Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

My guest this week is the incredible Mississippi songwriter, guitarist and drummer Cedric Burnside.Cedric comes from a long family line of Hill Country blues musicians. His dad is the drummer Calvin Jackson and he is the grandson of the legendary R.L. Burnside, one of the great traditional Mississippi blues artists of all time. Cedric is an exceptional guitarist and songwriter who seems to have found a unique place in the landscape of modern music. He's able to make records that sound fresh and current, but is very much honoring the traditions of the Hill Country region. It's a totally unique style of music that you catch glimpses of with artists like John Lee Hooker and Jesse Mae Hemphill, but the really traditional music is even more specific than that. Born in the juke joints of Northern Mississippi, the music is usually driven by guitars and drums. It's hypnotic, relentless and so unpredicatble and exciting to see live. It's almost the kind of music that you'd think wouldn't translate that well to record, but in Cedirc's hands it does. He is also a fantastic drummer who has played with all kinds of artists including Jimmy Buffett, Widespread Panic, T-Model Ford, and The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, not to mention his grandfather R.L.. He has a bunch of albums out under his own name including the Grammy Award-winning “I Be Trying” from 2021 and the brand new “Hill Country Love”, both of which we get into in this episode. You can get all the info on the new album and his extensive worldwide tour dates at cedricburnside.net - Enjoy our conversation! This season is brought to you by our sponsors Larivée Guitars and Fishman AmplificationYou can join our Patreon here to get all episodes ad-free, as well as access to all early episodesThe show's website can be found at www.makersandshakerspodcast.comYour fearless host, Steve Dawson can be found at www.stevedawson.ca Get ad-free episodes and access to all early episodes by subscribing to Patreon. With seven studio albums and nearly a decade of touring under her belt, Askew has established herself as a relentlessly creative artist and a powerhouse of talent. She has become a festival favorite at eclectic live events and gained the attention from brands like Stetson, Wrangler, and Tecovas Boots, all of which have signed her on as a model/spokeswoman.   She mostly hits the road accompanied only by her truck, Wanda. Still, she has also supported legends like Hayes Carll, Ray Wylie Hubbard, James McMurtry, Lisa Marie Presley, Marty Stuart, Paul Thorn, Jesse Winchester, Colter Wall, the late Delta bluesman T- Model Ford, and Leon Russell. She is an internationally recognized tunesmith placing first in the International Songwriting Competition, the Unsigned Only Music Competition, and the John Lennon Songwriting Contest. Her lyrics weave vivid imagery of a life lived with authenticity and grit with a Faulknerian Southern-Gothic storytelling style, always paying homage to her Delta roots. Her television appearances include PBS' Sun Sessions and NBC's The Voice - Season 4, where she represented Team Blake. Since Jan. 1, 2018, Askew has written and live-streamed a new original song daily for her loyal Facebook and Instagram followers. This date also markers the day she decided to get sober. The Wasted Years

Original release date: 8/25/13 Original Episode notes: GravelRoad is a Seattle band steeped in the tradition of North Mississippi Hill Country Blues. Their passion for this music drove them to visit the region many times, befriending and playing with the families and stalwart performers of the style, the Kimbroughs and Burnsides among them. Through persistence and a little luck, they eventually became the touring band for T-Model Ford, crossing the country and world with the 90-plus year-old bluesman, leading to stories from the road quite unlike any others. In a strange coincidence, I met with GravelRoad to record this podcast on July 15th, 2013. The following morning, they received the news that T-Model Ford had passed away at his home in Greenville, Mississippi. They knew he was not in the best of health, and he had ceased touring about a year ago. At the time this podcast was recorded, it was not intended to be a eulogy. Still, the members of GravelRoad spoke with such reverence toward T-Model - the man, his mythology, and his music - that it almost feels fitting as such. So, I dedicate this podcast to the memory of T-Model Ford, one of the last great performers from a bygone era, whose music and spirit still live on in bands like GravelRoad. You can read T-Model Ford's obituary in the New York Times here. This podcast features the music of GravelRoad and the music of T-Model Ford with GravelRoad as his backing band. GravelRoad has just released their fourth album, "The Bloody Scalp of Burt Merlin," which can be purchased through Knick Knack Records. "I'm the Blues."

Super cool and passionate, Jim’s shares loads of great stories: Growing up in the Delta and learning his craft as part of a community of musicians, deliberately going out into the world to “get his ears wet,” and gain the experience needed to become a great songwriter… His relationship with Charlie Patton’s family, behind the scenes of the deep and intense songs on Incinerator, how he met Buddy Guy and some great Buddy stories, Spam, T Model Ford… legal battles that left him penniless and exhausted, and how he battled back - better than ever. GREAT energy & sincerity: Born into a musical family in a small town in the Mississippi Delta, Jim is a multi-instrumentalist who fused all the music of his family (Delta blues, gypsy jazz, klezmer, bluegrass, roots, swing and other styles) and founded the Squirrel Nut Zippers. The band had gold and platinum records, and their LPm Perennial Favorites was #18 on Billboard, and Hot, hit #27. Jim has also toured and recorded with Buddy Guy, and built a successful solo career, releasing 15 solo studio LPs, including his most recent LP, Incinerator, which is a beautiful record. He’s also performed as a sideman, done sessions and produced dozens of albums in the Roots / Americana genre Support this Show: http://www.everyonelovesguitar.com/support  Subscribe https://www.everyonelovesguitar.com/subscribe/  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/EveryoneLovesGuitar/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/everyonelovesguitar/

After a successful 10-year stint at Kodak, Lisa found herself befriending the owner of a vintage guitar shop in Memphis, TN. It was there that she began to exclusively photograph guitars. Since then, Lisa has photographed the guitars of Les Paul, Jimmy Page, Roger Waters, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, Eric Clapton, Lou Reed, Alex Lifeson, Geddy Lee, John Lee Hooker, Peter Frampton, Chrissie Hynde, Joe Satriani, Wayne Kramer, Michael Wilton, Phil Collen, Ace Frehley, Ted Nugent, Carlos Santana, Scotti Hill, Ben Harper, Bucky Pizzarelli, John Scofield, John Hiatt, Luther Dickinson, Dickey Betts, Warren Haynes, Lucky Peterson, Al Kooper, T-Model Ford, Robert Belfour, Steve Earle, Keb Mo, Nancy Wilson, Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill, Robbie Robertson, George Benson, Steve Vai, Jack White, SLASH, John Entwistle, Michael Monarch, Brian May, Derek Trucks, Johnny Winter, Brad Paisley, Willie Nelson, Richard Thompson, Gary Rossington, Joe Walsh, Robby Krieger, Mick Ronson, Bob Margolin, Hutch Hutchinson, Bonnie Raitt, Brian Setzer, Ian Anderson, Martin Barre, Zakk Wylde, Warren DiMartini, Dave Mustaine, Lemmy Kilmister, Phil Campbell, K.K. He's an accomplished potter and visual-artist, but most folks know him as an omni-present force on the Delta festival and jook joint circuit. The longtime sideman for country blues greats like Paul "Wine" Jones and T-Model Ford steps out on his own this week in a full band performance captured during Bridging The Blues and featuring Hans Theesink on second guitar. Also, BSC contributor John Paul Keith joins us again to continue his series, Made In Memphis.
