SCRIPTURE: Leviticus 19:33-34, Exodus 16:4, & Exodus 23:20So, if God is so generous and abundant and overwhelming, what happened to us? Why aren’t we more generous than we are? This week, we are discussing the trap of a scarcity mindset, and how only overwhelmingly good news has the power to deliver us from this trap into the abundant life we are made for.REFLECTION/DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:The first part of Kenny’s sermon attempts to prove that “we have become trapped by a scarcity mindset.” Discuss your understanding of this point and how persuasive you found it to be. Kenny argued that a “scarcity mindset” is produced by misunderstandings about the PAST (the supply is limited) the PRESENT (having enough is our responsibility) and the FUTURE (the situation won’t change). Discuss a time when you fell into the “scarcity trap”: did you experience these same misunderstandings? What happened, in your case?Kenny said that scarcity mindsets don’t develop when we don’t have enough...they develop when we have too much. Discuss this claim. How does the Law the Israelites receive while wandering in the desert relate to it?The second part of the sermon argued that the trap a “scarcity mindset” creates for us can only be undone by overwhelmingly good news. What is the “good news” Kenny talked about, and how does it specifically address the past/present/future problems scarcity preys on?How does the “Gospel story” reach out to impact you, whether you believe in it or accept it or not? Did you find this claim persuasive on Sunday? How can living generously help us to avoid a “scarcity mindset”?How can generous living extend beyond our time or our finances to include how we recognize and protect the dignity of other people?

BEST QUOTES "We have to settle into this new world and help people see the mission of the church.""Lead with a generosity story of how someone in your church is living generously right now.""If you can give a positive word about your finances, that would be good to do.""Because life is so challenging right now and there are so many distractions, giving to the church is the last thing on their mind.""On Sunday when you refer to the offering you only need to refer to one way to give digitally to keep it simple.""There are lots of ways to take up an offering during the week.""The offering is more important to a human being's faith than it is to a church's budget.""The church is going to have lower resources and it is going to have an increased benevolence need.""The biggest ministry in this season may be a church down the street that you need to lock arms with.""A simple online form that eliminates every conflict you can is what you need to start with for digital giving." Worship Ministry Training Podcast (For Worship Leaders)

I get a lot of emails from worship leaders asking for advice and counsel, and I am always happy to help! Some churches require even more help than a simple email response, so I recently started offering coaching services for an affordable rate. If your church needs some guidance or coaching, feel free to email me at alex@worshipministrytraining.com and we can try to get something on the calendar. Here are 16 questions I answered recently while coaching a church, and decided to make available as a podcast episode. The questions are listed below, so feel free to jump to the ones that interest you. Resources mentioned are also listed as well.   QUESTIONS: How large is an ideal volunteer force (let’s say a church of 1500 weekly) and what does the makeup look like? I.e. How many singers (of each type), band elements, and choir? Why don’t modern worship bands and singers use sheet music? It seems sheet music provides specific guidelines and clarity for what to play when, when to rest, what notes to sing, rhythms, cuttoffs, etc. Do you ever find sheet music useful at times? If so, when? How do you recommend on-boarding new members (vocal or band). Do you audition? Once someone is selected, is there a rehearsal process beyond a mid-week rehearsal before their first Sunday? How do you evaluate the sound while also participating in it? Traditionally a music director or choir director is listening to the sound so that they can critique and make changes. This is difficult to do while focusing also on your own sound, in ear mix, blend with other vocalists (to the extent there are any) etc. What are the tell tale signs of a thriving church music ministry? When you visit other churches, what are you looking for that will indicate a healthy program? What is your position on the music ministry raising up children/teens in music? Do you believe in a children’s music program? Children’s choir? If so, with what frequency do you incorporate them in the main auditorium service? Do you do anything like special music in your services? If so, how do you lead the congregation to know not to sing along, but to listen, enjoy, and connect to God silently? What is your ideal worship song selection template? We sometimes follow the upbeat > slow build > ballad > misc/hymn pattern. Would you recommend something different? If you don’t use sheet music, how do you instruct background vocal singers on what to sing and when to sing? Do you plan chords and teach parts to them at each rehearsal? Do you record preview tracks and put in planning center for them to listen to? How do you give specific direction and feedback with the intention of making the sound better, while still shepherding and loving the team well? When someone is failing (i.e. can’t perform up to standards musically) how do you address that if they really aren’t good enough to be on the team? What are the top 2-3 spiritual leadership practices you would recommend implementing in the worship ministry? What do you think is the biggest frustration for worship ministry volunteers? What drives away participation in the music ministry? Do you have any tips for how to transition between songs, especially of different styles like modern songs to traditional songs or the other way around? What are your favorite ways to train and equip vocalists? What does your worship ministry leadership structure look like? For instance, worship leaders, music/band director, service producer, etc. RESOURCES MENTIONED: FREE E-BOOK on Set Building Transitions – Why They Matter and How To Master Them     I'D LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU!  