A Disney Renaissance ClassicJoin hosts Krissy Lenz and Nathan Blackwell with special guest Mandy Kaplan as they dive under the sea to explore Disney's animation breakthrough The Little Mermaid. This 1989 film marked the beginning of the Disney Renaissance and set the template for modern Disney princess stories with its memorable songs and colorful characters. The trio discusses how this film revolutionized Disney animation, introducing the now-standard "I Want" song with "Part of Your World" (which executives initially wanted to cut!). They explore how Ariel represented a new kind of Disney princess: rebellious, independent, and actively pursuing her dreams, even if those dreams involved marrying a handsome prince at sixteen. From Ursula's divine inspiration (literally—she was modeled after drag queen Divine) to the spectacular voice talents of Jodi Benson, Pat Carroll, and Buddy Hackett, the podcast examines what made this film so magical. They also hilariously point out the movie's scientific inaccuracies and questionable life lessons while acknowledging its undeniable charm and cultural impact.Key topics covered:How The Little Mermaid launched the Disney RenaissanceThe groundbreaking songwriting and animation techniquesScientific inaccuracies that plague the underwater worldAriel's questionable decision-making as a lovestruck teenagerPerfect villain creation with Ursula the sea witchThe hidden Disney princess dress references in Ariel's pink gownVoice actor highlights, including Mandy's date with the voice of Prince Eric! The film's enduring legacy and influence on subsequent Disney filmsDeep cut recommendations including Robin Hood, Enchanted, and the Descendants franchiseWhether you're a Disney adult or just appreciate the film's artistic significance, this episode captures why The Little Mermaid continues to enchant audiences decades later. As Krissy notes, "Whatever the magic is, they've got it." So grab your dinglehopper, brush up on your seagull vocabulary, and remember to be excellent to each other! --We couldn't do this without your support of The Most Excellent 80s Movies Podcast! 2023 marks the 100th Anniversary of the Walt Disney Company, and part of that celebration is a touring exhibit that displays many items from the archives that made its way to Chicago this month. It's housed at the 35,000 square foot Exhibition Hub Art Center that will open to the public on Saturday, November 18th - also a special date as it marks the first appearance of Mickey Mouse in Steamboat Willie, back in 1928. The Little Mermaid is a literary fairy tale written by the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, first published in 1837 as part of a collection of fairy tales for children. The story follows the journey of a young mermaid who is willing to give up her life in the sea as a mermaid to gain a human soul.   The original story has been a subject of multiple analyses by scholars such as Jacob Bøggild and Pernille Heegaard, as well as the folklorist Maria Tatar. These analyses cover various aspects of the story, from interpreting the themes to discussing why Andersen chose to write a tragic story with a happy ending. It has been adapted to various media, including musical theatre, anime, ballet, opera, and film. There is also a statue portraying the mermaid in Copenhagen, Denmark, where the story was written and first published.   The Little Mermaid is a 1989 American animated musical fantasy film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and released by Walt Disney Pictures. The 28th Disney animated feature film, it is loosely based on the 1837 Danish fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen. The film was written and directed by John Musker and Ron Clements and produced by Musker and Howard Ashman, who also wrote the film's songs with Alan Menken. Menken also composed the film's score. Featuring the voices of Jodi Benson, Christopher Daniel Barnes, Pat Carroll, Samuel E. Wright, Jason Marin, Kenneth Mars, and Buddy Hackett, The Little Mermaid tells the story of a teenage mermaid princess named Ariel, who dreams of becoming human and falls in love with a human prince named Eric, which leads her to make a magic deal with the sea witch, Ursula, to become human and be with him.   The Little Mermaid was released to theaters on November 17, 1989, to critical acclaim, earning praise for the animation, music, and characters. It was also a commercial success, garnering $84 million at the domestic box office during its initial release, and $235 million in total lifetime gross worldwide. Along with the major success of both Disney's 1986 animated film The Great Mouse Detective  and the 1988 Disney/Amblin live-action/animated film Who Framed Roger Rabbit, The Little Mermaid is given credit for breathing life back into the art of Disney animated feature films after some films produced by Disney were struggling. It also marked the start of the era known as the Disney Renaissance. The film won two Academy Awards for Best Original Score and Best Original Song ("Under the Sea").   