Eles são responsáveis por julgar membros da Polícia Militar e do Corpo de Bombeiros. De acordo com dados do Conselho Nacional de Justiça (CNJ), cada juiz e desembargador desses tribunais analisou, em média, 110 casos no ano. Em comparação, no Tribunal de Justiça do Acre, o menos produtivo do País, essa média ficou em 729 processos por magistrado. Além dos custos, os críticos à manutenção desses órgãos apontam o receio de que a Justiça Militar venha a agir de modo corporativista, especialmente em relação a oficiais de alta patente. Por outro lado, os defensores afirmam que os tribunais na esfera estadual ajudam a acelerar a análise de processos. Procurados, os TJMs não se manifestaram.
