Last time we spoke about the Battle for South Sakhalin and the Kurile Islands. In August 1945, as Japan teetered on the edge of destruction following the atomic bombings, a desperate situation unfolded. The Soviet Union launched a sudden invasion of Manchuria, catching Japanese forces off guard. On August 14, Japan's decision to surrender was made, announced to the world the following day. However, the Kwantung Army resisted fiercely, engaging in frantic evacuations. In South Sakhalin, Japanese defenders clashed with advancing Soviet troops, facing overwhelming odds. By August 18, chaos reigned on the Japanese side, with forces surrendering and civilians in panic. As the Soviets pushed forward, the situation became increasingly dire for Japan. Despite valiant resistance, the imminent defeat became clear. In a moment of critical decision, Emperor Hirohito accepted the surrender terms, officially sealing Japan's fate and marking the end of the Pacific War. Japan has officially surrendered, however the Soviets are not done just yet. East asia is a delicious piece of cake, laid wide open and Stalin intends to take every piece he can grab before the curtain falls. Now as we last left off it was August 18, and General Yamada's Kwantung Army had surrendered to the Soviet forces led by Marshal Vasilevsky, who were advancing rapidly through Manchuria. Yet, some Japanese units, like those at Kalgan, continued to resist occupation until the month's end. On August 19, following Yamada's announcement that all military operations had ceased, a Soviet delegation arrived at Hsinking.  A daring operation took place, where a 225-strong detachment from the 6th Guards Motorized Rifle Brigade, part of the 5th Guards Tank Corps, was airlifted to the city's main airfield. This mission, along with others, was carried out under orders from Marshal Vasilevsky on August 18, following the commander's initial offer of surrender from the Kwantung Army. Vasilevsky's directive was urgent: “The Japanese resistance is broken, and the challenging road conditions hinder the swift advance of our main forces. We need to deploy specially formed, fast-moving, and well-equipped units to capture Changchun, Mukden, Jilin, and Harbin immediately. These units should remain flexible for future missions, regardless of their distance from the main forces.”The push to accelerate operations came directly from Stalin himself. In Kulichkin's biography of Marshal Vasilevsky, he recounts a pivotal phone call on August 15. Stalin was informed that the Japanese had “lost command and control” and were unable to mount a strong defense, with their forces divided into several fragmented groups. Vasilevsky confidently stated, “Even a miracle cannot save the Japanese from total defeat,” stressing the need to maintain the momentum of the offensive. Stalin's response was straightforward: “Good. We need to increase the pace. What proposals do you have?” Vasilevsky revealed plans to use airborne assault forces against larger cities like Harbin, Changchun, Jilin, and Mukden, alongside advanced mobile units across all combined arms armies. These units, consisting of tanks and assault guns, were fully equipped with desantniki, ready to engage firmly in the ongoing operations. The landing at Shenyang revealed a remarkable twist of fate. Waiting at the airfield for evacuation to Japan was none other than the recently abdicated Emperor Puyi of Manchukuo. On August 15, 1945, Puyi tuned in to the radio and listened to Emperor Hirohito's address announcing Japan's surrender. In this historic speech, the Showa Emperor referred to the Americans' use of a "most unusual and cruel bomb," which had just devastated Hiroshima and Nagasaki. For Puyi, this was the first revelation of the atomic bombings, information that the Japanese had conveniently withheld from him until that moment. The aircraft carrying Major Chelyshev's force, escorted by fighter planes, landed at 1:15 PM without any opposition and captured him. This small unit's survival hinged on remaining unchallenged, and they successfully secured the airfield. They also freed several Allied personnel held at the nearby Hoten prisoner-of-war camp. As soon as the landing was secured, additional reinforcements were airlifted in later that day, led by General Kravchenko, the commander of the 6th Guards Tank Army. He formally accepted the city's surrender, and the Soviets then transported Puyi to the Siberian town of Chita.  Meanwhile, Vasilevsky's ground offensive pressed on, mostly unopposed, though some resistance persisted. In the Transbaikal Front, Marshal Malinovsky's General Pliyev led his cavalry-mechanized units against the Japanese forces at Kalgan. Other units reached Jehol and accepted the surrender of the 108th Division. General Danilov's 17th Army secured the Shanhaiguan coast, while General Managarov's 53rd Army pushed towards Kailu. The main force of General Kravchenko's 6th Guards Tank Army regrouped at Tungliao and Kaitung, preparing to advance south toward Mukden. General Lyudnikov's 39th Army steadily approached Changchun, confronting the bypassed 107th Division, and General Luchinsky's 36th Army occupied Tsitsihar, accepting the surrender of the 136th Independent Mixed Brigade. At the same time, on General Purkayev's 2nd Far Eastern Front, General Teryokhin's 2nd Red Banner Army continued its siege of the Aihun fortified region. Meanwhile, a forward detachment moved slowly south through the Lesser Khinghan Mountains. General Mamonov's 15th Army began capturing and processing prisoners from the many retreating Japanese units after a successful amphibious assault secured Sansing. The Amur Flotilla supported the army's push towards Harbin, while General Pashkov's 5th Rifle Corps finally reached Poli, which had already been occupied by other Soviet units. In Marshal Meretskov's 1st Far Eastern Front, forward detachments of General Zakhvatayev's 35th Army began arriving at Linkou, focusing on the surrender of Japanese units in the area. Rear elements effectively eliminated the last traces of enemy resistance in the Hutou fortified area.  After a challenging struggle through the wetlands and the capture of Mishan on August 12, advanced detachments of the 35th Army's main force, the 66th and 363rd Rifle Divisions, continued their advance against minimal opposition. The situation was starkly different to their rear, where the 1056th Rifle Regiment of the 264th Rifle Division, supported by the heavily reinforced 109th Fortified Region, worked to dismantle the now-isolated Hutou fortified area. Despite the dire circumstances, the garrison refused to surrender. Thus, the focus shifted to systematically eliminating their defenses, which became a painstaking task. The attackers deployed an artillery destruction group, secured air supremacy, and utilized well-trained assault formations. Their techniques included pouring kerosene or gasoline into ventilation shafts of underground structures, sometimes in alarming quantities. For instance, two tonnes of gasoline were recorded being poured into a single installation before ignition was applied. Despite the brutal and methodical obliteration of their positions, the defenders continued to ignore orders to surrender. Notably, on August 18, a Japanese prisoner was sent under a flag of truce to inform those still holding out that the war was officially over; tragically, he was hacked to death by a sword-wielding officer. Ultimately, this stubbornness led to catastrophic consequences: about 3,000 defenders were killed, blasted and burned, before a small number finally capitulated. Additionally, advanced detachments of General Beloborodov's 1st Red Banner Army reached Shangzhi before continuing towards Harbin, and forward elements of General Krylov's 5th Army pushed on toward Jilin. General Chistyakov's 25th Army commenced disarming General Murakami's 3rd Army, while the 10th Mechanized Corps advanced rapidly westward, crossing the Laoilin Mountain passes to arrive at Tunhua by nightfall. Over in North Korea, the 335th Rifle Division successfully landed in Chongjin, as General Kabanov's Southern Defense Region prepared for an assault on Gensan. In South Sakhalin, despite the surrender of the 125th Regiment and ongoing negotiations with General Mineki's 88th Division, Soviet forces opted to proceed with the planned landing at Maoka. Consequently, Admiral Andreyev's Northern Pacific Flotilla departed from Sovetskaya Gavan in the morning, carrying the bulk of the 113th Rifle Brigade along with a battalion of marines for the long and challenging voyage to Maoka. On Shumshu Island, as General Gnechko's forces were landing their artillery to renew their assault, Japanese officers unexpectedly approached the Soviets under flags of truce, carrying a letter from General Tsutsumi proposing negotiations for surrender. Representatives from both sides began discussions, and by 6 PM, the 91st Division formally surrendered the garrisons of Shumshu, Paramushir, and Onekotan. On August 20, Gnechko dispatched a small detachment on six vessels to seize control of the airfield at Kataoka. However, as they crossed the Second Kuril Strait, batteries on both sides of the narrow waterway opened heavy fire on the Soviet ships, forcing them to withdraw. This breach of the surrender agreement sparked a renewed offensive at 1 PM, coordinated with air strikes. The bases at Kataoka and Kashiwabar were bombed by 61 aircraft, which dropped over 200 bombs, enabling ground troops to push forward up to six kilometers. It was not until General Tsutsumi intervened that the Soviets were assured the Japanese would indeed lay down their arms. Meanwhile, Andreyev's convoy arrived at Maoka harbor on the morning of August 20, successfully landing the first wave of marines amid heavy fog. They quickly spread out and secured the area while the second and third waves of infantry followed behind. By noon, the port area was secured, and the marines began advancing eastward into the city, supported by infantry on their flanks. Taken by surprise, the Japanese defenders were ultimately compelled to retreat, with the 113th Rifle Brigade pursuing them through the mountains to the villages of Futamata and Osaka. In Manchuria, between August 20 and 21, Vasilevsky's units continued their advance to occupy the region's main centers. Stalin urged for greater speed, fearing that any delay might prompt President Truman to order General MacArthur's air-naval assault forces to land there. Notably, Pliyev's first column successfully captured Kalgan, while his second column moved south toward Beijing, securing Gubeikou at the border. Located in one of the passes through the Great Wall, marking the border between Manchukuo and China, the town was garrisoned by Japanese units. These forces surrendered upon the approach of the Soviet troops, who then quickly advanced toward Beijing, about 100 kilometers away. Although not the former capital itself, this area was under the control of Chinese Communist forces known as the 8th Route Army, who aligned with the Soviets. Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek was acutely aware that any Japanese capitulation to the Communists in northern China would allow the latter to occupy vital territories, making their removal difficult. Consequently, he commanded the 8th Route Army not to accept any Japanese surrenders, insisting they only surrender to Nationalist forces, with dire punishments threatened for defiance. Adding to the complexity, the Soviet Union and China had signed the Sino-Soviet Treaty of Friendship and Alliance, discussed at Yalta, just six days earlier on August 14. This treaty promised mutual respect for sovereignty and non-interference in each other's internal affairs. The Soviets had also committed to providing “moral support and aid in military supplies and other material resources” exclusively to the National Government as the legitimate central authority of China. Thus, a significant political and military predicament loomed. However, the Soviets quickly extricated themselves from this situation when Malinovsky issued an order forbidding Pliyev's forces from crossing the border. As Pliyev recounted, his formations were poised just halfway between Chengde and Beijing, needing “only one 'leap' to the Chinese capital.” He noted, “I had to suspend the offensive and move north beyond the Great Wall.” Units from the 6th Guards Tank Army occupied both Changchun and Mukden, initiating a rail movement towards Port Arthur and Dairen. For those curious, at Pingfan and Changchun, General Shiro Ishii and the remaining personnel from Units 731 and 100 were captured by Soviet forces. In a tragic turn of events, all test subjects were murdered and cremated, while the Japanese attempted to destroy evidence of their facilities but were unable to do so in time. Following their capture, the Soviets launched an extensive campaign to uncover the secrets behind Units 731 and 100, leading to the Khabarovsk Trial. Its pretty gruesome stuff so big disclaimer there.' The Soviets arrived to Dairen on 24 August, although these places had surrendered to air-landed forces two days earlier. This was, no doubt, much to the relief of Stalin, as these were amongst the main locations where he most feared American intervention. Indeed, on the day of the landing he had told Vasilevsky to ‘keep in mind' the fact that any delay could mean ‘Truman will order General MacArthur to land his naval assault forces'. The long-resisting 135th Independent Mixed Brigade finally surrendered at Aihun, while advanced units of the 2nd Red Banner Army secured Nencheng and Peian before pushing towards Tsitsihar and Harbin. Forward detachments from the 15th and 1st Red Banner Armies also reached the already-occupied Harbin. Furthermore, advanced units of the 5th and 25th Armies arrived in Jilin to reinforce the air-landed detachment there. Additionally, units from the 88th Rifle Corps and the 10th Mechanized Corps began their southward movement into Korea, heading toward the 38th Parallel. In North Korea, Kabanov dispatched a marine battalion and other units, totaling around 2,000 men, to occupy the fortified port of Gensan on August 20. The following morning, the landing force arrived and disembarked without opposition. However, the Japanese garrison refused to surrender until orders from higher command were received. Meanwhile, Japanese troops began to peacefully surround the harbor area, while Soviet sailors and marines, in a similarly calm manner, took up their defensive positions. As Kabanov noted, “An incomprehensible situation arose, neither peace nor war. The enemy has numerical superiority, but he neither fights nor wants to capitulate.” Unsurprisingly, he added, “the night passed in suspense.” The surreal situation was resolved when Rear Admiral Hori Yugoro and Colonel Tado boarded the frigate EK-3 to meet with Captain Studenichnikov on the morning of August 22. During their discussions, they attempted to negotiate terms, but the Soviet captain issued a bold threat of an immediate large-scale air strike and the initiation of hostilities at the port unless they surrendered unconditionally. While the latter was likely an empty threat, the Japanese officers signed the surrender agreement nonetheless. The process of surrendering the garrison began that evening and continued until August 26. In total, the Soviets captured more than 7,000 officers and men, along with all their military equipment. Looking toward the northern Kuriles, Japanese forces on Shumshu finally began to lay down their weapons on the afternoon of August 22, as Gnechko's units spread out to secure the island. In Manchuria, airborne detachments were also landed at Dairen and Port Arthur to secure these key administrative centers before the Americans could take control. Vanguard units of the 6th Guards Tank Army arrived to reinforce them two days later. Meanwhile, in South Sakhalin, heavy fighting persisted at Futamata despite Mineki's ceasefire agreement on August 22. Soviet air strikes supported the ground forces when weather conditions allowed, and the Japanese finally surrendered by the nightfall of August 23. At the same time, Andreyev dispatched three marine battalions on a small convoy to capture Otomari. However, a fierce storm forced the flotilla to seek refuge in the port of Honto on the morning of August 24. Once the storm subsided that evening, the force left a company of marines to garrison the port and resumed their voyage to Otomari, arriving there on the morning of August 25, just as elements of the 113th Rifle Brigade reached the eastern outskirts of the city. By noon, the 88th Division surrendered, and the city was secured. Shortly after, the 214th Tank Brigade arrived at Toyohara to secure South Sakhalin's administrative center. Thus, the South Sakhalin operation concluded with nearly 18,320 Japanese soldiers taken prisoner. Yet, this wouldn't mark the end of operations for General Cheremisov's 16th Army. Stalin pushed for the 87th and 135th Rifle Brigades, along with three marine battalions, to assemble at Otomari and execute amphibious landings on the southern Kurile Islands, specifically, Etorofu, Shikotan, and Kunashiri, and the islets of the Habomai group. The failure to include the Kuril Islands in the areas designated for surrender to Soviet forces in Truman's General Order No. 1, originally issued on August 15, exacerbated Stalin's inherent suspicions regarding American intentions. Consequently, Vasilevsky was instructed to organize landings on the Kurils, ensuring that, similar to Port Arthur, Soviet occupation would manifest physically through boots on the ground. Despite Truman's subsequent correction of the omission, mistrust endured, as did the directive to occupy the islands. However, where Stalin hesitated was concerning Hokkaido. Truman's somewhat abrupt rejection of Stalin's demand for a portion of Hokkaido undoubtedly irritated the Soviet dictator, yet he chose not to take further action. Scholarly debates have arisen around the rationale behind Stalin's ‘retreat.' When viewed within the framework of his stated geostrategic goal of securing the Soviet Union's sea lines of communication in the Pacific, it becomes understandable. Churchill once likened the Soviet Union's challenges in this regard to those of a “giant with his nostrils pinched.” A look at the map reveals that control of the Kurils would significantly alleviate this pressure in the Far East, making their acquisition crucial. Similarly, occupying southern Sakhalin would allow the Soviet Union to control the northern side of the La Pérouse Strait, which connects the Sea of Japan to the Sea of Okhotsk. The strait's opposite shore is formed by the northern coast of Hokkaido, and possessing this area would undeniably enhance the security of communications and is therefore highly desirable. However, any unilateral action in this regard would incur a significant and public breach with the Americans, the consequences of which could not be easily predicted. Given that Stalin's claim to the Kurils was firmly based on the agreement reached at Yalta, an agreement which Truman honored, his choice to avoid completely rupturing relations with the U.S. was motivated by strategic self-interest. Consequently, Andreyev's flotilla, carrying these units, departed Otomari on August 27, reaching the west coast of Etorofu at 3:15 AM on August 28. The landing, conducted using small boats, went unopposed and was met by the surrender of General Ogawa's 89th Division. The occupation of the other islands was also peaceful, with the Soviets securing Kunashiri by September 2, and Shikotan and the Habomai islets by September 5. The remaining northern Kurile Islands