It's time for peak The Punsiher everyone. In 2008 under the Marvel Knights brand Lionsgate attempted another Punisher rebooted with Ray Stevenson stepping into the role of Frank Castle. It wasn't recieved well at the time nor did it perform well at the box office despite, in hindsight, it being an incredible fun and gory time at the movies. Director Lexi Alexander managed to craft what feels like the truest on screen adaptation of the character we've ever seen and even manages to include the likes of Jigsaw, with a suitably unhinged performance from Dominic West. Episode 54 - Murdock and Marvel: 2001 Part 2 The year 2001 has a dark shadow over it, and there are elements of this year that are pretty rough, because as the year closed comic books were trying to make sense of and deal with 9/11 just like the rest of America. But the start of the year brought a lot of great entertainment and for the first time in years sales held steady (mostly) This is part 2 of the podcast. that will feature the year in Daredevil, the Spotlight story and the Takeaway for 2001. The Year in Daredevil Appearances: Daredevil #14-26, Daredevil / Spider-Man #1-4, Daredevil: Yellow #1-5, Daredevil: Ninja #2-3, Marvel Knights #7-9 and #11-15, Black Widow #2-3, Spider-Man and Mysterio #1-3, X-Men #109, Big Town #4, Deadpool #52, Black Panther #31, Elektra #1, Ultimate Marvel Team-Up #7-8, 100 Greatest Marvels of All Time #1 and 4, Marvel Masterworks: Daredevil #2 and Marvel Masterworks: The Mighty Thor #3. Writing: David Mack (#14-15), Brian Michael Bendis (#16-19 and #26) Bob Gale (#20-25) Pencils: Joe Quesada and David Ross (#14), Ross (#15 and #23-25), David Mack (#16-19), Phil Winslade (#20-22), Alex Maleev (#26) Inks: Mark Morales (#14-15) David Mack and Morales (#15) Mack and Pond Scum (#17) Mack (#18-19), James Hodgkins (#20-22), Hodgkins and Mark Pennington (#23), Pennington (#24-25), Alex Maleev (#26) After the wrap-up of the Parts of a hole storyline that included a trail of Kingpin before he's eventually blinded by Maya Lopez aka Echo, we get our first story from Brian Michael Bendis with David Mack moving over to art. The 4-book story, Titled Wake Up, is a fantastically told and beautifully brought to page by the creative team. It doesn't really have any action and is really only loosely about Daredevil. Interesting, right? This is, without a doubt, worth spotlighting this week – so we'll talk more about it then. The other main story we get this year is called Playing to the Camera in which Daredevil is sued by rich philanthropist Samuel Griggs and wants to retain Nelson and Murdock (specifically Matt Murdock) as his lawyer. Matt reluctantly agrees as he knows he wasn't involved with destroying the man's greenhouse and plants and wants to figure out who's behind it. As Daredevil, he hires a lawyer and they have their days in court surrounded by a media circus. The trial ends with 3 daredevils in the courtroom - Murdock as himself holding a video tape of himself as Daredevil earlier that morning, Peter Parker in a Daredevil costume with the defense attorney and a third Daredevil who crashes a window, admits to the property damage, offers the $50k needed to fix it and then reveals his true identity as Terrance Hillman. Confused? So is Murdock and Nelson. Apparently, Hillman decided on his own to dress up as Daredevil and crash the courtroom. He then used the reveal and announced retirement to swing fame and fortune (and help out the real Daredevil). We also learn that Hillman didn't destroy the property either and that the Ringmaster was behind everything. He was testing his ability to implant false memories in people. One interesting side note about the first issue of the Playing with Camera storyline. A second story appears in the issue “My Brother's Keeper” written by Stan Lee and Kevin Hall with art by Gene Colan. In the short story, we see Daredevil and Spider-Man during a night out. We did get one more book in December from Brian Michael Bendis but we'll save that for next year's discussion. Finally In Daredevil: Yellow we get a 6-book story in which Matt is writing letters to the late Karen Page about the early days of Daredevil and the Nelson and Murdock law firm as a way to find forgiveness for everything that happened between them. The story, by Jeph Loeb, artist Tim Sale and colors by Matt Hollingsworth, is another retailing of the first handful of issues from Daredevil volume 1 that ends with the Purple Man story and Matt finding the forgiveness he needs. Episode 52 - Murdock and Marvel: 2000 Part 2 The new millenium started with some big endings, and comic book sales kept slipping this year. But 2000 featured some big developments that would point the way to the future of comics. Welcome to the Oughts, everyone! This is part 2 of the podcast. that will feature the year in Daredevil, the Spotlight story and the Takeaway for 2000. The Year in Daredevil Appearances: Daredevil #10-13, Earth X #10-12 and X, Fantastic Four #27, Avenger #27, Essential Fantastic Four #3, Marvel Knights #5-6, Daredevil: Ninja #1, Maximum Security #1, and Nick Fury: Agent of Shield graphic novel. Writing: David Mack (#10 – 11 and 13), Quesada and Palmiotti (12) Pencils: Joe Quesada (#10 – 11 and 13), Rob Haynes (12) Inks: Jimmy Palmiotti (#10 – 11), Rob Haynes (12), Mike Morales (13) A very light year for Daredevil as the main