On June 6, 2015, two convicted murderers escaped from Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York—a maximum-security prison that hadn't seen a successful escape in over 150 years. John Killick is an Australian former bank robber, author and one of the country's most notorious prison escapees. Over a criminal career spanning several decades, he spent more than 30 years in prison for a series of armed robberies, becoming widely known during the early days of Australia's decimal currency era. Killick's first offences date back to the 1960s, with much of his criminal activity driven by gambling and a high-risk lifestyle. His name became part of Australian crime history through repeated convictions and time served across multiple correctional facilities. He is most famously associated with the dramatic 1999 helicopter escape from Silverwater Prison in Sydney, orchestrated by his partner Lucy Dudko. The escape, which saw a hijacked helicopter land inside the prison yard to extract Killick, captured national attention. The pair remained on the run for 45 days before being apprehended, cementing the incident as one of the boldest prison breaks in Australia. Following his eventual release, Killick turned to writing and public speaking, sharing reflections on his life, criminal past and time in prison. The official story was that convicted rapist and murderer Thabo Bester died in a South African prison fire on May 3, 2022, but the truth was far more shocking: he had faked his own death with a stolen corpse and easily walked out of a maximum security prison. Known as "The Facebook Rapist" for luring women with fake international modeling opportunities, Bester was serving a 30-year sentence for the rape and robbery of two women and the murder of his girlfriend, Nomfundo Tyhulu, in 2011. In this episode, we unravel the chaotic details of his escape and his life on the run: The Fake Death: An investigation into the cell fire and the burned remains raised immediate suspicion. The body used to stage his death was later confirmed to have died before the fire from blunt force trauma to the head, and DNA did not match Bester . While operating a prison dog program, Toby met and fell in love with John Manard, a man serving a life sentence for a deadly carjacking. Feelings grew between the two, and on February 12th, 2006, Toby smuggled John out of prison.
