This week, we're REPLAYING our re-read MS. MARVEL - written by award winning novelist, and Muslim American G. Willow Wilson. Some would argue that MS. MARVEL was one of the most important books - and new characters Marvel comics has released in a decade. While her name might be familiar, everything else is "all new, all different" - because we're introduced to Kamala Khan, a Pakistani-American teenage girl - just trying to get her homework done, write fan-fic, play MMORPGs, figure out her relationship with her religious brother, come to terms with her best friends, and meet the expectations of her immigrant parents. After being exposed to the Terrigen Mists, Kamala gains morphogenic powers, which basically means he gains the abilities to stretch, shrink, embiggen, change shape, heal and other awesome stuff....she's like Plastic Man meets Wolverine, wrapped in spunky can-do teen girl attitude. So as you can imagine, hijinks ensue in the Tri-State Area. UNLIKE pretty much ALL of the superheroes in the Marvel Universe, our dear Kamala Khan does NOT live in New York City, but across the river in Jersey City. Joining us to talk about our new favorite Pakistani American superhero, is our new favorite Pakistani American geek Lena Shareef, co-host of the podcast GROUNDED GEEKS where Lena and her brother Aman talk just about the latest in geek/pop culture, but how it relates back to the world we live in today...
It's an hour of silence as we examine the Inhuman king BLACK BOLT! Just kidding, you know neither of us can shut up for that long… listen now! Intro Get in those questions for 150th AMA Go back & listen to episode 68 on Medusa for better understanding of the dynamic Background (1:44) Black Bolt (Blackagar Boltagon) created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in Fantastic Four #45 (Dec. 1965) Black Bolt is the Inhuman king - exposed to Terrigen Mists as an embryo, his voice has the ability to create massive, destructive waves of energy - he was placed in a soundproof chamber and taught to control his voice, even while sleeping Reenters Inhuman society at nineteen, and his brother Maximus makes a deal with the Kree to take over - Black Bolt shouts at the Kree ship, which crashes on the Inhuman parliament, killing his parents - the sound also drives Maximus mad, and he swears revenge on Black Bolt He ends up engaged to his distant cousin Medusa, who would visit him in confinement, and they fell in love He and Medusa oversee the assimilation of Inhumans into the larger world, and engage with many heroes and villains in the universe Had a child with Medusa, in defiance of the Genetic Council, who believed his bloodline was too dangerous to continue - he gave up his crown to be with his son Regained the crown and helped the Inhumans resettle on the Blue Area of the Moon Was a member of the Illuminati, a secret group of highly intelligent & powerful individuals that attempted to manipulate events from behind the scenes - came to the forefront in World War Hulk when they exiled Hulk from the planet, and he came back seeking revenge (later revealed that this was actually a Skrull imposter, and the real Black Bolt had been kidnapped some time before) Played a major role in Infinity, as he was the one who discovered Thanos' plan to kill his son Thane Inhumans vs. X-Men - Black Bolt's use of his sonic scream on Cyclops is what kicked off the major war (it was actually a mental projection of Cyclops created by Emma Frost, as Scott had died due to exposure to the Terrigen Mists) Death of the Inhumans - has his throat slit by Vox, but still able to use his scream to escape imprisonment and joined the Royal Family in attacking the Kree - this permanently damaged his voice, however Issues - Theme is communication (6:00) Black Bolt. Blackagar Boltagon. From the first time I read the classic Lee/Kirby Fantastic Four run, he has always fascinated me. The basic building block of social interaction among humans -- and insofar as we know -- Inhumans, is speech. From a philosophical standpoint, there is no organized society without verbal communication. It's everything. It is the singular most important element that serves to bring people together to work as one for a common purpose. So you take a person who -- it's not like he's unable to speak through deafness from birth restricting his ability to absorb what speech should sound like, or throat cancer or an injury to the larynx or something similar preventing his vocal cords from functioning properly. He is fully capable of exercising that most basic tenement of social interaction, but if he utters even the slightest whisper, even by accident, if he coughs or sneezes, he can destroy everything and everyone around him. There's no established canon limit on what the power of his voice can actually accomplish, but everyone pretty much understands even the slightest