Opening Credits; Introduction (1.19); Background History (14.13); The Little Mermaid Plot Synopsis (15.17); Book Thoughts (21.47); Introducing a Film (58.50); The Little Mermaid (1989) Film Trailer (1:02.28); Lights, Camera, Action (1:03.49); How Many Stars (1:50.42); End Credits (1:52.10); Closing Credits (1:53.48)   Opening Credits– Epidemic Sound – Copyright . Ellie walks with us down memory lane as we visit some powerful episodes with guests who speak to God's never stopping, never giving up, unbreaking, always and forever love; including Amy Grant, Bishop Michael Curry, Jodi Benson, Michelle Hord, Aarti Sequeira, and the late and beloved pastor and writer, Tim Keller.    Quotes “Isn't it so beautiful to learn and to rest in the knowledge that we are all part of God's story?”  – Ellie Holcomb “When I walk into a situation and I want to be a part of it, I ask, ‘What do I already have?' I want to share what I have and I want to share it in a way of believing that a little bit can go a super long way in God's hands.” – Amy Grant  “Love makes room and space for others to be. Because that's what love does.” – Bishop Michael Curry “This verse just spoke to my heart and spirit, and I truly believe it was God throwing me a lifeline: Job 13:15, ‘Though He slay me, yet will, I trust Him.' This verse became a battle cry for me.” – Michelle Hord “What I always wanted was that my relationship with God would be so real that it would just leak out of me… I think God has done that. I can't talk about hardly anything without talking about what God thinks about it.” – Aarti Sequeira  “God can do extraordinary things through ordinary people who obey Him. If you can walk in obedience in something that's terribly uncomfortable, then let Him take it from there.” – Jodi Benson “If you are a Christian, you know that your relationship with God is impossible unless God forgives you. He doesn't make you repay your debt because your debt is far more than you could pay. And it's also true that if you do know you're forgiven by God, then you turn to other people who owe you, who have wronged you, and you're able to forgive them.” – Tim Keller   Guest's Links Ellie Holcomb's Facebook Ellie Holcomb's Instagram Ellie Holcomb's Twitter Ellie Holcomb's Website   Resources Mentioned in This Episode Amy Grant's Episode Part 1 Amy Grant's Episode Part 2  Bishop Michael Curry's Episode Jodi Benson's Episode Aarti Sequeira's Episode Michelle Hord's Episode Tim Keller's Episode   Connect with Sally Lloyd-Jones Jesus Storybook Bible Facebook Jesus Storybook Bible Instagram  Sally's website Sally's Facebook Sally's Instagram   *Episode produced by Four Eyes Media*

The Little Mermaid was released in 1989. It is a captivating animated musical that continues to enchant audiences of all ages. Directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, this Disney masterpiece marked the renaissance of the studio's animated films, ushering in a new era of storytelling and unforgettable characters. The film takes us on a magical underwater journey to the depths of the ocean, where we meet Ariel, a curious and spirited young mermaid with an insatiable longing for life on land. Voiced by the talented Jodi Benson, Ariel's character embodies innocence, independence, and a yearning for adventure that resonates with viewers even today. The storyline is based on the timeless fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen and successfully infuses it with Disney's signature charm and whimsy. The narrative strikes a perfect balance between lightheartedness and emotional depth, exploring themes of sacrifice, self-discovery, and the power of true love. It captivates the audience from the opening scene and holds their attention until the very end. Plans for a remake of 1989's The Little Mermaid were confirmed in May 2016. In December 2017, Disney announced Marshall was being courted to direct the film. Bailey, Tremblay, Awkwafina, and the rest of the cast signed on between July to November 2019. After a delay by the COVID-19 pandemic, the filming ultimately took place primarily at Pinewood Studios in England and on the island of Sardinia, Italy, from January to July 2021. Composer Alan Menken, who worked on the original film's soundtrack, returned to compose the score and write new songs alongside Lin-Manuel Miranda, who serves as a producer with Platt, John DeLuca and Marshall. The film was released in the United States on May 26. Critics praised the performances of the cast and the musical sequences but criticized the visual effects and character designs. But which one is the best? This is the subject that Rachel and Jeremiah tackle on this week's episode of Mouse House Weekly. They compare plots, characters and music, giving each subject a score. At the end they tally up and find out which film is best.   Connect with Mouse House Weekly: Facebook community Twitter Instagram Golden Spiral Media Feedback Page

