Annie, Ella & André review the Washington Spirit's 1-0 win over their certified rivals, Orlando Pride. We relive everything from the weekend, starting with how down we all were when the availability report came out (and our thoughts on the hefty slew of injuries). Then, we dive into the game. From Gift Monday's first start to Tara McKeown playing LCB and Esme Morgan at fullback, we get into all the tweaks, and why. After, we discuss the multiple ways Jona Giráldez kept his team shifting, and André can't shutup about the 27-second press that led to Gift Monday's gift that gave the Spirit the lead, and eventually all three points. Also, we chat about what this rivalry means to the teams and the NWSL, which desperately needs organic rivalries.Thank you for listening, please subscribe, rate, and review. It means a lot to us!

Full details on the timing, how to watch and more in our pre-event explainer.   What I want to do here is take a look ahead, and outline some of the potential factors which could change the direction of the race on Saturday, for both the Pro Men and Pro Women.   Coming so early in the typical racing year, it is very unusual to have such a depth of field in early May. Many of the favourites – Ryf, Charles-Barclay, Blummenfelt, Ditlev, Brownlee, Frodeno as examples – have not yet raced at all. Some – Haug, West, Sodaro, Jewett – arrive with confidence, while others have perhaps not hit the heights they wanted in their limited races this year.   That all suggests strongly that this one is unlikely to go simply to form and rankings. Despite the best experience and preparations, expect at least some of the top names to talk post-race that their race sharpness was missing.   How big will Lucy's swim lead be? As is now familiar, Great Britain's Lucy Charles-Barclay will almost certainly be the first athlete to complete the 2km swim at Figueretas Beach. In the absence of Taylor Knibb – who managed to stay with the Brit in Dallas last year – she's probably going to be solo through most of the two laps on Saturday.   Lotte Wilms (70.3 World Champs) and Sara Perez Sala (Challenge Miami) have shown the potential to perhaps come closest in the water, but the gap to some of the big-name favourites (Ashleigh Gentle, Daniela Ryf, Paula Finlay and co) will be the one of the first points of interest.   Of note, is that LCB has spent four weeks training consistently at altitude in Font-Romeu, France to prepare for this race. Her altitude block immediately prior to the 2021 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship helped deliver one of the greatest middle-distance performances ever. If Saturday starts with a gap of significantly more than a minute over those with genuine winning potential, then it'll be advantage Lucy less than 30 minutes into the racing.   Lucy Charles-Barclay / IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship 2021 Photo by Patrick McDermott/Getty Images for IRONMAN Where's Kristian and Magnus? For the men's swim, the chances of a lone athlete breaking clear are remote zero. You would expect the likes of Aaron Royle, Alistair Brownlee, Jan Frodeno, Daniel Baekkegard, Ben Kanute and Kyle Smith to be among those within 10/15 seconds entering T1. Will the in-form Jason West make that cut here?   Key questions will be: How close will IRONMAN 70.3 World Champion, Krsitian Blummenfelt be? And what deficit will Denmark's Magnus Ditlev have to make up? The Dane won't be at the front, but is a better swimmer than I think many give him credit for. If he enters T1 within say a minute or so of the leaders, he's right where he needs to be. Significantly less, and he'll be smiling as he starts dropping the watt bombs on the bike!   Group dynamics Once we are onto the bikes – and with memories of 2022 still vivid – how groups on the bike are monitored and policed will, I think, be key to how the race plays out. Nobody wants to see drafting penalties issued – but equally, we want to see racing within the rules too.   That's as much to do with the athletes, as it is the Technical Officials.   Looking at the bike course, it's basically a straight line, out-and-back course, which starts with a steady incline of just over 5km. The latter, perhaps, may help thin the field out early, while the nature of the route should help make maintaining a legal distance easy (and easier to spot).   We'll see how this plays out – and hopefully we won't even need to reference it post-race.   Breakaway? Who'll make – or be able to make – a move on the bike? I don't think that's going to come via bike handling skills – this is not Nice, France for example – but if we take the men first, who'll be able to get away? The lack of Sam Laidlow means one less ‘go from the gun' athlete with proven bike ability, but it feels unlikely that Brownlee, Kanute, Frodeno and co. will be playing it safe, with the likes of Blummenfelt and Ditlev probably not far behind.   Kristian is confident he can win on the run if needed. That remains to be proven, but nobody is going to be waiting around to make it any easier for him. I think that points to any lead group from the swim being whittled down via sustained pressure, but if I had to make a prediction, I think we'll see a small and very select group entering T2 separated by 10-15 seconds.   In typical fashion, I expect Lucy Charles-Barclay to lead for at least a significant proportion of this race, solo. If she's on St George 2021 form, that could be all the way to the finish line. As one of the few top female athletes not to have raced this year, she's been relatively quiet in media headline terms – but her competition will surely not have forgotten her abilities.   