In this episode, we share the mic with one of the most accomplished American triathletes in history. Tim DeBoom, USAT and Ironman Hall of Famer, is the last American to win an Ironman World Championship title, his back-to-back wins in 2001 and 2002 took us all to new heights of what may be possible. An athlete his entire life, Tim's professional career spanned from 1995 through 2012, from the age of 24 to his final season of racing at the age of 40. f you are a regular listener, then you know Tim's wife Nicole, and if you follow Nicole, perhaps you received her newsletter in late January entitled "So there's this guy…" Well, we did and were so excited to hear, as Nicole wrote, that Tim was emerging from his cocoon and putting himself out there into the world. As we read on, we learned that Tim is pulling back the curtain and sharing what helped him become the best in the world. From his two Ironman Triathlon World Championships to a happy, extremely fit 50-year old, Tim shares his tried and true tenets of what he calls A Dedicated Life. We hope you enjoy the show! In this episode, we discuss: - a dedicated life - compassion, moderation, humility - seeing Kona through the eyes of his daughter Wilder - shooting all his competitive bullets - sound body, sound mind - mano a mano exhibition race  - be-nighted - strength every day - seeing the perfect moments - eliminate things in life that cause overthinking - evolution of nutrition - training the gut   - power of oolong tea We recognize our Patreon community for their support. Mike Reilly has called over 350,000 athletes across the finish lines of over 180 IRONMAN races around the world for the last 30 years. People spend months and even years dreaming about the day that they will cross the line of their dream race and hear these four words, "You are an IRONMAN!" Mike has literally become a symbol of accomplishment for so many people. He is the finish line voice that puts the final stamp on a journey that changes lives. Mike does not take this lightly. He understands the responsibility of his role in this transformational moment. Mike started his professional life in a classroom, but was quickly lured to southern California to work in the running industry with his brother. He got into the sport of triathlon and fell in love with the lifestyle. And he still loves it today - deeply and passionately. Mike became an announcer by accident and we're lucky he did. He's one of the best people on the planet and if you ever have the chance to be called across a finish line by him, all I can say is soak it in. Our conversation is fun, deep, insightful and inspiring. Plus there is an appearance by the elusive Tim DeBoom! Once they come back, time seems to accelerate. I get up to the hot corner to take pictures of the pros coming riding into T2 and then running up Palani and down the Kuikini Hwy. The female pros roll in within 20-30 minutes of the first males. Shortly after the first females head into T2 the lead males are coming back from Ali'I Dr and out onto the Queen K. By the time the female pros are down Ali'I, the men are heading into the energy lab. By the time the women are coming back from Ali'I, the men are coming out of the energy lab. By that time, if you want a good spot on the media platform, you better get over there. It doesn't take long before you hear and see the helicopter following Jan Frodeno. I wanted to interview Heather Jackson and did not catch her there, but I did get off a question at the pro conference. What we are going to do now is take you to a series of 3 finish line interviews and then go right into the men's pro conference and the women's conference. When we come back, we'll talk about the rest of the evening. The rest of the afternoon was spent tracking our Colorado age-group athletes and celebrating with them at the finish line and getting there pictures. We did the final post of the evening around 1am. The next day we split up. I went to scout out University of Hawaii Hilo for my daughter while Bill and Khem went to the Coeur Sports brunch and then worked processing pictures and what not until we left for dinner and the airport. Our return home was eventful. On Sunday evening we had a mechanical issue at the end of the runway and had to go back to the gate. By 10, they kicked everyone off the plane and announced that they were going to get the part we need from Oahu. The part arrived around 1am, but did not work. At 2:30 they cancelled the flight and then we got in a line to get reticketed and pick up our vouchers and luggage. We got a rental car and drove to the Fairmount, which turned out to be awesome. Post race season blues are pretty common. As athletes complete their A race goals, they often have feelings of post race blues. They have been working toward their goal for months. The athlete has structured their world, organized their time, dedicated themselves to preparation, and now it's over. Here are the comments that I hear: "A little let down that I don't have a goal any more" "Empty that I don't have a date to work toward" "Feel a little anxious" "Fear that without a goal it won't be as easy to make healthy choices"     "What's New in the 303": USAT is hosting the Colorado Combine. Born and raised in the Chicago suburbs, Nicole DeBoom was a standout swimmer, qualifying for the 1988 Olympic Trials and later graduating from Yale University. She decided to pursue the sport of triathlon, and a lucky seat assignment introduced her to her future husband, Tim DeBoom (who would later become a 2-time Hawaii Ironman World Champion), on a flight to the 1995 Triathlon World Championships. Nicole started racing professionally in 1999, racking up countless podium finishes. During the final stage of her racing career in 2004, Nicole created and introduced something that had never been done before – the very first running skirt. Shortly afterward, Nicole went on to launch Skirt Sports with the mission of helping women find inspiration, confidence, and courage through the transformative power of running and fitness. Today, Skirt Sports is a national women’s apparel brand offering a full line of products that fit real women’s bodies and support their busy running lives. Currently, you can find Nicole chatting with customers at the Skirt Sports Boulder flagship store, helping women change their lives through her non-profit organization Running Start, interviewing visionaries for her popular podcast Run This World and chasing around her 7-year-old girl, Wilder. Nicole’s energy is as big and dynamic as her racing career.  I think you’re going to love this conversation as much as I did! Happy New Year! It's 2017. Time to look forward, make plans and move your life in the direction you want it to go. I looked for some 2017 inspiration and found it in the form of my husband, Tim DeBoom, who retired from professional racing after 20 years and 2 Hawaii Ironman titles. He's in a different place now and it was fitting to interview him for this one as we just passed our 20 year anniversary too.

