It's awards season! Well at least here at Startup CPG it is. If you aren't aware, we have our very own annual industry award competition at Startup CPG, and this year is the Third Annual Shelfies Awards, proudly sponsored by Floret, where we recognized the most promising emerging CPG brands. Startup CPG wanted to create opportunities for industry recognition with no entry fee, no essays, and only for emerging brands. This year the categories expanded beyond food, beverage, and supplements to include pet, beauty, and health products, and we received over 600 submissions that have been narrowed down to 76 finalists across 21 categories. I thought it would be fun to have the two main judges and coordinators behind the Shelfies on the show to talk about trends and some of the finalists. You may know the names and voices of Patricia Menegoto, Startup CPG's Head of Marketing & Community & Jenna Movsowitz, our Startup CPG Spotlight Magazine Managing Editor. We didn't have time to discuss every finalist, even though we love them all so much, so I've linked in the show notes the latest magazine edition with all the finalist brands you'll be wanting to try and celebrate. We'd love for you to join the LinkedIn live awards ceremony in a few weeks on September 28, 2023; you can find the link in the show notes or on our Startup CPG LinkedIn page. Also, a fair number of the brands mentioned today are either backpack or innovation brands at Expo East, so if you are headed to Philadelphia, be sure to stop by to try for yourself. There will also be a Shelfies celebration meetup in LA in October and details will be in Slack and the newsletter soon. Now let's talk Shelfies!Episode Links: Startup CPG Spotlight Magazine: Frozen Edition & Shelfie Finalists Attend the Shelfies Awards Ceremony on LinkedIn Live on September 28, 2023 Shelfies Award sponsor Floret Jenna's LinkedIn Patricia's LinkedIn Startup CPG Pet Judges Video on Instagram Mentions: Toum by Saha, Sohha Savory, Culture Kitchn Kombucha, Pedestrian Project, Daybird, Jaded CBD, Bonny, Funk It Wellness, Tend Prenatal, Recoup Wellness, Twrl Milk Tea, Hooch Booch, Immorel, Krushwell, Thrive Market, House of Kajaana, Kula, NoBull, Something Sweet, Kind Roots, Ghost Town Oats, Seeductive Foods, Rebel Cheese, Goddess Mousse, Full of Beans Kitchen, Better Sour, Bundle & Joy, Petaluma, A Better Treat, Homescape Pets This episode was sponsored by Settle. If you are listening to this episode on release day, you may notice it's not Tuesday! That's because I wanted to bring you the Startup CPG news hot off the press: a recap of the 2022 Shelfie Awards! If you aren't aware, we have our very own annual industry award competition at Startup CPG, and yesterday was the Second Annual Shelfies Awards Ceremony, proudly sponsored by Trax Retail, where we recognized the most promising emerging food & beverage brands. Startup CPG wanted to create opportunities for industry recognition with no entry fee, no essays, and only for emerging brands. We had over 300 brands submit over 600 products! Finalists were chosen in 13 categories, and then last night, we had a live awards show with 200 people across the country, virtual and in-person, where 14 winners were announced (there was one tie!). I thought it'd be fun to get an event debrief and learn more about the awards from Jenna Movsowitz, head of marketing and editor of “The Spotlight” at Startup CPG. We didn't have time to discuss every winner and finalist, even though we love them all so much, so I've linked in the show notes the magazine editions that have links to all the brands you'll be wanting to try and celebrate. Jenna shares trends from all the award submissions and also, how to apply for upcoming other opportunities to be recognized and featured by Startup CPG. So pop the champagne, or maybe kombucha if you are driving, and celebrate with us!
What if you stopped making the kind of work you don't actually like to make and decided to only make the random thing that really interests you? And what if… what if doing that actually brought you more sales and more people interested in your work and excited about the same thing you are excited about than you could have ever imagined? That very thing is happening for Kate Schroeder and her Shelfies and on this episode, we get to hear all about the long road that led her to today's successes."For full show notes and links to all of our guests' resources visit: www.makersplaybook.com/podcast"

We've all had those times where we dreaded going to that “parent meeting” or to that friend's party, where we only know our 1 friend. It's so intimidating to walk into a room where you know pretty much no one. Cue the sweaty palms and stomach ache. Our guest today has the absolute best way to handle those awkward settings and advice on how to stay authentic in your friendships- share a (kinda) embarrassing story! You'll laugh, they'll laugh and suddenly everything will seem so much easier! Have you heard of Union Craft Brewing in Baltimore? Then you probably fall into one of two categories: You love their beer, and you already know how awesome Union head brewer Kevin Blodger is; or You love their beer, and now it's time to get to know Kevin Blodger. (There's probably a third category of not liking their beer, and thus not caring about who Kevin Blodger is... but if that sounds like you, we may not be able to be friends, so let's just move on.) Kevin Blodger, Union Craft Brewing head brewer, all-around badass One sunny Friday morning not too long ago, I made my way to Baltimore to sit down with Kevin in Union's taproom. During our chat, we talked about: How he got his start in brewing and his background at Gordon Biersch and District Chophouse. Upcoming collaborations with Goonda Beersmiths, Oliver Brewing Co. and Stillwater Artisanal. Why the first day they ever brewed their Duckpin was the worst day ever. Moving to their new space — the Union Collective — and the community-focused vision behind their new space. Bars vs. brewery taprooms -- what's the difference? How it felt to have Guinness’ interests as a foreign company prioritized ahead of local Maryland brewers. "Shelfies" vs. limited releases.... and much more! Okay, Here’s the Episode “When I look back on it, we were doing something really cool. We were training as German brewers … We were getting a formal brewing education through our practices.” “We’ve got all of these great breweries here already -- why not do everything you can to help them shine?” “I wish that at some point [Del. Talmadge Branch] had reached out to us, so we can show him what we do here…” “There isn’t a single brewer in the state that I don’t like, that I’m not happy to see every time I see them.” “I hate this saying that if you can buy a beer on the shelf, it’s not as good as a limited release.” Related Articles and Content The Union Collective (and coverage by the Baltimore Sun) My interview with Del.
