Carey Anne Nadeau is the Co-Founder and Co-CEO of LOOP, a car insurance agency that makes it their business to serve the underserved, including people who have no or low credit. Using data in novel ways, LOOP is capitalizing on industry-wide mis-pricing, delivering an affordable and dignified experience to its members. Carey believes that by using data we can reveal and correct for institutionalized bias, supporting smart policy making and building big businesses in the blind spot of legacy financial services institutions. She's been chipping away at this problem for 15 years, founding multiple companies, becoming a vocal advocate for justice and equality, and being a thought leader in the smart cities and open data movements. Carey honed her craft at premier research and academic institutions – the Brookings Institution and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where she holds a Research Affiliate appointment and a Master's Degree from the Dept of Urban Studies and Planning. She's been published in books, articles, and won national awards for her cutting-edge work using geospatial statistics to discuss the living wage and urban mobility. Highlights from the Show Carey's career was focused on data and decision making, which is where her interest in insurance as a social good came from, wondering if there was a way for data to create fairer ways to cover people She co-founded LOOP as an auto insurer that tries to undo the industry practice of using credit to price risk, and instead do so in ways that are fairer and rely on what actually correlates to risk LOOP is the only standard auto insurer that has committed not to using credit, but also doesn't use profession or other things that can drive bias Credit's issues stem from very real, normal things that people do, like having student loan debt, working as a 1099 instead of W2 employee and more Instead, LOOP considers things like the roads you drive on, and the likelihood of crashes on them rather than credit Carey talked about how credit varies in ways that's uncorrelated with risk She sees a future 10 years from now that won't include credit Regulators are more open to moving past credit than some may think because they care deeply about redlining and ensuring people are getting a fair shake LOOP can show regulators two ZIP codes and crash risk, and that there's an equal probability in the wealthy and poor neighborhood, so why would ZIP be a basis to charge more for the poor neighborhood when the risk is the same? When it comes to new data and AI, there's no silver bullet – it's hard work, and you have to figure it out, invest in the models, and monitor them over time; you can't just throw AI at it and pray it works The impact is that the average auto policy is $1100, and these people with the same risk but a worse credit profile are paying $1600, which is a massive disadvantage Segmentation matters, and many in the industry seemed to have stopped at where we got in the mid-2000s rather than being willing to really challenge things We discussed the three waves of InsurTech insurers 1st wave - eSurance, which was about digitizing the process 2nd wave - those who tried to push on tech approaches without considering underwriting mindsets as much 3rd wave - companies like LOOP that are not looking to grow at all costs, but start from a strong underwriting mindset There's a return to capital efficiency in today's macro-economic environment, which provides opportunities to get good talent and to stay steady, focused and disciplined while others are stalling or faltering This episode is brought to you by The Future of Insurance Volume III. Chuck Wallace and Joe Lynch discuss the HDVI story. Chuck is the CEO and Co-founder of High Definition Vehicle Insurance (HDVI), where he leads an experienced team of insurance, technology, and trucking industry experts who deeply understand the challenges of today's fleets. About Chuck Wallace Chuck Wallace is the CEO and Co-founder of HDVI. He has decades of experience in the insurtech, mobility, and freight and logistics markets -- and the intersection between these three industries. Prior to founding HDVI, Chuck held senior operating roles in leading consumer financial services and technology companies, including Co-founder of Esurance (acquired by Allstate in 2011); Head of Operations at Automatic Labs (connected car and connected insurance platform company acquired by SiriusXM in 2017); President at uSell.com (eCommerce platform company for sale of used mobile consumer electronics), and was the CEO at Ustream.TV (live video broadcast platform company acquired by IBM in 2016). Chuck started his career as a United States Air Force instructor pilot, first teaching young men and women to fly at undergraduate pilot training in Lubbock Texas, and then flying the C-130 Hercules in Frankfurt, Germany and Willow Grove, Pennsylvania. Chuck is a graduate of the US Air Force Academy. He earned an MBA from the Wharton School, and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. About HDVI HDVI delivers modern insurance driven by safety, service and savings to small and mid-size trucking fleet operators. It aims to become a partner to fleet business owners by providing next-generation insurance integrated with best-in-class telematics hardware, advanced software and services to help them manage their vehicles and business each day. By incorporating telematics and dash cam data from its customers into its integrated risk management model, HDVI is able to select, price, manage, and retain risk more accurately and efficiently