With some of the greatest runners we've ever seen in action here – Anne Haug, Chelsea Sodaro, Tamara Jewett and Emma Pallant-Browne – that all points to Daniela Ryf and Paula Findlay in particular leading the charge to join LCB up front. Without Taylor Knibb as a potential partner at the front, if LCB finds Ryf and Findlay riding well and bridging up without those ‘runners', I think she'll be more than content with that company.   Who's got the run legs? We've talked at length in the lead-up to this race about the strength-in-depth of the fields. We know we have some of the best runners in the history of the sport racing, but who can produce it against this level of competition, especially when the swim and bike will surely be raced in aggressive fashion in both the men's and women's fields? I don't foresee anyone starting their 18km feeling fresh – remember what happened to Blummenfelt, Laidlow and Brownlee at the Canadian Open?!   Most peoples' wildcard for the men's race is Jason West, for example. A well-earned position, courtesy of his form this year at CLASH Miami and 70.3 Oceanside, each producing headline-grabbing run splits. Will he be in a position at T2 to put that to potentially race-winning use? Frodeno and Brownlee are two of the most decorated athletes of all time, but what have they got left in their running legs?   Similar situation for the women. Tamara Jewett's run prowess is not new, but Oceanside was the first time that had resulted in a win against some of the biggest names in the sport. This is another step up. Anne Haug has used her run speed to podium in almost every non-drafting race she starts – is Tamara there, just yet?   https://www.tri247.com/triathlon-news/elite/pto-tour-european-open-start-list-bib-numbers-pro-men https://www.tri247.com/triathlon-news/elite/pto-tour-european-open-start-list-bib-numbers-pro-women   Taylor Knibb on stress fracture rehab By Jonathan Turner News Director 20 Apr 2023 American star Taylor Knibb is back firing on all cylinders after an extended injury layoff.   She launched her YouTube channel this week (video embedded below) with a detailed rundown of the healing process – and frighteningly for her rivals she appears to have produced that astonishing performance to win the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship last October in spite of her foot issues.   Talking through the timeline and the details of the injury which has kept her on the sidelines since November's WTCS finale in Abu Dhabi, she explained how the problem first emerged: “I was prepping for WTCS Leeds [which took place in early June] and I felt something in my foot and was diagnosed with a stress reaction.   “I was told two to six weeks and you'll be back, it's really minor. One surgeon even said I wouldn't have even stopped you from running with that minor an edema.   “But it wasn't healing and finally at 11 weeks I saw a doctor and he said you can start running now because if it's not healed, it's not going to heal.   “So I started racing in the fall – I raced Dallas, Cagliari and then the 70.3 Worlds, Bermuda and Abu Dhabi.   And that quintet of races saw some superb performances – she picked up a second, third and fourth in the WTCS events, led for much of the PTO US Open in Dallas before being overhauled by Ashleigh Gentle and then produced that masterclass in St George where she left the world's best trailing in her wake.   But taking up the story after that busy spell of racing, Knibb revealed: “Then I took a little break and it turns out that my foot was not healed. So I got an MRI and it was now a stress fracture, with a CT scan showing a fracture line.   “So then my options were I could rest it fully and hope it would heal and that I think would be eight weeks of nothing in a boot – no weight bearing, no training whatsoever.   “Or I could get surgery and I opted for that and got a screw put in my fifth metatarsal on January 3rd.” From that point onwards it's all been about the recovery process, something that the 25-year-old freely admits has been “very challenging”.   She explained: “Because the incision point is directly to the bone I had to be very careful and wait until it had healed before starting swimming again or doing anything.   “I did get to do strength training with Erin [Carson] which helped my sanity a lot – I wanted to go in the day after surgery, I think she said no to that but it was maybe two days after I was back working with her.   “It was four weeks before I was cleared to do some easy swimming and biking and built it up gradually.   “But I'm back fully swimming and biking and adding the running in now.”   She goes into detail on the video about how even getting back outside has been a big boost and what she might do differently in the future, saying: “It was tough but I think that I have learned a lot from it and I think if I were to do it again I would focus on what you need to do [rather than what you can't].   “It was very challenging and I'm very grateful for the people around me because I know I was not fun to be around some days. But it's a period of time that's hopefully closed now.”   The defence of her 70.3 Worlds title in Finland in late August is the big priority for 2023 and we look forward to seeing her back on the start line soon – and hopefully producing more YouTube videos too!     