Room by Room: The Home Organization Science Insights Podcast
This week on Room by Room: The Home Organization Science Insights Podcast, host Gabriella Joustra is joined by Sara Losonci, the founder of an interior organizing service, Shelfie, to learn more about how living room organization can transform the shared living experience. Having lived in the notoriously dense New York City, Sara always had a knack for organizing within tiny, cluttered spaces, with a first-hand understanding of the space struggle and busy lifestyle that powers Manhattan. Thus, Shelfie was birthed with the goal of implementing the best storage solutions that remain pleasing to the eye. In this episode, Sara defines ‘shared living' as households encompassing more than one person, whether flatmates, families with children, or multi-general households. She also shares that assigning personal spaces, utilizing vertical and wall spaces, and setting clear boundaries can all support effective conflict resolution. Together, Gabriella and Sara discuss the key principles to consider when optimizing shared living spaces and cultural and social factors to consider. So, if your shared living space needs an overhaul, tune in to this episode for expert advice that will most definitely come in handy! Plus, we offered some heartfelt advice on reclaiming individual identity amidst the whirlwind of parenthood. If you're navigating the crossroads of personal growth and societal expectations, this episode serves practical wisdom wrapped in candid banter. Exploring Identity Beyond Parenthood - For many, including Amber, motherhood can eclipse individual identity. Recognizing your energy levels and clearly communicating them to your partner can make all the difference in navigating life changes. The One-Child Household Debate - The hosts openly discuss the growing trend of having one child, contradicting the myth of the 'spoiled only child.' Fostering Relationships in Transition - Listeners reach out for advice on maintaining relationships during postpartum and beyond. Beyn and Amber highlight the power of community, be it family, therapy, or church, and stress the importance of recharging and transparent communication with your partner. Beyn and Amber's honest conversations reflect the multifaceted challenges we all face. They advocate for carving out personal spaces, advocating for oneself, and fostering relationships built on understanding and support.

The living room floor was a mess, sort of anyway. Everything was neatly arranged in a grid pattern, but there was no order to it whatsoever. Books were next to plants, which were next to games, which were next to frames all while some of our cats were tiptoeing around everything. All of it was only temporary though. I just wanted to get everything lined up, before returning it all to My Shelfie by Matthew Dunstan and Phil Walker-Harding from Lucky Duck Games. Today we're joined by two of my favorite Startup CPG community experts: Kirk Visola and Andy Kurtts. The world of printed packaging is complex to navigate, and I wondered what was top of mind for Kirk and Andy as they help brands daily with designing and executing branding and packaging at Kirk's agency Mind the Font and Andy's agency Buttermilk Creative. Our goal was some 101 level content around designing and printing packaging for your brand. Listen in as Andy and Kirk share about: - Common misconceptions when working on print projects and how the color you see on a screen translates to printed color - The importance of being a good partner to your packaging vendors and considerations for choosing a printer - Tips for navigating a re-brand - Ideas for saving money while still creating custom packaging - How to transition from packaging primarily for DTC to a successful package for retail shelves - A review of Shelfie winner AWSM's sauce's unboxing experience (44:29) and how to maximize your DTC consumer experience with packaging - And more! And, stay tuned for a bonus episode this week featuring co-founder Carl from AWSM Sauce - not only a Shelfie winner, but also one of the fan favorites from our Backpack Brands event at Expo East last year. Welcome to January 25th, 2023 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate a study in opposites and sharing our love for books. Calvin Coolidge became our 30th United States President in 1923 upon the death of Warren G. Harding. He then ran for reelection in 1924 and won the Popular vote by a margin of 25.2, which is still considered a landmark victory. By 1928, Coolidge announced to the press, “I do not choose to run,” when commenting on the upcoming Presidential election. This statement caused widespread debate about whether or not he meant the opposite. But the President's life had been touched by the tragedy of losing his son, and he felt it was time to retire. He is credited with restoring dignity and prestige to the office of President after the political landscape had reached an all time low. While some politician's make a game of doing the opposite of their campaign promises, we celebrate