run only released four books this year – all part of the Parts of a Hole storyline started in December 1999. The story would continue until March 2001 when Parts of a Hole conclusion called Vision would reach stores. Visions will be our spotlight for this week. Issue 12, Gun Play, feels like a fill-in story covering a series of vignettes about Hell's Kitchen residents (featuring some very adult themes) while Echo and Daredevil fight rooftop-to-rooftop that was written by Joe Quesada and Jimmy Palmiotti, with art by Rob Haynes. Although it was well written, it does stall the pacing of the story for an issue. Outside of the main title, many of the Daredevil appearances this year were reprints including the Daredevil Visionaries: Frank Miller collection that was released in October which included 10 stories from the Frank Miller era and a second printing of the Punisher kills the Marvel Universe graphic novel. One other original story was started in December and spilled over into 2001 - Daredevil: Ninja which was a limited series written by Brian Michael Bendis and Rob Hayes that saw Daredevil dealing with the Hand and reuniting with Stone in Japan. When the scene shifts back to New York, Baby Karen (From Daredevil Vol.2 #1-8) turns out to be the next great hero of Japan. When Joe Quesada and Jimmy Palmiotti were handed creative control over some of Marvel's B- and C-list characters in 1998, they offered the job of writing Black Panther to Christopher Priest…who didn't want the assignment! But Priest was eventually convinced to take Quesada and Palmiotti's Coming to America-inspired suggestion to bring T'Challa to Brooklyn and turn it into a radical reinvention of the character, years ahead of its time in merging superheroes with international political intrigue. Much of the basis for the MCU's mega-popular take on Black Panther and Wakanda begins in this run, but Priest was convinced it wouldn't work without a white point-of-view character directly inspired by one of TV's Friends. We look at one of the sharpest, funniest, most daring ongoing series of the Iron Age.

Punisher: War Zone is a 2008 vigilante action-thriller film based on the Marvel Comics character the Punisher, directed by Lexi Alexander. Rather than a sequel to 2004's The Punisher, the film is a reboot that follows the war waged by vigilante Frank Castle / Punisher (Ray Stevenson) on crime and corruption, in particular on the disfigured mob boss known as Billy "Jigsaw" Russotti (Dominic West).[6] It is the third feature film adaptation of The Punisher, the second reboot thereof and the first of two films to be produced under the Marvel Knights production banner, which focuses on films for mature audiences. Punisher: War Zone was released in North America by Lionsgate on December 5, 2008, and it was released in the United Kingdom by Sony Pictures Releasing on February 6, 2009 to negative reviews and grossed $10 million worldwide, making it a box-office bomb. Its related soundtrack hit the #23 slot on Billboard's Top Independent Albums chart. It was the final Punisher film to be produced by an outside studio before the rights reverted to Marvel Studios, with Stevenson reprising his role as Castle in The Super Hero Squad Show. A television series was later released on Netflix in 2017 and is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. MC references this article in the episode: https://www.forbes.com/sites/lisettevoytko/2020/06/11/the-creator-of-the-punisher-wants-to-reclaim-the-iconic-skull-from-police-and-fringe-admirers/?sh=2ab6c3b1b434
Much like Steve Austin, the Six Million Dollar Man, Chuck Austen can just about do it all. He's been a writer, artist, creator, animator, and producer over his roughly 40 years in entertainment. But Chuck started as a comics artist, starting at Eclipse and had a short stint on Alan Moore's formative Miracleman series. He subsequently did more mostly indie work before taking a comics hiatus to work on King of the Hill. Roaring back with Marvel Knights, he illustrated the initial run on the new Elektra series and then wrote and illustrated U.S. War Machine, which was controversial for its violence and politics. He transitioned to mostly a writer from there, taking on Uncanny X-Men, Captain America, The Avengers and more at Marvel, and then Superman: Metropolis and Action Comics for DC. After creating comics of his own (like Edgeworld and Flywires), Chuck is mostly back in animation now, producing shows like Dragons: The Nine Realms and She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. You can follow him at his website: chuckleausten.com. _________________Check out a video version of this episode on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits.If you like this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. FLASHBACK! In 1998, under the “Marvel Knights” banner, Christopher Priest began the first ongoing Black Panther title in nearly two decades. Panther was a relatively unknown character to many Marvel readers at the time. With the aid of “Emperor of Useless White Boys” Everett K. Ross, and artists like Mark Texeira and Joe Jusko, Priest … Continue reading #689 Priest's “Black Panther”
