How can women lawyers raise their visibility on LInkedIn? This week's guest, Paula Price, is a podcaster, lawyer and coach who knows all about using LinkedIn strategically and authentically to raise profiles and build connections. PodcastEp 229 - LinkedIn for Lawyers with Paula Price Summary Podcast begins. 0:05 Get a head start on your LinkedIn activity this year by joining the LinkedIn mastermind starting in September 2023. Today's guest is lovely paula from canada. Introduction to Paul. 1:34 Paula is a lawyer turned coach for lawyers. She helps lawyers with all sorts of transitions and goals that they want to achieve. Her podcast, joyful practice for women lawyers. Louise wants people to know that there is help for them and that they are not alone if they are experiencing these types of challenges. How to raise your profile on LinkedIn. Why linkedin is a social platform. 5:24 LinkedIn is a social platform for connection and community. There are three reasons why people go to LinkedIn. LinkedIn is like going to an industry event or a networking event, and it is a virtual replication of real life interactions. The first thing to do if you want to be seen on LinkedIn is to see whose posts resonate with you and see what you would want to comment or like on. Paul gives an example of how a real-life example of this happened to him. How to share your expertise. 10:59 Sharing expertise, providing updates on new immigration laws, providing information about updates to workplace laws or developing new skills. Sharing industry- adjacent causes that come along, such as mental health during the pandemic, is a really relevant topic to post on LinkedIn. Raise your profile by figuring out why you're there in the first place and how you can share and showcase your expertise and offer value to people. Get in front of or in community with other lawyers who might be interested in your work. What are the pitfalls of linkedin? 16:21 Paula was at a local conference and a friend of hers was speaking at it. She posted pictures of her online. Paula shares some of the pitfalls people should avoid using LinkedIn. The first pitfall is posting too much about yourself, because it can make people feel inadequate. There is something about over posting, and it can happen. There is a fine line, and you probably don't want to overshare. Be careful if you're okay with that being part of your persona. How to deal with negative linkedin posts. 19:52 There are two examples of negative LinkedIn posts, one of which was a picture of a lady who looked like a model in the LinkedIn catalogue. People need to remember paula. LinkedIn is a professional platform, and putting forward a professional persona is important. Be mindful of the impact that you are having on other people. LinkedIn is not a dating site. Do lawyers need to be on linkedin all the time? 24:12 The importance of following up on the message that you're trying to send as you're talking about a holiday in Portugal. The difference between LinkedIn and Facebook. Louise gets asked if she is on LinkedIn all the time, and she says yes to things quickly, thinking them through, and trying to train herself to think them through. Louise has a consistent practice of posting on LinkedIn once a week, and a podcast once or twice a week. The algorithm of LinkedIn is part of who sees what, when, and so there is an effect that they see more of what he is doing on LinkedIn relative to how he is physically connecting with the interface of LinkedIn. Sometimes you might give up too soon and not respond quickly. How to be more organised. 29:57 Paula is more organised than Bob, and Paula thinks answering questions in the moment would be more efficient, but at the same time, it does feel like a lot of work. Paula finds it baffling that people will accept a connection request and not respond to the message at all. There is a disconnect between the virtual world and the real world. Louise went to a conference in the spring where she had the opportunity to meet people in person, and it was fascinating and lovely. The virtual world has a lot more information about how people are consuming their social media and what else is going on in that given moment versus real life. The oddest zoom call I ever had. 36:13 A year ago, paula had the oddest zoom call she ever had. It was a senior person in a globally recognised financial company, excited about LinkedIn training for everyone in his department. Good stories of women lawyers using LinkedIn to elevate their professional profile and help them in their career. Elisa Davies is a lawyer turned lawyer turned counselor. She does blog posts on her website and her blog posts. She often posts an article that is relevant to mental health in the workplace, specifically for lawyers. Erica Tate is a good friend of mine. She is a contractor. The power of social media. 41:36 Laura is the pink spoon. She writes beautiful articles about how to do legal writing right, how to deal with a situation where you don't have precedent that is on point. Sara Forte is a local lawyer who has a workplace law firm in surrey bc. She posts regularly. Beth Melford is not your average lawyer. She has a website with profiles of lawyers across Canada who are doing things differently. She posts posts about her own experience, her journey in law, and updates about the legal market. Gina Alexandra is a coach who has a long history with educating lawyers. The more you curate the connections that you have, the more interesting your LinkedIn feed becomes and the more you want to go and see what everyone's up to and what they're sharing. Louise has a group programme that she has started running and will be opening up another round in January. Linkedin Mastermind again. 