SummaryIn this episode, Kate Morton discusses coming off of hormonal birth control. She emphasizes that the episode is not anti-hormonal birth control but aims to provide information for individuals to make informed decisions about their bodies. Kate explains how hormonal birth control works and its side effects. She shares her personal experience and provides recommendations for preparing to come off hormonal birth control. Kate also discusses balancing hormones post-birth control, potential effects after coming off birth control, and the importance of cycle tracking and non-hormonal birth control methods. Takeaways Hormonal birth control works by interfering with the communication between the brain and the ovary, stopping ovulation and making the environment inhospitable for sperm. Coming off hormonal birth control can have different effects on individuals, and it is important to listen to your body and give it time to adjust. Before coming off hormonal birth control, it is recommended to replenish essential vitamins and minerals, consider seed cycling, and learn about your cycle through fertility awareness methods. Balancing hormones post-birth control means allowing the body to go through its natural four phases: menstrual, follicular, ovulation, and luteal. Cycle tracking and non-hormonal birth control methods, such as the fertility awareness method, can be effective in preventing pregnancy and understanding your body's natural cycle. Today we're talking about something that is super important for hormone health and fertility, but needs to be used wisely: iodine! Every single cell in your body utilizes iodine in some way or another. It plays a huge role in fertility, thyroid health, fibroids, adenomyosis, heavy periods, endometriosis — the list goes on!But the thing is, we usually aren't deficient in iodine, we just have blocked receptors, meaning our body can't properly use that iodine. It's really important that you do not supplement iodine without closely working with a practitioner. But there are a lot of super simple and supplement-free things we can do to make sure our body is using iodine efficiently. In this episode you'll learn more about:The role of iodine and how it affects our bodiesIodine antagonists - what could be blocking your receptors and how you can clean them outSigns of iodine deficiencyImportance of working with a practitioner for iodine supplementingThank you to PaleoValley for sponsoring this episode!Use code LEAH for 15% off at PaleoValleyThank you to Funk It Wellness for sponsoring this episode!Use code LEAH15 for 15% off at Funk It WellnessAdditional ResourcesHTMA testing inside Mineral MagicWellnesseBodyBioMetabolic MaintenanceThorneSeeking HealthFullscript dispensaryPaleoValleyJigsaw HealthRowe Casa - Topical Magnesium Hakala ResearchWhy Salt is Essential to Our Health The recommendations presented in this podcast are not a substitute for medical advice from a qualified doctor. It's awards season! Well at least here at Startup CPG it is. If you aren't aware, we have our very own annual industry award competition at Startup CPG, and this year is the Third Annual Shelfies Awards, proudly sponsored by Floret, where we recognized the most promising emerging CPG brands. Startup CPG wanted to create opportunities for industry recognition with no entry fee, no essays, and only for emerging brands. This year the categories expanded beyond food, beverage, and supplements to include pet, beauty, and health products, and we received over 600 submissions that have been narrowed down to 76 finalists across 21 categories. I thought it would be fun to have the two main judges and coordinators behind the Shelfies on the show to talk about trends and some of the finalists. You may know the names and voices of Patricia Menegoto, Startup CPG's Head of Marketing & Community & Jenna Movsowitz, our Startup CPG Spotlight Magazine Managing Editor. We didn't have time to discuss every finalist, even though we love them all so much, so I've linked in the show notes the latest magazine edition with all the finalist brands you'll be wanting to try and celebrate. We'd love for you to join the LinkedIn live awards ceremony in a few weeks on September 28, 2023; you can find the link in the show notes or on our Startup CPG LinkedIn page. Also, a fair number of the brands mentioned today are either backpack or innovation brands at Expo East, so if you are headed to Philadelphia, be sure to stop by to try for yourself. There will also be a Shelfies celebration meetup in LA in October and details will be in Slack and the newsletter soon. There is SO much information out there about intermittent fasting. But what does the research actually say? Today, I'm joined by Katie Morton from Funk It Wellness to talk about this controversial topic! In this episode, we cover: The different types of fasting, including Time Restricted Fasting, Alternate Day Fasting, and 5-2 Intermittent Fasting Why IF is so popular The reported benefits and why the research can be deceiving Fasting for men verses for women Why we don't recommend it for women Is weight loss always an indicator of health? What happens to our hormones during IF The potential negative impacts on your health with IF Where you can find Kate:
Overview:Join us today for an eye-opening discussion on intermittent fasting with Dr. Danielle. We dig deep into the effects of fasting, especially on individuals with periods. While it's gaining popularity, is it truly beneficial for everyone? Key Highlights: Intermittent Fasting Types: From alternate day to 16-8 fasting, there's a range of fasting techniques. Hunger Hormones: Fasting can spike hunger signals by increasing hunger hormones. Menstrual Cycle Disruption: Regular intermittent fasting might alter menstrual cycle hormone levels, even potentially disrupting once-regular cycles. Acne Outbreaks: An unexpected side effect? Increased occurrences of acne in some individuals. Gender Differences: Males and females have different energy needs and hormonal responses. For instance, females possess higher levels of kisspeptin, influencing reproduction, and hunger. Fertility Concerns: Research suggests fasting might affect fertility, evident from animal tests where it led to decreased fertility and shrunken ovaries. Hypothalamic Amenorrhea: Dr. Danielle's patients have experienced this condition due to intermittent fasting. It occurs when one eats too little or exercises excessively. The Impact of Starvation: Denying food can lead to decreased energy, potentially causing fatigue and a lack of wellness. Cortisol Spikes: Excessive fasting might lead to stress responses, elevating cortisol, causing symptoms like brain fog, fatigue, and anxiety. Thyroid Connection: Dr. Danielle's diagnosis of Hashimoto's thyroiditis at 19 brings attention to the potential connection between fasting and thyroid function. Prolonged fasting can negatively impact those with thyroid issues. Before you dive into any trending health topics, always ensure you consult with healthcare professionals, and stay informed with credible research. Prioritize your well-being and ensure your body receives the nourishment it needs. Welcome back to another episode of the Period Chats podcast! Our guest today is Hannah Heidel. Hannah is a nutritionist and owner of Nourished Girl, which is an awesome company that has been a long-time partner of Funk It Wellness. Today's episode contains such a meaningful and impactful conversation. Hannah and I dive in to some of the ways that the wellness journey isn't always easy or linear, and also how hormone and period health can effect many people's experience of adolescence and early adulthood in pretty profound ways. We also talk about how the little changes we make in life can add up over time to create big health improvements, and about the many, many connections between synthetic hormones and certain mental health side effects. Hannah first reached out to Funk It when she was getting off of birth control pills, so we start our chat with her back-story. Hannah dealt with PCOS and cystic acne from an early age, and was prescribed birth control. While it helped her feel more social and normal, she eventually learned about its possible interplay with things like anxiety and some types of weigh gain. Hannah and I talk about our experiences of feeling different, out-of-body, or not quite ourselves when we were on the pill, and how one might determine if they absolutely need birth control, or if there might be other options. She is now managing her health, hormones, and blood sugar in more holistic ways (including seed cycling!), and is not only experiencing a lot of improvements personally, but is sharing her knowledge and wisdom with her online community. We talk about what it's like to first discover that things like testosterone and progesterone levels can effect our life experiences so profoundly, and how we've learned over the years to embrace the ways that our bodies operate, and work with them to feel our best. We also chat about how it feels to be less of a partier as well as being more self-aware than average, and how our natural leadership qualities and callings in the wellness space also create some loneliness at times. Hannah shares some incredible soul wisdom about how happiness is an inside job, and how cultivating joy through movement, nutrition, doing things you love and building something valuable can help your physical and mental health. Finally, we talk about enjoying and sharing the small things, creating community online, and inspiring others to find self-love! So fam, be easy on yourself, take the pressure off, and take it one day at a time. We're all on this wellness path together! Follow Hannah on Insta: @NourishedGirl

