Nancy J. Duncan has had an eclectic career spanning over 50 years of experience in the performing arts as a dancer, educator, producing director, manager, and arts management consultant.Nancy's dance training started under Nevorah Adams in South Dakota and it was through Nevorah's hosting of a summer dance residency taught by Loyce Houlton and two of her dancers, Frances Machala and David Voss, that her passion for dancing fully ignited. Under the tutelage of Houlton and her beautiful, diverselyskilled dancers and many guest artists at the Contemporary Dance Playhouse in Minneapolis, later renamed Minnesota Dance Theater, Nancy developed her skills as a dance teacher and performer.Upon moving to New York City in 1981, Nancy began forming her own artistic vision and mission greatly inspired by Loyce Houlton's vision. Working in partnership with composer Scott Killian and dancer Jackie Goodrich, and in consultation with Lawrence Rhodes, esteemed dancer, teacher and Chair of the New York University Tisch School for the Arts Dance department, Nancy conceived and founded CoDanceCo (collaborative dance company).Nancy and her team established CoDanceCo as a production company devoted to nurturing the creative development of dance artists and providing audience access to outstanding dance artistry that reflected the creativity and eclecticism of contemporary dance. CoDanceCo was designed as a highly flexible organizational model that could adapt to the ever-changing world of dance creators, performers, collaborators, educators, presenters, and audiences. From 1982-1991 Duncan commissioned and presented works created by 28 choreographers, 14 composers, and 50 dancers. Choreographers commissioned over the years include Eiko & Koma, Ralph Lemon, Susan Marshall, Bebe Miller, Mark Morris, Charles Moulton, Ohad Naharin, Doug Varone, Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane, among others. Duncan's work through CoDanceCo garnered Duncan a 1991 New York Dance and Performance Award Citation (aka Bessie).Highlights from 1991-2003 include serving as the artistic director for London Contemporary Dance Theatre; producer of a four-week British dance festival in New York City, project management for Arts International, and Community Outreach Programs Director for Mikhail Baryshnikov's White Oak Dance Project production PastForward, touring both nationally and internationally. From 1996-2003, under the umbrella of CoDanceCo, Duncan managed to keep producing projects to support dance artists and their audiences through her membership in the New York State DanceForce. The projects were accomplished in partnership with NY state artists, presenters, and educators. In 2003 Duncanrelocated to Long Island and established a new home base for her work through CoDanceCo. During this time Duncan also served as a member of the Suffolk County Citizens Arts Advisory Board, became a founding member of the Patchogue Arts Council, served on the Board of the Patchogue Theater, among other opportunities. In 2006, Duncan was introduced to Pierre Dulaine's arts-in-education, social-emotional in-school residency program titled “Dancing Classrooms.” Working in partnership with Dulaine, Duncan secured a two-year grant from the Dana Foundation to have CoDanceCo become the licensed national network affiliate site on Long Island. Pierre and his staff trained Duncan and a team of teaching artists in the Dancing Classrooms syllabus and the company launched its first in-school residencies in the winter of 2008. Since the founding of DancingClassrooms on Long Island, CoDanceCo's teaching artists have touched the lives of over 30,000 youth, adults, educators and families with the transformative power of Dancing Classrooms. For youth and adults alike, the program creates meaningful social connections, inspires respect for diversity, and instills self-confidence all through the joy of social dance.

«Gaga» was?

«Gaga» - was?