What's New in the 303: Bicycle Colorado Event Support April 28 at 12:30 PM  · The Lookout Mountain Hill Climb is in danger of cancellation due to low pre-registration numbers. The property was acquired in 2008, construction began in 2011, and the track opened in 2013.   In 2013, a week away from opening, 70m of the track was destroyed by a tornado. Then, after a month's worth of repairs, lightning struck in the same spot. That was the month of the disastrous Boulder flood.   Over its 5 years of operation, the velodrome hosted numerous national and international cycling events and was a popular destination for anyone from Olympians to amateur cyclists and families – really anyone with the need for speed.   The facility was put up for sale in 2019 and has since fallen into disrepair. In 2020, a group of dedicated cycling enthusiasts launched a campaign to resurrect the velodrome and restore it to its former glory. Their efforts have included fundraising through GoFundMe, seeking sponsorships, and recruiting volunteers to help with the restoration work.   The goal of the campaign is to create a world-class cycling destination that will attract riders from all over the world and help to promote the sport of cycling. With the support of the community, the Boulder Valley Velodrome is poised to once again become a vibrant center of cycling culture and competition.   The Boulder Valley Velodrome's story is, and will always be, a story of passion, perseverance, and community.   Out of the 26 velodromes in the country, the Boulder Valley Velodrome is one of just two tracks that meet Olympic standards.   For press inquiries, please contact info@bouldervalleyvelodrome.org.   Boulder 70.3 - Don't Delay! *** Please note the special day for this event -- the call falls on Sunday, instead of our usual Saturday time.  When Zachary Shore was a sophomore at the University of Pennsylvania, he called his parents to tell them he was dropping out. Legally blind by age 16, his vision had continued to deteriorate, and he found himself socially isolated, fearful, and debilitated by eye strain. After an encounter on campus with a fellow blind student who had just returned from a solo excursion with seeming ease, Zach had a moment of awakening: “My problem wasn’t my blindness. It was my lack of skills and confidence.” He would indeed come to find a remarkable set of skills and confidence — eventually earning a doctorate from Oxford University, becoming a distinguished scholar of international conflict and an author of six books, and traveling to more than 30 countries, many of them as solo journeys. Zach credits his strong sense of self to the nurturance of his parents. But his ability to move freely about the world came through a rigorous and demanding training program at the Louisiana Center for the Blind (LCB) — where he made his way after his moment of awakening in college — whose requirements for graduation would challenge even the best of sighted students. Shop, prepare, and cook a meal for 40 people, all by yourself, and don’t forget the entire cleanup. Accomplish a “drop route”; that is, find your way back to the LCB after being dropped in an unfamiliar location, without asking anyone, using only environmental clues like the direction of the sun. And take a solo trip to a city you’ve never visited before, with an assigned checklist of to-dos. Armed with solid skills and having confronted many of his fears, Zach returned to finish his studies at U. Penn. He went on to receive a master's in history, a doctorate in modern European history, a postdoctoral research fellowship at Harvard, and a Fulbright Award, among other distinctions. His books, which have hard-hitting names like What Hitler Knew, A Sense of the Enemy, and Breeding Bin Ladens, examine themes like morality in war and “strategic empathy,” focusing on understanding the enemy. As a professor at the Naval Postgraduate School in Northern California, he is “doing his best to give back to the community by helping military leaders and others think more deeply about the choices they make and the causes of war.” Zach’s hard-hitting academic interests belie his gentle and modest demeanor. He has been described as “a historian of great humanity and insight” with analyses that are “penetrating yet sensitive.” He often shares stories of his personal failures and lessons learned, that “it is okay to fail as long as I try again.” Most recently, he has “tried again” and brought forth another book, This is Not Who We Are: America's Struggle Between Vengeance and Virtue. According to the esteemed historian Adam Hochschild, Zach “spotlights the moral quandaries that plagued Americans as their wartime thirst for vengeance wrestled with their loftier ideals.” As to whether his blindness sparked his broader interest in human judgment, Zach reflects, “I don’t think so… but being unable to read body language or facial expressions has certainly led me to think about how we read other people. I’m also obsessed with the general question of why people shoot themselves in the foot.” For more than three decades, he has been an advocate of improving opportunities for the blind. He has also written on why smart people make bad decisions and how to succeed in graduate school. Through his company UpWords, he serves as a writing coach for authors, professionals, and students. Please join Adam Hochschild and Rahul Brown in conversation with this insightful historian and courageous citizen of the world.