than incumbent commercial auto insurance providers. HDVI is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, with additional offices in Greenville, South Carolina; Austin, Texas; and San Francisco, California. High Definition Vehicle Insurance, Inc. is a licensed property casualty insurance agent with products underwritten by various insurance companies. HDVI Newsroom with all recent news, including most recent press release: https://hdvi.com/newsroom/ Key Takeaways: The HDVI Story Chuck Wallace is the CEO and Co-founder of High Definition Vehicle Insurance (HDVI), where he leads an experienced team of insurance, technology, and trucking industry experts who deeply understand the challenges of today's fleets. In the podcast interview, Joe and Chuck discuss Chuck's impressive background and the founding of HDVI. Chuck is one of the Co-founders of Esurance, which was eventually acquired by Allstate. Chuck and the team at Esurance were one of the first insurance companies to sell policies directly to consumers over the internet, instead of using in-person meetings or phone calls. Chuck has also successfully lead a number of companies that have one characteristic in common – disruptive brands that transformed markets by leveraging technology and data. Chuck and his team at HDVI are using the same playbook, using tech to lower costs and deliver a better customer experience. HDVI created Shift – the first dynamically priced insurance product that enables fleets to reduce the cost of their monthly premiums within their policy term. HDVI's Shift tool uses a fleet's own real-time telematics data to charge a fleet the cost of their actual risk. Because HDVI has more precise information, they are able to deliver savings that traditional insurers can't match. They are also able to provide specific insights that can make a fleet safer – thus reducing their insurance costs. HDVI's fleet portal and dashboards help fleets understand how to improve safety and decrease insurance premiums. John, who was named a 2020 Mid-Atlantic Entrepreneur of the Year, has been responsible for overseeing all aspects of Pie since its establishment in May 2017. He brings over 20 years of experience in tech-enabled insurance and financial services businesses. Prior to Pie, John served on the Esurance executive team for 13 years, where he initially led all of the financial functions from 2000-03 and then became the company's first Chief Marketing Officer. Under John's leadership of the marketing team, Esurance premium volume grew from $50 million in 2003 to $1.3 billion in 2013. Esurance was sold to Allstate in 2011 for $1 billion. John holds a B.A. in Economics from Haverford College. Highlights from the Show John started in insurance through his family's business while he was in college, making his way to Esurance in 2000, ultimately leading the Finance team and then as Chief Marketing Officer until 2013 After swearing he'd stay out of Personal Auto because of the competition dynamics, he met his co-founder, Dax Craig, in 2016, who together created a different vision for small business commercial insurance buyers They wanted to make their offering as easy as pie, hence their name, Pie Insurance Small Commercial is a target market for so many, yet few have really been serving it well, despite how well it performs They found Small Commercial to be an underwriter-driven space even though most businesses in the space don't have the loss history and complexity to require that kind of attention Instead, Pie was built to look at the data available about the business and think through the risk with an algorithm; they still have underwriters behind the algorithm They've found this to be critical in their lines, starting with Workers Compensation, because there is a lot about a risk that isn't available in data or as finite as it would be in Personal Auto or some other lines That makes it hard to figure out what the business actually does, and therefore what the exposure behind it is This is especially problematic in Workers Comp because you're on the risk, whether they or you mis-categorized the business as the injured worker isn't a party to the policy, and therefore can't be denied coverage Pie therefore looks at taking in the 'digital fingerprint' of a business through its online presence, to develop a more accurate picture of what the business actually does than you'd get on an app The net result of inaccurate underwriting when the market is making money is that insureds are being over-charged, or at least many risks are being over-charged to make the total risk pool profitable for the carriers writing the business By being able to more accurately segment and price risks, Pie is able to charge less for risks it understands better and yet still earn a competitive return Pie's algorithms are working to distinguish rate within a class, while the rating agencies like NCCI are determining it between classes at an average level for a given class This has allowed them to grow rapidly and profitably because they price accurately to win the right risk rather than doing what others have done, which is just under-price to sell They've doubled the book in the last year, growing to over a $300 M run rate as of earlier 2022 They also sell direct, through agents and brokers and partners John learned lessons from his first go-round with Esurance: Underwriting comes first, so you need to build a profitable book, especially if you're using someone else's balance sheet because you must have that support to do business It is all about the people (which they call