You don't have to have a garden to enjoy plants and this week David Maxwell explores the plant world that prefers the indoor life. Roisin Horgan set up her houseplant business in east Belfast after years working in offices which lacked greenery. She reveals the best plants for different indoor locations including, the trailing Pothos or Parlour Palm (Chamaedorea elegans) for a dull hallway, the Calathea for areas of high humidity or the tree like Norfolk Island Pine (Araucaria heterophylla) for bright locations. In his Templepatrick garden, Reg Maxwell is pruning gooseberries and apples and David visits Claire Barnett's new north Antrim garden where she'll be taking part on the RSPB's Big Garden Birdwatch this weekend. Cherry Townsend joins David in studio with tips on making gardening easier and the best beans to grow in 2025. Email the programme - gardenerscorner@bbc.co.uk

In this podcast we return to a former guest, Matt Sherwood, whom we featured in an earlier podcast in this series (see https://www.fiftyfaceshub.com/157-matthew-sherwood-ph-d-of-wevidit-media-determination-vision-and-the-power-of-reframing/) in order to catch up with his new venture, Pothos Partners. The name comes from the golden pothos plant which sequesters carbon particularly efficiently among plants. It is also a resilient plant that is difficult to eliminate. The firm will be focused on delivering asymmetrical value opportunities and is currently focused on the opportunity set in California carbon emission allowances market. Matt describes the window of opportunity in this market and some of the misunderstandings that persist about this market, particularly how it is differentiated from the voluntary carbon offset market. He ties it to the goal that many investors have to achieve net zero targets and how this regulated market can offer real evidence around emissions and progress. Finally we return to Matt's own story of visual impairment and how this has not deterred him from pursuing his passion of value investing, founding a firm and making impact. This bonus series is kindly supported by Sound Mark Partners. Sound Mark Partners LLC is a women-owned and led private credit firm focused on commercial real estate.

Hello to another Boozy Tuesday! With Angelique visiting sunny Florida, we thought we'd do a mini deep dive on the botanical and animal world of the state. We talk mangroves, gators, gigantic Pothos, baby manatees, and swamp life.
Sex fascinates us. Whether we turn toward it, flushed and excited or away from it, tense and disquieted. Archetypal images of sex adorn the thresholds of ancient temples and inform most mythological systems. Shiva and Shakti, in their union, create the universe – she's providing all forms for his undifferentiated light. The gods beget gods as they mate, giving rise to infinite imagistic permutations of cosmic and personal qualities. These religious images of creation and pleasure inform our individual psyche granting sexuality a numinous intensity. Human culture shapes our initial attitudes toward sex. When infused with monotheistic religious feeling, sex is held as a sacrament subject to the rites and rituals believed to protect the couple from its overwhelming power and god's jealous monitoring of the behavior. Polytheistic religions generated a multiplicity of god-forms and related myths to reflect a wide variety of possible relationships to sex and its outcomes. Pan, the lusty fertility god of the rut, Aphrodite the mistress of beauty and refined passion, Anteros the god of love returned, and Pothos, the god of sexual yearning – the infinite diversities of sexual expression, were held by related images and protectively tended by their devotees. With the age of enlightenment that inevitably led to the current juggernaut of science and empirical attitude, we disposed of the archetypal images of sex, driving them into our personal and collective shadow. Defenses like shame and resentment keep the gods of sex at bay. At war within our bodies, they cause genital tissue to ossify and choke off requisite blood flow. Freud was foremost in the battle to understand and liberate trapped sexual forces. As a neurologist, odd cases of functional disorders came to his attention – a patient who mysteriously could not feel a limb or a loss of sight without organic cause. His rigorous exploration of symptoms and personal narrative led him to a theory of psychosexual development which clarified how sexual energy, when thwarted, could lead to a host of mental and physical suffering or neurosis. Jung expanded the theory, suggesting there were many kinds of psychic energy, in addition to sex, that produced symptoms when trapped by unnatural attitudes or traumatic interference. He accepted the creative reality of sexuality and was an early champion of sexual diversity and self-determination. As moderns, we have tried to liberate sex by reducing it to a transaction, making it subordinary and thus non-threatening. Kinsey championed the natural fluidity of sexuality by surveying and analyzing personal erotic experiences and publishing them – he tried to restore consciousness to the diversity of sexual themes, hoping it would broaden modern attitudes and cultivate acceptance. The chorus of explainers now spans widely from biopsychosocial researchers to evolutionary