfing this weekend, but on days 12 & 13 of this unconstitutional regime, his minions were hard at work... especially Elon Musk, WHO NOBODY CAST A SINGLE VOTE FOR. He has seized parts of the US Treasury that pays our bills and installed some kids barely out of high school who have access to all Americans' most sensitive data. They told us what they were going to do in Project 2024, that the Convicted Felon insisted he knew nothing about, yet most of the 300 ridiculous Executive Orders he's already signed are directly lifted from that manifesto. And enough Americans fell for it or just stayed home on election day to give him the go-ahead to complete the coup he started during the first time they put him in power. Today is Monday, so I'll be joined by Jonathan Larsen of thefuckingnews.substack.com who's doing a great job covering Trump's ongoing attempt to destroy the United States of America and our constitution. Yes, I know what's happening today. Frankly, the less said about the inauguration, the better. So today, we'll hear President Biden's farewell address which I never got to last week. Maybe. We may hear some words of wisdom and warnings from Timothy Snyder ("On Tyranny"). Then we'll check in with Jonathan Larsen of thefuckingnews.substack.com. His Saturday post detailed the accomplishments of the Biden/Harris administration -- a good reference to hold on to as we move forward and try to navigate the next four years. I promised you I'd post this here. Timothy Snyder gave us a gift that I'll now share with you. You may want to refer back to this a lot over the next four years: Twenty Lessons On Tyranny Timothy Snyder Do not obey in advance. Most of the power of authoritarianism is freely given. In times like these, individuals think ahead about what a more repressive government will want and then offer themselves without being asked. A citizen who adapts in this way is teaching power what it can do. Defend institutions. It is institutions that help us to preserve decency. They need our help as well. Do not speak of "our institutions" unless you make them yours by acting on their behalf. Institutions do not protect themselves. They fall one after the other unless each is defended from the beginning. So choose an institution you care about -- a court, a newspaper, a law, a labor union -- and take its side. Beware the one-party state. The parties that remade states and suppressed rivals were not omnipotent from the start. They exploited a historic moment to make political life impossible for their opponents. So support the multiple-party system and defend the rules of democratic elections. Vote in local and state elections while you can. Consider running for office. Take responsibility for the face of the world. The symbols of today enable the reality of tomorrow. Notice the swastikas and the other signs of hate. Do not look away, and do not get used to them. Remove them yourself and set an example for others to do so. Remember professional ethics. When political leaders set a negative example, professional commitments to just practice become more important. It is hard to subvert a rule-of-law state without lawyers, or to hold show trials without judges. Authoritarians need obedient civil servants, and concentration camp directors seek businessmen interested in cheap labor. Be wary of paramilitaries. When the men with guns who have always claimed to be against the system start wearing uniforms and marching with torches and pictures of a leader, the end is nigh. When the pro-leader paramilitary and the official police and military intermingle, the end has come. Be reflective if you must be armed. If you carry a weapon in public service, may God bless you and keep you. But know that evils of the past involved policemen and soldiers finding themselves, one day, doing irregular things. Be ready to say no. Stand out. Someone has to. It is easy to follow along. It can feel strange to do or say something different. But without that unease, there is no freedom. Remember Rosa Parks. The moment you set an example, the spell of the status quo is broken, and others will follow. Be kind to our language. Avoid pronouncing the phrases everyone else does. Think up your own way of speaking, even if only to convey that thing you think everyone is saying. Make an effort to separate yourself from the internet. Read books. Believe in truth. To abandon facts is to abandon freedom. If nothing is true, then no one can criticize power, because there is no basis upon which to do so. If nothing is true, then all is spectacle. The biggest wallet pays for the most blinding lights. Investigate. Figure things out for yourself. Spend more time with long articles. Subsidize investigative journalism by subscribing to print media. Realize that some of what is on the internet is there to harm you. Learn about sites that investigate propaganda campaigns (some of which come from abroad). Take responsibility for what you communicate with others. Make eye contact and small talk. This is not just polite. It is part of being a citizen and a responsible member of society. It is also a way to stay in touch with your surroundings, break down social barriers, and understand whom you should and should not trust. If we enter a culture of denunciation, you will want to know the psychological landscape of your daily life. Practice corporeal politics. Power wants your body softening in your chair and your emotions dissipating on the screen. Get outside. Put your body in unfamiliar places with unfamiliar people. Make new friends and march with them. Establish a private life. Nastier rulers will use what they know about you to push you around. Scrub your computer of malware on a regular basis. Remember that email is skywriting. Consider using alternative forms of the internet, or simply using it less. Have personal exchanges in person. For the same reason, resolve any legal trouble. Tyrants seek the hook on which to hang you. Try not to have hooks. Contribute to good causes. Be active in organizations, political or not, that express your own view of life. Pick a charity or two and set up autopay. Then you