On today's episode, I talk to artist Jamie McKelvie. Born in London, Jamie came to prominence in the world of comics through his collaborations with Kieron Gillen. In 2003, the two started a comic strip in PlayStation Magazine that lasted for three years. This led to their book Phonogram in 2006, and its subsequent sequels, as well as Young Avengers and The Wicked + The Divine. He's also illustrated stories and designed characters for Marvel on books like Cable, The Defenders, X-Men, Captain Marvel and Ms Marvel among others and created art for bands such as CHVRCHES, Art Brut and Tegan & Sara. Most recently, Jamie has been writing and drawing his own series One for Sorrow, which is being published by DSTLRY! Welcome to the fifteenth episode of Best Issue Ever! Today's guest is Jeremy Whitley, who has written many comics! He has brought us Young Avengers #1, written by Kieron Gillen, featuring art by Jamie McKelvie, and lettering by Clayton Cowles! No joke, Jeremy has written a LOT, so we'll condense it for the purpose of this bio but check out his work! He's been behind books like Marvel's Unstoppable Wasp, as well as creating originals like The Cold Ever After and Navigating With You, which we talk about here. This podcast is recorded in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It is edited by Sara Century. The theme music is provided by Earth Control Pill, whose work is on Bandcamp. Welcome true believers to X-Men Horoscopes where each week our host Lodro Rinzler is in conversation with a special guest to discuss the X-Men issue that aligns with a significant month and year from their life and what that issue reveals about their future. This week legendary X-Writer Kieron Gillen joins our host Lodro Rinzler for a very special episode entitled "The X-Office is an Anarchist Commune." We discuss, not surprisingly, what it was like behind the scenes during the recent Krakoa era, the Fall of X, and how Xavier was right (?). Kieron was born right as Thunderbird died so we dive into the epic story told in X-Men 94 + 95. Also in this episode: - Kieron has emotional contraceptives for that the overlap between Hickman and Gillen writing styles the X-Men are forged into...the Breakfast Club the death and rebirth of Thunderbird how Count Nefaria is somehow the primary x-villain this season on the show In the Q&A section we cover who the DJ was on Krakoa, how Selene loves to eat people and what the X-Men would be like as a sitcom. Also: Power Fantasy, Kieron's BRAND NEW comic, is out...TODAY! Go get it! Like, today today! Kieron Gillen first came to attention as a comic creator with his 2006's Phonogram, with Jamie McKelvie. Jamie and he formed into a gestalt monster that rampaged against the next fifteen years of comics, culminating with critical and smash hit the Wicked + the Divine. When not with Jamie, he has co-created books such as DIE, The Ludocrats, Once & Future, Three, Uber and more. When not making his own worlds, he has worked on Marvel Comics biggest books, such as Uncanny X-Men, Young Avengers, Thor, Iron Man, Star Wars, Eternals and Darth Vader, (where he co-created Doctor Aphra). You can follow along with Kieron's work by buying Power Fantasy TODAY(!) and signing up for his newsletter here. More of Lodro Rinzler's work can be found here and here and you can follow the podcast on Instagram at xmenpanelsdaily where we post X-Men comic panels...daily. It's been a while since we had one of our inspiration episodes, where we take a look at material outside of the CtD canon that we find helpful for grokking the themes of the game. We've had novels and spoopy novels, but in this episode (#THE ANSWER) we're turning to graphic novels and other visual narratives of the comic form. A professor might say, pairing text with image creates its own kind of media experience for the reader, tickling a particular set of imaginative centers in the brain that are good for conceptualizing the intricate mytho-fictive narratives of the game. But more simply put, MOAR COMIX BETTER GAME. (And even if you don't think of yourself as a "comics reader," these are worth a look.) The full list: Neil Gaiman with various artists, Sandman (and assorted spinoffs) — the original fan annotations website is archived here, but there is also an official Annotated Sandman out from DC Kieron Gillen and Stephanie Hans, DIE — and see the tie-in roleplaying game here! Jack Kirby and Stan Lee and so many others, X-Men Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda, Monstress Winsor McCay, Little Nemo in Slumberland (and variations on the title) — in the public domain, so you can see many of the old strips (along with the excellent Krazy Kat) at the Comic Strip Library [bonus! Jamie McKelvie, Suburban Glamour] Alan Moore, Watchmen — there was a film adaptation and everything, but here's the 80s cartoon the world deserved Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples, Saga — we're not going to link to merchandise websites, but you can get resin statues of plushies of the Lying Cat, if you so desire (and really, why wouldn't you?) Chris Ware, Jimmy Corrigan, the Smartest Kid on Earth Bill Watterson, Calvin and Hobbes Bill Willingham and (mostly) Mark Buckingham, Fables And then as usual, another list, where you can rail about how right or wrong we were about this list (although take note—limiting ourselves to eleven was tough, and we acknowledge there's a lot more out there): Discord: https://discord.me/ctp Email: podcast@changelingthepodcast.