surrendered without incident as elements of Gnechko's Kamchatka forces arrived at Paramushir on August 24, Onekotan and Shiashkotan on August 25, Matsuwa by August 26, Shimushiru on August 27, and Uruppu by August 29. In total, 63,840 prisoners were taken throughout the Kuriles. On August 24, air-landed detachments arrived at the cities of Pyongyang and Kange to secure the last administrative centers in North Korea. Two days later, units of the 25th Army reached Gensan. With this move, albeit with some geographical liberties, Chistyakov asserted that "the troops of the 25th Army, on the orders of Marshal Meretskov, reached the 38th Parallel.” In the days that followed, units of General Kushibuchi's 34th Army gradually began to surrender and disarm. Finally, in Manchuria, most of Yamada's units had surrendered and were being disarmed. However, one unit continued to resist until the end of the month. The bypassed and encircled 107th Division was engaged in fierce fighting for survival against the 94th Rifle Corps. Due to a lack of communication with Kwantung Army Headquarters, they did not receive any ceasefire orders. As a result, a staff officer from General Iida's 30th Army was dispatched by plane to locate the division and deliver the ceasefire orders. The 107th Division was found near Chalai, and the plane made a forced landing between the Japanese troops and the opposing Soviet forces. The staff officer successfully delivered the orders terminating hostilities in that sector on August 30, which the Japanese troops promptly complied with. By September 1, units of the 53rd Army occupied Kailu, Chaoyang, Fuhsin, and Gushanbeitseifu, while forward detachments secured the Chinchou area on the Liaotung Peninsula. This marked the conclusion of the Manchurian campaign, with the Soviets claiming to have captured between 594,000 and 609,000 prisoners of war across Inner Mongolia, Manchuria, and North Korea. The captured Japanese military personnel were subjected to forced labor in Siberian internment camps, as well as camps in Sakhalin, Manchuria, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Mongolia. A significant number were assigned to the construction of the Baikal-Amur Mainline. Unfortunately, the treatment of prisoners of war was deemed inhumane and mishandled. Many suffered from malnutrition, overwork, cave-ins, floods, unsanitary working conditions leading to epidemics, harsh winter weather, violent guards, and brutal suppression of even mild resistance. Disturbingly, some Japanese prisoners were even lynched by their fellow captives. Estimates suggest that between 60,000 and 347,000 Japanese died in captivity. Although 18,616 prisoners were released in 1946, the process of repatriating prisoners of war extended into the 1950s. Those who remained after 1950 were detained for various convictions. However, their release began in 1953 under different amnesties. Following Josef Stalin's death and the subsequent Khrushchev Thaw, the Soviet attitude toward the remaining Japanese prisoners shifted significantly. Accompanied by Soviet officials, they were taken on tours of cities and allowed to purchase gifts for their families. Before repatriation, a banquet in Khabarovsk, hosted by Nikolai Gagen, included high-ranking prisoners such as Jun Ushiroku as attendees. The last major group of 1,025 Japanese POWs was released on December 23, 1956. After that, some Japanese POWs were released in small groups, with some only returning in the 1990s following the collapse of the Soviet Union. Interestingly, some prisoners who had been held for decades, many of whom had married and started families during their captivity, chose not to return permanently to Japan. The Soviets committed numerous war crimes during their invasion and occupation of Manchuria and other Japanese territories. During the invasion, Soviet soldiers killed and raped Japanese civilians and looted civilian property. Following the Soviet invasion of Manchuria on August 9, 1945, a large number of Japanese citizens residing in the region sought to repatriate to Japan. The Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers supervised this mass movement and, in October 1945, delegated responsibility to Japan's Ministry of Health and Welfare. The Kwantung Army, which was meant to protect the Japanese settlers in Manchuria, quickly retreated and abandoned them. With most able-bodied men drafted into the army, the majority of those left behind were women, children, and the elderly, rendering them highly vulnerable to attacks from Soviet soldiers and local Chinese seeking revenge.In Soviet-occupied Manchuria and North Korea, the repatriation of Japanese civilians was characterized by violent expulsions, accompanied by widespread looting, mass killings, and rampant sexual violence perpetrated by both Soviet soldiers and local populations seeking retribution. Many Japanese civilians succumbed to starvation, disease, mass killings, and mass suicides. Approximately 223,000 Japanese civilians residing in the Soviet-occupied zones died, most within a year and a half after August 9, 1945. Regarding the extensive rape of Japanese women and girls by Soviet soldiers, a former Japanese soldier, Wakatsuki Yoshio, detailed these grim experiences in his memoir, The Records of Postwar Repatriation “What word can possibly describe the violence committed by the Soviet soldiers on Japanese women? I can only think of the word “hideous”. The victim could be a girl of twelve or thirteen years old or an old lady of almost seventy years old. These soldiers did not choose the sites where they raped them, in public, in broad daylight, even on snow-covered roads”. The Soviet invasion of Manchuria in 1945 left many Japanese women stranded after their male family members were either conscripted or killed. These women, including young girls, endured severe hardships, facing gang rapes by Soviet soldiers and local Chinese militia groups. In a desperate effort to survive, many were forced to marry Chinese men, either out of necessity or in exchange for assistance in repatriating their remaining family members. Disturbingly, some victims were as young as thirteen. Some women were held in groups and subjected to repeated sexual violence over extended periods. In certain instances, to ensure the safety of the group, members of the Japanese community offered women to their perpetrators. There were also reports of women voluntarily submitting themselves to protect their families, younger peers, or others in their communities. After Japan's defeat in 1945, leaders of the Kurokawa Settler Group in Manchuria offered approximately 15 young women, aged 17 to 21, to Soviet soldiers in exchange for protection. This tragic practice continued from September to November 1945, with some of the women later being offered to Chinese soldiers as well. With no protection from Japanese soldiers, Japanese women often had to devise unique strategies to avoid rape. Memoirs from female repatriates detail various escape tactics. Some women hid in attics every night, narrowly avoiding capture or even gunfire. Others managed to trap intruders in rooms before fleeing or bribed Soviet soldiers with valuables, such as wristwatches, to secure their escape. Notably, some women, particularly former geisha and bar workers, voluntarily went with Soviet soldiers to protect others. These women were referred to as tokkōtai (kamikaze) for their self-sacrifice. Additionally, it wasn't just Japanese women who suffered; Korean and Chinese women were also victims of sexual violence at the hands of various perpetrators in Manchuria. British and American reports indicate that Soviet Red Army troops looted and terrorized the local population in Shenyang, a city in Manchuria. A foreign witness described how Soviet troops, formerly stationed in Berlin, were permitted by the Soviet military to enter Shenyang for "three days of rape and pillage." In Harbin, Soviet forces ignored protests from leaders of the Chinese Communist Party regarding the widespread mass rape and looting committed by their troops. In the immediate aftermath of the war in 1945, in areas of Manchuria occupied by the National Revolutionary Army, 176 Koreans were killed, 1,866 were injured, 3,468 were detained, and 320 were raped by armed Chinese mobs. The attacks against Korean residents in Manchuria were believed to stem from a perception of Korean collaboration with Japanese colonial rule. One of the most infamous instances was the Gegenmiao massacre. On August 10 and 11, Xing'an was bombed, nearly destroying its urban functions. It is estimated that 3,000 of the 4,000 civilians. Anticipating the Soviet invasion, Xing'an had prepared an evacuation plan divided into three groups based on residential area and workplace. The Kwantung Army, however, failed to inform the General Office officials about their retreat. As a result, residents in the eastern area, many of whom were self-employed or office workers, had difficulty obtaining information and securing transportation, while those in the western area had military personnel who were first to learn of the situation. Some of the civilians with a handful of armed men had proceeded on foot towards Gegenmiao Township, about 35 kilometers southeast of Xing'an Street, to wait for a train at Gegenmiao Station and then evacuate to Baichengzi. They aimed to receive protection from the Kwantung Army in Baichengzi. Around 11:40 AM on August 14 in the vicinity of Gegenmyo Hill, where a Lamaist temple was located, they encountered an infantry unit consisting of 14 Soviet medium tanks and 20 trucks. The column reportedly stretched for two kilometers, with about a hundred survivors among them. Soviet troops launched an attack from the hilltop, deploying tanks with machine-gun fire. The tanks attacked multiple times, and when they ceased, Soviet soldiers disembarked and ruthlessly shot and bayoneted survivors. Many who escaped death from gunfire were still severely injured or witnessed family members being killed. Some were left holding their loved ones or chose to commit suicide. It is estimated that only about a hundred survivors were later confirmed, including nearly 200 schoolchildren from the Xing'an Street Zaiman National School. Kwantung Army units, which were supposed to escort the civilians and counterattack, had already retreated southward. Even after the Soviet soldiers left, sporadic gunfire continued, presumably due to suicides. Local residents began to plunder the bodies, stripping them of clothes and valuables. Others drowned in the river while attempting to escape. Reports tell of one woman who had her child killed by Soviet soldiers, only to later face an attack from Chinese militia, who stripped her of her clothes and mutilated her. Surviving mothers and children were also attacked, and those separated were often taken by the Chinese. At the time, it was common for Japanese boys to be sold for 300 yen and girls for 500 yen. Some survivors gathered together and began committing mass suicide, killing those who wished to end their lives. Others expressed intentions to form a death squad with rifles for revenge but ultimately did not resist.   