Northridge Church Messages

People like to say everyone deserves a second chance, but we live in a world where we cancel people instead of offering them grace. When we blow it, when we hurt our family, destroy our friendships, and lose our job, is our life over? Are we condemned to a pitiful and lonely life? Is there really any hope we can experience a second chance? That's what we'll explore in week 3 of our series Nineveh.

Tom welcomes Dave Bradshaw, a CPA, MBA, author, and business owner, to discuss his recently published book, "No Second Chances: A Family Guide to the College Decision and the Lasting Impact of Debt." The conversation revolved around the escalating college costs, questionable value of certain degrees, and the burdensome student loan debts many students now face. Dave shared insights on how college has evolved from his childhood days, no longer promising a guaranteed path to financial success for numerous graduates. He stressed the significance of families considering the real costs of attending college, including the potential long-term impact of student loans on their children's future financial wellbeing. They addressed the skewed incentives in the system, such as government involvement in student loans and the absence of price discovery in the market for higher education. Dave was inspired to write the book after observing a friend's aspiration to become a veterinarian and the immense financial burden that choice would impose on her. Dave highlights the importance of understanding the split between education costs and interest paid on loans. He advocates for students to weigh their future earning potential against taking on large student loan debts and criticized the lack of transparency surrounding college costs and financial aid. They question the distortion in the education system due to government intervention in student loan industries, arguing that without price discovery, certain degrees and disciplines were either overvalued or undervalued. They pointed out examples such as nursing and veterinary medicine, where the value proposition was clear versus fields like sociology where the value was less evident. The book serves as a practical guide for students and parents in making informed decisions about post-secondary education, with a workbook design that encourages self-reflection and dialogue between students and parents. It focuses on helping young people determine their purpose in life, considering what they want to learn, the job they aim for, and why they wish to attend college. Dave suggests several strategies for alleviating the financial burden of higher education, such as living at home to cut costs in half, scholarships, tuition reimbursement programs from employers, having a job during college, and considering community colleges as an affordable alternative for the first two years. Families need to consider real costs and long-term impact. Government intervention in student loans distorts education market, leading to overvalued or undervalued degrees and policies preventing bankruptcy discharge. Strategies for reducing financial burden include living at home, scholarships, employer tuition reimbursement, part-time jobs, and considering community colleges. If God's eternal judgment is coming upon our world, and the Lord Jesus Christ is mankind's only hope for salvation, the question is: Does there exist any secondary chance for forgiveness and eternal life for anyone who is never united to Christ in faith during their lifetime or dies with the guilt of some sin still on their record?  This episode carefully answers this question and evaluates the most common doctrinal assertions that curiously claim the answer is yes.  Scripture referenced: Genesis 1-3, Exodus 34:6-7, 1 Kings 18:17-30, Psalm 95:7-11, Isaiah 8:11-19, Isaiah 13:6-13, Isaiah 53:5, Jeremiah 7:18-20, 30-33, Jeremiah 19:4-5, Jeremiah 32:31-35, Matthew 7:13-14, Matthew 13:47-50, Matthew 24:4-14, 35-44, Matthew 25:31-34, 41, 46, Matthew 26:57-68, Matthew 27:20-23, Luke 1:15, Luke 16:19-31, Luke 23:43, John 3:3-10, John 5:28-29, John 8:24, John 10:7-9, 19-20, John 14:6, John 15:16, John 19:30, Acts 4:11-12, Acts 17:24-26, Acts 19:21-34, Romans 1:16-17, Romans 3:22-25, Romans 5:1-2, Romans 5:18, 1 Corinthians 3:11-15, Ephesians 2:1-10, Philippians 1:21-23, Philippians 3:1-11, 20-21, 1 Thessalonians 5:1-3, 2 Thessalonians 1:5-10, Hebrews 3:7-19, Hebrews 4:1-7, Hebrews 7:25, Hebrews 9:27, Hebrews 10:11-18, Hebrews 11:1, 2 Peter 3:7-12, Revelation 6:15-17.  Other sources referenced: Catholic Apocrypha; 2 Maccabees 12:39-46, Catechism of the Catholic Church; Article 12; Section 3; 1030-1032, catholicculture.org, catholic.com, catholiccompany.com, newadvent.org, Wikipedia.org

As John finishes writing the Book of Revelation, he reminds us of at least four responsibilities that we have as believers. First, we are told that we must “keep His Word.” In verse 10, John was told, “Do not seal the words of the prophecy of this book…”. In other words, don't keep this revelation of end time events just for yourself, but share it with the world so that others can also find hope and be encouraged. Second, we are to be obedient servants. In verse 12, Jesus says that He is coming and that His “reward is with Him and He will give to every one according to his work.” When Jesus returns, He should find us both watching and working! Remember what we said already about the Judgment Seat of Christ and how the rewards we will be given there will determine our position of serving and ruling with Christ in His kingdom and for eternity. Third, we should keep our lives clean. Notice the contrast between verse 14 and 15. In verse 14, because we are obediently keeping the Word and doing His commandments, as proof of our salvation and love for the Lord Jesus Christ, we have “right to the tree of life and can enter the holy heavenly city.” We are given this right by receiving and believing in the Lord Jesus Christ. In John 1:12 we read, “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:” But again, notice the contrast in verse 15. “But outside are dogs and sorcerers and sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and whoever loves and practices a lie.” Also go back to verse 11: “He who is unjust, let him be unjust still; he who is filthy, let him be filthy still; he who is righteous, let him be righteous still; he who is holy, let him be holy still." I believe that these verses are telling us that once you die and go into eternity, your destination is final. There will be no second chances or opportunities to be saved after you die. If you die in Christ with your sins forgiven, you will go into heaven and eternity clothed with righteousness and holiness of Jesus Christ. But if die without Christ, you will go into hell, and finally the lake of fire the same way you lived. For eternity you will be unjust and filthy. The lake of fire will be filled with liars, murderers, idolaters, sorcerers, and sexually immoral. Not only will it be a place of torment, it will be a place of hatred, greed, and deceit. You definitely don't want to go there. You either die in Christ or you died out of Christ! It is your choice now. And if we are followers of Jesus Christ we should keep our lives clean by daily confessing our sins (1 John 1:9), and pursuing holiness! Hebrews 12:14 “Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord:” Fourth, we should be expecting Jesus Christ to return at any time. Three times in this final chapter of the Bible, Jesus proclaims that He is coming quickly (Rev. 22:7, 12, 20). Even the apostles and saints in the first century believed in the immanent return of Jesus Christ and they were looking and waiting for Him. Let me close our chat today with some verses from 1 John 3:1-3: “Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.” My friend, if you are in Christ, you have the privilege of being called a child of God! One day when we see Jesus, we will be like Him! This is the “blessed hope”! And because of this we should keep ourselves pure! God bless!