To say Broadway's Alli Mauzey (Kimberly Akimbo, Wicked, Cry-Baby, Hello Dolly) is a fan of Disneyland is a great understatement, and on this episode of "E-Ticket to Broadway," she and David discuss their mutual love of the OG Theme Park. Alli's family lived on the future site of Disneyland and shares incredible stories of her family meeting Walt Disney himself, and how her mother watched Disneyland being built. Disneyland was such a huge part of Alli's childhood--from meeting her friends after school at Snow White's Grotto and swing dancing at Carnation Plaza, to watching her sister perform in 'Fantasmic,' to tasting caviar for the very first time...at Club 33. A true Disney fan, Alli credits signing along to Jodi Benson on "The Little Mermaid" soundtrack with helping her find her voice, and still feels strongly connected to her family when she visits the Park. Besides her dream of singing "Part of Your World" at Disneyland, Alli shares her love of Peter Pan's Flight, "Frozen 2," & "Bambi," and how she must always get a giant pickle on Main Street USA (and sometimes a clam chowder bread bowl). She and David discuss the magic of the Disney Theme Parks, and also the final moment in "Kimberly Akimbo" which is such a testament to the power of the Disney Parks. Before they play "Screw Loose for Disney," Alli discusses who she would most like to go to Disneyland with: Glinda from "Wicked," Lenora from "Cry-Baby," or Pattie from "Kimberly Akimbo." Which part of the staging of "Kimberly Akimbo" reminds Alli of "Pirates of the Carribean?" Listen to find out! Just when we're getting comfortable, God shows up (in his impeccable timing!) to ask us to step toward something new and scary. That's certainly been the case for Jodi Benson, the original voice of Disney's The Little Mermaid. Jodi shares how her career soared to unexpected heights, and how she strives to be salt and light wherever she goes, even if it's in the pages of a book she never expected to write.   Quotes “God doesn't call us to be comfortable." - Jodi Benson  I'm like, ‘God, this is just this is not me.' And He's like, ‘You know what? I can do extraordinary things through ordinary people who obey me. And if you can walk in obedience in something that's terribly uncomfortable, then let me take it from there.'” - Jodi Benson  “It's been incredible, the fact that I have total freedom to be able to just be myself, that I can love other people well, and be light and salt, and use every opportunity that God gives me and every platform opportunity that He gives me to the best of my ability.” - Jodi Benson “The tough things we go through, we can use to comfort others with the same comfort that he gave us. That's when beauty comes from the ashes.” - Jodi Benson “God called me to do something out of my comfort zone, and it's very frightening and very scary. But there is a sense of indescribable peace, knowing that I did what he asked me to do, even though I didn't want to. Then I get to step back and let God do what he's going to do.” - Jodi Benson   Guest's Links Jodi Benson's Facebook Jodi Benson's Instagram Jodi Benson's Twitter Resources Mentioned in This Episode Part of My World by Jodi Benson The Little Mermaid The Walt Disney Company Snow White Sleeping Beauty Cinderella Thumbelina Toy Story II Toy Story III Connect with Sally Lloyd-JonesJesus Storybook Bible Facebook Jesus Storybook Bible Instagram  Sally's website Sally's Facebook Sally's Instagram *Episode produced by Four Eyes Media*

Book Vs. Movie: The Little MermaidThe Hans Christian Anderson Story Vs. the 1989 Disney ClassicThe Margos continue “Disney in December” with the all-time classic 1989 animated feature The Little Mermaid, which began as a fairy tale by Danish author Hans Christian Anderson in 1837. The film was responsible for bringing Disney studios back into animation leaders after decades of so-so films and losing top artists to rival companies. The original story is about a mermaid who lives in an underwater kingdom with her sisters, her father (a Mer-King), and her grandmother, who instructs her that when she is 15 years old, she can swim to the surface to see the world above. Her sisters (who are all older than her) can visit the land for only one day per year. The mermaid (who is never given a name) longs to visit more often and is obsessed with a statue of a human man on the ocean floor. When she finally rises, the Mermaid can see a man (a prince!) on shore, and she falls in love. As luck would have it, his ship wreaks, and she can save him from drowning. As she waits for him to wake up on the shore, a young woman from a nearby temple comes over. She is given credit for saving him, and the Little Mermaid becomes despondent. This is when we learn that mermaids can live up to 300 years