The idea that technology may be able to directly capture and control our thoughts is both fascinating and scary. But this type of technology has been around and is continues to be developed for a variety of applications. In this episode, we speak to Dr. Susan Boehnke about brain computer interfaces and neuromarketing. We dive into the ethical implications of brain-computer interface (BCI) applications—are these technologies enhancing human potential or invading our privacy? We also unpack how the media's portrayal of BCIs often exaggerates their capabilities, contrasting it with their real-world use. Plus, we explore neuromarketing: the fascinating history of how companies use brain data to influence your choices and shape marketing strategies. Don't miss this eye-opening conversation! Susan Boehnke completed a PhD in Neuroscience (2002) at Dalhousie University as a Killam Scholar using psychophysical and neurophysiological approaches to examine spatial processing in the auditory system. She then completed a postdoctoral fellowship in primate visual and oculomotor neurophysiology with Prof. Doug Munoz at Queen's Univ. In collaboration with Profs. Munoz and De Felice (Brazil), she took a lead role in the creation and validation of one of the first non-human primate (NHP) models of Alzheimer's disease using behavioural, neurophysiological, neuroimaging, and molecular approaches. She led development of the first NHP biobank in Canada, and the establishment of normative values of fluid biomarkers of neurodegeneration in macaques. During COVID, her team used the NHP facility at Queen's to explore the effect of social enrichment and isolation on the brain. In response to recent explosion of interest in neurotechnology, such as brain computer interfaces, she has now turned her attention to creating a micro-credential program in neurotechnology (https://neurotechmicrocreds.com/) and exploring ethical issues related to neurotech. She is also the lead of the Training Committee for Connected Minds: Neural and Machine Systems for a Healthy, Just Society, a large Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) program between York and Queen's Universities. This episode is sponsored by the Connected Minds program. Connected Minds, funded by the Canadian First Research Excellence Fund, is a 7-year collaborative program between York University and Queen's University that focuses on interdisciplinary, ethical, and socially responsible research and technology development. The discussion includes a fascinating lens on how evolutionary biology and neuroscience can influence consumer buying decisions and help companies thrive in an increasingly complex world. We discuss the ever-evolving landscape of identity, stereotypes and the challenge of globalisation. The conversation sheds light on the psychological dynamics of belonging and how digitalisation is challenging the long-standing norms, offering both obstacles and opportunities for brands to connect and prosper. We talk about the human obsession with logic and whether this is holding us back! And we delve into the tension between group conformity and cultural exploration, revealing how brands can harness these instincts to foster genuine connections and societal growth. Philippe shares valuable insights into emotional branding strategies, particularly in the volatile post-COVID era, where brands are tasked with providing not just products but also identity, belonging, purpose and comfort to their consumers. We also talk about how B2B and B2C buying behaviour is more closely aligned than ever before, and why the power of storytelling and emotional connection is so important in B2B too! Philippe emphasises the significance of building trust and authenticity, especially in times of crisis and uncertainty, and how your business can do so. Philippe explains how by better understanding the emotional drivers of their audiences, companies can navigate challenges more effectively, turning obstacles into opportunities for growth and trust-building. The episode concludes with a compelling exploration of generational shifts in marketing, highlighting the unique worldview of Gen-Z and the importance of empathy and emotional resonance in crafting successful branding strategies.Contact Philippe Assouline: info@propelloriq.comWebsite: propelloriq.comListen on:Apple PodcastGoogle PodcastSpotifyWhat is FuturePrint? Dive into Corin Bell's inspiring journey! In this episode, we explore her path from studying Politics and Philosophy in Stockport to tackling food sustainability through her innovative catering business. Corin shares insights on food waste, community impact, and her mission for fairness in food systems. Tune in to discover how she's driving change for a more sustainable future! Corin Bell's Background Corin grew up in Stockport before moving to Manchester for university, where she studied Politics and Philosophy. This academic path was driven by her interest in understanding how systems work. As the first in her family to attend university, she felt nervous but ultimately valued the freedom and opportunities her experience provided, despite studying a subject she considered vocationally useless. Career Journey After university, Corin worked in the public sector, primarily with Manchester City Council, focusing on homelessness and environmental projects. However, she left her job following significant budget cuts after the 2010 election, which greatly affected local authority funding. Exploration of Food Systems Corin's transition into food-related projects stemmed from personal interest rather than a specific career plan. Her work has involved addressing food poverty and sustainability, ultimately leading her to explore the interconnectedness of food systems. Real Junk Food Project Inspired by the Real Junk Food Project in Leeds, Corin and friends launched a similar initiative in Manchester in 2015, aiming to utilise surplus food. They began with pop-up supper clubs offering meals on a pay-as-you-feel basis, though they soon encountered challenges. Challenges with the Pay-as-You-Feel Model Corin highlighted the complexities of the pay-as-you-feel model, including inconsistent income and sustainability issues. To stabilise finances, the decision was made to shift to a catering business with set prices while still supporting community initiatives. Current Work Today, Corin runs a catering business that prioritises reducing food waste and using locally sourced, sustainably produced ingredients. This venture supports community initiatives by providing meals and grocery parcels to those in need, including refugees and low-income families. The catering business, including a café and bar at the People's History Museum, aims to balance commercial activities with community support, demonstrating viable solutions to food system problems while ensuring stable employment for staff. Food Waste Issues Corin emphasised that food waste often occurs not due to spoilage but because it's economically unfeasible to keep surplus food. Businesses may find it cheaper to dispose of excess than to sell it, especially when the food is still edible. Additionally, significant waste happens pre-farm gate, as many farmers opt not to harvest produce that won't sell, contributing to nutritional waste. Retailers often prefer produce with longer shelf lives, leading to the discarding of fresh items that are perfectly ripe but can't be guaranteed to sell. Corin also noted that best before dates are often arbitrary, citing examples like Himalayan sea salt, which can last indefinitely. Community-Centric Business Corin believes in the importance of local businesses over scaling for growth, as local enterprises keep wealth within the community and promote sustainability. She advocates for replicating successful models instead of aggressive expansion to maintain community ties and reduce waste while fostering local entrepreneurship. Consumer Behaviour and Happiness The discussion highlighted the modern consumer culture's focus on constant consumption, which can lead to dissatisfaction. Corin emphasised the need for individuals to find ways to contribute to society meaningfully, especially as younger generations often feel disconnected. She pointed out that true happiness and fulfilment come from personal satisfaction rather than the relentless pursuit of growth or profit. Philosophy and Values Corin underscores the significance of having a philosophical foundation and strong values. Without this grounding, individuals risk becoming mindless consumers, lacking depth and perspective. She calls for systemic change, emphasising that current systems are not designed to support individual happiness and collective well-being. Social Media and Communication Corin discussed the challenges of communication in a visually dominated world, expressing a preference for deeper discussions over memes and quick visuals. Sustainable Living and Political Reform Passionate about sustainable food practices, Corin believes in the need for a fair society and the necessity of shifting agricultural policies towards sustainability, such as reducing red meat consumption. She critiques the government's inability to enact these changes due to political unpopularity, advocating for proportional representation and values-based governance. Balance of Love and Hard Work Corin recognises that success comes from a blend of love and hard work. She acknowledges that unexpected opportunities can alter one's career path. Resources for Learning To promote sustainable living, Corin recommends resources like ethicalconsumer.org for consumers interested in making informed choices. She also suggests staying updated through organisations like Sustain, which advocate for sustainable food systems and policies. Definition of Inspiration For Corin, inspiration is about "lighting a fire," creating energy and motivation within oneself. Looking to the future, she aspires to foster fairness and accountability in the world, advocating for corporate responsibility and empowerment for those who have faced adversity.  Resources:

At Home with the Poor: Consumer Behaviour and Material Culture in England, c.1650-1850 (Manchester UP, 2024) by Dr. Joseph Harley opens the doors to the homes of the forgotten poor and traces the goods they owned before, during and after the industrial revolution (c. 1650-1850). Using a vast and diverse range of sources, it gets to the very heart of what it meant to be 'poor' by examining the homes of the impoverished and mapping how numerous household goods became more widespread. As the book argues, poverty did not necessarily equate to owning very little and living in squalor. In fact, its novel findings show that most of the poor strove to improve their domestic spheres and that their demand for goods was so great that it was a driving force of the industrial revolution. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. The Consumer Behaviour Book: Exploring The Reasons Why Emotions Are So Important In Decision Making by Anthony “Tas” Tasgal  ABOUT THE BOOK: Neoclassical economics assumes that most people have well-defined preferences and make well-informed, self-interested decisions based on those preferences.  But in the real world, this is often not the case.  The Consumer Behaviour Book combines elements of economics and psychology to help you understand how and why consumers behave the way they do. Using behavioral economics as the foundation, the author explains the anomalies in consumer choices and what influences human behavior, preferences, and decision-making.   Often the case, emotional as well as economic factors play a vital role in consumer behavior.  Therefore, behavioral economics can be an important aid to business and marketing strategies by understanding how consumer decisions can be influenced. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Anthony “Tas” Tasgal is a man of many lanyards: trainer, author, TEDx speaker, brand and communications strategist, and lecturer.  His area of expertise includes storytelling, insights, and behavioral economics.  He is a Course Director for several organizations including the Chartered Institute of Marketing, the Market Research Society, and the Institute of Internal Communication, and he runs The Guardian masterclass on “Harnessing The Power Of Storytelling.”  He is the author of several books including the award-winning The Storytelling Book: Finding the Golden Thread in Your Communications, and The Insight Book: Enhancing Your Creativity By Learning To See Things Differently which was featured on episode 448 of The Marketing Book Podcast in 2023. Rotman Executive Summary
Mind the gap: Should brands weigh in on divisive topics?

