It bombed at the box office in the wake Trump's election but Warren Beatty's long-awaited Howard Hughes film is a prophetic masterpiece of a swan song from one of America's greatest film directors. Directed by Warren Beatty. Starring Alden Ehrenreich, Lily Collins, Matthew Broderick, Anette Benning, Martin Sheen, Alec Baldwin, Candice Bergen, Steve Coogan and Beatty himself. Oh yeah, and featuring Donald Trump’s treasury secretary, Steve Mnuchin AND Jumpy The Dog. How is the world wrong about this film? From Andras: RULES DON’T APPLY might have been a financial failure but it is an unqualified artistic success. Perfectly cast. Beautifully shot. A strange and conflicting story of a strange a conflicting man, featuring a tender tour de force of a title song performed by Lily Collins. RULES DON'T APPLY has about as much to say as you’d expect from the creative force behind “Bullworth”, “Reds”, “Shampoo” and “Bonnie & Clyde”, which is A LOT. In this episode, a group of Nobel Prize winners endorse Biden which doesn't say much for the value of the prize. Nancy Pelosi caught on tape bucking California COVID rules and she's destroying a business to cover it up. Rough start for the NBA with viewership down in double digits, and Lebron doesn't help the cause.
Concentration gets you rich, diversification keeps you rich. With that being said, it’s important to clarify the difference between investing in publicly traded financial markets versus an entrepreneur who is investing in a business they have a material involvement in. When I talk about the benefits of diversification I’m talking SOLELY about investing in financial markets, because successful entrepreneurs DO play by a different set of rules. One of these things is not like the others. In this episode we discuss Corey Lewandowski, Brett Kavanaugh, Boris Johnson Bibi Netanyahu, and James Madison. PLUS Ian gives Elizabeth Warren the full theater critic treatment in his "Communications Corner."
Ya girl, Samniqueka, successfully defended her dissertation but she needed to unpack the interactions that happened over the course of that two hours. From giving suggestions on how to improve papers that have already been published to a handshake that was a little too firm. It took a second to be happy about passing. Ya won’t believe the criticism about publishing before the defense. Not only do we have to work twice as hard, when we do, they still got a problem with it. On a second note, anxiety is real. If someone is trying to talk to you, don’t automatically say “You got this”. Check up on your strong friends and family cause even though they look like they got it together, they may be stressing and trying to tell you and telling them that they got this, ain’t helping.

Edith's guest this week requires very little introduction. An actor, writer, director and producer, he appeared in his first film in 1961 and has subsequently been nominated for no fewer than 14 Oscars, winning best director for Reds in 1981. We are,of course, talking about the legend that is Warren Beatty. Throughout his career, Warren has demonstrated a passion for source cues in particular - from the bubble-gum pop of Shampoo to the rap that provides the unlikely sonic inspiration for Bulworth. He's also worked with world-renowned composers Stephen Sondheim, Ennio Morricone and Danny Elfman. Still going strong at 80, his latest project is Rules Don't Apply - which he wrote, directed and also stars in as real-life business tycoon Howard Hughes. Among the cast is Lily Collins, who as aspiring actress Marla Mabrey performs a specially commissioned song during the narrative. We'll hear a bit of that, but this particular episode begins, as it ends, with the piano maestro that is Errol Garner ..

Director Warren Beatty discusses his new film, Rules Don't Apply, with Robert Benjamin. Set during the Golden Age of Hollywood, the film tells the story a young, aspiring actress under contract by Howard Hughes who develops an attraction for her driver. Their mutual attraction violates Hughes' rule that no employee may have a relationship with a contract actress.

