The holidays are indeed a busy time. When we're busy and have lots of additional tasks and social engagements to manage, often the first thing that gets dropped is our own movement practice.Though it's easy to feel as if we don't have time, or can't justify taking time to exercise when there's so much else to do, the consequence of putting movement on the back burner is more overwhelm and holiday burnout. In this episode we'll help you redefine what's “enough” and how to take an all or something approach to movement (that's also joyful) so that you come through the holidays feeling calm and cared for and don't feel the need to start all over January first.Mentioned in the Show:If you're a woman who tends to feel overwhelmed and put yourself last during the holidays, but you WANT to prioritize your own wellbeing so that you can roll into the New Year feeling centered, rested and nourished and avoid holiday burn out and New Year's resolution regret - I have just the thing for you.Join my email list: www.radiantvitality.ca/email to learn about the Stress Free Holiday Solution - a 1:1 coaching offer that's super affordable and will easily fit into your busy holiday schedule.About the HostKim Hagle (she/her) is Certified Personal Trainer, Registered Holistic Nutritionist, Body Image Coach and founder of Radiant Vitality Wellness. In this episode we hear from Debby, who shares her story of what befriending her body has made available for her.Prior to beginning 1:1 coaching, Debby felt stuck and unfulfilled in life, and truly believed that her body was the problem. She thought that losing weight would allow her to find love, get her dream job, wear the clothes she wanted, travel - but felt hopeless because even after substantial weight loss, she still felt the same way.She struggled with emotional eating, bingeing and hid her body behind baggy clothes.Through coaching, Debby realized that it wasn't her body that needed to change, but rather how she thought about herself as a person. As she began to believe in her inherent worthiness, and started treating herself with the kindness and respect she deserved, Debby noticed that her eating behaviour became more nourishing, she moved her body more consistently and she started wearing clothing that she felt comfortable in, including wearing a bathing suit at the beach without a cover up, for the first time in her adult life! Not only that, but because of her new found self-confidence Debby no longer lets her body hold her back. She has created the life of her dreams and feels satisfied and content, knowing that she is worthy of having all that she desires. If you're ready for results like this, 1:1 coaching is the way. How intense)How do I know how to perform movements safely so I don't get hurt? And how do I motivate myself when I don't have a trainer or coach telling me what to do.In this episode, I'll explain why you feel so confused, and expose the “missing piece” that leaves you feeling lost and unmotivated when you don't have a plan to follow. You'll learn 4 practical tips to help you become your own fitness expert so that you can trust your body and yourself to make the best decisions about your movement practice.Mentioned in the show:- 5 Ways to Feel Healthy, Happy and Confident - without obsessing over the scale. “Pushing yourself” has long been seen as the objective behind exercise. But usually that comes from a place of wanting to fix ourselves - to burn more calories, to compete, to prove ourselves or in hopes that we'll lose weight. Having a negative mindset about exercise and pushing through is a sure fire way to kill all joy for movement. However, when we participate in movement as a form of self care, and have a healthy, growth based mindset about movement, it can become a fun way to connect with your body to play and have fun. Once you discover movement that lights you up and makes you feel amazing, then you can start to challenge yourself on your terms, which is the 10th and final principle of joyful movement. You can experiment with different things to see what you're capable of but all from a place of body respect and curiosity and growth rather than from a place of needing to prove or change ourselves. What you'll learn by listening:How to assess your mindset about movement - are you trying to fix yourself or to grow?Four different ways that you can challenge yourself on your termsWhat it feels like to challenge yourself in a body respecting wayWhy you NEVER have to do something you hate, even if your trainer tells you toNew to the Show? On this week's episode, we're talking about the 6th principle of joyful movement which is to stop relying on external validation. By that I mean fitness trackers, apps and even the scale to tell you that you are doing it “right” in terms of exercise. About 20% of people in north america wear a fitness tracker, but it's interesting to note that about ⅓ of people who own one will stop wearing it within 6 months and almost half will stop within a year. It seems that a lot of women struggle in their relationship with a wearable tracker. What you'll learn by listening:How apps, trackers and the scale are interfering with your joy for movementThe benefits and limitations of using external tracking devices. How to tell if you've got a healthy relationship with your fitness trackerHow to identify your body's own cues through the process of attunement so that you don't have to rely on external validation. For the majority of the people in this world, getting motivated to exercise or even beginning to exercise is difficult. But then there are a few of us who actually do the opposite of this… We exercise too much - we go too hard, too often. While moving your body and being physically active every day (or most days) is great, like everything else in life, too much of a good thing is actually a bad thing. It can be really hard to know where that line is sometimes - between good movement, wanting to challenge ourselves and progress - and going too far.Respecting your limitations means meeting yourself where you are at progressing toward your goal in a safe, body respecting way. It means knowing what you are capable of, what injuries or mobility constraints you have, and having a clear vision of where you want to go with your fitness and why, and then taking appropriate action to get there. What you'll learn by listening:The principles of progressive overload and rest/recovery and how they apply to making gains while avoiding overtraining or injuryHow to know that you're exercising in a safe wayThe warning signs of overtrainingThe concept of body respect and how to meet yourself where you're at in your movement