Pie-oneers) Looking forward, line of business matters, so there are lines Pie isn't considering (like Cyber), but they recognize that their customers have additional needs like Commercial Auto, Liability and Property Where they can have a data and analytics advantage, it makes sense to think about expanding But they couldn't start with so many lines up front because you have to have vision and focus to execute successfully The market will continue to digitize, but that's not the same thing as everything going direct This episode is brought to you by Ascend (useascend.com/futureofinsurance) and by The Future of Insurance thought leadership series (future-of-insurance.com) from Bryan Falchuk. Steve Lekas, Co-Founder and CEO, Branch Insurance A 20-year insurance veteran, Steve began his career at Allstate, followed by Esurance, where he built the first U.S. online home insurance business. Prior to Branch Insurance, Steve was President of the Insurance Services Office's personal lines business for Verisk Analytics. Steve co-founded Branch in 2017 to make insurance less expensive and reintroduce insurance to society as a communal good. Branch launched in 2019 and is expanding nationally. Joe Emison, Co-Founder and CTO, Branch Insurance Prior to Branch, Joe founded BuildFax (acquired by DMGT), Spaceful (acquired by Xceligent), BluePrince (acquired by Harris Computer), and EphPod (acquired by Wind Solutions). Joe graduated with degrees in English and Mathematics from Williams College and has a law degree from Yale Law School. Highlights from the Show You need a reason to be valuable to consumers in a different way Branch's mission is to make insurance less expensive so more people can be insured In their early consumer research, Joe asked people what they would do if they had a magic wand relative to their insurance, and roughly 90% said they'd make it cheaper Insurance is based on exclusions through underwriting that result in tens of millions of drivers (for example) going uninsured and more being under-insured Branch started a 501(c)(3) called SafetyNest that takes a small portion of the premiums paid and sets them aside to be able to make grants to those who suffered a loss and can't cover the cost of making them whole again, which could be because of being under-insured or uninsured, or paying the premiums of those in need to ensure they stay covered The intention is to take the national uninsured percentage from 15% to 2% It applies to Branch customers and non-customers, so it is genuinely aiming to help the larger problem in the country With the "Build vs. Buy" debate, Joe believes you should try not to build anything, and code is a liability, not an asset The mission has helped keep them focused on efficiency, which means they build fewer things themselves, located in a city (Columbus) that is lower cost than where many startups are, and keeping the team as small as possible to help keep their costs down This leads to really empowering their staff to do what they need to do in serving their customers, which has lead to happier staff and happier customers, with a Google rating of 4.9 stars, which is outrageously high for insurance This episode is brought to you by Medallia (Medallia.com), and the book series, "The Future of Insurance: From Disruption to Evolution" by Bryan Falchuk (future-of-insurance.com). In this podcast, Esurance CMO Alan Gellman discusses a wide range of marketing topics. But as seems to be the case for so many top marketers, tools and platforms are important, but to drive growth, it all comes down to trying to understand the people you want to reach: “We always — always — hang into that center of ‘Who are these people and how do we deliver for them?’ Because as we deliver for the consumer, we deliver for our companies.” He also says, “Let’s never lose sight that, as marketers, our primary charge is to drive growth — but how? It’s through insight and depth of understanding of our customers and would-be customers, and that’s not just about data … ‘It’s what’s the humanity that the data brings forward?’” Finally, Gellman reminds us it’s important to find some joy. “If you’re not laughing, if you’re not having fun, then it’s just not worth it.“ Highlights from this week’s “Marketing Today” podcast include: Storytelling still matters, regardless of the technological platform. (4:07) What is my connected life? — Takeaways from CES 2017. (8:30) Embracing change to create great possibility. (11:19) Sight, sound and motion in the changing media landscape. (14:02) Who am I reaching and how? — Storytelling across creative assets and channels of reach. (18:58) Brand engagement: Interacting with customers and prospects. A number of news items coalesced recently and made me wonder ... what is the true role of social media in the marketing mix today? How has it changed? Is it really about connection? Is it still a way to engage with customers? Or, has it been so overrun by agencies and programmed content that it is little more than advertising? Maybe you have been wondering the same thing? This is such a vital topic that Tom Webster and I decided to tackle this on the latest edition of The Marketing Companion. Have you listened to our podcast yet? If not, please give it a try. We always aim to deliver entertaining and thought ideas to help you through the latest marketing trends and you might have some fun along the way, too. A case study illustrating the impression power of social media How will social media platforms re-invent themselves to ignite a "wow factor?" Yes, we covered a lot of ground in just 30 minutes!