will have made a free choice that supports civil society and helps others to do good. Learn from peers in other countries. Keep up your friendships abroad, or make new friends in other countries. The present difficulties in the United States are an element of a larger trend. And no country is going to find a solution by itself. Make sure you and your family have passports. Listen for dangerous words. Be alert to use of the words "extremism" and "terrorism." Be alive to the fatal notions of "emergency" and "exception." Be angry about the treacherous use of patriotic vocabulary. Be calm when the unthinkable arrives. Modern tyranny is terror management. When the terrorist attack comes, remember that authoritarians exploit such events in order to consolidate power. The sudden disaster that requires the end of checks and balances, the dissolution of opposition parties, the suspension of freedom of expression, the right to a fair trial, and so on, is the oldest trick in the Hitlerian book. Do not fall for it. Be a patriot. Set a good example of what America means for the generations to come. They will need it. Be as courageous as you can. If none of us is prepared to die for freedom, then all of us will die under tyranny. These lessons are the openings of the twenty chapters of my little 2017 book On Tyranny, which has just been lightly edited since in successive printings to account for the Big Lie, the coup attempt, the war in Ukraine, and the risks we face in 2024. The lessons remain the same. On Tyranny has also been published in a beautiful graphic edition, illustrated by Nora Krug. For my positive ideas about liberty, see my new book, On Freedom.

Remember "every accusation is a confession". The next four years are going to be Opposite World on steroids. You know what TFN stands for at this point, right? It's The Fucking News. It just doesn't stop. And it's the cause of the giant pit in my stomach right now that has had me feeling nauseated and unable to function most of the time these days. If you've been listening to this show for a while, you may remember the effect the 2016 election had on my mind, soul and being. When TFG was declared winner, that sickness permeated every inch of my body and psyche and wreaked havoc on me for four long years. I'm not a medical professional, but my best description of what happened to me was a total breakdown. Somehow I managed to mostly go through the motions and keep this show going, but it was not easy. And it was not fun. I've struggled with depression since adolescence, but the stress and anxiety that's ravaged my mind and body thanks to that orange narcissistic fascist is really taking a toll on me. I'll do my best to muddle through... but please know that if I'm off the air at all this week, that's why. I know it's not rational. NOTHING about him is rational. This is opposite world on steroids. I believe we'll be ok. I believe he will lose and that GOOD will triumph over evil. Unfortunately, none of those rational beliefs are doing a good job of alleviating what's happening in my head. But I'll keep trying to battle those demons -- in real life, in my mind and all over the fucking internet and tv. I'll share a few things that should help (and do, albeit temporarily). And we'll check in with Jonathan Larsen of TheFuckingNews.substack.com as we do each Monday.... And if you're feeling as I am, please know you're not alone. But we will survive. And we will win.

Welcome to a new week. As expected the first criminal trial of Donald Trump is now underway in a NYC courtroom. Both sides delivered their opening statements and the first witness began giving his testimony. The prosecution started strong with David Pecker as the first on the stand. Notwithstanding his quite appropriate name, the former head honcho of the National Enquirer who ran interference for TFG with his "catch & kill" schemes to deal with stories that would be damaging for the orange one, will return to the stand when the court reconvenes tomorrow morning. In general terms, I believe Christian nationalism is bad history, bad politics, and bad religion. In prior episodes, I have concentrated on the bad history. In this segment and the next, I focus mainly on the bad politics. Around the world, religious nationalism is associated with state sponsored violence against citizens, use of force to take political control, erosion of the separation of church and state, degrading of democratic principles and attacks on minority rights. I believe Christian nationalism is also bad for Christianity which I will examine in the next episode.Note: I did not mention that long time Fellowship leader Doug Coe passed away in 2017. I believe that explains some of the shifting within the Fellowship. Having said that, there always was an element within that group which didn't make a strong commitment to human rights. Making Mondays suck a little less... Mondays come every week, inconveniently at the end of a weekend. It began with the Supreme/Extreme Court deciding unanimously that TFG will be on the primary ballots, saying that regardless of whether or not Section 3 of the 14th Amendment applies, it's up to Congress to make that call, not the individual states. Inflation sucks. It sucked back in the 70s and 80s too. It's a word we hadn't hear much about in recent years... there was plenty more to terrorize us even without the specter of inflation. But like war, it's back and we're trying to figure out how to deal with it. This morning, Jonathan Larsen sent me a link to an article he wrote, "How Trump Caused Inflation: Trump Blocked Regulations Against Price Manipulation; Biden Has Yet to Acknowledge the Problem"-- and I think he's on to something. So Jonathan joins us today to talk about that. Also happening today, the senate is voting on the Women's Health Protection Act which would codify into law Roe v Wade, ostensibly preventing the Supreme Court from killing women's right to control our bodies. But it's doomed to fail as the Dems don't have 60 votes to overcome a filibuster. Damn, they don't even have the 50 they'd need if the Senate operated as a democracy. Go figure.