sound from him is potentially catastrophic. As if going through life from birth having to engage in so much rigorous physical and psychological training to never utter a sound -- not even accidentally in your sleep -- wouldn't create enough issues for you, let's add onto that: you're the king of an entire race of people, entrusted with all of the responsibilities of governing and the expectations of leadership that entails. Oh, and you accidentally killed the primary support system you had in your parents when you found your brother forging a pact with the aliens who were directly responsible for your powers and understandably lashed out. Ho -- lee -- crap. How the man didn't become a gibbering wreck with a death wish as soon as he was old enough to fully grasp all this is the stuff of miracles. I think the fact that Black Bolt even functions at all, much less as well as he does given the circumstances, is a testament to just how well the guy's got it all together. Let's just try to run down what I'm sure is not a complete list of this man's issues: 1) Severe isolation. Your terrigenesis turned you into a potential weapon of mass destruction on a civilization-ending scale. You spent most of your life from that point on having to be in complete isolation from others and undergoing rigorous physical and psychological training to never utter the slightest of sounds with your voice, even by accident. Just communicating yourself, your feelings, your wants, and your needs to other people is a grueling exercise at best. You have to constantly make yourself understood to others in a way that they typically don't. Think of all the things this implies. 2) Crippling guilt at the very real consequences your powers have brought. You don't have to imagine what will happen if you slip up. You know full well. You killed your parents with your voice. You didn't mean to, it was an accident, but it happened. You have a family, you have a wife, you have people that you care about who absolutely will be reduced to a fine pink mist by a weapon that is of your person, your very essence of being, that you have almost no control over. That is a gorgon that will haunt your soul forever. (15:32) 3) Overwhelming responsibility. You are not just trying to function as a part of a society you can't realistically fit into. You are its king. Every one of your people looks to you for leadership, and you have to run your society and make your wishes known without being able to easily communicate them. When you have to have a conversation with other people where you don't know what you're going to have to communicate in advance, you are fully reliant on others that you have to place your trust in to communicate for you. With all of the lack of nuance that implies. You don't just not have a physical voice, you don't have a metaphorical one either. It's Medusa, or Professor X, or someone else you have a psychic connection with acting on your behalf. That's terrifying on a deep personal level. (26:29) Like I said, the fact that this man functions at all is a great credit to his incredible mental fortitude. Break (35:25) Plugs for BetterHelp, Frigay the 13th, and Al Ewing Treatment (37:27) In-universe - Bring him to pocket universe that neutralizes Black Bolt's voice to allow him to speak in his own words Out of universe - What does a therapist do with a patient that is mute by choice? The real-world parallels, we talked about before. Deaf, hard of hearing, and mute people. Stroke victims. People with throat cancer or something else that necessitates an electronic voicebox. Hell, I'll even go so far as people residing in a country where they don't speak the prevailing language, and are reliant upon interpreters to perform basic interactions with others. It can be a constant, nonstop, terrifying journey through life when you just can't communicate with others on your own. And like I said, I plead ignorance, but I assume noncommunicative people need psychological counseling. I just have no idea how that's done, when verbal communication is such a vital part of the process. (43:41) Skit (feat. Anna from Freudian Sips) (50:14) DOC: Hello Black Bolt, I'm Dr. Issues. And hello again Medusa, thanks for joining us to interpret. Normally I don't do this, but given the… unique communication barriers here, it's helpful to have someone here. MEDUSA: Of course, Doctor, good to see you again as well. Black Bolt and I appreciate you taking the time to speak to us. D: Please understand, no offense, but this is not meant to be a couples' session. As an interpreter, your role is to make sure that Black Bolt's statements are provided as clear as possible. Therefore, I will be speaking and looking at him directly while you assist us. If there is anything that needs clarification, please let me know. M: *slightly irritated, but polite* Yes, of