Leveraging cross-correlations and linear covariance-based filtering for line-intensity map reconstructions at linear scales by Dongwoo T Chung. on Sunday 18 September We explore the possible application of linear covariance-based (LCB) filtering to line-intensity mapping (LIM) signal reconstructions. Originally introduced for reconstruction of the integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect in the cosmic microwave background, the LCB filter is an optimal map estimator that extends the simple Wiener filter by leveraging external correlated data. Given a detectable strong LIM-galaxy or LIM-LIM cross power spectrum, we show recovery of high-redshift, large-scale line-intensity fluctuations -- even in the presence of bright interloper emission -- in simulations of a futuristic [C II] LIM survey as well as simulated future iterations of the CO Mapping Array Project (COMAP). With sufficient galaxy abundances or low LIM survey noise, normalised cross-correlation between the LCB reconstruction and the true signal reaches 70-90% on large, linear comoving scales corresponding to $ksim0.1$ Mpc$^{-1}$. This suggests the possible use of such signal reconstructions in astrophysical or cosmological contexts that require identifying the locations of line emissivity peaks and voids, although clear shortcomings exist on smaller scales. The successful application of the LCB filter in simulated LIM contexts highlights the importance of cross-correlations to studies of the reionising and reionised high-redshift universe with LIM and other large-scale structure surveys. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.07500v1

Does God See Me?Heavy credit: See below for bibliography“In Genesis, God sees, hears, knows and understands.” -JWBottom Line: When I take matters in my own hands and make a mess of things, God hears my cry, sees my misery and meets me there with revealing hope.Discussion questions for group and personal study:We encourage you to use our sermons and discussion questions to gather with some friends and talk about the passage together. Pray and ask God to guide you. He is faithful. Questions? The goal is to encourage people to engage the scriptures together.CHAPTER 16 Questions, CSB Life Connections Bible (LCB):OPEN: Growing up, who was the main decision maker in your family?CONSIDER (vv. 1-2): What do you find most surprising about Sarai's words? What do you think drove Sarai to this course of action? CONSIDER (vv. 3-6): In your opinion, who is to blame for this situation? What problems are evident in Abram's family? What could have been done to resolve this conflict?CONSIDER (vv. 7-16): Where did Hagar find comfort or confidence in the angel's words? APPLY: What have you been praying about for a long time? Where can you find encouragement and support to stay on the right path until your prayers are answered?FOR GROUPS (vv. 13-14): Pass a mirror around the group as an object lesson. Encourage group members to hold the mirror and contemplate the God Who Sees.Opening:Bottom Line: God hears my cries and sees my misery. Working Mothers Are More Likely Than Working Fathers to Feel OverwhelmedWith moms historically having shouldered the burden of domestic responsibilities and care of children and loved ones—a pattern that COVID exasperated—it comes as no surprise that employed mothers are feeling overwhelmed, even forgotten.2. Mothers' Shift to Work-from-Home Dynamic Was More Drastic than Fathers'While many mothers left the workforce during the COVID-19 crisis, the ones who are currently employed—whether they stayed through the pandemic or are among the percentage of women reentering the workforce—continue to navigate changes in their work environments and work expectations. Barna's data surrounding these shifts hint at a lower level of satisfaction in working mothers' relationships both within and outside work, as well as lower satisfaction with their job in general, when compared to working fathers.3. Working Mothers Desire Time to Prioritize Reflection & Self-CareWorking mothers, more than working women without children in the home, tell Barna they could achieve better work-life balance if they “had more quiet time to regain perspective” (30% vs. 19%) They are also more likely than all other women to say better work-life balance could be achieved if they had “more opportunities to exercise” (30% vs. 18% working women without children in the home, 15% all other women).