After the war ended on August 15, attacks on displaced persons continued. A 12-year-old girl who joined a group of about ten women after the incident reported that they were attacked and robbed, taking over a week to reach Zhenxi Station, 10 kilometers from Gegenmiao Station. The women sought shelter in an abandoned house near the station but were discovered by Soviet soldiers that night who assaulted them until midnight. Afterward, the soldiers piled dry grass into the house, setting it ablaze in an attempt to burn the women alive. The girl and her sister managed to escape through a window, but many others could not flee in time due to the fire's rapid spread. The girl was forced to live as a residual orphan afterward. Fortunately, some Chinese, Mongolians, and Koreans provided food for the survivors, with some Chinese showing kindness towards the children. Those orphaned children, whose parents had been killed, became known as residual orphans, with about 30 in this unfortunate situation. Many women were forced to become residual women as well. Tragically, around 200 students from a local school, including the headmaster and his wife, were killed during this chaos. Some historians believe the attack stemmed from Soviet soldiers mistaking the refugees for armed Japanese troops because men within the group were carrying firearms for protection. In general, displaced persons at this time often carried small weapons like rifles, and some groups were even armed with light machine guns. In the pioneer groups, women sometimes participated in fighting against bandits, and in the Sado pioneer group incident, children above the fifth grade were forced into combat, regardless of gender. There may also have been prior skirmishes with other Japanese civilian groups before the war's end, further complicating the situation as the Soviet Army, which included female soldiers, may have regarded these mixed civilian and armed groups as a threat. According to Soviet military combat records, on August 14, the Soviet 17th Guards Rifle Division, 19th Guards Rifle Division, 91st Guards Rifle Division, and 61st Tank Division were stationed northwest of Gezhne Temple, but there was no combat activity in the area. On August 15, this unit advanced toward Bai Chengzi and occupied Bai Chengzi Station, which was then taken over by tanks from the 61st Tank Division. Despite extensive documentation, nothing about this incident was revealed until 2014 during the process of perestroika. Reports from British and American sources indicate that the 700,000 Soviet troops occupying Manchuria also terrorized and looted the local population in Mukden. They were not deterred by Soviet authorities and engaged in what was described as "three days of rape and pillage," with similar atrocities occurring in Harbin and across the country. Amid the mass repatriation of Japanese civilians living in the region, Japanese women in Manchuria faced repeated sexual violence at the hands of Russian soldiers every day. In North Korea, it was similarly reported that Soviet soldiers raped both Japanese and Korean women. Additionally, Soviet soldiers looted the property of Japanese, Chinese, and Koreans residing in Manchuria and North Korea. In October 2023, a 40-year-old man armed with semi-automatic rifle opened fire inside a bowling alley and later at a nearby restaurant in the small city of Lewiston, Maine. Between the two incidents, 18 people died and 13 were injured. Disturbingly, the Lewiston shooting was one for more than 650 mass shootings in the United States in 2023, defined as a shooting event with four or more victims. According to Zeteo, this makes Clark the 14th member of Congress to use the “g word.” Lest she be accused of bravery however, Clark quickly walked back her comments. In a statement to the Jewish News Syndicate, Clark said “last week, while attending an event in my district, I repeated the word ‘genocide' in response to a question…I want to be clear that I am not accusing Israel of genocide.” This incident illustrates the cross-cutting pressures facing Democratic Party leaders. This divide will be on the agenda again at the DNC meeting on August 26th, where among other issues, party leaders will vote on competing resolutions to lay out the Democrats' position on Gaza. Allison Minnerly, the progressive DNC delegate sponsoring the resolution to end arms shipments to Israel, is quoted saying “Our voters…are saying that they do not want U.S. dollars to enable further death and starvation anywhere across the world, particularly in Gaza…I don't think it should be a hard decision for us to say that clearly,” per the Intercept.* Even as Democrats wrestle with their position on Gaza, the politics are clearly shifting. The Reject AIPAC coalition has released a new statement saying that among Democrats, AIPAC is now a “toxic pariah.” As evidence of this, Reject AIPAC cites the fact that only 14 House Democrats attended the AIPAC-sponsored Israel trip this year. According to Mondoweiss, “In 2023, the lobbying group brought 24 House Dems to Israel over recess. In 2019, over 40 attended.” Reject AIPAC also cites the fact that Reps. Valerie Foushee and Maxine Dexter, both recipients of millions of AIPAC dollars, voted to block arms to Israel and Foushee is even now rejecting AIPAC money. As these small victories mount, the horizon of possibility for movement within the party grows ever wider.* Last week, Tom Artiom Alexandrovich – a senior department head in Israel's National Cyber Directorate – was arrested in a “multi-agency operation targeting child sex predators,” in Clark County, Nevada according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. According to Reuters, “Alexandrovich faces a felony charge of luring or attempting to lure a child or mentally ill person to commit a sex act ‘with use of computer technology.'” Yet, inexplicably, Alexandrovich was released by U.S. authorities and is back in Israel. This set off a firestorm in the U.S., with many accusing the Trump administration of facilitating Alexandrovich's release. The State Department was forced to issue a statement denying these claims, stating that Alexandrovich "did not claim diplomatic immunity and was released by a state judge…Any claims that the U.S. government intervened are false." The AP adds that the “Israeli Embassy in Washington and the Israeli Prime Minister's Office did not immediately return messages.” Disturbingly, the mainstream media seems to be purposely ignoring this case. While it has been covered by the Guardian, the Times of Israel, and Haaretz, there has been zero coverage in the New York Times or Washington Post, or ABC, NBC, or CBS. This media blackout adds fuel to the speculation that this case is being tamped down by the administration for political reasons.* Another troubling story regarding minors on the internet comes to us from Mark Zuckerberg's Meta AI. According to Reuters, internal documents from Meta Platforms detail “policies on chatbot behavior…[permitting] the company's artificial intelligence creations to ‘engage a child in conversations that are romantic or sensual,' generate false medical information and help users argue that Black people are ‘dumber than white people.'” Former Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan called these reports “disturbing” and cited a legal complaint filed by the FTC to the Justice Department against Snap in January, under her leadership, “charging that [Snap's] AI chatbot was creating risks and harms for young users.” Khan noted that the “DOJ hasn't filed the case or taken any steps to protect these kids,” and demanded that “Any lawmaker concerned about big tech's abuse of kids should ask what is going on.” The administration's lack of action on these issues indicates that despite their rhetorical inveighing against the tech industry, they are treating SIlicon Valley with the same kid gloves they use for the rest of corporate America, even when it affects minors.* In more positive news from abroad, the Washington Post reports that between 2022 and 2024, Mexico lifted a stunning 8.3 million residents out of poverty. This 18% drop in poverty includes a 23% decrease in extreme poverty and a 16% drop in moderate poverty. According to experts, this remarkable achievement is the result of the policies of former President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, or AMLO, and his successor Claudia Sheinbaum, such as tripling the minimum wage and instituting a raft of social programs to aid “senior citizens, unemployed youth, students, farmers and people with disabilities.” President Sheinbaum is now plowing ahead with a new project – producing a “small, 100% electric, accessible [EV],” called the “Olinia,” to be fully manufactured and assembled in Mexico, per Mexico News Daily.