undersea, and then they turn into sea foam--without a soul to go to heaven. The Little Mermaid visits a sea which tells her she will give her human legs if she trades with her beautiful voice. Mermaid makes this deal and goes to land. Unfortunately, her new legs feel like daggers as she walks, and the prince likes her well enough, but he loves the woman from the temple whom he thinks saved him from the shipwreck. The Little Mermaid is told by her sisters (who gave up their long hair to the sea witch to get the formula to bring her back underwater) if she visits the prince and his new bride on their honeymoon on a ship, she can stab him in the heart and she will become a mermaid again. Instead, she throws a knife into the water and becomes an “Air Fairy,” If she does good deeds for 300 years, she will go to heaven. The Disney version retells the tale with one of the best villains EVER--Ursula, voiced by the fabulous Pat Carroll and supposedly based partly on the late drag performer Divine. This mermaid is named Ariel, and Alan Menken's music and Howard Asman's lyrics are some of the most memorable in film history. (Try getting “Kiss the Girl” out of your head!) It made hundreds of millions at the box office, and little girls have been cosplaying Ariel for decades. She's not exactly a feminist icon--but the film is a delightful confection and the last of the handpainted Disney films. In this episode, we get into the history of the 1989 film and the children's fairy tale and discuss their differences. Then we choose which we each like better! This episode is sponsored by:Kensington Books and the Rebecca Zanetti novel You Can Hide. Set up against the backdrop of the Pacific Northwest, FBI agent Laurel Snow strives to navigate her complicated family life when her newly discovered sociopathic half-sister becomes the target of a dangerous killer. The Blacklist meets The Profiler meets Justified is how it is described as laurel believes her sister (Abigail) was behind the mysterious disappearance of their father. Abigail shows up to claim someone is out to kill her, and then dead bodies turn up in the icy Sauk River--her sister seems to be the only connection. This book has romance (in the form of Fish and Wildlife Captain Huck Rivers), action, family drama, suspense, and thrills. Connection is one of the most important components to having a satisfying and full life. Connection to our family, our friends, through our work, and what we bring to others in the world has the effect of making us feel like we are a part of something bigger than ourselves. Since God created us for connection, it is His desire that we connect with Him too. In Jeremiah 29:12, God beckons us to connect with Him simply because when we do, we can know that He hears us—and knowing that God's ears are always open to us is the bedrock from which we can move forward confidently in life.   Our guests this week have made it their life's purpose to connect with others in important ways—and recognize their desire for connection comes from their own connection to God. Jodi Benson is best known as the voice actor of Ariel in The Little Mermaid. She has had the honor and privilege of creating a character that has been known by several generations of parents and children, building connection to millions through her artistry. Deb Liu is a second generation Chinese immigrant. Connection with a community that was somewhat foreign to her when she was growing up was something Deb always longed for, which eventually she found when her family was embraced by their first real church home. She's stayed mindful of how to build those connections all throughout her career at places like Facebook and eBay and at her current position as the CEO of Ancestry.com.    Links, Products, and Resources Mentioned: Jesus Calling Podcast Jesus Calling Jesus Always Jesus Listens Past interview: Tim Atwood Upcoming interview: Ainsley Earhardt Jeremiah 29:12 NIV   Jodi Benson  Ariel in The Little Mermaid Disney Legend Millikin University Part of My World   Deb Liu CEO of Ancestry.com Boston Consulting Group Stanford Take Your Power Back   Interview Quotes: “Just to be able to feel like God had given me these gifts, and I just wanted to use them to the best ability that I could and be able to support myself and try to make a living doing this crazy business. So definitely God just really created the path very, very clearly for me.” - Jodi Benson “Divine orchestration is truly the key because we can have this plan in my mind, you know? I can have this, I'm seventeen years old and I'll have this plan. And my plan was just blown up because God's plan was a thousand times better.” - Jodi Benson  “That's very hard for a planner like me to not be able to have this big, huge picture. But honestly, if He did, He knew I couldn't handle it. I mean, if He showed me at seventeen or at twenty-one or at twenty-five things that were five years in