Can one person sailing solo around the world contribute to scientific knowledge? What happens when you encounter illegal fishing vessels in the middle of the ocean? How can we address the growing crisis of plastic pollution in our seas? In this episode, we dive into these questions with Bert Terhart, a scientist, explorer and entrepreneur who circumnavigated the globe alone on his sailing yacht, conducting citizen science along the way.During our conversation, Bert shares his first-hand observations of environmental challenges facing our oceans, from illegal fishing fleets operating with impunity to the stark reality of plastic pollution. We discuss how he worked with researchers to track ocean currents, monitor microplastics and count endangered albatross populations during his journey. Bert offers a shocking statistic: for some commercially exploited species of fish, approximately 80% of the commercial catches are illegal or unregulated, highlighting how enforcement remains one of our biggest environmental challenges.Beyond observations, we explore how individuals and businesses can engage positively with environmental issues. Bert emphasises the importance of persistence in creating meaningful change and discusses how new technologies, including AI, might help solve complex environmental problems. Despite the challenges, he remains optimistic about our future, believing that human ingenuity and our ability to adapt will ultimately outpace our capacity for environmental destruction – if we can combine good science with effective policy and consistent action.Further reading:Bert's Personal Website (bertterhart.com)The 5 Great Capes | Around alone via the 5 Great CapesSubscribe to Tommy's Outdoors: Conservation and Science NewsletterSupport the Podcast and Buy Me a Coffee.Recommended Books: tommysoutdoors.com/booksMerch: tommysoutdoors.com/shopFollow Tommy's Outdoors on Bluesky, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and Facebook---Bert terHart, self-described as 'soldier, sailor, scientist, adventurer, serial entrepreneur and author', just seems to have a knack for knocking off the impossible. Send me a DM here (it doesn't let me respond), OR email me: imagineabetterworld2020@gmail.comToday I'm honored to introduce you all to: Raytheon whistleblower, former Navy firefighter and contractor for Raytheon, Stargate Project and MK ULTRA survivor, travel lover, and a man on a mission to help circumnavigate the gatekeepers of the ‘disclosure commodity' market: Eric HeckerWhen I met Eric, I was familiar with his story of being a whistleblower for witnessing highly advanced directed energy weapons – which we often call ‘DEWs' on this podcast – being used for crimes against humanity during his time at the South Pole Facility in Antarctica he was stationed at and has testified to congress under oath about. Having listened to a few of Eric's interviews, it's shocking, alarming, and very disturbing to listen to his first-hand experiences and to consider the implications on humanity that his claims hold. While we have spoken in length on this podcast about DEWS, electronic mind control, and how these advanced technologies are being used to target individuals – also known as ‘targeted individuals' or ‘TI's' – but what most other interviews featuring Eric haven't touched much on are his experiences as a child having been sold into the CIA's Stargate and MK ULTRA projects. I was really thrilled when Eric agreed to come shine a light on this part of his testimony today, and how his childhood experiences may add context to the path he took as an adult and the things he saw and experienced in Antarctica. We know from listening to survivor testimonies on this show that there are very little coincidences in a survivor's life and that much of their life has been engineered and manufactured to fulfill different roles and duties in society – unbeknownst to them. I believe that Eric's full disclosure of what he went through as a child will really bring validity and insight as to how and why he ended up in Antarctica as a contractor for Raytheon to begin with. For context on Stargate Project - if you are new here - and according to Wikipedia: “The Stargate Project was a secret US Army unit established in 1977 at Fort Meade, Maryland, by the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) and SRI International – which, if you guys remember, we have had 3 Stanford Research Institute (AKA SRI) survivors on this podcast - to investigate the potential for psychic phenomena in military and domestic intelligence applications. The Stargate Project's work primarily involved remote viewing and the purported ability to psychically "see" events, sites, or information from a great distance.” Eric comes to us today to disclose and share some of the most vulnerable moments of his life out of a personal and moral obligation to shine a light on the darkness that exists in the world that is all but hidden from the general public. While there appears to be a concerted effort to control the mainstream disclosure movement, it will be heroes like Eric who help us break through the controlled narrative by connecting public disclosures of all kinds to child behavior modification programs and government-sponsored child slavery – something very few have the courage to do. It's the piece that is missing from most disclosure movements. Eric is extremely passionate about helping to bring awareness to organized child abuse and crimes being committed against innocent children through our government and governments all over the world, and he is one of the few whistleblowers that was asked to give testimony for both the Senate Intelligence Committee and AARO. His shared testimony will be getting entered into the National Archives.CONNECT WITH ERIC: Website: Home - Deciphering My ExperienceSupport the show