* Turning to domestic politics, Congresswoman Elise Stefanik finally showed up in her district on Monday after an extended period of avoiding public appearances. At a ceremony honoring a late Clinton County clerk in Plattsburgh, Stefanik was drowned out by cries of “‘You sold us out!', ‘Shame!', and ‘Unseal the Epstein files!', along with a “steady stream of boos,” according to the Daily Beast. Stefanik “left the podium after speaking for less than a minute,” and when she returned, she was booed again. Stefanik's chronic absence and chilly reception is a bad sign for her gubernatorial aspirations. In the months since she has held a town hall, her constituents held a mock town hall where they addressed an empty chair, per WRGB, and New York Democrats AOC and Paul Tonko held town halls in her district, per the Albany Times-Union.* In more political news from New York, disgraced former Governor Andrew Cuomo is explicitly seeking to woo New York Republicans in his independent bid for Mayor of New York City. POLITICO reports that at a fundraiser at media mogul Jimmy Finkelstein's Southampton estate, Cuomo told the crowd that he agrees with President Trump that the “goal is to stop Mamdani.” To this end, he is trying to convince Republicans that they would be “wasting [their] vote on [Curtis] Sliwa,” the Republican nominee for Mayor, “because he'll never be a serious candidate.” Cuomo also implied that he is open to an alliance with Trump, telling the crowd “Let's put it this way: I knew the president very well.” Dora Pekec, a spokesperson for the Zohran campaign, is quoted saying “Since he's too afraid to say it to New Yorkers' faces, we'll make it clear: Andrew Cuomo IS Donald Trump's choice for mayor.”* In Texas, state Democrats have returned to the state, ending their attempt to defeat Governor Abbott's mid-decade redistricting scheme by denying the legislature a quorum. In a statement Gene Wu, chairman of the Texas House Democratic Caucus, said "We killed the corrupt special session, withstood unprecedented surveillance and intimidation, and rallied Democrats nationwide to join this existential fight for fair representation — reshaping the entire 2026 landscape," per the BBC. The legislature is now expected to approve the redrawn congressional maps; the state Democrats plan to continue fighting them in the courts. California has vowed to redraw their own maps to compensate for the expected loss of five Democrat-held seats in Texas. New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire and Maryland are also considering their own redistricting plans. Vice President JD Vance was deployed to Indiana to pressure Republicans in that state to redraw their maps to favor Republicans as well, per the IndyStar. It is a sad state of affairs that American politics has been reduced to such naked power grabbing plots, but here we are.* In local news, the federal occupation of Washington, D.C. continues to deepen. CBS reports the governors of at least six Republican-led states are sending contingents from their National Guards to the capital. These include Mississippi and Louisiana, West Virginia, South Carolina, Ohio and Tennessee. Just what these troops will do in Washington remains unclear. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee, who is sending 160 troops, cited “monument security” and “traffic control” among their official responsibilities. The federal agents on the ground, with little to do – the DOJ itself reports as violent crime is at a 30-year low in the District – seem to be mostly just harassing residents. The Daily Beast reports ICE tore down a banner and replaced it with a dildo. A local, Amanda Moore, posted a photo of 15 federal agents calling an ambulance for a drunk girl in Dupont Circle. And, while the Lever reports D.C. corporate lobbyists pushed for the occupation, it is wreaking havoc on local businesses; Rolling Stone reports reservations at D.C. restaurants are down between 25 and 31%, to take just one example. We can only hope that this pointless, destructive farce of quasi-fascistic political theater ends sooner rather than later.* Finally, investigative reporter and Iraq war veteran Seth Harp is out with a new book – The Fort Bragg Cartel: Drug Trafficking and Murder in the Special Forces – which details the double murder of Master Sergeant Billy Lavigne and Chief Warrant Officer Timothy Dumas, along with the “many more unexplained deaths…other murders connected to drug trafficking in elite units, and dozens of fatal overdoses,” at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. Among other remarkable discoveries, Harp “describes a U.S. special forces k9 [unit] that was given titanium dentures and encouraged to feast on human brains in the field,” in the words of publisher and producer Chris Wade. The unpredictable, chronic nature of its symptoms demands nuanced solutions—something most workplaces lack. But change is on the horizon. On Nov 26, 2016, the Saturday after Thanksgiving, 18-year-old high school student Ben Keita was reported missing by his parents, Ibrahima and Aissata Keita. He apparently left his home in Lake Stevens, Washington State by himself, without his wallet, phone or car. Temperatures around that time were freezing, and his family was worried the cold could trigger problems for Ben's sickle cell anemia. Because Ben left his cell phone behind, the police were not able to get a precise location to begin their search, so they began by looking through a wide sweeping wooded area around the Keita home.  Experienced searchers, including a dog trained to detect human remains, were deployed. The search for Ben stretched on for days, and then to weeks. Six weeks passed with no sign of Ben. Then, on January 9, 2017, a group of teenagers wandering into the woods stumbled across an awful sight. About 12 to 14 feet from a trail, and about 10 feet from the nearest backyard fence was the body of Ben Keita. He was hanging from a rope strung over a tall branch in a densely wooded area just blocks from his home. Disturbingly, his body was found in an area that was previously searched multiple times in the days after his initial disappearance. One end of the rope was fashioned into a noose around Ben's neck; The other end was attached to a branch that was estimated to be 50 feet in the air. Ben's feet were 2 and a half feet off the ground. Incredibly his neck was not broken. His official cause of death was recorded as asphyxiation. Despite the odd circumstances, based on the fact there were no other evidence of trauma, the Snohomish County Medical Examiner determined the manner of death to be suicide. But Ben's parents immediately objected to this finding. His family said there was no reason to suspect anything was bothering Ben to the point that he would take his life. Ben was a young black man being raised in the Muslim faith. Medical and obstetric trauma are a reality for far too many, and symptoms of PTSD are often brushed off as “just part of the experience” instead of being acknowledged as trauma caused by medical mistreatment. This climate of dismissal causes many women to skip important screenings and healthcare visits, increasing their health risks.In this episode, I sit down with Leah Hazard, a midwife, activist, and author who, like me, has seen firsthand the impact of misleading language and inconsistent protocols on women's health.  I was a black child raised in a white supremacist cult. Growing up in the Worldwide Church of God, a doomsday cult with white supremacist beliefs, Walker's childhood was filled with fear. From a young age, he was indoctrinated to believe the end of the world was imminent, but even more disturbingly, he and his family—being Black—had to navigate the church's deeply embedded racial hierarchy. Despite this, Walker's family believed they were chosen for salvation, even though their church saw them as inherently inferior. This paradox reveals the powerful grip such organizations hold on their members, using fear and divine justification to maintain control. When the church's predictions of an impending apocalypse failed to materialize, Walker's world began to unravel, forcing him to question everything he had been taught.The story sheds light on the complexities of identity, particularly how race and religion intersect in environments steeped in white supremacy. Walker's family was segregated within their own church, with Black members relegated to separate spaces, not allowed to worship alongside white members. Disturbingly, the church's leader justified this segregation using Bible scripture, claiming that Black people were created to serve whites both on Earth and in heaven. This religious justification mirrored the same tactics used in the slave era when “slave Bibles” were doctored to omit passages about freedom and equality. Despite the blatant contradictions and racist doctrines, Walker's family remained loyal to the church—a testament to the power of indoctrination and the social pressures within such groups.The psychological manipulation within these environments is evident, as cult members often cling to their beliefs despite clear evidence to the contrary. As children, individuals are especially susceptible to believing what they are taught, no matter how harmful those teachings may be. The sense of belonging to a community, no matter how toxic, can also prevent people from leaving, as rejecting the group feels like rejecting their identity and their support system.Walker's journey from being trapped in this cult to finding his own voice as a writer is a story of courage and self-discovery. It reflects the challenges many