…Amid a season of transition, overwhelm and a struggle to balance personal and professional responsibilities, working mothers could benefit from the support of their community, including local church congregations. Yet pastors and congregants may not know how to best rally around working mothers in this time—or even be aware that they need to. Indeed, one in five Christian working moms (22% vs. 11% of working dads) says they are not attending church right now.Story: https://www.barna.com/research/challenges-working-moms/He is the God who sees/hears.Trusting yourself vs. Trusting God, the Promise KeeperTrusting the Flesh vs. Trusting the Spirit of GodFlesh vs. FaithEgypt (Land of Self-reliance) vs. Promise Land (Land of Resting Faith)God is our rescuer/promise-keeper/Hero—God / Angel of the LordHe hears/seesHe shows up aware because he caresHe brings hope, despite consequences**Salvation isn't fixing the flesh. Salvation is crucifying the flesh. We are called to come and die to self-reliance. Leave Egypt and enter the Promise Land.Outline based largely on Kent HughesI. Human Chaos (1-6)A. Scheming (1-2)B. Fall! (3-4)Sarai's action parallel to Eve'sAbram listened to his wife (2)Sarai took Hagar (3a) just as Eve took the fruit (3:6a)Sarai gave Hagar to her husband (3b) just as Eve gave the fruit to hers (3:6b)And in both cases the man willingly and knowingly partookFree-fall! “God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption” Galatians 6:7-8C. Chaos (5-6)Logically Sarai was wrong to place all the blame on Abram…it was her ideaBut actually she was right. He was the patriarch. He was the head of the house. God had spoken to him, not to her. He should never have allowed the situation. Abram was truly responsible for the “wrong” (lit. violence) she was suffering.Abram should have taken responsibility here.Abram should have affirmed his love for her here.Abram should have sought the wisdom of God in prayer.Instead, he capitulated to familiar Mesopotamian ways.He allowed Sarai to demote Hagar from wife/concubine back to slave.Sarai mistreated Hagar causing her to flee. Hagar = run awayNone of these three were honorable in how they handled things.Abram was the worst. He didn't really care for either of these women.Neither woman had compassion for the other. Sarai was the worst. Both women were victims. Hagar the greatest. This all started when people failed to trust God's word. (Trust in God)Instead they tried to take matters into their own hands. (Self-reliance/trust in self)II. Divine Intervention (7-16)A. Divine Discovery (7-9)Hagar fled scared. The Angel of the Lord found her—a stranger; God himself. This Angel knew everything. Saw, heard, knew……understood…authoritative “Return to your mistress and submit to her”Why? Because of the future…B. Divine Revelation (10-12) - God initiated this.Out of 6 promises in the OT for descendants, Hagar is the only woman to receive such a promise.God honored Hagar with many descendants. Fruit of the Abrahamic covenant.IshmaelYou will have a sonYou will name him Ishmael because the Lord has heard (Ishmael - God has heard)He will be nomadic Bedouin He will be in perpetual conflict with others around him (Sound like Arabs?)Ishmael's promise is part of the Abrahamic covenant—not it's ownAbram's and Sarai's shortcut would impact our world for millennia causing oceans of blood. Sin has consequences. When we take matters into our own hands and get out in front of God, this is what tends to happen:We mess things up; troubleWe sin and sin has consequencesWe blame each otherWe divide or move away from each otherWe hurt and hurt each other (and ourselves)We damage the future and miss out on some of the blessingsWe grieve God and quench his SpiritC. Hagar's Response (13-16) - As a result of God seeing her, she sees God and…She named God and that place“the God who sees me.” “the well of the living one who sees me”She worshiped God. Instead of reveling in the good news God gave, she revels in God himself. She believed and trusted God. This led to her submission and obedience. She obeyed God. She returned and submitted to Sarai. She came to understand that God hearsGod seesGod knows my situationGod understands what I'm going throughTherefore, she trusts, obeys and worships God in the midst of her difficult circumstances.ConclusionThe consequences of taking matters into our own hands can be tragic and devastating. We cannot change the past. However, God's mercy and grace leads to forgiveness when we confess our sins and move forward by grace through faith in Him.Perhaps you find yourself in the wilderness right now. Perhaps you feel abandoned, alone, and abused.God hears.God sees.God knows.God understands.God reveals, guides and provides if you'll look to him and rest in his protection and provision. He is faithful.Jen Wilkins shared these thoughts as she wrapped up her thoughts on this chapter:Paul calls us to, “Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life. And then I will be able to boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor in vain.”