course, Doctor. *pause* Black Bolt says thank you. D: Great. Now, what can I help you with today? M: Black Bolt says he wants to make strides with the world at large…without disrupting his personal life. D: That sounds reasonable, albeit a bit vague. I'm aware that you have a large role in your kingdom. Is there a particular aspect of your job that you're struggling with? M: Black Bolt says that he detests the notion that society can't fix it's own ills. *pause* My apologies, he says that he wants… others to have more participation and involvement… so he doesn't have to carry most of the burden… himself. D: That makes sense. I emphasize appropriate delegation all of the time. Is there something that prevents you from having the kind of balance you envision? M: He says there are… too many functions to go through on a daily basis… that are set to the royal family by default. Tradition weighs us all down. *aside* Especially his wife. D: Well, based on what I know, although there is still a right to confidentiality for the details, I can say that dovetails well with your personal relationships. M: Black Bolt says that he…is thankful…someone finally understands…wait, I'm sorry, I need to start over. Black Bolt says he is thankful I finally understand him better now. D: Huh? M: Black Bolt wants to focus on… the loss of his free time. He is draining himself to serve… the people and serve his family. D: Oh…that took a bit of a turn. I'm sorry that things have been such a struggle. What are your coping mechanisms for recovery? M: Black Bolt says he enjoys time for…literature, and…taking walks with me. D: Aww, that's so kind…but he's shooting you a glare right now. What's up? M: He says that is not quite what he meant. He…likes…walking…alone…thinking about me. I apologize, he's going so fast now, it's hard to keep up. D: You seem very angry. Do we need to take a break? M: I'm just fine, doctor. D: I meant Black Bolt. Like I said, please just tell me what he is saying. M: Black Bolt says that…THINGS…aren't the way they are supposed to be right now. This is…slightly frustrating…If I weren't his queen I would be…somewhere less pleasant at the moment. D: Are you…are you censoring him? I would strongly advise you not to do that for the sake of any hope of progress. M: We apologize…as in, the royal we, because I have done nothing wrong…Black Bolt wishes to have an independent…NO. D: An independent what? M: An independent…point of view on how his emotions can be controlled OH MY! D: Well, I recognize what THAT finger means. It's obvious there's a breakdown here. Perhaps we all could use a time out. M: No, let's continue speaking. *clearly directed at Black Bolt* After all, it's good to get things off one's chest, right dear? BLACK BOLT: *snort* *gust of wind, small amounts of damage* D: No words necessary. And I DO mean that literally. Let's try this one more time M: Black Bolt says- D: *interrupting* Nope. No way. I see where this is going. I was a fool to think this wasn't a couples' session. No interpreter. Black Bolt…sir. I have no problem with you as a patient. But I also realize that I have put you in the most awkward situation imaginable. I'm sorry. We have to find another way to do this. I know you can write. Maybe secure email and text instead? Less hassle this way. M: Black Bolt says he…wants to keep trying…wait…keep trying how? I don't know how that works. D: What is it? M: So, this is me talking…he wants to make sure that you know I mean well, but tell you how I felt after my last session with you. But, I don't want to make it about me. That's not the point. D: So he's asking you something. That's fine. Ultimately, it's up to you. M: Black Bolt says this interaction is a microcosm of how he feels every day. Bottled up, locking away a part of him that no one ever gets to know because it's too dangerous. He…has to be a statesman as well as a man of action, without a proper outlet. He…oh. D: What? M: He wonders if that's what childhood was supposed to be. D: I don't have an answer for that. Your experience is so beyond what I could imagine. To have someone be your voice from day one, always refied, monitored, scrutinized, manipulated, and yet bearing witness to the multitude of variance that humans and Inhumans have likely described, knowing full well that would never be your lot in anything that goes on. That's strength…but also the potential for agony. You're quite the being, Black Bolt. The definition of life's beautiful struggle, and I thank you for what you endure. M: Black Bolt says…wait…he…Doctor I can't…I won't interpret what he is saying. D: Um…did I do something to offend him? M: No, please understand, what is about to happen is in a perverse way the highest honor he can bestow upon you, and we have means to make amends. D: I have no clue what you're talking about. M: I'll let him explain for himself. D: For