people face when breaking away from authoritarian religious groups and highlights how deeply ingrained beliefs, especially those learned in childhood, can shape an individual's worldview. His story also forces a critical reflection on how religious institutions, particularly those steeped in racist ideologies, use fear, control, and manipulation to perpetuate harmful narratives. This Day in Legal History: Fugitive Slave Act SignedOn September 18, 1850, U.S. President Millard Fillmore signed the Fugitive Slave Act into law, a key and highly controversial component of the Compromise of 1850 and a dark moment in American history – unfortunately, one among many in the 19th century. The Act required that escaped slaves, even if they had reached free states, be captured and returned to their enslavers. It also imposed heavy penalties on anyone who aided a fugitive slave, including fines and imprisonment. Disturbingly, the law authorized federal marshals and local law enforcement to arrest individuals based on little more than a slaveholder's claim, placing free Black men and women at risk of being falsely accused and sold into slavery.The Fugitive Slave Act enraged abolitionists and free states in the North, who viewed the law as a gross infringement on their legal sovereignty and moral principles. Northern citizens were now legally obligated to participate in the enforcement of slavery, a practice many detested. Conversely, slaveholders in the South celebrated the law as a victory, seeing it as essential for the preservation of their economic system. This deepened the divide between North and South, escalating tensions that would eventually lead to the Civil War. The Act's passage not only exposed the fragility of compromises between pro-slavery and anti-slavery factions but also galvanized the abolitionist movement. It showed how far the federal government was willing to go to protect the institution of slavery, making resistance increasingly inevitable.In a piece I wrote for Forbes, I weighed in to a tax policy proposed by former President Donald Trump. Floated by Trump at a rally in Arizona, the "No Tax on Overtime" policy aims to eliminate income tax on overtime pay, echoing a previous proposal to end taxes on tips. While the policy is presented as a way to relieve tax burdens on hourly workers, a closer analysis reveals several potential issues. By creating a tax-free incentive for overtime, the policy could favor workers able to put in extra hours, leaving others—like working parents—disadvantaged. This could deepen income inequality, as those unable to work overtime would continue paying taxes on their standard wages, while others benefit from a lighter tax burden. Additionally, employers may shift compensation structures to push for longer working hours, leading to lower base wages and a culture of overwork. Implementation of the policy would also create administrative challenges for employers and the IRS. Instead of targeted tax breaks, broader reforms like increasing the federal minimum wage might better address wage inequities without distorting the labor market.‘No Tax On Overtime' Policy Would Be Even Worse Than ‘No Tax On Tips'In the first 10 days of Kamala Harris's presidential campaign, lawyers contributed more to her than they did to Donald Trump's campaign over nearly two years, according to Federal Election Commission (FEC) data. Harris received nearly $8.3 million from around 26,000 contributions from individuals listing "attorney" or "lawyer" as their occupation after Joe Biden endorsed her in July 2024. In comparison, Trump's campaign, which began in November 2022, raised about $6.88 million from lawyers over that entire period. Lawyers have historically favored Democratic candidates, with Harris's and Biden's campaigns together raising significantly more from the legal profession than Trump's campaign. In previous elections, Democratic candidates like Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Joe Biden have all received much more financial support from lawyers than their Republican counterparts. The data reflects a broader trend where large law firms and individual lawyers increasingly lean toward Democratic candidates.Lawyers Give More to Harris in 10 Days Than Trump in Entire RaceDonald Trump recently pledged to restore the state and local tax (SALT) deduction, a tax break he limited during his presidency as part of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. In a post on Truth Social, Trump promised to reverse the $10,000 cap on SALT deductions, which has disproportionately impacted residents in high-tax areas like New York, especially in suburban areas where property values are high. The cap was initially supported by Republicans as it helped balance tax cuts elsewhere in the law. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer criticized Trump's reversal, pointing out that Trump himself had imposed the cap. Repealing the limit could add an estimated $1.2 trillion to the cost of extending the tax law. These laws are often used to persecute Christians. The state of Uttar Pradesh in Northern India has the harshest version of the law. Over the last four years, the state has arrested 1,682 people under the Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act. Most of those people are Christians, including pastors. The arrests have led to over 800 charges.  However, International Christian Concern noted, “No one has been convicted under the anti-conversion law because there has never been a shred of hard evidence against the religious conversions.” According to Open Doors, India is the 11th most difficult country worldwide in which to be a Christian. British pro-lifer compensated $17,000 A Christian woman won a settlement against British police recently after praying silently outside an abortion mill, reports The Washington Times. West Midlands Police have arrested Isabel Vaughan-Spruce multiple times since 2022 for her prayers. Alliance Defending Freedom U.K. reports she won a settlement worth about $17,000.  However, the U.K. is considering a national implementation of censorship zones around abortion mills. Vaughan-Spruce warned, “Our culture is shifting towards a clamp down on viewpoint diversity, with Christian thought and prayer increasingly under threat of censorship.” U.S. Supreme Court rules against transgenderism Last Friday, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against the Biden administration's attempt to protect transgenderism. The Department of Education had issued new rules under Title IX which, as originally envisioned, prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex. The new regulations would have added protections for so-called “gender identity” and “sexual orientation.” Jonathan Scruggs with Alliance Defending Freedom said, “Female athletes, students, and teachers across the country are right to stand against the administration's adoption of extreme gender ideology, which would have devastating consequences for students, teachers, administrators, and families.” Biden: “America, I gave my best to you!” On Monday night, President Joe Biden summed up his career in politics at the end of his remarks at the 2024 Democratic Convention in Chicago. PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN: “America, I gave my best to you! [Cheering and Applause] “For 50 years, like many of you, I gave my heart and soul to our nation. And I have been blessed a million times in return with the support of the American people. I may have been too young to be in the Senate -- I wasn't 30 yet -- and too old to stay as president. [Laughter] “But I hope that you know, how grateful I am to all of you.” Planned Parenthood offers free abortion kill pills to DNC attendees The Democratic National Convention began on Monday in Chicago.  Disturbingly, Planned Parenthood has been offering free abortions to attendees at the venue. Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser said, “The Democratic National Abortion Convention puts the extremism of the Democrats on full display. The days when the Democrats insisted abortion should be ‘safe, legal and rare' are history.  “From ‘free' abortion drugs aboard the Planned Parenthood bus [to DNC attendees] to a draft party platform that uses the word abortion an unprecedented 13 times, today's Democrats under the Harris-Walz ticket are officially the Shout Your Abortion Party.” How Kamala Harris/Tim Walz ticket is radically pro-abortion Dannenfelser underscored how radical the Harris/Walz ticket is. She said, “Everyone should be asking Kamala Harris, Tim Walz, and all the Democrats' candidates the question: ‘What are your exceptions?' “Harris and Walz won't name a single limit on abortion they support – not in the seventh, eighth or ninth month of pregnancy when unborn babies clearly feel pain, and not even when a child is born alive following an abortion attempt. “They stand for eliminating the most basic protections for women and girls, such as informed consent and parental involvement, and seek to shut down alternatives to abortion.” Romans 3:15 and 18 says, “Their feet are swift to shed blood. … There is no fear of God before their eyes.” Fox reporter: Media doesn't challenge Kamala Harris In an appearance on FOX News with Sandra Smith, John Roberts made the case that the media is in the tank for Kamala Harris. JOHN ROBERTS: “The media is just basically letting Kamala Harris say anything she wants and not really challenging her.” SANDRA SMITH: “I'm still amazed that when you go to her campaign website of course the first thing you see is a request from for money for donations. That's fine, but then you travel throughout her website, there's still no policy pitches or explanations or details being offered to voters as to how she's gonna fix -- fix the problems that she's laying out in her speeches.” ROBERTS: “It used to be if you wanted to get a good sense of what the policy of the particular candidate was you would go to their website and would be all laid out there on a policy page in great detail. That page doesn't even exist on Kamala Harris's website.” SMITH: “Not there.” 