psychologists, gender role theorists, to social constructionists. Add to that list theologists, talk show hosts, and podcasters, and we can all agree – we can't seem to take our eyes off sex. Here's the Dream We Analyze: “I was running a marathon in the desert. First, I saw pueblos, familiar from an old dream. Then I saw a sleeping dragon, then a stack of rainbow-colored rocks. Finally, I entered a taqueria, and the man behind the stand gave me a sugar-covered tortilla. Then a woman with a veil came in.” REFERENCES: From Freud to Jung: A Comparative Study of the Psychology of the Unconscious by Liliane Frey-Rohn. https://a.co/d/63atnIv Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus: The Classic Guide to Understanding the Opposite Sex Paperback by John Gray. https://a.co/d/4ZWjSmW The Kinsey Institute, https://kinseyinstitute.org/ GIVE US A HAND! While it is toxic and not recommended for consumption, this plant is nowhere near as dangerous as its cousin Poison Ivy. This week the Plant Daddies cover Scindapsus pictus and treubii, ubiquitous trailing tropicals with variety and hardiness that may surprise you. Are these truly alternatives for the classic Golden Pothos? And why are these considered "a Pothos" …and why is a Pothos called a Pothos anyway? Matthew's mic breaks, so it sounds like he's calling from an airplane. And it's been a while since Stephen hasn't grown a plant we're discussing, so he leans in. Ficus (Ficus robusta o elastica) 5. Dracena Janet Craig (Dracena deremensis «Janet Craig») 6. Hiedra (Hedera helix) 7. Palmera datilera enana (Phoenix roebelenii) 8. Ficus alii (Ficus macleilandii «Alii») 9. Helecho de Boston (Nephrolepis exaltata var. bostoniensis) 10. Spatifillo (Spathiphyllum) 11. Dracena «Messangeana» (Dracena fragrans «Massangeana») 12. Pothos, poto, poctus (Epipremnum aureum o Scindapsus aureus) 13. Helecho Kimberly Queen (Nephrolepis obliterata) 14. Crisantemo (Chrysanthemum morifolium) 15. Muchas gracias.

Indoor herb like basil or cilantro - I repotted and over-wintered the basil and cilantro growing in the garden. Choose an herb you love and plant it on your kitchen windowsill for an instant injection of freshness. Small parlor palm - Preferring 55-70 degrees, moist soil and filtered sunlight, the small parlor palm adds density to any indoor garden. The mini-trees create a faux forest look. Pothos - Pothos is arguably the easiest of all houseplants to grow and the most recognizable houseplant. It does well in rooms like offices, dorm rooms, bathrooms, and kitchens (yes, it even grows under fluorescent lighting). Pothos tend to vine, so I love to use them to take up area and create a living web of plants. What's up to my cacophonous crows and mellifluous magpies! BNP here, serving up a hot course of that weekly content you know and love. My Meowzers is snuggled up against a lucky bamboo, my mini fountain is gurgling, pressing water past my full moon-charged quartz, citrine, aventurine and tourmaline, and I am perched upon my elliptical, huffing and puffing beside my hanging Pothos plants, scribbling digitally to get this summary out. Scribbles making scribbles making scribbles...This episode is Part Three of the original BNP Series, Crafting Sobriety from the Chaos of Alcoholism. This installment is a dogged continuation of the personal recounting of my alcohol career, and it takes us up to 2009, a few months before my first rock bottom. First rock bottom? But surely one of the many totally fucked tales you tell in this episode counts for at least one rock bottom, you ask? Au contraire, beloved ruffians. This week's tales are harrowing, but despite all the mayhem in my rearview mirror, I was still fairly comfortable (at least consciously) within the cozy confines of my addiction. I would need a total of three rock bottoms before finally wrenching my thirsty Russian-Finnish booze-blood away from the cursed devil sauce once and for all. Part Four, coming soon, will pick up where this episode leaves off, and will chronicle the nitty gritty particulars of those three foundational and nightmarish nights. Thank you as always for listening and supporting the BNP! As always, feel free to contact me at barbarian.noetics@gmail.com with comments, questions, or if you'd just like to chat. As I said last week and the week before, it's an honor to be there for anyone grappling with addiction of any kind. We have to be there for each other.Big thank you to all the glorious listeners out there spreading the word about the BNP. Your puppy-pawed propaganda (as well as rating and reviewing) is working and my audience is growing. Thank you! If you'd like to own a piece of my ass and become a patron of the show, you may do so at www.patreon.com/noetics for as little as a $1/month. The generosity of my fabulous patrons helps to offset the costs of keeping the BNP on the air, and to you all I'm eternally grateful.Until next time,be good to yourselves and to each other. Monstera adansonii is a practically perfect houseplant, as easy as Pothos. Stephen also surprises Matthew with how interchangeable it is with candles, and then tries to get his name on the waitlist for cuttings of the mature adansonii Matthew plans to have in half a decade. Tune in to hear about this ornamental plant, and troubleshoot the very few issues you could encounter.

