In this city, the church bells toll without reason, the dead won't rest, and something ancient hums just beneath the surface.THE TRUE CRIME CASE THIS STORY IS BASED ON: On Sunday, October 13, 1867, Ferdinand Hoffman fatally stabbed his ex-wife, Caroline Yost, inside the German Reformed Church in Canton, Ohio. The attack occurred after Hoffman, recently released from prison, followed Yost into the church and confronted her behind the belfry door. Witnesses reported hearing screams as Hoffman fled, leaving Yost with eighteen stab wounds. Yost, who had divorced Hoffman after years of reported abuse and his repeated arrests for crimes including counterfeiting and theft, survived for nearly a week before succumbing to her injuries. The tip of Hoffman's knife had broken off during the attack, lessening the severity of later wounds. Hoffman was captured shortly after the stabbing by a group of citizens who prevented a lynching. He was held in jail awaiting murder charges. Authorities reported that Hoffman expressed no remorse, stating he regretted not killing Yost outright. The morning after Yost's death, Hoffman was found dead in his cell, having hanged himself with a bedsheet. THE TRUE CRIME CASE THIS STORY IS BASED ON: In the rough and tumble world of 1890s New Jersey, William H. Dunham, owner of two notorious roadhouses, meets a violent end. Known for his ill temper and jealousy, Dunham's life of debauchery and crime catches up with him on the night of December 23, 1891. After a drunken brawl with his wife, "Diamond Kate," and their hostler, Patrick Phelan, Dunham is found shot dead in his own establishment. Despite numerous enemies and a tumultuous personal life, the investigation into Dunham's murder stalls. The discovery of a clean, unfired revolver at the scene and various suspects, including rivals and jilted lovers, complicate the case. THE TRUE CRIME CASE THIS STORY IS BASED ON: On the evening of March 7, 1866, the body of an unknown man was discovered with a gunshot wound to the head at the corner of 100th Street and 2nd Avenue in New York City, a remote area at the time. The large amount of powder around the wound indicated a close-range shot. The man, around 30 years old and fashionably dressed, was found with $15 in his pocket, ruling out robbery as a motive. The crime scene featured an eight-foot embankment and a small stream, where the body lay amidst wagon tracks and men's footprints. A Colt Navy revolver was found at the scene, but it was fully loaded and unfired, discounting suicide. It was believed the man was killed elsewhere and his body dumped to avoid detection. On the 27th of February 1982, people who were walking around the High Edge Racetrack near Buxton in Derbyshire found the body of a woman alongside it. On the 25th of March 1993, 47 year old Jean Bradley headed back from her job on New Bond Street in London to Acton on the tube. Jean parked her BMW on Carberry Avenue and when she got back to her car she always drove back home to her home in Berkshire. That night she arrived back in Acton at around 7:20pm but when she got to her car she was attacked from behind by an unknown man. Her attack was witnessed by people in the street and a long mile and a half chase through the streets by a passerby ensued. On the 28th of September 1939, 4 year old Joyce Cox was walking home from Whitchurch Infants School in Whitchurch, Cardiff with her cousin and older brother Dennis. Somewhere along the few minute journey, Joyce disappeared and her family couldn't find her anywhere. Her body was later found and it was discovered that she had been strangled. Our guest today, Kevin Schaefer has done an incredible amount of research about fatherhood in particular, how fathers in Canada compare to fathers in the US and what policies encourage or discourage a father's involvement and availability in the home in each country. He's an associate professor in the department of sociology at Brigham Young University. He's had over 40 peer reviewed articles. That's how I got in touch with him is I read one of his articles about childhood trauma and just was absolutely touched by the stories there. He has a book coming out called, So Close, Yet So Far how Canadian and American fathers differ and why.