See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Dr. Phil Maffetone: Avoiding The Ills Of Modern Society

The B.rad Podcast

Dr. Phil Maffetone is a legend in the world of endurance training, for he has been advocating for a healthy approach to peak athletic performance for decades, and finally getting his due for presenting the most sensible and effective way to train for extreme endurance goals. Dr. Phil has worked with some of the greatest endurance athletes in history, including triathlon legend Mark Allen, Mike Pigg, and Tim DeBoom. He was the first guy to call out the incessant use of sugary gels and drinks as lame and unhealthy, and advocate for the use of more nutritious fats to support fat burning during workouts. Phil’s other genius breakthrough was to tell athletes to slow down and observe their maximum aerobic heart rate during sustained cardiovascular workouts, for this would help improve fat burning efficiency and reduce the stress of the workout. Today, the “MAF heart rate” is endurance training gospel—  MAF being “maximum aerobic function,” but also an ode to Dr. Phil’s last name. Dr. Phil is a free-thinking individual who strives to second guess lame conventional wisdom while advocating for personal experimentation and intuition over the prevailing cookie cutter approaches to both fitness goals and traditional medical care. In this show, we get going on an assortment of topics relating to our constant exposure to manipulative marketing forces and sensationalist mainstream media. Consequently, Phil strives to exist in a bubble where you don’t consume mainstream media, barely knows what day it is, and is happier because of it.  You gotta dig this guy’s approach, and I for one try hard to emulate it. In fact, our first Skype podcast appointment came and went, not because I forgot about my long-awaited conversation with Phil, but because I forgot what day it was and played morning Speedgolf, instead of connecting with him early at his new home base of Florida. Dr. Phil explains that the reason we are exposed to manipulative marketing practices is because advertisers know it works! We make decisions with our reptilian brain based on instant gratification, or we make decisions based on analytical processing — quite often over-analyzing or allowing the primitive brain to hijack the process. We are most receptive to considering new input or transformation when we have experienced pain and suffering. Notice how many people come to primal/paleo/low-carb/keto from disease conditions that couldn’t be righted with a traditional approach. Ideally, Dr. Phil argues, we would honor our instincts and intuition, and inform our decisions with personal experimentation, instead of succumbing to the cookie cutter approach that is the norm in both fitness and traditional medical care. Dr. Phil is always good for some juicy sound bites, as he acknowledges that it’s essential to fight the daily battle against manipulative marketing and BS artists. A few tidbits: Physicians are no longer experts on diet, but they often believe that they are. Phil talks about the global “overfat” epidemic. Unlike visible obesity, being overfat is represented by an excessive waistline measurement. Strive for a waistline less than half of your height in inches. This will help you avoid the prevailing disease triad of chronic inflammation, carbohydrate intolerance, and insulin resistance. First step to health: Ditch refined carbohydrates (sugars, flour/bread products, sweetened beverages) for two weeks per the Maffetone “2-week test.” Then you can reintroduce natural carbohydrates back in (fruit, sweet potatoes, etc.) and see what you can tolerate without adverse symptoms. For many people with insulin resistance and decades of junk food consumption, keto might be warranted. And what’s with all this disparaging of red meat? FYI, chicken is the worst meat because it’s high in the inflammation-promoting arachidonic acid. And yet, people are still so fixated on the importance of eating “lean meat” like chicken. Thankfully Dr. Phil is here with the hard facts and a desire to expose the truth. Enjoy listening to this radically informative and eye-opening conversation with Dr. Phil, and check out his great articles and products at PhilMaffetone.com ( http://philmaffetone.com/ ). *TIMESTAMPS:* Dr. Maffetone talks about separating fact from opinion when one listens to interviews or reads about fitness.  [08:04] The experience of working with thousands of patients can bring information that might not be in a book. [12:08] One way our brains work is people are looking for instant gratification. [13:24] The analytical way the brain works brings you to a conclusion after much thinking. [17:15] One of the big problems we have in our society is people being overfed. [20:33] How do we get people to listen!! [23:17] There is a lack of consensus on things like diet and exercise and this causes people to be confused and not know who to listen to. [27:13] It’s all about money. [29:19] Much confused information about meats. [31:09] Many of the professionals we go to for advice are no longer experts and are influenced by the same articles and advertisers. [39:01] Dr. Phil is disengaged from media for a specific purpose: STRESS! [45:07] The answer to “What should I do?” is very personal. [49:36] Why are we all waiting around to go to a specialist when we could be more proactive? [50:51] What does he mean by “overfat”? [53:12] You can be normal weight and non-obese and still have excess body fat. [56:22] If we're concerned and we want to make some quick a redirection, turn things around, what would be the triad of things to do with our diet or our daily activity, physical exercise. How would you attack that? [01:02:35] When you eliminate the bad foods, our brains work better.