Cassidy used to think she had a brown thumb until she started to implement these tips. Now she discovered her green thumb! And you can too. Just remember to:Start small. Stick with one type of plant or plants that act similarly in the beginning. This makes learning how to care for your plants a lot simpler.Consider your environment. Only bring home plants with needs that will do well in your home. Do you live in an apartment with little natural light? If so, tropical plants in need of a lot of bright sunlight, will not do well in your space. Opt for plants that will be low maintenance in your home.Good beginner plants:- Pothos- ZZ Plant- Snake Plant- Spider Plant- Aloe Vera- Palms (there are a lot of varieties, so research first)Don't repot right away. When you purchase a plant, they're generally coming from the cushy conditions of a nursery. It'll go through a bit of a shock coming into your home, which for them is a whole new environment. Let them ease into their new environment by leaving them in their nursery pot for a little while. You can sit it inside a cover pot so it'll look more cohesive with your space.Don't over water. The detriment of most plants is being over watered. We're so eager to watch them grow and thrive that we can unknowingly suffocate them. Before watering most plants, stick your finger in the soil up to your second knuckle. If the soil down there is still moist, hold off on watering just yet. If it's dry however, its time for a thorough drink! (This varies from plant to plant, so always research your specific plant first to know the best way to care for it.)QUESTIONS FROM INSTAGRAM:"Indirect light is straight confusing..."Basically, indirect light means that the plant receives bright light, but the sunlight doesn't fall directly on the foliage. So depending on where your light source is coming from, that might mean keep it away from right in front of the window."What are some plants that can live in water?"Many plants can live in water! (For at least some degree of time.) Pothos, rubber plants, and philodendrons to name a few.If you'd like to support fair trade, ethically made goods that give back -- shop our line at wakenedapparel.orgCONNECT WITH US ON INSTAGRAM:@WakenedApparel@Life_Simplified@DavidsUrbanFarm
? Bonne écoute !
Just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean your green thumb has to wither up and die. Turn your nurturing and love inward with these houseplants that will keep your urban jungle growing even in the depths of winter. If you want more gardening inspo, check out this episode recorded with gardener and creator ABeautifulNestTV all about the book “The Garden in Every Sense and Season” by Tovah Martin. @BriBooksPod’s Houseplants in @TheBriGarden Pilea peperomioides - The pilea peperoioides has circle-shaped leaves and prefers well-draining soil and partial light. Philodendron - Philodendron plants like bright, indirect sunlight, and regular fertilization to grow into its best self. The Plant Daddies grudgingly admit the numerous merits of the pedestrian but perennially-dependable pothos plants! Even some with rabbit proteins. Matthew reveals that he is secretly propagating them. And listen, we don't get into care advice, but just give them some light and water once in a while. OK? W pewnym momencie zadała synowi Billowi i Panu gościu Warrenu, pytanie: Czemu zawdzięczacie swój ogromny sukces biznesowy, chopacy?