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100082973960699 Mastodon: https://dice.camp/@ChangelingPod Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/changelingthepodcast If you join our Discord, feel free to send us your suggested stats for Hobbes the Lycian, or vote on which sidhe Houses you think Xavier and Magneto would fall into, or just talk about the episode to your hearts' contentments. our hosts Josh Hillerup (any pronoun) often trips over speech balloons and tumbles through the fourth wall. Pooka G (any pronoun/they) defies the square panel as a convention of story-binding, favoring instead the trapezoid. "Let's see if we can call time on this trend by demanding and creating big, wild comics which stretch our imaginations. Let's make living breathing, sprawling adventures filled with mind-blowing images of things unseen on Earth. Let's make artefacts that are not faux-games or movies but something other, something so rare and strange it might as well be a window into another universe because that's what it is." —Grant Morrison

Before she was Captain Carter, her name was simply… Agent. From her first appearance on Captain America: The First Avenger, Peggy Carter been a fan favorite and a groundbreaking female character that breaks free of the “love interest” archetype. Today, Caroline and Bridgette revisit how the Agent Carter television series fleshed out her character alongside an eclectic, multifaceted cast and explored complex themes of war, grief, and what it means to be a woman in the past and present. Additionally, Bridgette shares her wild theory about how Bradley Whitford's character Flynn could hint at What If? continuing the plot threads left behind by the Agent Carter season three that never came to be. If you're like us and waiting impatiently for Captain Carter's next MCU appearance, read Jamie McKelvie and Marika Cresta's Captain Carter comic series: https://www.marvel.com/comics/series/34322/captain_carter_2022 Disclaimer: occasional background noises are courtesy of Bridgette's autistic sister. On today's episode, I talk to Eisner Award-winning comics writer Kieron Gillen. Originally from Stafford in the West Midlands of England, Kieron began his writing career as a games journalist, writing for publications like PC Gamer UK, Wired, The Guardian among others. HIs early comics work included a comic strip with Jamie McKelvie, which started their long and celebrated working partnership that led to incredible comics like Phonogram, Young Avengers and The Wicked + The Divine. While Kieron's works are too numerous to name, some of his best knows comics include his Uncanny X-Men run, Die, Star Wars: Darth Vader, Star Wars: Doctor Aphra, Loki: Journey Into Mystery, and most currently Eternals, Immortal X-Men and the massive crossover Judgment Day! “You find a lot out about yourselves from watching films.” Lauren, Martin (aka Dok) and Iain from Chvrches talk about the horror movies that influenced their new album Screen Violence, why they dropped album hints on their Letterboxd profile, and their five (!) favorite films: The Exorcist (“you can still get people with that film”); A Nightmare on Elm Street; Scream; Carrie and Get Out. Plus, they tell hosts Gemma (Letterboxd editor-in-chief) and Slim (of 70mm podcast) about remixing John Carpenter, Lauren's career as a multiplex employee, Kevin Williamson and '90s teen supremacy, watching movies on tour, the secret etching on their new vinyl, the new Candyman, “The Wire effect”, and why He's All That is all that. This is just a quick and fun bonus episode with a couple of "fan questions" that we didn't have time to put into the regular episode. My fiancé is a HUGE fan of Jamie's work, so I let him give me specific questions to ask :) Enjoy!
Somehow, we've stumbled into a bit of a family affair on this week's episode. Brothers Andre and Antonio will take on each other (as well as Will) in a pop culture battle of chain restaurants and calendars. In round one, our players will decipher the mashed up titles of movies or tv shows with popular American chain restaurants. Our players have a rocky start, but get a bit of a jumpstart once we flip open the calendar with a sequencing game: put the three movies or TV episodes in order of when they take place on a calendar. A stiff lightning round caps off a contentious game, but will the years of family beefs be squashed? If you are enjoying the episodes, be sure to check us out over on the show's Patreon page!