(‭‭Philippians‬ ‭2:14-16‬ ‭NIV‬‬ https://bible.com/bible/111/php.2.14-16.NIV)The Lord reminds us in the Psalms, “He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name.” (‭‭Psalms‬ ‭147:4‬ ‭NIV‬‬ https://psalm.bible/psalm-147-4)“And each of you—we—are one of those stars as we shine like stars in the sky of this dark world as we hold firmly to the word of life. And then we will be able to boast on the day of Christ that we did not run or labor in vain.” —JWPrayOther notes:Outline Bible - Genesis 16:VIII. THE COMPROMISE BY ABRAM (16:1-16)A. The rationale for his compromise (16:1-3)1. The problem (16:1): Sarai is still unable to bear a son.2. The plan (16:1-3): Sarai convinces Abram to marry Hagar, her servant, in order to have a son through her.B. The results of his compromise (16:4-16)1. Hagar's marriage to Abram (16:4): After Hagar conceives, she begins to look down upon Sarai.2. Hagar's mistreatment by Sarai (16:5-6): After suffering harsh treatment from the frustrated Sarai, Hagar flees into the desert.3. Hagar's meeting with the Lord (16:7-14)a. The Lord advises her (16:7-9): The angel of the Lord comes to her by a well and tells her, "Return to [Sarai] and submit to her authority.b. The Lord assures her (16:10-14): The angel of the Lord tells Hagar that she will have innumerable descendants through her unborn son, who will be called Ishmael ("God hears").4. Hagar's mothering of Ishmael (16:15-16): She gives birth to Ishmael when Abram is eighty-six years old.Notes from Jen Wilkin's message on Gen 12-16We should ask ourselves two questions every time we study scripture:What is true about God here? (Knowledge of God), andWhat is true about me in light of what is true about God? (Knowledge of self).Gen 16Hagar was a female, Egyptian slave!Remember, Egypt is the archetype of self-reliance.Sarai— taking matters into her own hands. This was a legal way to produce a legal heir using your maidservant to bear a child. But it's illegal in God's legal system.Abraham listens to Sarai instead of God. (Reminds me of Eden)How much say did Hagar really have in this plan? She's a victim, though not blameless. There's a lot of blame shifting going on here by Sarai and others. (Like in Eden)Sarai was physically (not just verbally) harsh with Hagar. “Mistreats” (NIV) in v. 6*Why this extreme reaction?Because up to this point, Sarai knew that her barrenness could have been because of Abram instead of her. But now that Hagar is pregnant, she realizes it's because of her.So she bears the full reproach/shame/scorn of a culture that said that the only thing a woman is good for is bearing children. Her world crashes.16:8 God is gently drawing Hagar in…Hagar is extremely vulnerable now. She's safer with Abram and Sarai even.Plus God gives her assurances about her and Ishmael's future.“There are no minor characters in the Story of God” -JWApparently, Abram (and maybe Sarai) believed Hagar's story as seen in that Abram names her son Ishmael instead of coming up with his own as was his right and role.“And God said…” “and it was so” (pattern)—Story of self-reliance vs. Sovereignty of God—Trust in me vs. Trust in TheeMy other notesIn previous chapters, Abram listened to God and exercised faith. But here he listened to his wife instead of God and revealed his unbelief. Both Abram and Sarai tried to help God's promise happen instead of resting in that promise and waiting on God to work in his perfect timing. For Isaac came 13 years later when Ishmael could live on his own. (No father going forward was devestating)Sarai blames God for her barren condition. This is actually true as God is sovereign. (Rom 8:28 applies here) But she hints he's not good in doing so which is not true.Hagar is quite the victim here. And yet when empowered does harm back.God does not acknowledge Hagar as Abram's wife even though this was a legal path to getting a legal heir. She is still a slave in God's eyes.First mention of the Angel of the Lord. Theophany? Christophany?