hims… WAIT WHAT? BB: *whisper* thank you *explosion sound effect* D: I truly appreciate the definition of peace and quiet, now more than ever. Intro New #BecauseComics moment per episode Background (2:58) Crystalia Amaquelin created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in Fantastic Four #45 (Dec. 1965) She is unique among Marvel characters in that she has been a member of the Fantastic Four, Avengers, and Inhumans, as well as tangentially related to the X-Men Crystal is a member of the Inhuman Royal Family, sister to Queen Medusa, with the ability to control the elements She first encountered the Fantastic Four on the run from the Seeker, who wanted to destroy the Royal Family - saved by Johnny Storm, the two quickly fell in love When Sue Storm Richards was pregnant with Franklin and left the team, Crystal served as her replacement Left the team after discovering that her stay on Earth was poisoning her, as her Inhuman body could not handle the Earth's atmosphere, and she returned to Attilan, breaking up with Johnny In the process of Lockjaw teleporting her home, she encountered Quicksilver, who was injured battling Sentinels - she brought him home to the Great Refuge to help him recover, and over time they fell in love and announced their marriage They had a baby girl, Luna, who exhibited no powers - Crystal forced Pietro to agree that Luna would grow up normally Pietro's temper grates on Crystal, and she has an affair with Wanda & Vision's realtor, a human named Norman Webster - Norman ends the affair when he realizes Crystal is married, and Pietro initially refuses to attempt reconciliation She attempted to renew her relationship with Johnny, but she found he was married to Alicia Masters (actually a Skrull in disguise #BecauseComics), and when an Inhuman crisis endangered the entire family, she and Pietro eventually reconciled Joined the Avengers, and moved into the mansion with Luna and her nanny, Marilla During her tenure, she became close with Dane Whitman, the Black Knight, who was himself the target of Sersi's affections, all while Crystal and Pietro were working on reestablishing their relationship - this love quadrangle created many difficult situations, until Dane & Sersi were sent to another dimension After Heroes Reborn, Crystal and Pietro were reunited, but Dane also returned to the universe, and when Dane and Pietro later fought over Crystal, she left them both to return to Attilan to think After House of M, Pietro stole Terrigen Mists and exposed Luna, granting her powers - this act led to Black Bolt annulling the marriage She was then betrothed to Ronan (by Medusa) as part of an alliance between the Inhumans and the Kree - the marriage was quickly ended, however, as a deal was struck with Black Bolt and the Supreme Intelligence Made an Inhuman ambassador by Queen Medusa, leads the Royal Inhuman Diplomatic Mission Issues (9:10) Jeanine: Stepping away from royal family In the shadow of her older sister (19:17) Difficulty of being a super parent (25:12) Break (30:44) Plugs for BetterHelp, Scotch N Sports, and Al Ewing Treatment (32:42) In-universe - Bring in Captain Planet as a mentor Out of universe - Focus on emotional impact of making those important decisions (35:14) Skit (41:52) Doc: Hello Crystal, I'm Dr. Issues. Crystal: Hi Doctor. D: Thank you for meeting with me. I'm a little sad to see Luna's not here, though. C: She's with my family. For better or worse I have no shortage of babysitters. It helps to know so many folks with superpowers. D: Yes, you do have quite the list of friends and colleagues. C: Which is one of the things I wanted to talk to you about. D: OK, shoot. C: I've been an Avenger, a member of the Fantastic Four, one of the Inhuman Royal Family, and affiliated with the X-Men. I hardly have any peers who have those kinds of connections. And my powerset means I can control all of the elements. Yet I always feel like I'm not taken seriously enough. I'm either Medusa's kid sister, or worse yet Pietro's ex. D: So your primary issue is that of establishing an identity separate from those around you? C: Yes, exactly! D: I see. Well, my first thing I want to make clear is that being part of these groups isn't necessarily a bad thing, and- C: Oh I'm well aware, and I apologize if it came across as such. I'm proud to be included in these rosters. The relationships I've built over the years mean the world to me, and I wouldn't trade them for anything. It's just… that's not *all* of who I am. D: That's certainly frustrating, and I see why- C: And that's what few people understand. Pietro understood that...understands that? I don't know...we've gone back and forth so many times. He's so impulsive. I want him to slow down sometimes, but that's not who he is, and then that makes me realize that I wasn't understanding him...oh, it burns me up inside! *flame sound effect* D: Relationships that are frayed don't have to be completely incinerated...like you just did to that insurance form. Can we - C: Oh no! I didn't mean to take it out on your possessions! That reminds me of when I talk to Johnny. It's weird. We work as great friends, but I sometimes go down a ‘what-if' rabbit hole if I had built something special with him. But that's not fair to him either. My mind is a tornado right now *wind noises* D: I see...how demonstrative. *clearly frustrated* I'll just restack those files a bit later. It sounds like you have tied so many parts of who you are to other people, that it even becomes tiresome for you to differentiate your motivations from those around you. How do you cope with that? C: I make time for myself. At least, I used to. I'm not an absentee parent. Luna comes first. When I get a chance like this, I seem to be out of sorts. *water effects gently throughout her speech* I get flooded with thoughts of how she's doing, if I'm missing something, if I should have pushed for more co-parenting, If I'm pawning her off too much. Am I making any sense? D: *barely hiding his frustration* I am awash with inspiration on how to help you...and so are my shoes. The anxiety of parenting never goes away, but rest assured that one of the best things you can show your child is letting them face some of their own challenges. C: *angry* Challenges?! She was kidnapped before! Caring for Lockjaw is a challenge! No, I won't be a helicopter parent, but do you know what it's like to lose the most important thing to your soul? You question reality. *earthquake effects* The ground you walk on might as well swallow you whole. Everyone judges you left and right. You judge yourself...harshly. It's not fair. It's not fair to her, or to me. I can stand on my own without a royal say-so- D: CRYSTAL! STOP! C: Huh? D: *Exhausted, but calm* Please...stop. I got the message. I've never had a patient connect so viscerally to everything that's going on in their psyche. This is a private session, but it may be the greatest public example of what makes you...you! C: So it's just my powers? D: NO! No. It's the emotional intelligence fluidity. You are able to adapt to those around you and feel just as comfortable on a new team as well as with old friends. New bonds are capable of being as strong, or stronger, than prior relationships. That's a trait that not everyone comes by easily. But there's an obvious peril with that. You're always navigating a shifting hierarchy of personal priorities. That can be exhausting. C: *sarcastic* You don't say? I just… I don't want to BE my sister, but sometimes I envy the straightforward manner with which she deals with situations. She's the queen. Everyone knows that, so there's no wishy-washiness. With me, it all depends on who it is and what they need. I know you're saying that's a good thing, but uggghhhh is it draining. D: I get that. And I'm grateful that wasn't accompanied by another power flux. What I would encourage you to do is to take a look at each relationship in your life, and determine how important it is to you. You don't have to rank each one individually, maybe just use a few tiers. Then, if you're in a situation where you have a choice to make, utilize the tiers to determine which one takes precedence. And let's not forget about your own needs as well. C: Hmm. Interesting idea. Well, it can't be any worse than what I've been doing so far. Which is winging it. D: Much of life is winging it, but with a bit more wisdom each time. The course corrections are less tricky with every turn. C: I understand. Thanks for the advice, and sorry for the damage to the office. You can send the bill to Black Bolt. At least we know he won't yell about it *heehee* Ending (47:32) Recommended reading: Avengers: Bloodties, War of Kings Next episodes: Emma Frost, Starfire, Children of super villains Plugs for social References: Medusa episode - Anthony (4:02) South Park “Feelin' good on a Wednesday” - Anthony (9:06) Don Cheadle is Captain Planet - Anthony (34:04) Apple Podcasts: here Google Play: here Stitcher: here TuneIn: here iHeartRadio: here Spotify: here Twitter Facebook Patreon TeePublic Discord

Character Corner - A Podcast on Your favorite Comic Book Characters