advance, He knew I wouldn't be able to handle it. That's how gracious and loving and kind He is. So He gives me just enough that I can handle.” - Jodi Benson  “He can handle me in any way that I present myself to Him.” - Jodi Benson “If I get myself all wrapped up in the past or I get myself all wrapped up in tomorrow, I kind of lose what it is that He wants me to do today. So I try to keep it simple.” - Jodi Benson “The work I do at Ancestry; it's really about connecting people with their own history. The work that we do is to really help people discover their own past, to discover new family members, discover something about themselves that they never knew. We're one human family and we're way more interconnected than you could ever imagine.” - Deb Liu “I think each moment you have in life is a choice. It's a choice to lift others up or to tear others down, to create value in the world or to consume value in the world.” - Deb Liu ________________________ Enjoy watching these additional videos from Jesus Calling YouTube channel! What comes to mind when you hear the word "catalyst"? A short cut? A dynamic experience? A transformative idea? The ancient roots of this word comes from a verb that means to unloose, to set free. Think of a horse hemmed in a barn stall. A catalyst would be an open door. This week, both of our guests today had dreams involving football. Both, however, had other gifts and talents they would see come to the fore, and realized that the disappointing situations and tough choices that happened to them while on the way to their dreams were catalysts for broader horizons with bigger pastures. Dr. Myron Rolle is a neurosurgeon who has traveled the world; making it a better place using primarily his gifts, as he puts it,  "from the neck up."  By choosing a path toward medicine, Myron's football dreams were cut short, but was able to see the wisdom in having his dream diverted. Inquiros "Inky" Johnson nearly died while playing football, but the spiritual mentoring he received during his years at the University of Tennessee set him on course to be a motivational speaker who uses his platform to travel the world and make it a better place, too.   Links, Products, and Resources Mentioned: Jesus Calling Podcast Jesus Calling Jesus Always Jesus Listens Past interview: Jason Brown Upcoming interview: Jodi Benson   Dr. Myron Rolle The 2% Way Proverbs 29 NIV Habitat for Humanity Princeton University  Senator Bill Bradley Rhodes Scholarship Bobby Bowden Luke 10:20 NIV Florida State  human mesenchymal stem cell research    Inquiros "Inky" Johnson University of Tennessee Fitzgerald Field brachial plexus James Mitchell www.inkyjohnson.com   Interview Quotes: “[Our family] had to stick together. We had to lean on each other, to lean on our relationship with Christ. And if we did that, then maybe success would follow.” - Dr. Myron Rolle "I'd be a student first, an athlete second, [but FSU promised] to grow me as a leader, as a Christian, as a man, and eventually as a role model." - Dr. Myron Rolle "One thing that Coach Bowden said was that he was excited about his players getting into the NFL. But he's more proud and more pressed to see all of his players' names written in the Lamb's Book of Life and joining him in heaven one day." - Dr. Myron Rolle "I knew that football had an expiration date. If I had my way, I would not have had it as early. But again, it worked out how it did. And it is a blessing to be able to be in this field now, waking up every day, doing surgery, helping patients in the hospital, teaching young medical students." - Dr. Myron Rolle “My junior year, the second game, 2006, September 9th, I went to make a routine tackle. It ended my career, and it changed my life forever. I thought I was in a bad dream. I didn't think my career would not only end that day, I didn't think I would be left with a paralyzed right arm and hand, from that day moving forward.” - Inquoris “Inky” Johnson “When I look back on it, God was preparing me all along before [my career ending] injury ever happened.” - Inquoris “Inky” Johnson  “I think one of the common mistakes we make as people is thinking where we meet people is where they've always been.” - Inquoris “Inky” Johnson  “Some of the greatest forms of growth happen in uncertain moments.” - Inquoris “Inky” Johnson  ________________________ Enjoy watching these additional videos from Jesus Calling YouTube channel! On today's episode, Sharon sits down with the voice of a generation: Jodi Benson, the performer who voiced Disney's Ariel in The Little Mermaid. Jodi was new to show business when she was cast as the voice of Ariel, and it wasn't considered a “career maker” job; animated films in the 1980s weren't wildly popular blockbusters like they are now. The Little Mermaid ushered in a new era of success for Disney, and for Jodi. Join us to hear about her journey, and learn which song was almost cut from the film!