We begin with a Case Study exchange with host Sylvain Souklaye and curator/artist Sabrina Huth, who sheds light on creating a physical exhibition “Stories of Absence” during the pandemic in Amsterdam. Then we proceed to a piece by performance artist Diana Schuemann (based in Haifa), who poses the question of movement during uncertain times. For our conversation portion, we welcome CAD+SRs very own Affecting Technologies research group featuring Katherine Ye, Gabriel Pereira, and Bruno Moreschi, a group of artists, researchers, technologists and activists, who work towards new countercultures of computing. Lastly, we end with a sound piece entitled “Água de Chocalho (Rattle Water)” introduced by sound curator KMRU, created by Brazilian sound artist and researcher, Yuri Bruscky. Gabriel Pereira Gabriel Pereira is a PhD fellow in Information Studies at Aarhus University (Denmark). Jennifer welcomes writer, dance artist, filmmaker, entrepreneur, and mother, Lilly Bright. Lilly’s journey through life has been one filled with chance encounters, unexpected experiences and constant change. Originally from West Virginia, Lilly moved to Chicago to study at Northwestern University. Shortly thereafter, she moved to New York, spent time in cooking school in the Berkshires of Massachusetts and moved to Los Angeles. It was there that she started her career in film production, met her husband Evan and started a family. Her film career includes the production and distribution of award-winning films and documentaries under the banners Curiosity Bright Entertainment and Arthouse Films. She regularly teaches the Feldenkrais Method and (soon) Gaga Dance, the movement language of Ohad Naharin. In this episode, Lilly talks about her journey to find herself, from moving to New York City to spending time taking cooking classes in the Berkshires to starting her own award-winning production company in Los Angeles. Jennifer and Lilly share their own experiences with postpartum depression and raising children. Lilly speaks to the inspiration to start her own solo show, American Standard: A Story of Enough. This original solo show is based on the story of Lilly’s life, chronicling her nearly two-decade battle with bulimia and various “not-enough” demons that propelled her to find the courage to finally feel enough. Finally, Lilly opens up about the reality that some of the greatest things in her life happened by chance. In our second to last episode of the season, Micah and Chuy are back in the studio to recap another exciting year of programming on the Hancher stage. We saw a lot, we learned a lot, and now we're ready to talk it through. We also attempt to unpack Batsheva's polarizing new work, Venezuela, which was performed at Hancher on April 12, 2019. What can good art do? Listen in to hear our thoughts. Under the artistic direction of choreographer Ohad Naharin, Israel’s Batsheva Dance Company has built a global reputation for excellence. Employing Naharin’s movement language—known as “Gaga”—the company stands apart from other modern dance companies, offering a singular and arresting approach to choreography and individual movement. In its first Hancher appearance since 2006, Batsheva performed Venezuela, a “work emblematic of Naharin’s curiosity and ongoing search for new challenges” (Haaretz).

Redaktion: Lucia Odoom, Christine Runøe & Nina Kragh.

Hillel Kogan is a dancer, choreographer and dramaturge based in Israel. His diverse range of works have been performed all around the world. Of particular acclaim is his piece We Love Arabs. This duet explores the dynamic relationship between an Israeli choreographer and an Arab dancer. The piece is political, funny and at times difficult to watch, as the Israeli choreographer repeatedly trips himself up on his own assumptions. This is a piece that resonates strongly with a diverse range of audiences as it continues to tour 5 years after its creation. We Love Arabs is performed in Hebrew, French and English. We Love Arabs was the winner of the Outstanding Creator of the 2013 Israeli Dance Critics Circle Awards. Other full length works include The Rite of Spring created for Tmuna Theater’s Intimadance Festival, Tel Aviv in 2011. As a dancer Kogan has performed with Batsheva Dance Company, Nomades Dance Company of Switzerland and the Gulbenkian Ballet of Portugal. Kogan has worked as Assistant Choreographer to Ohad Naharin of Batsheva Ensemble. He has created works for National Ballet of Portugal, Muza Dance Company, and the Shades of Dance Festival at the Suzanne Dellal Center. On the occasion of the October 2017 National Arts Centre return of the Finnish contemporary dance troupe Tero Saarinen Company, Cathy Levy has a fascinating conversation with artistic director, dancer and choreographer Tero Saarinen. Tero came late to dance but quickly went from dance school to joining the ranks of the Finnish National Ballet, to studying Nepalese dance as well as traditional Japanese dance, butoh and martial arts, to creating on himself. An early duet caught the attention of Ohad Naharin who invited him to choreograph for Batsheva Dance Company. Over 40 works for his Helsinki-based troupe and commissions for world-renowned companies such as Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT1), Lyon Opéra Ballet, Gothenburg Opera Ballet and the National Dance Company of Korea, followed. Tero describes his company motto Aware, Alert and Attentive, the Tero technique, and how music is an endless source of inspiration. He then touches on his upcoming projects, one with Finnish accordionist Kimmo Pohjonen and the other with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, both premiering in early 2018.