“When God spoke to Abram, he was identified the second time as the angel of the Lord (22:1,15).”Ishmael — God will hear. (11)Hagar — flight, run away (LCB study notes)“GO TO MY SLAVE. Sarai knew of the Sumerian custom of using a concubine to obtain a male heir in the case of a wife's barrenness. A concubine did not have the same rights as the wife.” (LCB study notes)“Childlessness was a great burden to women, for it was seen as a lack of blessing from the Lord. Hagar's pregnancy placed her in a more favored position.” Ibid“16:12 WILD DONKEY. A promise of Ishmael's eventual nomadic lifestyle. EVERYONE'S HAND WILL BE AGAINST HIM. Points to the hostility between the de-scendants of Isaac (the Israelites) and Ishmael (the Ishmaelites).”Practical lesson: “Whenever we run ahead of God, there is trouble. The flesh loves to ‘help' God, but true faith is shown in patience (Is 28:16). We cannot mix faith and flesh, law and grace, promise and self-effort.” BKCReferences/Bibliography:“Preaching the Word” Genesis Commentary, Kent Hughes“The Bible Knowledge Commentary” by Walvoord, Zuck (BKC)“the Bible Exposition Commentary” by Warren Wiersbe (BEC)Genesis 12-16 Message by Jen Wilkin from her Genesis studyOutline Bible, D WillmingtonLife Connection Bible, Lyman Coleman, study notesNIV Study Bible (NIVSB)ESV Study Bible

This episode is part 1 of the Fear and Loathing at Norwescon 41 with their friends Rusty and Calvin. Norwescon is a sci-fi convention that promotes “science fiction, fantasy, and science through the written word, art, and educational programs, such as the holding of a yearly convention where the public is provided with the opportunity to hear noted writers, scientists, and educators speak on various aspects of the fields of science fiction, fantasy and science and to participate in discussions, displays, and lectures involving these fields.” (From the Norwescon website (http://www.norwescon.org/about/#mission).) The show kicks off with the guys talking about how long they've been attending the convention. Calvin tells about going since age 18 and Scott talks about also volunteering at the convention. Discussion then goes to QR codes and the different ways people are using them with marketing. Brogan then shares that he's been going to the con for 22 years and Rusty a total of 20. 14:28 – The guys discuss the different types of panels that are offered at the convention in addition to the activity workshops that include sward and shield fighting and glass fusing. Brogan covers what the average cost is for attending and getting a hotel room for the weekend. He then dives into how important attending the convention over the years has been for him and they then cover Dr. Ricky, a previous guest on the podcast that has participated in Norwescon panels in the past. 27:23 – Scott talks about being a part of the convention staff and what happens during the monthly planning meetings. They then discuss where Rusty disappeared to and Brogan then turns the conversation to his favorite memories about the con. Talk then goes to the art room where people can bid on art submitted to the convention, parties during the early years of the convention, and how they have changed over the years with LCB rules that mandate how parties can be held. 45:15 – Justin and Scott talk about visiting Camp Bar in Tacoma on Saint Patrick's Day and doing s'mores at their table. They reminisce about other things they did there before it became Camp Bar, including many comedy shows, watching Justin on Wheel of Fortune, and the roasting of Brogan on his birthday. Rusty also returns and they chat about how much each of them have had to drink so far that day. Fear and Loathing 1 comes to an end with Rusty talking about the interesting conversations he's had with people at the convention, including a lady explaining to him how a house cat could beat him in a fight and people that believe in ferries. Brogan talks about the earlier days with vampires in the masquerade and the time him and his sister signing up for the slave auction. Stay tuned for Fear and Loathing 2 coming soon!! Thanks Rusty and Calvin for joining the guys for a great Norwescon 41 conversation! Special Guests: Calvin and Rusty.