a Commander in Chief who knew how to quit while he was ahead on National Opposite Day. In the early 1500s, Leonardo da Vinci kept a notebook to jot down his observations of the world around him. Among other things, he discusses why fossils of fish can be found in mountains and why the moon shines so brightly. It's full of random notes and illustrations, and is written in Da Vinci's famous backwards writing, which can only be read when viewed in a mirror. This simple 18 page book, known as the Codex Lester, was bought and sold several times over the years and became one of the most expensive books in the world. In 1994, Bill Gates bought it for just under 31 million dollars. On Library Shelfie Day, share your own love of books by taking a selfie in front of your prized editions. A couple weeks ago, Startup CPG hosted the 2nd Annual Shelfie Awards, where we recognized 14 brands across 13 categories. We'll be talking with more of the finalists and winners in the coming months on the show, but I wanted to give you all a chance to briefly meet each of our lovely winners. Today's episode is a special format with clips submitted by each winning brand. I'll still be here listening along with you and adding my 2cents. If you haven't listened to episode #61 yet, Jenna from the Startup CPG team and I discuss how the Shelfie Awards work and trends across submissions, so be sure to give that a listen as well if you like hearing about these up and coming rockstar products. I'm about to hop on a plane to Philadelphia to cover Expo East for you, so I'll have a roundup for you on that soon. If you are listening to this on the way to Expo East yourself, make sure to stop by Startup CPG's booth and say hi. I look forward to hearing about you trying our Shelfie winner's products - tag @startupcpg on Instagram, and there's links in the show notes to all the winners' websites. Welcome to January 26th, 2022 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate love for our partners in life and our own libraries. Frida Kahlo was smitten from the moment she set eyes on the mural La Creación in Mexico City. Not only with the art, but also with the man painting it—the famous artist Diego Rivera. It was about 15 years before they were formally introduced and they fell in love and married. Their relationship was rocky, with many ups and downs. However, their impact on one another's art was enormous. Individually, they became two of the greatest artists of the 20th Century, but it was their mutual love for one another that fueled their creativity. On National Spouses Day, celebrate the partners who stick with you through thick and thin. Because, as Frida put it: “You deserve someone who takes away the lies and brings you hope, coffee, and poetry." In the early 1500s, Leonardo da Vinci kept a notebook to jot down his observations of the world around him. While the books on our shelf may not be as valuable, we all have our favorites. On Library Shelfie Day, share your own love of books by taking a selfie in front of your prized editions. I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day!

I thought of this about 20 years ago because I had hardwood floors and my decorative pillows slid off of my cedar chest when my cats jumped on the bed. I didn't do anything about it until 2019 because I was trying to survive all those years as a very busy single mom. In 2019, I was happily married to a very messy man and he constantly cluttered the chair in the master bedroom so I needed a place for my pillows. I made a prototype and pitched it to SharkTank and surprise...they liked it and advanced me to the "2nd" level but I didn't go further. I was not surprised because I didn't have sales or even a business at that point. I hustled through 2019, learned social media, tweaked my product and developed a business. I was starting to gain a little traction and then Covid hit. I'm a nurse so I took my job serious and put The Secret Shelfie on the "shelf". In 2021, I was determined to re-launch and I did so by hiring a social media company. They were fabulous and did everything expected but the sales have been stagnant. Currently, I am scratching my head and wondering what direction to take as I scrutinize and analyse the world we live in and why it is so hard to get the public to embrace this lifestyle change. You see, I get terrific feedback about "how cool this product is" once I get people's attention long enough to explain it but then, when people think about it long enough, the response is generally "Oh, I just throw my pillows on the floor". Some people have a chair for their pillows and I get that but as a successful realtor in a past life, excess furniture is a no-no. The fact is, it involves a lifestyle change. By this, I mean people must move a piece of wall art or a TV to make a place for their Secret Shelfie. It involves work and the willingness to change habits. I am trying desperately to figure out how to make this work in a world where you get 3 seconds to convince someone to buy a product that involves work and a lifestyle change.
