The mission of this organization seems harmless enough: to compel governments to produce financial reports that are accurate (stop the presses!), but apparently, this is more controversial than it sounds. David and Sheila walk through the simply unfathomable abuses of basic accounting that local, state, and federal governments get away with, and ultimately, how this undermines the optimal growth of a free and productive economy in monumental ways.

US national debt, adding up pension and medical liabilities, is around $919,000 per taxpayer. Sheila Weinberg, founder and CEO at Truth in Accounting, explains how many obligations do not appear on federal and local governments' accounting, in contrast to private-company reporting. Weinberg perceives more citizens are becoming interested in debt numbers, now that inflation is affecting their pockets. For them, she recommends staying aware and critical of their governments' fiscal management, since some—such as Illinois—have decided to leave out pensions and other retirement benefits completely from their debt reports. Last year, our friends over at Urban3 introduced us to a nonpartisan nonprofit called Truth in Accounting, which recently published Financial State of the Cities 2022, an annual report that they do on local governments and the state of their budgets. It's an incredible piece of work, one that says, “We do not advocate for anything: no tax policy, no spending policy. The only thing we advocate for is good budgeting and accounting.” Their only goal is to get the numbers out there to the public, as they believe strongly that governments are harmed when citizens (and sometimes even elected officials) are in the dark when it comes to financial information. Knowledgeable decisions can't be made if people don't know the true financial condition of their government. Sheila Weinberg, a CPA and Founder and CEO of Truth in Accounting, joins Chuck Marohn today on the Strong Towns Podcast to talk about the work her organization is doing to make municipal financial information both transparent and available to everyone. For years, elected state officals hid their states' pension and retiree healthcare debt from taxpayers for political gain. Sheila Weinberg, founder and CEO of Truth in Accounting, exposes bad accounting practices used by state politicians to hide massive amounts of debt in an effort to get re-elected.