Our hormones strongly impact things like mental state, appetite, weight gain/loss, thought process, confidence and more. For those who experience a menstrual cycle, experiencing the highs and lows of hormonal changes can often be confusing, frustrating, and painful. In this episode, we explore the topic of cycle syncing: the practice of adjusting your diet, exercise, and habits to align with the menstrual cycle and best support how you feel. This means cultivating a deep understanding of the changes happening emotionally, physically, and mentally each month, and being able to make empowered decisions about your lifestyle: whether that's rescheduling an important meeting, optimizing your workout schedule, or choosing different foods for the week at the grocery store. In Part 1, we cover the follicular phase (the “spring phase”) and the ovulatory phase (the “summer phase”). In each section, we discuss the primary hormones that are rising or falling, best foods to eat to support those hormone changes, recommended types of exercise, & mental/psychological changes. We're overwhelmed and excited by the rich info we began finding on this topic, so we decided to split this into two episodes. In the meantime, we're also working on compiling this info for you all on our instagram: @passthecompassion. Follow to stay tuned! Thanks so much to Alina Alive and her video on youtube that inspired the breakdown and facts shared in this episode. Other sources referenced include the book “In the Flo” by Alisa Vitti, the podcast “Balancing Hormones Naturally” by Leah Brueggemann, and Funk It Wellness for seed cycling info. Kate went to school to become a registered dietitian, and never intended to be an entrepreneur let alone become a marketer for her own business. Kate Morton is a registered dietitian and owner and founder of Funk It Wellness. After years of struggling with the many life-altering side effects of birth control, she decided enough was enough. She wanted to embrace her period and learn about her cycle. After stopping birth control her period decided to ghost me for 6 months which really freaked her out! When it finally did return, it was horrific. Ear-to-ear hormonal acne, thinning hair, cramps so bad I couldn't go to work, and intense mood swings. After doing tons of research and looking for food-based approaches to menstrual health (putting her dietitian degree to good use) she was introduced to seed cycling. TBH she didn't believe it would work but she was desperate. After 3 months her acne, cramps and mood had done a total 360 and she knew she had to share that method with other menstruators! Her goal is to make Funk It a safe nutrition-backed space for anyone struggling with hormone imbalance so we can honor our cycles and bodies. I ask Kate: How did you get into what you're doing? We talk about the need for fiber in hormone balancing. We talk about the harmful effects of hormonal birth control and being pro-knowledge, not anti-birth control. Let's unpack misogyny in medicine. Let's talk about how our nutrition affects our hormones and PMS. Let's talk about detoxing naturally, for free (drink some water and eat some fiber). How can I get started with seed cycling and how does it work? Where can we find you? https://funkitwellness.com/ https://www.instagram.com/funk.it.wellness/

Every month your menstrual cycle transitions through four different phases; Menstruation, Follicular, Ovulation & Luteal. When your hormones are out of balance you will experience PMS symptoms like moodiness, cramps, cravings, sore breasts, and hormonal acne. Our body is more efficient at processing nutrients from real food, that's why seed cycling is so beneficial. It makes sense to get your vitamins and minerals through food rather than pills. Seed cycling uses food (flax, pumpkin, sesame, and sunflower seeds) to work with your body to support the rise and fall of your hormones. Join me as the founder of Funk It Wellness, Kate, and I talk through how beneficial seed cycling is for your hormones! Welcome back to the Period Chats Podcast! Today is a solo episode where we hear from Kate Morton, our host. Kate is a dietician that specializes in hormone health and the founder of Funk It Wellness. Kate shares why she started the podcast, why she's so passionate about women's health, and gives us a must-know run down on the topic of seed cycling. Kate carries a passion for educating her community about the menstrual cycle, correcting common misconceptions about periods, talking about society's impact on our health, and championing effective holistic options. Her own life experience led her into this passion: she suffered from hormonal imbalance for years, experienced adverse effects from coming off birth control, and then finally came to a place of recovery and healing when she learned the important health principles that she now shares on this podcast. One key component of what Kate learned was that exercise and nutrition can play a huge role in recovering from hormone-related issues. She began to track her cycle and learn more about the four phases of the cycle. She was doubtful when a friend first introduced her to seed cycling, but it ended up helping her a ton. Seed cycling is using nutrient-rich foods (like organic pumpkin seeds, sesame, and flax for instance - btw these need to be seeds that are processed correctly and close to the date of consumption to avoid rancidity issues!) to support your body's production of the right hormones at the right times during your