Shalom Haverim, es una frase hebrea que traduce literalmente “Paz, amigos”. Para comprender el uso e importancia de esta expresión, es necesario entender los conceptos que engloban cada una de sus palabras. “Shalom” tiene un significado más profundo que la ausencia de un conflicto, implica un estado de armonía y bienestar. Shalom, se utiliza también como un saludo, puede ser "hola" o "adiós" según su contexto. Además de esto, lo interesante de las palabras en hebreo es que todas vienen de una raíz, y esta raíz hace que cada palabra se conecte con la fuente, que trae significados muchos más profundos de lo que podemos imaginar. On this special Creative Collisions episode, Jim Stengel chats with Chidiebere Ibe and Shamel Washington, two leaders of an initiative called Illustrate Change. Chidiebere is a Nigerian medical illustrator, medical student, and aspiring pediatric neurosurgeon. In the summer of 2020, Chidiebere's image of a black fetus medical illustration went viral around the world. It sparked a groundswell about representation in medical imagery: less than 5% of medical imagery shows dark skin.Joining Chidiebere is Shamel Washington, an Associate Creative Director at Deloitte Digital, focusing on life sciences and healthcare. Shamel is the lead creative director on the Illustrate Change initiative, working alongside Chidiebere and the initiatives' partners, Deloitte and Johnson & Johnson. Today's guest is Shamel Pitts. Shamel is a dancer, choreographer, teacher, as well as performance, conceptual, and spoken word artist. Since 2019, he is the artistic director/founder of TRIBE, a New York-based multidisciplinary arts collective which was a 2020-21 Artist-In-Residence at 92Y Harkness Dance Center. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he started his professional dance career with Mikhail Baryshnikov's Hell's Kitchen Dance and BJM_Danse Montreal. Between 2009-2016, he was a company member of the Batsheva Dance Company, led by Ohad Naharin where he studied Gaga movement language, of which he is now a certified teacher. Since 2015, Shamel has created a triptych of award-winning multidisciplinary works known as “BLACK Series,” which has been performed and toured extensively to many festivals around the world. He is the recipient of a 2018 Princess Grace Award in Choreography, a 2019 NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship Award winner in Choreography, and a 2020 Jacob's Pillow artist in residence, a 2020 Guggenheim Fellow, and the cast member of the 2021 Bessie Award-winning production of “The Motherboard Suite” at New York Live Arts. Shamel is 18 years-old and attends Voyages South High School in Queens. He’s a go-getter and is settling in a career path thanks to New York State PROMISE. While Shamel is in a positive place now, more than a year ago this was not the case. He had a medical condition from a car accident. As a result he missed a lot of school and was not going to be able to graduate. In the first of this two part series, we see how PROMISE Case Manager Learie Carrington teamed up with Shamel and his family to get him on the right track.