Marvel Knights is an imprint of Marvel Comics that deals with more mature themes than the regular imprint. A production arm of Marvel Studios that produces some of Marvel's darker and lesser-known titles. The only films released under the Marvel Knights banner are Punisher: War Zone and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. Episode 60 - Black Panther - The Story Thus Far This week we are going far back in Marvel history to take a look at the first appearance of the Black Panther, stopping for a bit in the 70s to see the arrival of Killmonger, and then finishing up with a look at Black Panther vol 3 from the late 90s. This Week In Comics Tom King and Peter Gross Team Up with BOOM! Studios for Animal Pound https://www.cbr.com/animal-pound-tom-king-peter-gross-boom-studios/ New on Marvel Unlimited this Week https://www.marvel.com/comics/calendar/week/2023-08-27 Recommendation: WHY WAKANDA MATTERS by Dr. Sheena C. Howard https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/692340/why-wakanda-matters-by-sheena-c-howard-phd/ This Week's Stack Fantastic Four #52 Jungle Action #6 Black Panther Vol 3 #1-12 (but mostly 9-12) Creator Profile: Christopher Priest 2 Minute Recap and Discussion Topics Fantastic Four #52 (and #53) The Panther starts out as a bad guy? Ben is really, really awful in these books. Sort of the designated racist of the FF. Duane learned a bit about Maximus, Medusa, Crystal and met Gorgon and Karnak for the first time The person without super powers – Wyatt Wingfoot – saves the day by freeing Johnny Storm and by extension the rest of the FF. Jungle Action #6 (and #7) Killmonger is angry from the start T'Challa is shown to be trapped between duties to two worlds There's a really cool page of maps - the Land of Wakanda and Central Wakanda included as the last page of this book McGregor and artist P. Craig Russell were behind the first interracial romantic kiss in mainstream comics, which happened in a 1975 Killraven story. Black Panther Vol 3 #1-12 Part of the Marvel Knights imprint. Somewhat confusing Storytelling in that the entire story is being told by Everett Ross to his boss (and partner Nikki – office of the chief of protocol) Some fantastic things happen across 12 books, Go to hell with Memphisto, get captured by Kraven the Hunter, Dealing with the White Wolf – a sorta half brother, saves an ex from death – Monica Lynne, has a run-in with the Avengers and defeats a guy trying to take over Wakanda while he's away. Oh and save his step-mother. Does seem like there was some additional context in books outside Black Panther – Captain America specifically? Apparently there's not. Art style is really interesting in this series. Especially given everything that happened. Really cool seeing the Avengers Incident issue (book #8) is drawn old school for the first 6 pages. In the late '90s, Marvel was struggling through a bankruptcy and looking for innovative ways to boost sales and find a wider audience. They turned to hot artists Joe Quesada and Jimmy Palmiotti, who enlisted their pal, indie screenwriter and director Kevin Smith, to relaunch Daredevil to mainstream media coverage. The success of the Marvel Knights line led to a new era at Marvel and paved the way for more high-profile creators outside of the industry to try their hand at comics, which makes this series a crucial transition point to the post-Iron Age. But how does Smith's "Guardian Devil"—which combines Vertigo-style religious themes, controversial character deaths, and homages to Frank Miller's run so blatant that they're remarked upon in the text itself—hold up today?

On episode 319 of the BlockHash Podcast, comic book writer and Eisner Award winner Paul Jenkins joins Brandon Zemp to chat about his endeavors in the NFT space with his new project called “Another Path”. British writer Paul Jenkins, born on December 6, 1965, is a versatile artist who has worked in various fields such as comic books, screenwriting, novel writing, and narrative directing. He has achieved great success in the American comic book market and has made significant contributions to Marvel Comics, where he played a key role in shaping the company's characters and helped them out of bankruptcy through the Marvel Knights imprint before shifting his focus to independent publications. Let's go down the Paul Jenkins hitlist, shall we? He edited Eastman's and Laird's Mirage Studio books, including TMNT; he served as EIC for Tundra Publishing, Majestic Entertainment, and Scoreboard Comics; then he decided to write. Like many other British writers before and since, Paul broke in on a little Vertigo title called Hellblazer. Next, after some horror work at Marvel, he helped launch the Marvel Knights imprint with Jae Lee on the groundbreaking Inhumans limited series. Then it was off to the races with the introduction of The Sentry (also with Jae Lee), long runs on The Incredible Hulk and Peter Parker: Spider-Man, and a small project called Origin. Of course, that would be enough for someone's whole career, but Paul has continued writing for Marvel, DC, and Image, not to mention multiple video games and his own Kickstarter-backed series Fairy Quest. We're exhausted just thinking about his career! You can follow Paul on all the socials, including Twitter @mypauljenkins and Instagram @pauljenkinswriter. _____________________________________________Check out a video version of this episode on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits.If you liked this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts.