49:09 Paula is kicking off her LinkedIn mastermind again because she missed it so much. She loves hosting a group of inspiring people. Sara Forte is a two-time cookbook author, award-winning food blogger at Sprouted Kitchen, co-creator of the Sprouted Kitchen Cooking Club, mom of two, and equal opportunity salad and brownie enthusiast living in Southern California. Sara’s food blog, Sprouted Kitchen, launched over a decade ago and has been an adventure Sara pursued with her wildly talented husband, Hugh, who is responsible for all of their food photography. Sara has worked at a grocery store, two farms, and has spent the last decade creating recipes for her blog, two cookbooks, and her weekly meal planning program, Sprouted Kitchen Cooking Club. Her intention is to make healthy-ish food that fits into that fits into the everyday life of families. She doesn’t subscribe to particular diets, or label foods as "good" or "bad." Her food philosophy is to try to eat mostly vegetables and listen to your body outside of that. Sara is authentically interested in the entire concept of wellness, including mental health, relationships, mindfulness, movement and eating well. To Sara, caring for ourselves and others with nourishing foods is a big piece of that “wellness” puzzle. She cooks for pleasure, to slow her mind down, and to foster relationships by gathering those she loves around the table. Knowing how food connects us, Sara and Hugh recently founded Sprouted Kitchen Cooking Club - a weekly meal planning subscription, that helps home cooks get dinner on the table by organizing their time at the market and in the kitchen, and offering recipes to prepare a handful of healthy-ish meals during the week. In this episode we discussed: Sara’s journey with starting her blog, Sprouted Kitchen, and how that led to two cookbooks and a meal planning service, the Sprouted Kitchen Cooking Club Why Sara cooks and how it connects her to herself, her food, her relationships and so much more Easy ideas for how to get started in the kitchen How to cook and meal plan with ease using Sprouted Kitchen Cooking Club Sara’s inspiration to start her weekly meal planning service to empowers members to put tasty, real food in their bodies and on the tables What wellness means to Sara Getting started with feeding children and ways to sneak vegetables in their diet Get Victoria’s FREE E-BOOK: The Holiday Survival Guide. Sara Forte is the creator of the award winning food blog Sprouted Kitchen, as well as the author of two cookbooks - James Beard nominee Sprouted Kitchen and Sprouted Kitchen Bowl + Spoon. She is based in Southern California. I first stumbled onto her blog some years ago and before I even tried any of her recipes I fell in love with her writing, and the way she wrote so truthfully about life stuff. In this episode we talk about her love of journal style writing, and how she writes more of the story of the “why” behind the food rather then “just about the tomato sauce”. I really loved her response to my “how do you move through a bad day” question where she talks about pivoting towards an action step to move out of it. She also shares her story on being self-employed as a creative, what it’s like being spouse, co-parent and creative partners with her husband, and we gush about why Trader Joe’s in so awesome. She tells us what she likes in her salads, some of her favorite people, places and things, and a lot more! Where to find Sara: Instagram Website This episode was audio produced by Aaron Moring. Theme music by Heather Maloney.
Get to Know Sara Forte from the Sprouted Kitchen Sara is a cookbook author and recipe developer located in Southern California. She works with her husband, Hugh, who does much of the photography and techie side of their successful food blog sproutedkitchen.com. Sara did not grow up in a cooking family. She taught herself in college while working at the organic farm on campus. Later, she went on to cook for multiple caterers, restaurants, and practiced on friends in her off time. She is romanced by vegetables and seasonal foods – eating intuitively with a mostly Mediterranean diet. Hugh and Sara started food blogging in 2010 out of a desire to share what they were learning. They also felt passionate about encouraging a conversation around cooking and eating at home. They where quickly recognized in the wellness space for beautiful imagery and practical recipes. They’ve received recognition from magazines like Sunset, Better Homes and Gardens, In Style, Everyday with Rachel Ray, Oprah and Martha Stewart. Their latest project: Cooking Club is an innovative and convenient meal planning, shopping, and prepping tool. When Sara isn’t busy raising her two young kids and working on Cooking Club, she’s probably working freelance or as a personal chef. It was an absolute joy speaking with Sara and hearing all about her journey to becoming a successful food blogger. Her style is warm, inviting, and wholesome. In this interview, she shares about the whirlwind of publishing 2 cookbooks, having a family, and how her husband actually gifted her the blog. Listen in and be inspired. Sara Forte discovered a love for whole foods when she volunteered at an organic farm while working towards her English degree at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. This interest led to an internship in Italy at a bed and breakfast/cooking school, jobs at a few different markets, and eventually to creating a food blog, Sprouted Kitchen, that she produces with her husband Hugh. Sara writes recipes and stories about life while Hugh documents the couple's whole food approach to eating well. Sara has written two cookbooks, The Sprouted Kitchen, which was nominated for a James Beard in the Healthy Cookbooks Category, and Sprouted Kitchen: Bowl + Spoon. Sara's work is featured in InStyle, Better Home & Gardens, Sunset and Fine Cooking. The blog has been recognized by Saveur for Best Food Photography and Best Food Blog. Sara continues to work on a third book; she freelances in recipe development; and she is a personal chef and mother of two toddlers. Sara and Hugh currently live in Dana Point, California: working, eating and inspiring people to cook fresh, real food. Hugh Forte is a self-taught photographer – an endeavor that was born from traveling and wanting to document the life playing out around him. While Hugh focuses most of his energy on wedding and lifestyle commissions, he created Sprouted Kitchen as a gift to Sara, for them to have a creative outlet together – her cooking and him documenting - and has since begun to experiment with a fresh approach to the art of food photography. With an aesthetic inspired largely by the natural beauty of the subject, his talent is perfectly paired with Sara’s cooking style. Hugh’s work has been recognized by the Smithsonian, Photo District News and Conde Nast. While photography is both his profession and passion, Hugh’s time is also invested in great books, fun waves, and the pursuit of a really good cup of coffee.