practice.Mentioned in the show:Feel left behind by fitness? The gym police are the loud, obnoxious voices in our head that scream at you all the fitness rules of how you “should” be exercising if you want to do it right. They highlight everything that you're doing wrong, and make you feel terrible about yourself which often keeps you from doing anything at all. Gym police are thoughts; negative thoughts about our inadequacies and how we don't measure up. The thing is most of the negative thoughts shouted by the gym police actually aren't true. The comparisons you're making to others and the rules you're buying into about how exercise needs to look - often they're not even accurate or true. The result of listening to the gym police is more shame and continuing to stay stuck. In this episode we learn how to recognize the gym police and their hidden agenda to take you down. We'll learn strategies to stand up to them so you can get out from under their thumb and into freedom. What you'll learn by listening:Discover that most of the fitness “rules” are just arbitrary and there's no one size fits all approach to fitness. Learn how to challenge the rules to create a game you can win.Understand how comparison is keeping you stuck feeling inadequate and shrinking away from your own greatness.Learn how your thoughts are creating the results, or lack thereof, that you're experiencing.Begin the process of changing your thoughts so that you can create the relationship with exercise that you desire. Welcome back to our series on the 10 principles of joyful movement. This week we discuss principle 3 - Just say no to punishment. No Pain, No Gain is the most common “motivation” saying from the fitness industry. As such, we're conditioned to believe that the only way to get fit is to push ourselves to the brink 5-6 days a week. But it's not working. Thinking that exercise has to hurt or that it has to be incredibly difficult is anything BUT motivating.Buying into this mentality might result in some short term gains but usually ends you up injured and exhausted, and inevitably giving up. In this episode, I'll give you tools you can use to know the difference between challenging yourself and pain and how to achieve steady progress towards your goals without dreading exercise. What you'll learn by listening:The difference between pushing yourself, and punishing yourselfHow to tell if what you're feeling is a “good hurt” or if you've crossed the line into pain.Tools you can use to change your mindset about movement so that it is fun, challenging, rewarding and SAFE!Feel left behind by fitness? Traditional exercise and weight loss programs typically focus on the physical body or aesthetics - using restriction and punishment to try to shrink the body in order to fit into the societal ideal. We are actually made up of four bodies - the physical body, the mental body, the spiritual body and the emotional body. And when we ignore the needs of the whole self and spend our efforts on “fixing” the physical body, motivation is a big struggle. You'll never love your body by hating on it. Body acceptance starts by acknowledging that we're more than a body and committing to being respectful to ourselves no matter how we feel about our physical body.In this week's episode we explore all the parts of us that make us whole, and how honouring each body through joyful movement is key to having a good relationship with exercise and a step towards body acceptanceWhat you'll learn by listening: Learn about the 4 bodies that make us whole. Identify ways that you have disconnected from your body because of diet culture. Explore ways to re-connect to the physical, emotional, spiritual and mental bodies through respectful movement that honours the whole self. Understand how the concept of body neutrality can bridge the gap from body hatred and body love.See Also: Episode 2- MotivationEpisode 3 - Reject Diet MentalityMentioned in the show:Feel left behind by fitness? Today begins our series exploring the 10 principles of joyful movement. Principle #1 is all about rejecting the diet mentality. Even though many women wouldn't identify as dieters, exercise is almost always viewed as a way to earn or burn food or purely as a way to change or control the size and shape of your body.Viewing exercise in this way sets us up for a negative relationship with exercise and leads us to think that exercise isn't “working” if it doesn't result in weight loss, causing us to ignore all the other benefits movement has on our body, mind and spirit. While you might not be ready to give up the desire to lose weight just yet, this episode will teach you how to detach exercise from that desire so that you can enjoy the journey and have fun with exercise.Studies and Resources Cited: Health at Every Size by Dr. Lindo Baconhttps://christyharrison.com/blog/what-is-diet-culturehttps://www.dosomething.org/us/facts/11-facts-about-body-image#:~:text=Approximately%2091%25%20of%20women%20are,to%20be%20a%20certain%20weight.https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/yo-yo-dietingThe 10 Principles of Joyful MovementMentioned in the show:Feel left behind by fitness? Joe “Dawg” Hallam is our guest on the show today, sharing the message that it's not just women who struggle with body image. As someone who has struggled with his weight for his whole life, and like most people believed that when he achieved the so-called “ideal” weight, he'd be happier, healthier and more confident. However, he noticed when he achieved the lower weight, he felt anxiety, rather than confidence; he felt like a stranger to himself AND he definitely was not healthier. In this interview, Joe shares how, through coaching, he has learned to view his body as the vehicle he uses to experience life. As a car guy, he now knows, it's not about changing the car, it's about taking care of and appreciating the one you have. With fitness culture constantly telling us we have to work out an hour a day, 5 days a week as hard as we can, if we want to “get results”, it's only natural that we would believe that anything less isn't good enough. If I had a nickel for every time I heard “well, walking doesn't count” or “stretching isn't enough”, I'd have a nice little nest egg.On this episode, co-host Lisa MacDonald and I poke some holes in these statements by discussing the benefits of walking and stretching, and share the straight goods about how much exercise is really needed to experience health benefits. If you struggle with the all or nothing cycle when it comes to exercise - this one is for you.About our Co-Host:Lisa MacDonald, our “sometimes co-host”, is a sister, friend, partner and mom of two boys.
