This was recorded in April 2024, so some topics that were raised may be a little outdated (been to Korea btw). When you think of the term 'fruit and veg', what comes to mind? Grocery shopping? The food pyramid? A healthy lifestyle? Something I need more of? Well for people like Thanh, it's something that really excites him. So much that he was donned the name 'The Fruit Nerd' from his mates. His mission is to revolutionise how we see and enjoy fresh produce. After listening to this, I hope that you can appreciate some of the work that goes behind the scenes for grocers to have produce stocked on the shelves. Thanh is an incredible story teller and shares many stories of his fruit experiences and his tips and tricks for fruit/veg. If you want the full encyclopaedia, be sure to check out his recently released book 'Don't Buy Fruit & Veg Without Me!' Honestly a good read and I don't read books that often. It has heaps of tips/tricks, recipes and stories that go along with it. I wasn't paid to say that but Thanh very kindly sent me a book for free. The review is all my words.

It started as a nickname - 'Fruit Nerd' - given to him by his friends, but his love of fresh fruit made sure it would stick. The son of a fruiterer, Thanh Truong is now a produce expert and a big believer that eating with our eyes is a mistake. Thanh reckons "food is an adventure" and he's committed to getting people to, quite simply, eat more produce. Which seems like an easy enough sell...until you hear that one of his favourite fruits is the very controversial Durian. Thanh's three food memories connect to family and heritage – and are guaranteed to make your mouth water (hello, mango and rice). Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation is Thanh's chosen social impact organisation, helping children understand where food comes from and develop a lifelong appreciation for seasonal, fresh and delicious food.

"Why are we so disconnected from food now and why don't we care?" This is the question Thanh Truong, a self-described 'Fruit Nerd', is attempting to answer through his passion for cooking. He is exceptionally passionate about fruits and vegetables, and the benefits these contribute to a healthy diet. After all, good food starts with good produce. Thanh is eager to educate Australians on where their food comes from and the behind-the-scenes knowledge of the subtle differences on every piece of produce. Thanh and his friend, Duncan, were Runners-up on the Channel 7 cooking game show Plate of Origin. Representing Vietnam, he successfully brought Vietnamese cuisine to the spotlight and shined the light on the dishes he grew up with. Moving on from Plate of Origin, he is now pursuing a Masters in Food Systems & Gastronomy to further educate himself on the incredible benefits and possibilities of blending fruits and vegetables. He sat down for a chat with DAWNCast founder, Dai Le, to discuss Plate of Origin, the hidden truth of fruit and vegetables, and his plans for the future.