Rotman Executive Summary

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 9, 2024 15:28

From issues of bodily autonomy to climate change to social equality, the world is increasingly polarized, and even companies can't escape hot-button topics. While once, organizations could keep their positions on divisive issues to themselves, consumers are demanding they take sides. But should they? And how can brands weigh in without alienating the people who disagree with their stance? Assistant professor Rhia Catapano explores how businesses can navigate these polarizing topics on the latest episode of the Executive Summary. Show notes:[0:00] In 2022, Disney and the state of Florida became embroiled in a polarizing debate over the state's alleged "Don't Say Gay" bill, which Disney opposed, albeit belatedly. [0:56] Once, businesses could stay silent when hot topics arose, but today consumers are demanding they take sides. [1:32] Meet Rhia Catapano, an assistant professor at the Rotman School of management who studies consumer persuasion. [2:20] Brands most often worry about consumer boycotts when they take stances their audiences disagree with. But that worry might be misplaced. [2:49] Consumers tend to buy from companies when it's inconvenient to maintain their boycott. [3:14] We're also likely to change our memories, thinking we boycotted a product, even when we still loaded it into our carts. [6:10] And we often believe signaling our intentions to boycott is "enough," so we feel less guilty even as we're purchasing items from a brand we've said we'll avoid. [7:36] So if we're so bad at boycotting, why should businesses care? For one, the reputational hit is very real. [7:51] There are always cases where brands don't have to worry - particularly when the audience boycotting the brand isn't it's target audience. See Nike, Colin Kaepernick and the social right in the U.S. [8:31] But when the audiences align, boycotts are particularly effective in this age of social media. First, because social media makes it easier to propagate messages. [9:23] Second, social media creates a "safe space" to share polarizing opinions. [10:10] So how can companies navigate hot button issues? First, make sure you're not being a hypocrite. [10:49] Consider how you frame your stance around an issue, and what you want to achieve by making public statements. [13:08] Be real about whether you can take the heat. [13:58] And consider new audience opportunities when your values don't align with your existing customer base. "It makes the most sense for the company to stick to what are their core values and what can they do that will align with what they've done in the past and what they want to do moving forward, rather than trying to please everyone.

In today's world, where consumption and choice are driving forces, understanding consumer behavior is crucial for businesses looking to succeed. It is a complex discipline that examines the intricate network of decisions and actions taken by individuals and entities. These decisions span from the realization of a need or desire to the acquisition, utilization, and ultimately, the disposal of goods and services. This exploration of consumer actions goes beyond the act of purchase; it delves into the underlying psychological, social, cultural, and economic factors that influence buying patterns and brand loyalty.Comprehending consumer behavior not only predicts sales; it also deciphers the symbolic meanings that products hold for consumers and how these meanings are created, shared, and contested in society. By analyzing how individuals and organizations navigate the marketplace and the multitude of options it provides, businesses can develop more effective marketing strategies, enhance customer satisfaction, and ultimately, improve their economic viability in a competitive environment.Whether it is a simple everyday item or a complex service, understanding the consumer's journey from need recognition to post-purchase feelings provides marketers with valuable insights to connect with their audience on a deeper level, establish long-lasting relationships, and anticipate the future needs of the market. This intricate study is not just about financial gain but an ongoing dialogue with the heartbeat of society, an effort to resonate with the ever-changing narrative of human needs and desires.
