PROG SUPERGROUP COSMIC CATHEDRAL RELEASING DEBUT ALBUM FEATURING NEAL MORSE…CHESTER THOMPSON…PHIL KAEGGY…BYRON HOUSE… ZOOM SPECIAL EDITION WITH EX GENESIS DRUMMER CHESTER THOMPSON ON INTERVIEWING THE LEGENDS   Hello everyone and we are back for another edition of Interviewing the Legends… I'm your host Ray Shasho. How do you make an album that is different to what is usually expected of you? One answer is to work with musicians who also have decades of experience and worldwide recognition, plant a few seeds, then stand back and see what happens. For the Cosmic Cathedral project and their debut album ‘Deep Water', this is exactly what Neal Morse did, joining up with Chester Thompson, Phil Keaggy & Byron House. As Keaggy comments: “It was an honor to be invited and included in the making of the Deep Water project with Neal, Chester and Byron.” Much of the album was created from jam sessions where Morse's long-time audio partner Jerry Guidroz put the best parts together, then Morse and the band developed them into songs and epics. “Much of the album, and certainly “Time To Fly”, came directly from the jam sessions, where we were spontaneously creating in the room. Even a lot of the lyrics just came out of our mouths! It was amazing!” What resulted from all this was a more groove-orientated feel, which Morse calls a “prog meets yacht rock meets The Beatles” kind of album, with an unmistakable jazz fusion influence: “These guys are real groovers: even if they're playing proggy stuff, it has more of a Steely Dan feel to it, but when Phil and I start singing it sounds like The Beatles! In Deep Water, the ‘New Revelation' section is based on a jam that turned into something that could have been on a Sting album! So, there's a lot of variety here.” And Chester Thompson says, “I am super excited for people to hear this album. There was great communication between all the players. One of my favorite projects I've ever been a part of!” And coming from someone who's played with Genesis and Frank Zappa, that's quite a statement! The album will be available as a Limited CD Digipak, Gatefold 2LP & as Digital Album. Meanwhile, Schmidt takes the fall for Fawn's panty-gate scandal while Cece tries to find a way forward. This episode got a 7/10 rating from Kritika and 7.5/10 from Kelly and we both had the same favorite character: Jess! While not discussed in the podcast, we noted other references in this episode including:[Robert] Durst - While Coach and May were arguing, Winston was mostly concerned with his waffle, commenting that if it wasn't hot he would “go [Robert] Durst on them.”[Metropolitan Opera] - May accepted a job in New York as a section musician for the Metropolitan Opera, often referred to as “The Met”. Royal Stockholm Orchestra - Schmidt was excited for May's job opportunity noting that the conductor who must have liked her did a magnificent job when conducting with the Royal Stockholm Orchestra. The Pearl - Schmidt humorously critiques a pull quote that compares the book Cece was reading and its length to the novella The Pearl by John Steinbeck. "Black Velvet" by Alannah Myles - In the bar, a favorite song of Coach's – “Black Velvet” – begins playing and he starts dancing. The Vagina Monologues - Fawn was emphasizing that she was showing her true self by saying, “I'm a politician, not in The Vagina Monologues.”Beyoncé / "Crazy in Love" / "Drunk in Love" - Schmidt was telling Fawn that he wanted to be in love and then started quoting Beyonce lyrics like “crazy in love” and “drunk in love.” There was also a reference to Beyonce in S2E2 - Katie and S1E20 - Normal. Thanks for listening and stay tuned for Episode 22! Today, we’re celebrating what would have been the 90th birthday of Elvis Presley. There’s been a lot written and said about The King over the years, but in this episode, we’re going to let Elvis do a lot of the talking. We have some amazing audio from the early years. Most of these clips are from the mid to late ‘50s – and they capture a lot of the excitement – and the freshness of Elvis Plus we have clips from the people who were there… - his label mate Carl Perkins talks about touring with Elvis and Johnny Cash before any of them were well known. - Dick Clark describes how Elvis was seen as a sort of villain compared to the likes of Pat Boone - Ed Sullivan explains why Elvis could only be shown from the waist up on his third visit to his show. - His collaborators in the late ‘60s explain the stories behind his comeback hits. All of these clips are from around the time that these events happened – so they capture history as history was being made. Plus, we’ll hear from some of the people who worked with Elvis over the years who will tell the stories behind some of his biggest songs. Also, Tom asks Christopher to explain how a trip to Graceland in 1987 with a bunch of Elvis fans led to the creation of “Black Velvet”, which of course was a massive worldwide hit for his musical partner and friend Alannah Myles. And best of all, we hear from the two people who knew Elvis best – his daughter Lisa Marie (in a 2005 chat) and his widow Priscilla (from 2006). Famous Lost Words, hosted by Christopher Ward and Tom Jokic, is heard in more than 100 countries worldwide and on radio stations across Canada, including Newstalk 1010 Toronto, CJAD 800 Montreal, 580 CFRA Ottawa, AM 800 CKLW Windsor, 610 CKTB St Catharines, CFAX Victoria, AM1150 Kelowna and 91x in Belleville. As she investigates her family's history with the artwork, disturbing dreams and unexplained encounters pull Lucy toward a dark and dangerous fairy world that some believe is real.