WAIT - Don’t hit that back button! Maybe you haven't seen Rules Don’t Apply... and you maybe you haven't heard of McCabe and Mrs. Miller, but you should definitely listen to this episode. Chris and Jacob discuss exactly why you should seek out both of these Warren Beatty flicks! Why is John McCabe so convinced everyone he runs into has a turd in their pocket?? Listen and find out! PLUS - the bi-weekly Midnight Warrior Fantasy Movie League recap and Chris makes not one, but two beer recommendations. This episode's got more tricks than a monkey on a hundred yards of grapevine!
We're back at it again. Christopher Cross and Dylan Schwan rejoice with discussions of Oscar contender, Jackie, from director Pablo Larrain and starring Natalie Portman as Jackie Kennedy. We talk about accents, grief and the experimental nature of the film. Not strictly a biopic, Jackie has plenty to discuss including Portman's performance and the haunting score by Mica Levi. Is Jackie and Oscar frontrunner? You'll have to listen to find out. As for other movies, Dylan managed to catch up on plenty of films including The Wailing, Rules Don't Apply and Christine. So hear his thoughts on those, and Chris talks about the upcoming animated film, Sing, which opens on December 21st. There's also a lot to talk about when it comes to the Golden Globe nominations and we do some quick predictions of what we think will win. Oh and there was a The Fate of the Furious trailer so naturally we're going to talk all about that. Next week is Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, so prepare for some hot takes on the first spin-off film in the franchise. We'll also finally discuss Westworld.
Let's talk about some movies, shall we? It's right after Thanksgiving and Jack and Andrew have seen some movies, boy howdy! Jack goes through a number of new releases, and also goes back to the birth of cinema to talk about silent short films that you should all see. Andrew meanwhile checks out a slightly obscure French pulp thriller and a classic Robert Redford espionage film from 1975. email us at wagesofcinema@gmail.com subscribe on iTunes! https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-wages-of-cinema/id977881387?mt=2 MOVIES: 1) Trolls (2016) 2) The Handmaiden (2016) 3) Judex (1963) 4) Rules Don't Apply (2016) 5) Allied (2016) 6) Three Days of the Condor (1975) Silent Shorts: 7)The Hallucinations of Baron Munchausen (1911) 8) The New York Hat (1912) 9) A Corner in Wheat (1909) 10) The Lonely Villa (1909) 11) The 'Teddy' Bears (1907) 12) One A.M. We're reviewing Allied & Rules Don't Apply this week, and we'll give you an initial rundown of the films that are in serious contention this award season. Two very different movies, both getting a lot of marketing push, but do either of them deliver? More importantly, do you need to see either of them in theaters? It's a World War II spy flick vs. Warren Beatty in what is possibly a passion project gone wrong. As the season gets into full swing, people are going to be talking about these, and we'll let you know if they're worth your time.
We hope you all had a grand Thanksgiving! May your harvests be bountiful! We are back looking at a rather uninspired couple of new releases. First, it's Robert Zemeckis' World War II drama "Allied," with Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard. And it's old directors week here, apparently, with Warren Beatty's long-awaited, and nearly entirely ignored, "Rules Don't Apply." At least he finally got to play Howard Hughes. We have a lot more fun with our Reboot section. We tackle one of our favorite movies from the '90s, Peter Weir's visionary "The Truman Show" from 1998. And for a long time, Grierson has loved 2008's "Hancock." Does he feel the same way today? Only one way to find out. Timestamps: 5:30 "Allied" 22:55 "Rules Don't Apply" 34:20 "The Truman Show" 53:15 "Hancock" We hope you enjoy. Let us know what you think @griersonleitch on Twitter, or griersonleitch@newrepublic.com. "Allied" has The Cogill's buzzing about a sandstorm love scene between Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard. Warren Beatty returns to the big screen directing himself as Howard Hughes in the 1950's romantic-comedy-drama, "Rules Don't Apply." Sommelier, Hayley Hamilton Cogill, pairs the dusty North African WWII drama with a wine from Domain Ouled Thaleb from Morocco, and steps up to Warren Beatty's big budget movie with a "Rule Breaker" wine. https://www.facebook.com/cogillconsulting https://twitter.com/garycogill https://www.facebook.com/dallasuncorked https://twitter.com/DallasUncorked https://instagram.com/DallasUncorked
Happy post-Thanksgiving! First, we've got some singing, and then we've got a whole mess o' movies, beginning with Kris' take on Warren Beatty's RULES DON'T APPLY. Then Dave goes through BAD SANTA 2, and Evan wraps things up with Disney's MOANA. And then there's more singing (briefly!).