EMAIL ME your thoughts on this episode or ASK A QUESTION that you’d like us to answer on a future episode by calling +1-831-607-WLT1 Say hi on TWITTER, INSTAGRAM, or FACEBOOK Our Sponsor This Month – Planning Center Planning Center is the ultimate tool for scheduling teams, planning worship services, selecting song sets, communicating with team members, hosting chord charts and mp3's and so much more!  Sign up and get 30 days free at planning.center  Enjoy the podcast? Locked On Bulls is back from the weekend and the guys are back to help break down an incredibly wild weekend for the Bulls in what turned out to be a marathon game on Friday and a close loss on Sunday to the Atlanta Hawks. Jordan Maly and Matt Peck kick off the show talking about how they prepared Bulls fans on Friday's episode for what they might see offensively from both the Chicago Bulls and Atlanta Hawks this past weekend. The guys start off with some positive notes about Friday's four overtime win, 168-161 backed by Zach LaVine's career high 47-points. The guys talk about how the Bulls had multiple opportunities to close this game out in the fourth quarter and the first few overtimes and also how Atlanta had their fair share of opportunities to win this game.  Jordan and Matt seem to be split on the idea of this game being a solid win for this Bulls team. The guys discuss Lauri Markkanen's offense being absent in overtime, Zach LaVine having to take over, and Otto Porter also being stopped in the overtime periods. The guys discuss some critical mistakes by the players and coaching staff that contributed to the marathon of this game. Locked On Bulls talks about Trae Young's unbelievable night and how they were wrong about him last summer as a potential prospect. Locked On Bulls shift their focus to some more positives from the overtime win on Friday including the defense played by Lauri Markkanen and Zach LaVine. Jordan brings up some advanced analytics from the overtime periods that may surprise some listeners and also talk about what he saw from both Markkanen and LaVine late. The guys discuss how the Hawks adjusted to the Bulls two best scoring options on Friday as well as Kris Dunn fouling out in the first overtime period. The guys spend the back end of the episode discussing Sunday afternoon's game in which it looked as if both teams were still a bit gassed from Friday night. The guys talked about most notable storyline coming from this game in Trae Young being ejected and if they felt it was justified or not (hint, they don't think it was). Will Director Stu allow Writer Chas on his set? Following our annual wrap up in 2017, we’ve decided to once again explore what craft issues/lessons we can garner from the latest Stars, namely Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, focusing on how consequences of character actions can do a lot of heavy lifting as to how the audience perceives that character (as well as looking at worldview and overall story structure). We also discuss how the sexual assault allegations in our industry can impact on what work we choose to analyse as well as dive into a bunch of listener questions. We end on whether - if our space pirates project gets off the ground - Chas should come on set, whether Stu will have him and whether it would do anyone any good. It’s 2017 but it feels like 2007. The Williams sisters Serena and Venus are in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open on course to meet in the final, and Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal will also clash if they win two more tennis matches each. While Nadal put Gael Monfils away in four sets to set up a last 8 clash with the highest remaining seed Milos Raonic, Catherine Whitaker (Eurosport) and David Law (BBC 5 Live) sat in the Melbourne press room to discuss day 8 at the Australian Open on The Tennis Podcast. What did they think of the defending champion Angelique Kerber’s late-night loss on Sunday? How does the form of Jo Konta compare to Serena Williams, who she will face in the quarterfinals? And who is Mirijana Lucic-Baroni, who has also made the last 8? How much of a surprise is it to see Federer playing tennis like this after six months out of the game? We ask Goran Ivanisevic and Michael Chang. And is he going to go all the way here? There’s also some frustration with Monfils, a question mark... Paul continues his letter writing to a church in one of the largest, richest and most multi-ethnic cities of the Roman Empire. It is a church with great gifts and talents and a church with many problems!A study by the Barna group in the US a few years ago discovered that there had been a sea change in young people’s view of Christianity. Ten years earlier the vast majority were positive about Christianity. Now only 16% were! The three biggest charges against Christianity were judgemental (87%), hypocritical (85%) and old-fashioned (78%). Will asked the question on Sunday – How has it come to this? The most radical teacher the world has ever seen is now seen to be represented by people who are seen as judgemental, hypocritical and old-fashioned? The answer may start with passages such as the one in 1 Corinthians. To counter the charge made by those around us we need to re-capture the focus on beginning to be changed. We do this by beginning to walk in the Way of Jesus. This will involve our seeking to focus on Jesus and to start to live lives that are pleasing to Him. It doesn’t mean that we are perfect but it does mean that we start to try and reflect the love and the grace and forgiveness of Jesus In our daily lives.
