Sam was sailing in his Cape Dory 28 between the Canary Islands and Dakkar when I spoke to him. Before the interview, I talk about the San Blas Islands. Sam and I talk about the conditions, his Cape Dory 28, his windvane and electronic autopilots, sailing a full-keel boat, replacing the bronze chainplates, fixing a leaking hull-deck joint, Morocco, The Canary Islands, The Gambia, sailing to The Bahamas on a 16' Hobie Cat, fear, sailing for the sailing or for the destinations, solo sailing and why we love it, the Annapolis Boat Show, and more. Tune in next week for a continuation of this conversation. Sam and I got cut off at the end of this one, as he was underway and without reliable internet. The Children's Museum of Indianapolis is hosting Fiesta De La Familia on Sunday to celebrate Mexican Independence Day ahead of Monday. The Fiesta will celebrate the hundreds of cultures across Latin America through family fun activities and crafts, including a worry doll.A worry doll, or Muñeca Quitapena, are dolls originating from the Mayan regions of Guatemala and Mexico. According to folklore, the dolls are placed under your pillow, and remove your worries while you sleep.Melissa Trumpey, director of public events at the Children's Museum, says another art activity includes metal inscribing. “We also have a Mexican metal art activity, they'll get a blank piece of metal and be able to inscribe anything they want and take that piece of art home with them.”Other activities Trumpey described include educational events, like learning about the colorful textiles of the Guna people on the San Blas Islands. Photo booths will also be set up, allowing guests to take a photo together and then decorate a photo frame, thinking about your family and traditions. Trumpey says having events like this allows families to learn new things and try them out at the Museum. “It's just really great, we're all about educating and creating those experiences for children and families to do together,” she said.Multiple community groups and partners will be on hand at the event, including Riley Children's Health. They will administer vaccinations to anyone 6 months old and older. The Fiesta starts at 10 a.m. on Sunday.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Extreme weather is forcing communities to leave their homes and it's becoming a bigger and bigger issue. What can we do about it? In this edition of BBC Inside Science, Gaia Vince and her guests discuss what climate displacement means for people all over the world. We hear from Diwigdi Valiente, a member of the Guna Yala people of the San Blas Islands in Panama, where whole communities have already begun to evacuate. Closer to home the experts consider the impact of rising sea levels on British coastal communities. Guests are: Richard Betts, head of climate impacts at the UK Met Office and a professor at the University of Exeter; Lucy Easthope, professor in practice of risk and hazard at the University of Durham and a leading adviser on emergency planning and disaster recovery; Professor Guillermo Rein, an expert in fire science at Imperial College London; and Michael Szoenyi, head of flood resilience at Zurich Insurance. He explains why climate change has become such an important factor for business and individuals planning for the future – and why it's essential we don't leave big decisions about where we should live to the last minute. Presenter: Gaia Vince Producer: Clem Hitchcock Content Producer: Alice Lipscombe-Southwell Editor: Richard Collings
We delve into this delightful holiday activity and suggest some of the best places to try it out. You don't need to go as far as Panama's San Blas Islands as the UK has island hops that are sometimes much easier than you'd think.

Wendy Stuart Kaplan is an actress, comedian, on camera host, and model. She feels deep down in her past life, she was a famous explorer because she has spent this life recreating that quest for adventure. Wendy is known for her quirky sensibility, and off beat interpretation of characters that have gotten her cast in film, TV, and theatre. She believes that a successful performer must draw from their own life experience. Whether bantering with Katy Couric as an antique collector, playing a frustrated casting director for an AT&T industrial, or exploring the secrets of The Woolworth Building on Time Traveling With Brian Unger, Wendy Stuart Kaplan brings a signature flare to everything she does. With a combination of studying anthropology and theatre initiated a dramatic life change, lead Wendy to a village in Nigeria to study voodoo. The locals called her "Oyebo", which means the white skin around a peeled orange. Her passion for the unusual has also taken her to the Amazon where her adventures included interviewing a tapir, eating reeds with the Amayra Indians in Lake Titicaca in Peru, and dancing with the Kuna Indians in the San Blas Islands. Fit Model Extraordinaire Wendy is known in the fashion industry as an expert fit model and consultant working with major brands such as; Eileen Fischer, Nina McLemore, and Michael Kors Outerwear as a standard for size 8 clothing. Model With A Mission is a series of videos she's created, interviewing an international group of everyday people and experts, who are protecting endangered species, and cultures from environmental impact. Wendy's published memoir "She's The Last Model Standing" is a hilarious, occasionally poignant story of coming to New York City with dreams of becoming a supermodel, and ending up becoming one of the most sought after fit models in the industry. Wendy is known for her quick wit. When asked about what it takes to be a fir model she quickly retorted, "I cover the asses of the masses". Her path along the way was often rocky, but led to meeting Andy Warhol, shooting with Francesco Scavullo, and starring so far off Broadway that she felt she was almost in the Hudson River. NYC is home, shared with a long haired chihuahua, a cockatoo, two English Angoras, a husband and a daughter. All the animals roam freely ... just like Wendy Kaplan Stuart. This is a short episode I recorded in Minca, Columbia. I was going to delete it and record a new one as I wasn't initially happy with the sound quality. After listening to it a second time, I decided to keep it and upload it as the sounds of the birds in the background give a better sense of the jungle and the sounds of wildlife. This episode covers my last days in Panama, Sailboat Trip through the San Blas Islands, time in Cartegena, Palomino & Minca. Enjoy!