First reported on by Jeff Sharlet in his book, and later Netflix series "The Family," this clandestine evangelical organization has been actively working the corridors of power worldwide for decades, building relationships and seeking out "key men" to win to Christ--in the hopes that they will influence their nations and spheres of influence for the Kingdom of God.  Find out more by listening in! For Jonathan Larsen, an 18-year Citi veteran, joining China's Ping An Insurance (Group) Co. was like an army general being asked to lead a small, elite squad. As Global Head of Retail Banking and Mortgages at Citi, Larsen oversaw a global team of 80,000 employees. But when he joined Ping An this May as Chief Innovation Officer and CEO of the US$1 billion Ping An Global Voyager Fund, the team was just him and his assistant on his first day. But his responsibilities and opportunities are possibly greater than ever. As CEO of Ping An's new Global Voyager Fund, Larsen is leading a growing team of professionals to deploy US$1 billion to companies globally to help the Chinese insurance giant's drive toward becoming an innovative conglomerate. On top of that, as chief innovation officer of the whole group, Larsen works with the senior management team to make sure that Ping An comes out as a leader of innovation ahead of its competitors in the mid- to long-term. "Its a welcome change and it’s very energizing to come to a new domain with very different mission and agenda. Even though the scope of people management is different, the nature of the roles are actually complimentary," Larsen told China Money Network at Ping An's Hong Kong office at the International Finance Center. Ping An, the country’s largest insurer by market value, launched its first overseas fund - the Global Voyager Fund - to primarily invest in fintech and healthcare technology globally, with US$1 billion to be allocated by the parent group. The fund has an ambitious objective: to fully invest the US$1 billion in the next three to four years in companies that will "move the needle" for Ping An's innovation objectives. "The Global Voyager Fund is one of many levers for driving innovation within Ping An," says Larsen. "It’s about making investments in companies that have distinctive technologies, platforms and models that could achieve success and have strategic relevance for Ping An’s existing and new business." For fintech, Larsen says that he is most concerned with three parameters when considering a potential investment: the technology, how that technology is likely to unlock value, and what is the synergy between the technology and Ping An. A positive investment needs to click all three boxes. Personal and business lending platforms, business model innovations and insurance tech space are some of the areas that Ping An is particularly interested in, Larsen says. In September, Ping An Global Voyager Fund made its first investment in European fintech company, 10x Future Technologies, a fintech company founded by former Barclays CEO Antony Jenkins. The company focuses on providing holistic technology solutions to banks that allow them to keep their APIs and data in one place. Such a platform could be integrated in Ping An's own bank and its Ping An Financial OneConnect, a platform under Ping An tasked with exporting the fintech capacity of the group to other financial institutions. In healthcare, Ping An has paid attention to the use of artificial intelligence (AI) for diagnostics, helping physicians shape treatment paths, as well as the use of wearables, and mobile technology for adherence monitoring and follow-up consultations. Ping An, of course, has a healthcare insurance business in China and also owns Good Doctor, a personal health mobile app with 500,000 daily active users. Any investments in these areas would likely have an attractive strategic component for Ping An, Larsen says. Read an interview Q&A below. Also subscribe to China Money Podcast for free in the iTunes store, or subscribe to our weekly newsletter.   Q: You joined Ping An in May as chief innovation officer and also the CEO of the US$1 billion Ping An Global Voyager Fund.