WE'RE BACK! Despite taking a well needed break over the summer, we felt we had to do this post Too Much Tour debrief! In part, because we still can't believe it all happened, and mostly because we have a thousand people to thank!! If you've just discovered us, this is NOT our usual episode format, so best dive into another episode first. This LENGTHY reflective ramble is a one-off in which we spill the tea about the ADHD awareness raising tour which almost didn't happen(!) and most definitely could not have happened without the hardcore generosity of so many people who kindly gave up their spare time and spare rooms to make this ridiculousness possible! In hindsight, our (almost back to back) 15 date UK tour was absolutely TOO MUCH on every level! But despite the literal blood, sweat and tears, we had the time of our lives and cannot say thank you enough! We've learnt a hell of a lot... and we can't stop singing Black Velvet! There are TOO MANY people to thank for the word count even without this blurb, but all are thanked profusely in this beast of a blether! Did it really happen though?! With very special thanks to the legendary Joe Charlan for suggesting doing a tour way back in Sept '22; though we're sure this all singing, all dancing extravaganza wasn't what he'd envisaged... all or nothing? Us?!  Big love and gratitude to all of our guest speakers, to all of you who came along and that we had the honour of meeting, to our Merch makers, to the venues, and those that helped on the show dates, to the community members who let us hitch a ride, to Kim Pierpoint for coming up with the risky but genius scheme that saved the day in our darkest hour, and to the one and only Nicole Nadler for ABSOLUTELY BLOODY EVERYTHING!  - We can't wait to reunite with our tour Mum Nicole at the INCREDIBLE Edinburgh Fringe show 'Why am I like this?', a lot of which she wrote on the road with us and previewed at our shows. Eugene Robinson was at many iconic hardcore shows in the 80s--as a musician (He played in Whipping Boy), as a journalist, and as a fan. The scene was not always a pretty place. He's been in enough fights that he wrote a book about it. Fight: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Ass-Kicking but Were Afraid You'd Get Your Ass Kicked For Asking.  But Eugene's latest book details his hardcore years and it's another mouthful. A Walk Across Dirty Water and Straight Into Murderer's Row: A Memoir. So we brought him on to tell his punk stories. This is easily the most intense episode of In Defense of Ska. There are many violent stories, including the infamous Misfits show in San Francisco in the early 80s where the band hurls homophobic slurs at the crowd and then Paul Caiafa (aka Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein) nearly kills a kid. Eugene tells this and other stories in graphic detail. We also talk about Dead Kennedys and SSD in Staten Island, Bad Brains' famous 3-day run at CBGBs, Whipping Boy's first show ever (opening for Circle Jerks), and the time Eugene got jumped on his way to see The Clash film Rude Boy. He also tells us how his love for The Specials inspired him to go to college at Stanford, how he made a lot of money arm wrestling a group of guys and how he went to high school with the members of early New York dance/ska band Urban Blight. Plus we talk about his band Black Face which he did with Black Flag bassist Chuck Dukowski, and how Ian MacKaye (Minor Threat, Fugazi) tried to get them to change the name to Black Velvet because "Black Face is a fucked up name." Eugene explains why he didn't take Ian seriously (Hint: It's because he wrote "Guilty of Being White.")  Support the show

After two decades of pursuing a music career, a 30 year old Canadian singer named Alannah Myles scored a #1 hit in 1989 with “Black Velvet”. While her success continued for years after in the Great White North, she completely fell off the Billboard charts of the United States. This week, we try to determine if the blame for her US decline should fall on the lack of promotion from her record label, or if the rest of Alannah's catalog just lacked that slow southern style.  If you like the show, be sure to rate, review, and subscribe. This week on The Spindle, Marc Masters and John Howard drop the needle on Swell Maps, "Read About Seymour" b/w "Ripped and Torn" and "Black Velvet." Initially released on the band's own Rather Records and then reissued by the Rough Trade label in 1979, this single presents Nikki Sudden, Phones Sportsman, Epic Soundtracks, Jowe Head, along with D. Mint and Golden Cockrill, as young adolescents.  John and Marc both have personal ties to the Swell Maps crew, which they get into plus much more on this super-fun episode of the show. About The Spindle: The 7-inch record isn't just a format—it's an art form. On each episode of The Spindle podcast, music writer Marc Masters (Pitchfork, The Wire, Bandcamp) and music historian (and music maker) John Howard dive into a great 7-inch, dissecting its background, impact, and the reasons why it stands out as a small plastic piece of music history.