8.5% of U.S. homes worth $1 million A report from Redfin found the share of U.S. homes worth at least $1 million is at a record high. Eight and a half percent of homes are now worth $1 million or more, up from about two percent in 2014.  Home prices have been rising, and luxury home prices have been rising even more. The median sale price of luxury homes rose nine percent on an annual basis during the second quarter of this year. California metropolitan areas are seeing the most increase in million-dollar homes.  Landscapers spot unexploded World War 2 bomb And finally, a pair of landscape gardeners were left shell-shocked after digging up an unexploded bomb from World War II, reports GoodNewsNetwork.org. Residents were evacuated from their homes in Worcester, England, while police and bomb squads rushed to the scene following the discovery by Paul Probert and James Dobson, who is not the Christian psychologist who shares the same name. Paul said he thought he had found a Coca-Cola bottle at first until they saw the shape. After James did a Google image search, he learned it was a World War 2 bomb. West Mercia Police used an Explosive Ordnance Disposal team who examined the device for hours and transported it safely away from the area to carry out a controlled explosion. Paul said, “We've found water pipes and electricity lines, but never a bomb. Pray for Zimbabwe, and considering helping at BarnabasAid.org.  Click on “Change Project” and type in “Zimbabwe” and select “Feeding in Zimbabwe.” Venezuelans continue protest against Nicolás Maduro Venezuelans are still protesting the re-election of autocrat President Nicolás Maduro — questioning the integrity of the vote count taken three weeks ago.  Over 2,400 protesters have been arrested — and, tragically, 23 have died in the protests. 52 countries lost freedom Freedom is disappearing around the world.   Freedom House's latest report on worldwide freedoms released in 2024, indicate a loss of freedoms in 52 countries, and a gain in 21 — for an overall loss in 31 nations of the world. The agency indicates a steady decline in freedom every year since 2006.   The organization explains that “Election manipulation was a major driver of declining freedom in 2023 and continued into the first half of this year.” But keep in mind that freedom comes through Jesus. In John 8:36, He said, “If the Son will make you free, you will be free indeed.” Montana Supreme Court calls parental notification unconstitutional The Montana Supreme Court has ruled that a parental notification law for minors considering an abortion is unconstitutional. The 2013 law has been in litigation for over a decade. The court's decision held that a minor's right to “kill her own baby” or, in the ruling's language, “control her reproductive decisions”  is “among the most fundamental of the rights she possesses.”  Only 35% of Evangelicals have Biblical worldview Only 10% of Americans are Evangelical, and only 35% of these possess a Biblical worldview, according to a recent survey by the Cultural Research Center and pollster George Barna.  According to Barna's description, Evangelicals are those who recognize their sinful lives, rely upon Jesus Christ for their redemption, and receive practical life guidance and wisdom from the Bible in their quest to live under the Lordship of Jesus. Disturbingly, 60% of people attending “Evangelical” churches have accepted the popular idea that animals, plants, water, and the wind all have a unique spirit. And almost half of the adults attending Evangelical churches, 44%, believe that there is no absolute moral truth.  Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton opened the DNC last night The Democratic National Convention opened last night in Chicago, with addresses from President Joe Biden and the 2016 Democrat nominee for president, Hillary Rodham Clinton.  Trump – 49%; Harris – 45% Among the most accurate and reliable polling organizations, Rasmussen Reports, has issued the results of a survey of the U.S. presidential race conducted last week.  Donald Trump is still ahead of Kamala Harris -- 49% to 45%. The results are similar to the Rasmussen survey conducted on July 10th — placing Trump ahead of Biden, 46% to 40%. Nasdaq's gains The Nasdaq Composite is regaining ground since its drop in early August — still enjoying a 36% gain from early in 2021. However, the Russell 2000 Index of small cap companies, which represents the rest of the American business world, has not gained any since January 2021.   The dominant forces in the market are still the Magnificent 7 stocks of Apple (AAPL), Alphabet (GOOGL, GOOG), Microsoft (MSFT), Amazon (AMZN), Meta (META), Tesla (TSLA), and Nvidia (NVDA). Those stocks continue to do well, rising from taking up 7.5% of the total S&P 500 capitalization to now around 34% of the total S&P capitalization in the U.S. stock market.  Phil Donahue dead at 88 Hebrews 9:27 says, “It is appointed once for man to die and after that the judgment.” Iconic TV talk show host Phil Donahue, who hosted the Phil Donahue Show from 1967-1996, is dead at 88 years of age after a long illness, reports NBC News. He was a life-long Catholic, and “not a very good one,” in his own words. Phil Donahue interviewed atheist Madalyn Murray O'Hair For 29 years, his daytime talk show pioneered an intriguing mix of serious topics, provocative guests, well-known celebrities, and questions from the audience members. In 1988, he interviewed atheist Madalyn Murray O'Hair. Listen to his introduction. DONAHUE:  “Mrs. O'Hair is probably the world's most famous atheist. She is certain that there is no God. Mrs. O'Hair, as you probably know, is singly responsible for one of the most controversial decisions in the history of the United States Supreme Court, the banning of the official reading of prayer in public schools.” Here's a soundbite from their dialogue. DONAHUE: “Now, this really bugs me, Madalyn.” O'HAIR: “I know it does.” DONAHUE: “See, you say, ‘I don't know how this all began.' And I say, ‘I want to know why, if you don't know how life began, how you're so certain there is no God.' To be consistent, I think you should say, ‘I don't know where life began, and I don't know if there's a God.' O'HAIR: “All right, let me finish it then, because, this is the thing. Since we don't know about this, since none of us know.” DONAHUE: “Know what?” O'HAIR: “How it began, or why, or when, or if it began at all. What we have to do is take all of the evidence. If we pile the evidence up, and all of the evidence of science -- and it's really massive -- is on one side, and on the other side is a book that we know, for the most part, when it was written and how it was written, etc. -- and this flies in the face of all of the other evidence, then you discard the book. You say, ‘It's no good.'” DONAHUE: “But discarding the book doesn't necessarily prove that there is no God. Let's talk about a higher being.” O'HAIR: ‘No, not a being.” DONAHUE: “What do you call it?” O'HAIR: “Some higher entity.” DONAHUE: “Alright, a higher entity. You are saying you don't know if there is one, aren't you?” O'HAIR: “That's right.” DONAHUE:  “That's not atheism. That's agnosticism.” (O'Hair giggles) Donahue was married to Margaret Cooney, his first wife, for 17 years with whom he had five children.  Then, Donahue married actress Marlo Thomas, his second wife, for 44 years. Dr. Stephen Bryen, a senior fellow at the Center for Security Policy, has over 50 years national security experience including many stints in the Pentagon where he became one of the world's leading experts on the arms trade. Brandon J. Weichert, author of The Shadow War: Iran's Quest for Supremacy is publisher of the Weichert Report and author of the soon to be published A Disaster of Our Own Making: How the West Lost Ukraine.   Some excerpts:   “The neoconservative, neoliberal cabal running Washington believe fully that they have to fight everywhere all the time to preserve America's unipolar standing and our hegemony in the world. But this quest for hegemony has led to the absolute destruction of America's post-Cold War primacy,” warns Weichert. “And if we are not careful, in the next six months, we will not only lose that primacy., but we may become like the declining Ottoman Empire or Austro-Hungarian Empire on our way out. We've overcommitted and overextended, and we're paying the price.” “NATO is flirting with war and extinction,” worries Bryen. “France is now "officially" sending troops to Ukraine and NATO countries are demanding strikes deep inside Russia.  Meanwhile the US has secretly made a "policy shift" that somewhat falls short of what Zelensky wanted, but opens the door to deep strikes by the US on Russian territory.” “It's very hard to see how NATO could defend Poland or the Czech Republic or Estonia. These are not easy countries to defend, and NATO doesn't have today the core countries of NATO, the French, the Germans, the British, it doesn't have the wherewithal to do it. It doesn't have the army or armed forces. It doesn't have the air defenses. It doesn't have the air forces, it doesn't have the tanks. It doesn't have anything sizable enough, and the ability to actually logistically move it to the battlefield.” “So the notion of NATO fighting a war, which is what French President Macron and all these clowns are essentially taunting the Russians with, is a very dangerous thing because it means that Europe could be enveloped in a war can't win.” “Russians have developed a pretty sizable air defense capability,” explains Bryen. “They have very good artillery capability. They have increasingly shown their capability with drones and drone warfare, none of which we're prepared for, and our best tank, the Abrams, which our only tank, we've put all our eggs in this one tank. The Abrams is a disaster.”   “The think tank community and the Biden Administration have a plan to contain Russia by rolling it back to its medieval borders, so that it's never again a threat to Europe and the West,” marvels Wiechert. “This is utterly fantastical thinking, this is childish thinking. Russia is not going to let it happen without a fight.” “Well, their plan not going to happen,” agrees Bryen. “The underlying error, and I think it was a huge error, was that we should confront a nuclear power, a significant nuclear power with the dismemberment. We were going to break up the Soviet Union, now Russia. We're going to dismember it, and we're going to sponsor the opposition in Russia, and somehow create this great transformation. But we're messing around with a nuclear power.”   “We've essentially forced the Russians into the arms of the Chinese through our policies, which was complete stupidity,” says Bryen. The neocons are very explicit the US must be the unchallenged superpower. In every place in the world, in every region, we must dominate.  This is the thinking that got us into the Middle East. This is the exact thinking that led us down the wrong path in Iraq and then the Arab spring. “They believed the notion that there was going to be only one superpower and it was going to be the United States,”reminds Bryen. “And since we were to be the only superpower we had to take on these responsibilities. Well, we weren't the only one superpower, and today, we're just one of three, and increasingly the weaker of the three.”

According to the Open Doors World Watch List, Somalia, Africa is the second most dangerous country worldwide in which to be a Christian. 11 Chinese hospitals suspended birthing operations The South China Morning Post reports that 11 major national hospitals have suspended birthing operations since last June — due to China's ongoing birth dearth. Total number of births across the country dropped to 9 million last year — get this — down from 18 million in 2016!   That's the lowest birth rate since accurate records were made available in the 1940s. China suffered a population loss of a half million people last year. At this rate, demographers estimate China will lose about 700,000,000 people or half their population over the next 80 years. Military buildup in Japan, China, and India Eastern nations are building up their respective military complexes. Japan's defense budget is expanding — a 16.5% budget increase over the last year.  Japan is inching towards a 2% GDP military expenditure, up from 0.9%  in the 1990s and early 2000s. China has also announced a 7.2% increase on its military expenditures for 2024. That's an officially released number of $236 billion — about double what it was in 2013. Even more significant, India's military spending has increased from $14 billion to $77 billion since 2000. Meantime, U.S. military spending has dropped from 7% of the GDP to about 3.5% of the Gross Domestic Product since 1980. 28-year-old depressed Dutch woman getting euthanized The Free Press reports on a 28-year-old Dutch woman who is “tired of living” and “depressed,” and will be euthanized by doctor's assistance. Zoraya ter Beek says she is “a little afraid of dying, because it's the ultimate unknown. We don't really know what's next—or is there nothing? That's the scary part.” Tragically, 138 Dutch people were killed or “euthanized” by a doctor who were committed on psychiatric grounds in the Netherlands last year, reports Dutch News.  Disturbingly, 5.4% of Dutch deaths are doctor-assisted suicides.  Trump on abortion: Leave it to the states Donald Trump, the leading Republican candidate for the U.S. presidency, announced Monday that he would rather leave abortion legislation up to the states, instead of seeking a federal law protecting the lives of the unborn. Trump announced his position on Truth Social. Listen. TRUMP: “Many people have asked me what my position is on abortion and abortion rights, especially since I was proudly the person responsible for the ending of something that all legal scholars -- both sides -- wanted and, in fact, demanded be ended: Roe v. Wade. They wanted it ended. “It must be remembered that the Democrats are the radical ones on this position because they support abortion up to and even beyond the ninth month. The concept of having an abortion in the later months and even execution after birth, and that's exactly what it is. The baby is born, the baby is executed after birth is unacceptable. “My view is now that we have abortion where everybody wanted it, from a legal standpoint, the states will determine by vote or legislation, or perhaps both, and whatever they decide must be the law of the land, in this case, the law of the state.” Trump also emphasized his allowance for killing the child in the cases of rape and incest. He places the priority on “the salvation of the nation” and winning elections, in his words “without which we will have nothing other than failure, death, and destruction." Biden wants to forgive more student debt before election Before November's presidential election, President Biden is attempting to squeeze in one more student loan forgiveness program which could impact 30 million college borrowers, reports Forbes.com. The new plan proposes to forgive accrued interest, and forgive loans for those earning less than $120,000 per year. Total student debt in the US tops $1.75 trillion, with an average debt of $28,950 — 92% of which are federal loans. Thus far, the President has managed to wipe out $143 billion in federal student loans. 2 Chronicles 19:7 says, “And [Jehoshophat] said to the judges, ‘Take heed what ye do: for ye judge not for man, but for the Lord, who is with you in the judgment. Wherefore now let the fear of the Lord be upon you; take heed and do it: for there is no iniquity with the Lord our God, nor respect of persons, nor taking of gifts.'” Missouri, Michigan and Hawaii are targeting homeschoolers In the parental rights arena nationally, Missouri and Michigan state governments are proposing compulsory attendance laws which would lower the entry school age to 5 years of age. Plus, the Hawaiian government is proposing mandatory “wellness” visits from friendly Department of Education bureaucrats for families who choose to homeschool. Could a mother and her mentor, once trusted with the care and guidance of children, be responsible for their abuse? This troubling question has been answered in the case of Ruby Franke, a parenting YouTuber, and her business partner Jodi Hildebrandt. Both women have been sentenced to four consecutive prison terms each, following guilty pleas to child abuse charges. The case came to light after one of Franke's children fled Hildebrandt's residence in August, seeking help from a neighbor. Franke, known for her "8 Passengers" YouTube channel, and Hildebrandt, who ran ConneXions Classroom, faced six counts of aggravated child abuse, with each count carrying a possible prison term of one to 15 years and a fine of up to $10,000. During sentencing, state prosecutor Eric Clarke likened the environment Franke's children endured to a "concentration camp-like setting," describing Franke's actions as "horrible acts of child abuse." Clarke also labeled Hildebrandt a "significant threat" to the community. In court, Franke acknowledged her guilt and expressed gratitude to the officials who rescued her children. In a shocking incident, a 13-year-old boy is facing accusations of murdering 60-year-old grandfather Richard Sanchez during an argument that escalated on a public bus last week. The dispute, which allegedly began over a blocked aisle, resulted in a tragic loss of life and has left the community in disbelief. The incident occurred on a Saturday night at around 6:41 p.m. at the intersection of South Federal Boulevard and West Mississippi Avenue, just a few blocks away from Empower Field at Mile High, the home of the Denver Broncos. According to authorities, the argument between the teen and Sanchez escalated to the point where the teenager shot the elderly man. Sanchez was immediately rushed to the hospital, but tragically, he was pronounced dead. Another individual sustained injuries during the altercation but did not require hospitalization. Disturbingly, Sanchez's family was kept in the dark about his fate until they attempted to file a missing person report the following Monday. Joseph Chavez, Sanchez's grandson, expressed the family's shock and heartbreak, saying, "It's been hard because we didn't know where he was at, and the whole time, he was at the hospital, and they didn't contact us. Nobody was there with him during his last breath." Chavez fondly remembered his grandfather as a "really happy dude," emphasizing the senselessness of the tragedy. The Denver Police Department is holding the 13-year-old suspect under investigation for first-degree murder. The Denver District Attorney's Office will ultimately determine the charges against the teenager. This shocking incident has highlighted safety concerns on Denver's public transit system, with reports showing that at least 178 passengers reported being assaulted or injured while using RTD transit in 2021 and the first two months of 2022, according to RTD records shared by Fox 31. The tragic incident has also brought attention to the overall crime rate in Denver. As of 2023, the city has been averaging six homicides per month, raising concerns about public safety and the need for community vigilance. As the investigation into this heart-wrenching incident continues, the Denver community is left grappling with the senseless loss of Richard Sanchez and the pressing need for safer public spaces for all residents.