When Joff Summerfield set out to ride around the globe on his handmade penny farthing in 2006, he sold absolutely everything he owned to fund the adventure – and start with a clean slate. As he set off, his whole world was packed into a small rucksack on his back and some panniers on top of his penny farthing.Joff's story is one of the most stunning that Rob and Eliot have discovered on Just Ride so far. Most of it must be heard to be believed! From being robbed at knifepoint in Ecuador and accidentally eating dinner in a Chinese home, to freewheeling down the Himalayas and taking in the Millennium New Year in Paris, Joff's journeys have been like no other. And that's all while rolling round the world on a 49in fixed-gear penny farthing. His current steed has done nearly 40,000 miles. As you can imagine, Rob and Eliot couldn't get their heads around it.As well as his physical feats, Joff also has a refreshing outlook on life – never travelled but want to? Do it! You'll find a way. If you want to watch this full-length episode with Joff (and his penny farthing!) then you can find it on Red Bull TV, and if you want to email the show then please hit us up at podcast@redbull.com.If you want to learn more about Joff and his exploits, you can check out his YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/user/joff1000 And follow Joff on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/joff_summerfield/?hl=enWe'll see you in two weeks.

This week we are chatting with adventurer Valerie Gagne about her very first solo expedition circumnavigating the Eye of Quebec!! A few weeks ago Val skied 180kms over 6 days around the frozen Eye in the middle of winter. She battled slushy ice, isolation and extremely cold weather before ultimately finishing the challenge! In this episode we talk about the reasons why Val wanted to take this on, the differences between a solo expedition and one with partners, and the obstacles she faced over these six days and how she overcame them. This is an awesome conversation!! I hope you enjoy! In this episode we speak with Laura Massey-Pugh, one half of the team that recently set a Guinness World Record by cycling 18,000 miles on a tandem bicycle in 179 days and 12 hours. Stevie (Steven Massey) is a very experienced ultra-distance cyclist, completing his first 100+ mile ride at the ripe age of 11. In his racing days, he achieved 4th in the National 24 hour time trial championships (725km in 24 hours) and has finished London-Edinburgh-London, and Paris-Brest-Paris in the top 5%. He has and unofficial record of riding the length of the UK and back again (~2000 miles) unsupported in 9.5 days and has cycled over 250,000 miles in his lifetime, over half the distance to the moon. He was an accomplished tandem rider when he met Laura and encouraged her to take the stoker seat on his tandem.Laura (Laura Massey-Pugh) has ridden bicycles since a young age, commuting to school and work. Before she met Stevie, she had completed a 100 mile ride but it was he that introduced her to the world of ultra-distance cycling. She has completed Super Randonneur series (a 200km, 300km, 400km and 600km events) both on solo bicycle and tandem. She rides “stoker” on the tandem and despite popular opinion does not “have her feet up on the back” but is able to assist with navigation and nutrition as well as providing a rear-wheel drive function. She likes to mix her challenges up and prior to the record had trial run "coast to coast" of the UK and after completed an "Iron-distance" triathalon.Together as SteLa Tandem some of their achievements include completing the 1000km Mille Pennines Audax, Land's End to John O'Groats self supported on the tandem in 10 days and an epic 850 miles ride around the country of Wales in 8 days. They are the only tandem to finish All Points North, an ultra-cycling event. This all lead to their record breaking tandem ride around the world, covering over 18,000 miles in 180 days, self-supported on their tandem bicycle.Their book "Backseat Rider" is available on their website here: http://www.stelatandem.com You can find their YouTube channel (including podcasts) here:https://www.youtube.com/@stelatandem2702You can follow them on social media here:Twitter @SteLaTandemInstagram @SteLa_TandemFacebook @SteLa Tandem Round the World RecordEnjoy the conversation. The Nao Victoria, the first ship to circumnavigate the globe, arrived back to its starting point in Spain on 6th September, 1522, with one person notably missing: Ferdinand Magellan, the man who had initiated the audacious voyage. Through a mixture of hubris and misfortune Magellan had come to a rather sticky end just before reaching his intended destination of the Moluccas, otherwise known as the Indonesian Spice Islands. But even though the expedition – which Magellan had hoped would open a western route to Asia – was unsuccessful, its contribution to Europeans' understanding of the globe was immeasurable. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly look at the countless disasters, mutinies and impediments Magellan faced during his journey; discuss why the Spice Islands were so important to Europeans in the 16th century; and explain why you can never pack too much wine and hardtack when attempting to circumnavigate the globe… Further Reading: ‘A voyage from hell: how Magellan's circumnavigation of the world changed history' (History Extra, 2019): https://www.historyextra.com/period/tudor/how-magellan-circumnavigation-world-changed-history-what-was-voyage-like/ ‘Ferdinand Magellan' (History.com, 2023): https://www.history.com/topics/exploration/ferdinand-magellan ‘The greatest expeditions of mankind - Magellan and the space race' (DW Documentary; 2022): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5TP1k9z4ak #Europe #1900s #explorer #person #Spain #Portugal Love the show? I had the absolute pleasure of interviewing Lesa Ashford who recently set the female World Record as the fastest woman to circumnavigate Australia. Lesa set off on March 08 2023, from the Wheel in Brisbane, then connected 19 waypoints around mainland Australia with a total distance exceeding 14,000kms. 92 days, 6 hours and 33 mins later she arrived back in Brisbane, setting the official record as first female. Lesa discusses her motivaions to set off on this challenge, and the obstacles which she had to overcome. Flooding and cyclones which damaged infrastructure and roads threatened to derail her attempt, but with a display of grit and determination, Lesa didn't give up.It was evident that setting an official record not only takes a lot of training and dedication but also the assistance from an amazing support team and we talk about this in detail.Check out the details of the official record Lesa set.You can also read Lesa's account of her record breaking ride in more detail. Series: CrossRoads | January 02, 2022 | Scott McFarland Often people approach the Bible as a book of stories about other people. While that is true, the unique discovery is finding out that WE are a part of God's Story as described through the Scriptures. When Luke the doctor went to investigate Jesus, he became a part of Jesus' story. You will as well in this walk through Luke's Gospel. Watch for how YOU are also part of Jesus' story! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/journey-christian-church/message
In this episode, Alex circumnavigates the globe talking about a plethora of problematic trends related to the pandemic, January 6th, political tensions, and Kyle Rittenhouse. He discusses: An NPR article highlights a report that 80% of White-Tail Deer in the United States have either tested positive for COVID or have antibodies in their systems. Virologists at Penn State believe that the virus was passed to deer from humans and worry that deer could be a new reservoir for the virus. This means that even if the Hyman population reaches herd immunity, the virus could still mutate and jump back to humans from the deer population. This has also been seen in mink populations and describes a trend that worries virologists around the globe. Germany and Austria have seen a large spike in COVID hospitalizations that are putting ICU beds in a dire situation. This is a disturbing trend because cases were lower a year ago when the vaccine wasn't being rolled out. Both Germany and Austria are installing a policy known as G2. G2 stands for the German words for vaccination and recovery, meaning that if citizens in certain regions aren't either vaccinated or recovering from the virus, they must isolate themselves at home. Vaccination rates in Romania, Bulgaria, Latvia, and the majority of the Balkan states are lagging WAY behind the rest of Europe. This isn't due to a lack of vaccine accessibility, it seems like institution distrust in these countries is quite high. Evan Neumann, an American who is wanted by the FBI on charges that he assaulted police officers on January 6th, has fled America based on advice from his attorney. After traveling and evading arrest in Europe, he has landed in Belarus and is trying to claim political asylum in maybe one of the worst places for political asylum seekers. He claims to be persecuted for his political beliefs and is ironically in a country where the government isn't friendly towards political dissent. The jury is now deliberating the case of Kyle Rittenhouse in Wisconsin. The left has called Rittenhouse a vigilante, who caused more violence than he prevented. Conversely, the right sees him as a folk hero that stood up against the civil unrest caused by the progressive agitators. Alex feels that Kyle will be acquitted but it tells us more than we need to know about the current political energy in the United States.