After a decade of stardom in Israel, American dancer Bobbi Jene decides to leave behind her prominent position at the world-famous Batsheva Dance Company, as well as the love of her life, to return to the U.S. to create her own boundary breaking art. Tracking the personal and professional challenges that await her, Elvira Lind’s film lovingly and intimately documents the dilemmas and inevitable consequences of ambition. BOBBI JENE delves into what it takes for a woman to gain her own independence in the extremely competitive world of dance and to find self-fulfillment in the process. Bobbi Jene: Born in Centerville, Iowa. From 2005-2014 she was a member of the Batsheva Dance Company under the artistic direction of Ohad Naharin. She is an alumnus of the Juilliard School, North Carolina School of the Arts, and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School. Her choreography and solo work has been presented by The Batsheva Dance Company, PS122 COIL Festival, The Israel Museum, and the Luminato Festival. Bobbi is a certified GAGA teacher and has taught Ohad Naharin's repertory in schools and universities around the world. Director Elvira Lind: Elvira Lind graduated from City Varsity - School of Media and Creative Arts in Cape Town, South Africa in 2006 majoring in documentary film. She has worked within that field since directing and shooting documentaries of various lengths for TV, cinema, and web on four different continents. Elvira now lives and works out of New York, where she also writes on various fiction projects. Elvira's first feature documentary Songs for Alexis competed at IDFA in 2014 and screened at a long list of international festivals. Director Elvira Lind stops by to talk about an amazing artist, pushing against artistic boundaries and love. For news and updates go to: bobbijene.oscilloscope.net facebook.com/bobbijene

BalletMet’s 40th Anniversary season is packed with World and Company premieres. Artistic Director Edwaard Liang answers a few questions about this upcoming season, in addition to this podcast.Which performances are you most excited for Columbus to see?Two things: I’m really excited for Columbus to see Minus 16 by Ohad Naharin, and I’m really proud to introduce the first Forsythe work to Columbus. Of course I’m also excited for the Columbus audience to see [Dorothy and the Prince of] Oz because that’s been three years in the making.Could you tell us a little more about Dorothy and the Prince of Oz?It’s a brand new full-length that premiered in Tulsa this past February. It’s about the story of Dorothy being called back to Oz to help save two warring lands of Oz. It’s continuing the progression of full-lengths that I would like to continue to program in Columbus, whether it’s my work or other choreographers’ full-lengths. These types of full-lengths are the new generation of full-lengths, where they incorporate different technical aspects in production and projection. It really fits along with the model of what we [BalletMet] want to accomplish of being an innovator of dance and trying new ways to tell the story, a new story.Check out a full list of productions for BalletMet’s 2017-18 40th Anniversary season.https://www.balletmet.org/2017-18-seasonThis year we’re excited to introduce Account Manager! One Thing Leads to Another is a working installation and multi-media performance, revolving around a overturned hot air balloon, reanimated through narrative, dance and shifting physicality. This project from artist Tamar Ettun will abstract vignettes from The Odyssey, taking the text's themes of labor, gifting and movement of the itinerant body, while incorporating dance traditions from Trisha Brown, Yvonne Rainer, and Ohad Naharin's GAGA. The performance, which will occur inside the inflated balloon, will last two hundred and forty minutes, referencing The Odyssey's 24 chapters. The audience can come and go as they like, and is encouraged to move inside and outside the balloon to witness the narrative evolve into an animate sculpture, featuring video projection, live music, and choreography from seven performers, including the artist. Performers will move from one end of the balloon to another, each making an effort to complete specific tasks while negotiating the physical impediment of others blocking their path. Once all tasks have been completed, all performers will rotate 90 degrees and repeat. Performers: Danielle Agami, Netta Yerushalmy, Luke Murphy, Yoni Kretzmer, Jaeeun Lee, Tamar Ettun. One Thing Leads to Another is organized and presented by Recess.