We’re back with another Character Corner and this time we’re covering the Inhumans. First off, let’s make it clear that we’re mainly focused on the Royal Family of the Inhumans. The “Nuhumans” or the Inhumans created on earth due to the Terrigen bomb that Black Bolt sets off during the events of Infinity are definitely a separate category. We might cover some of the more famous “Nuhumans” in a later episode. But for this, we’re focused mostly on the Royals: Black Bolt - The King with a voice that’s so powerful it can destroy planets Medusa - The Queen with serious hair issues Maximus the Mad - The king’s mad brother who can also control minds Crystal - Medusa’s sister with elemental powers Gorgon - Head of security and has bull’s legs and hooves that can create intense earthquake like shockwaves Triton - He’s a giant fish. Think Klaus from American Dad with legs and arms Karnark - Chief strategist and hasn’t been exposed to the mists so he technically doesn’t have powers. But he has developed an extrasensory ability to perceive stress points, weaknesses and faults in objects and people Lockjaw - The teleporting family pet dog who we’re pretty sure was a normal looking human being before he was exposed to the mists a turned into a pet We settled on going through the history of the Inhumans because of the new TV show coming out. Right now it doesn’t seem to be getting great reviews from the IMAX screening of it (a stupid idea to do anything cheap and in IMAX) but I’ve heard that it’s not that bad from others who have seen it. I will say this, after going through some early Inhumans comics, I can definitely see why (even out side of the technical aspects of the TV show), doing a show centered on the Royal Family is hard to do on TV. I will be blunt: Early Inhumans comics are not good. They are a struggle to read and the includes the Marvel Knights series by Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee. The problem with early Inhumans stories is that they focus on trying to make the Inhumans earth-based and it just doesn’t work. There are too many unlikable qualities about the Royal Family to do this. First off, they have slaves. The Alpha Primitives that run the lower areas of Attlian are slaves, 100%. The Inhumans also seem to strive for perfection with genetic manipulation and purity (the whole point of the Terrigen Mists in their minds) and it’s very creepy. Now these could definitely make for, and at times do, great stories or interactions. The problem is that most of the older stories also try to paint the Inhumans in the light of being victims of everyone else. To be blunt, its hard to see slave masters and genetic manipulators as victims. It's not all bad though. What the early Inhumans books and story do is weave a complex tale of a population and their rulers and the struggles to figure out who they are and what their purpose is. There are some good stories and threads throughout but if you're looking for a group that are clearly heroes and that you root for, you're going to be disappointed. They're not the X-Men. Not even close. Things change for the better around the time of Secret Invasion and that’s when it becomes clear: The Inhumans and Royal Family are at their best when they’re cosmic. Once the Inhumans really go cosmic and pretty much focus on that, they become interesting and great to read. Not to mention, in space, Black Bolt is finally unchained and can be seen using his powers more frequently and uninhibited. When the Inhumans wipe out the Skrulls then take over the Kree Empire, it's when they're at their best. The War of Kings storyline then Relam of Kings are also really good stories. If Inhumans fails on TV then I can only assume that the next attempt for Marvel will be to reintroduce them in the movies through James Gunn and his dive into the cosmic side of Marvel. That's where they work best. Listen to our whole Character Corner to get the full run down on th...

The least informed comic book podcast returns the week before the much anticipated 2015 Rose City Comicon in Portland Oregon. Nickel has flaked out, and the guys spend a significant amount of time discussing the great betrayal. After the details of Nickel's absence from Portland are discussed, and VF shoulders the responsibility of representing Graphic Novice in Portland we move onto the aftermath of VF's 40th birthday, and our attempt to piss off Jason Brigger. VF almost picks a fight with Ryan Beagley, Nickel questions the format of the show, VF's chickens, Sue's Coffee, and Nickel's appearance on the Podcast Without Borders, episode #31 (not necessarily in that order). In comic news, we discuss Rachel McAdams hotness, the five books being cancelled by DC comics, contraversay surrounding friend of the show, Greg Capullo, the X-Men and the Terrigen Mists, and at long last, comic sales for July 2015. The Graphic Novice Comic Book then introduces a new segment... VF vs. Marvel Comics Trivia! In "Rapid Fire Review" we discuss the comics that were born unto this world on September 2 & September 9, including Broken World #4, Detective Comics #44, Green Lantern #44, The Empty #6, Lazarus #19, We Stand On Guard #3, Daredevil #18, Silk #7, Lantern City #5, Batman #44, Earth 2 Society #4, Deadly Class #16, Outcast #12, and Starve #4. We wrap things up with a look ahead to the comics being released on September 16, 2015, and a final look ahead towards Portland. Thank you so much once again for spending some time with us.