All aboard the Time Machine with Trish and Mike! It is that time again folks for your weekly dose of historical fun! This week's episode has us taking all kinds of twists and turns as we start our adventure through time at Coney Island. We head on over to Ottawa to investigate a very unique corner-less building designed by Metis Douglas Cardinal before sailing around the world with the first man (and Canadian to boot!) to circumnavigate the globe. His mysterious death left many questions. Our last story also left people puzzling but in regards to a different kind of uncivilized circumnavigation. Don't forget to join us next week for a very special episode where we celebrate our nation's birthdays! Have questions about Canada or the USA? Drop us a line and we will include your query in our episode! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/timemachinewithtrishmike/message
Today on the show we are joined by Dustin Reynolds, otherwise known as "the single-handed sailor." Dustin Reynolds is on track to be the first double amputee to circumnavigate the globe. After losing one of his arms and one of his legs in a tragic accident, Dustin shares with us how he rebuilt his life and risked it all on an incredible adventure. We talk identity, humanity and not giving up on yourself in this special episode of the show.
When are you going to tackle your bucket list? My guest today is Alan Worden, a serial entrepreneur focused on leisure-seeking Baby Boomers who founded Scout Real Estate Capital. For Alan, there came a time when he realized it may be now or never if he wanted to chase his dreams. In 1999, Alan asked 10 trusted friends and advisors for advice. He asked each if it was a good idea to drop prosperous careers and go sailing from the U.S. to New Zealand with his wife. Independently, each of them said “If you can do it, do it now. It's never going to get any easier.” That was in 1999. Soon after that, Worden spent exactly 365 days sailing to New Zealand in an Everest-sized adventure you'll love to hear about. (Including a brush with death I won't spoil for you.) He spent all that time and most of his money to make it happen. For him, it was as much about conquering fear as it was about a bucket list item to cross off. See, Alan's biggest fear is the ocean. And he crossed 18,000 miles of it in his “do it now” year. The lessons he learned on that sailboat have carried him to new heights in life and in this episode you'll learn just what they are. If you think you could make your dreams happen and something is holding you back, this episode is for you. If you have trouble facing your fears but want to get better at it, listen to this conversation with Alan. And if you just want to hear about a real-life adventure that changed one life for the better, click play in the player above to get started. In this episode, hear from Alan Worden how to ‘do it now' and more: Why the most influential family members aren't who you think. The critical difference between research and “need-search” A stunning piece of advice that came from an unlikely source. What will make the world care about your business. The paradigm shift that put Alan's life in high gear. Why you should be OK with sucking at some things. Meditation for cynics. The thing you might think that constitutes “the height of arrogance.” How to make your “worry quotient” go down—and fast. Why 95 percent of what you fear shouldn't scare you. Giving yourself a superpower.