Have you ever wanted to discover the islands that look like the ones in the Corona commercials where there is a single palm tree with a small hut? Well, you can find about 360 of them just off the coast of Panama in the San Blas Islands. We had a wonderful time on a private yacht exploring the islands after spending time in Panama City and Casco Viejo. Panama is a beautiful place to visit to give yourself an international experience while not venturing too far away from the States. We highly recommend this destination for those that are looking to soak up the sun, enjoy an enjoyable cultural experience, and visit the most unique island colony in the world. Main Topics Covered: Panama City, Casco Viejo, and San Blas Links Mentioned in the Episode: Books We Love - Discover the books we have read and enjoyed during and before our travels Panama is in Central America bordering the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea. We stayed in an Airbnb but we enjoyed visiting the Hard Rock Hotel while in Panama City. The Panama Papers are 11.5 million leaked documents that detail financial and attorney–client information for more than 214,488 offshore entities. Casco Viejo, Panama is the beautiful, historic district of Panama City dating back to 1673. Manolol Carocol is the restaurant we talk about that we enjoyed but is now permanently closed. Casa Sucre is my favorite cafe that is now much more than just a great place to get coffee. San Blas Islands are a dream destination on the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean. The sailboat couple that we went with no longer operates in Panama. Make sure you understand what to pack. Pack Less! Here is a great post on everything we packed in a single backpack. THE WAY TO CAPE THANK GOD Intending to describe family cruising with one's wife as literally First Mate, I get hung up in the details of our cruise through the San Blas Islands and to Cartegena, Colombia (our favorite port). From there, we beat up through the Southwest Caribbean to the islands of San Andres and Providencia where, seeking local knowledge of the route ahead, I benefit from meeting Captain John Bull. This is all to set the scene for the next Capercast, which tells of our greatest navigational challenge, wherein Jo Anna and I -- while dealing with the urgency of finding our way -- become close to being one, an entity together with our sons.
This is the second half of the interview with Tate McDaniel of Sundowner Sails Again blog and YouTube channel. He talks about sailing his boat from Isla Mujeres, Mexico to the remote island of Providencia, Columbia and then to the San Blas Islands in Panama. He discusses why El Nino and cheap gas convinced him 2016 was the year to pause his around the world quest and RV across America before rejoining his 32' Westsail sailboat in Panama to sail the South Pacific in 2017. Tate McDaniel of the Sundowner Sails Again's blog and uTube channel talked to me over the weekend. This episode looks at getting his boat, a Westsail 32' named Sundowner, ready for a round the world trip. This covers the first half of his trip in 2015, crossing the Gulf of Mexico from New Orleans to Key West. He discusses his travels in Cuba and his trip to and time in Isla Mujeres with his wife Dani. In the next episode he discusses his trip to Provedencia, the San Blas Islands in Panama, and why gas prices and El Nino make 2016 a good year to go RVing. I also talk about the current changing state of Cuba regulations and my experience with the application process. It is conceivable that sailing to Cuba could get a lot easier in a few days. We've just gone and cycled across Central America! How about that? We look back on the best of times in this week's How Are You? Where Are You? podcast. We talk about how to cross the Darien Gap between Central and South America and why we opted to sail in a yacht through the San Blas Islands captained by a maniacal Italian instead of transforming our steeds into pedalos in an attempt to cross these supposedly smuggler-infested waters. Colombia is freaking awesome by the way but hang on for episode 27 for more on that.
On the San Blas Islands, people with albinism save the world during lunar eclipse. Kuna cosmology holds that during a lunar eclipse, a jaguar is eating the moon. Kunas with albinism fire arrows at the celestial jaguar and save the world. Unlike the classic Hollywood trope of the evil albino, cultural and social ideas about albinism are not universally negative. Albinism has deep spiritual and symbolic power in the believe systems of many indigenous peoples across the Americas. Albinism is characterized by little or no pigment in the skin, hair or eyes, low vision and photosensitivity. In some cultures, those with the condition are afforded a special status. People with albinism figure prominently in the cosmology of the Kuna. One of the eight original humans had the condition. During lunar eclipses, the Kuna must stay indoors, except the “moon children” (Kunas with albinism) who fire arrows at the celestial jaguar and save the people. This episode features Kelly Allen, a writer and researcher on the social conditions of people with albinism in Uganda and Panama. The episode uses a clip from CBC Radio One's "The Imaginary Albino" by G Mullins & L Hale. as well as an interview conducted with Kelly Allen, academic and researcher on social responses to albinism in Uganda and Panama.