menstrual cycle. Everyone should have free access to information about maximizing their nutrition and hormone health. This podcast exists to make helpful knowledge like this more common through Kate's interviews with expert guests, key conversations, and data-backed information. It's all the stuff Kate wishes someone would have broken down for her earlier, and she's excited and grateful for the chance to pass it along to you! Part of holistic wellness is understanding that everything in the body is connected. Hormone balance affects many other areas of your health, and when this delicate balance is thrown off for some reason, your body's way of telling you can be through menstrual changes, energy issues, digestive troubles, insomnia, infertility, and more. For getting hormones back in balance, seed cycling can be a powerful way to use whole foods to improve your wellbeing. Blake was raised in a low-income household in rural Minnesota and had been overweight most of my adolescent life. My annual health “check-ups” usually resulted in tears from the Doctor telling my parents that I needed to be “put on a diet otherwise I would end up being obese later in life”. My family also used food as a reward, gathering, and comfort entity essentially only making my relationship with food and my body even worse. Eventually as I aged into high school I started playing sports (football, track, and wrestling) which eventually led me into the weight room and drove my passion for bodybuilding and physique transformation/enhancement. My passion for bodybuilding and health ran so deep that I ended up switching degrees my sophomore year of undergraduate college from Construction Management to Dietetics and leaving the family construction business. While all of this was occurring on the outside a massive storm was brewing in my body internally. Before I knew it my hormones were crashing (luckily I was already on hormone replacement), my mental capacity was failing (I was diagnosed with ADHD), I began battling depression (was started on 50mg of Zoloft), my GI tract began to fail miserably (I was diagnosed with IBS and placed on a medical grade PPI due to heartburn despite the fact I had low stomach acid essentially making the issue worse causing SIBO and Candida overgrowth), I was over training and undersleeping (causing my liver to become inflamed). All of these things were occurring while I thought I had been eating healthier then I ever had been, and to top it all off, my body composition that I had worked so hard for was slowly deteriorating. This was all brought on by stress overload and genetic/immune variances. This has whats lead me down the functional health/gut coaching journey, to help those that cant seem to find it. Tatiana holds a master's degree in Human Nutrition and is a Registered Associate Nutritionist with the Association for Nutrition in the United Kingdom. As a fellow PCOS warrior diagnosed in 2004, Tatiana is very passionate about empowering those with PCOS to take control of their symptoms through diet and lifestyle choices. Her hope is that her research will open up new knowledge in assessing the effects of mindfulness on certain symptoms of PCOS, and in doing so will also compare and contrast these effects with those of diet, exercise, and other medical interventions (which are equally as important). Menstruation and Periods are a normal part of life. Actually, let's start that sentence over... Life would not exist without menstrual cycles. So, why is there so much stigma around the topic? This week we welcome Kate Morton from Funk It Wellness to talk about menstruation and throughout our conversation, there were several eye opening, paradigm shift moments that came from talking about periods and women's menstrual health in a safe space. Many women are continuing to learn about their health many, many years after they have had their first period. But also, other conversations around work, business, productivity, living one's best life, and even removing the negative effects of patriarchal systems are all connected to having thoughtful and open communication about periods.*******Kate Morton is a Registered Dietitian & the founder of Funk It Wellness. To embrace the complex human experience is to see the world through other's eyes. The Third Place podcast helps with the disconnect. In today's episode, we are joined by Kate Morton, a registered dietician and founder of Funk It Wellness. Kate spent 10 years on birth control from age 14 to 24. When she finally went off of it, she was experiencing PMS symptoms for the first time, and they were intense. As a dietician, Kate started to do her own research to get her cycle back to normal. That's when she discovered seed cycling, where you eat certain types of seeds every day depending on where you are in your menstrual cycle. After just a few months, Kate found her painful PMS symptoms started to go away. Kate was so impressed with the results of seed cycling that she created her own business, Funk It Wellness, to make seed cycling easy and accessible to anyone that wants to try it.
