So often, when you listen to these episodes, you hear conversations with people far along in their experience with beer, wine, spirits, or other alcoholic beverages. We've had our share of brewers and owners who have been in the game for a decade or more. And in this conversation, we're invited to hear from Natalie Thurman, an up-and-coming brewer discovering what it means to go pro, create recipes, and learn all the time. Natalie was a homebrewer before she was brought on as a vocational brewer at Pittsburgh's Trace Brewing. Over a six-month period from summer 2023 through the end of that year, Natalie worked alongside and learned from a variety of staff at Trace, picking up tips, tricks, and an education that will guide her in brewing for years to come. It's all new—Natalie is a clinical research professional and registered nurse who's spent more than 10 years working in healthcare—but as you'll hear in this chat, there's a lightness and excitement at work in her life through beer. While we talk about her beginnings in homebrewing and building an interest in beer, I invite you to really hear the way Natalie talks about finding herself through her homebrewing and her work at Trace. Spending time at a brewery and meeting industry peers has seemed to unlock something special for her, and it's an opportunity you'll hear she's not taking for granted. This is a chance to hear what it sounds like to start something new and why it's so meaningful. It's an opportunity to hear about how the joy of homebrewing becomes the joy of professional brewing and all that's to come for Natalie and those in her orbit.

Co-Founder and CEO of Trace Brewing Company in Pittsburgh, PA joins us this episode to talk about the young brewery, his personal journey to founding Trace, how they are taking action to promote diversity in the beer world, and much more. A large chunk of our conversation centered around Trace Brewing's Vocational Program, which offers six month paid internships at the brewery to candidates from underrepresented communities and those who would otherwise encounter steep barriers to entry into the beer industry. Honestly, this episode is more than worth it for just that conversation alone. Plus, we played a Holiday themed general trivia game in Happy Fun Time, all about Christmas movies and music, in a sharp break from tradition. Through it all, we… actually didn't drink much because this was recorded on a Monday night. Do you love Beer Busters? Of course you do! Episode 154 : The Sara Show Part 2! Nick welcomes Sara back to the podcast due to Alex's extended hiatus. Sara kicks us off by talking about her trip to Chicago for a work conference. Lots of Zombie Dust and touristy stuff on down time made Sara explore the local beer distributors to bring home stuff. She told us the story of Spin, the ping pong place. Chewiee makes an entrance and can't stop sniffing the microphone. Sara brought home 18th Street, Hop Butcher, and Half Acre beers. They were all especially good. After the Chicago rundown, we talked about Eleventh Hour's anniversary on Saturday and raved about the BYS anniversary stouts. Nick gives an open invitation to anyone who wants to cohost the Weekly Re-Cap while we try to nail down a new permanent cohost. Nick tells the story of visiting Trace Brewing with Alex while Sara was out of town, to celebrate Pittsburgh Coffee Week! Sara tells of her love of Oktoberfest and the festbier, while we talk about the beer we're drinking. Nick struggles with the word and the aroma of the terpenes of Blockbuster Night Pt 1. Nick talks about his Tavour box for Barrel and Flow fest. Nick is excited about the reveal of the top podcast in Pittsburgh by Pgh City Paper (hint: We didn't win.) We pump up the DG anniversary which they share with Allegheny City Brewing. Then, we run down the Three Rivers Beer Week put on by none other than the Pittsburgh Brewers Guild. After we run down the #TRBW we talk about our early opinions on Midnight Mass. Sara wants KDrama friends and is very excited about Squid Game. We then talk about the comments of the week, thanks to @halloweenisforever Brian for suggesting some horror movies to watch. We go down the spooky rabbit hole and talk about a lot of pop culture TV. Nick saved some cans from Barrel and Flow and rates his favorite of the 5 in front of him. We wrap quickly with a shout to Fueled By Hops and our affiliate code (theweeklyrecap for 20% off!) Episode 135 : The Dinner Party Alex and Nick are back for a week where we kind of stay on topic. We start by talking about winter! From there we discuss the reopening of America and shout out Trace Brewing for opening for on-site consumption this week. We touch on Zelienople's troubles with open alcohol containers on borough grounds. We go in-depth with our favorite Food Network shows and what we love about food competition shows. Nick talks about Shubrew's can club. Alex talks about his experience at Eleventh Hour. Fueled by Hops takes over the conversation with #waxwednesday and #TIPAthursday and then we get into a very important discussion on glassware. Alex learns some things about glassware and the glassware community. After glassware, Nick introduces a segment about what you bring to dinner at a friend's house and this basically drives the rest of the episode. Obviously we lean on the “craft beer” aspect but this conversation keeps us guessing the whole time. We wrap up this episode with a shoutout to Hop Culture. (Juicy Brews 420 coming soon!) We wrap with the normal shoutouts and a good ole cheers! Thanks for listening! Episode 127 : Happy Holidays! Nick, Jake and Alex are back this week to bring you our holiday episode! We start off this episode by talking about some random stuff, but we soon get to our first segment this year : The Best and Worst of Christmas Movies! Jake goes first and has some “unpopular opinions” for all of us. Nick gives his opinions next and Alex takes the cop out response and sides with Jake's picks. The Christmas movie debate leads us down the road of watching the bad hallmark movies and straight to streaming holiday movies. Jake asks what actor we would choose to be the star in a Christmas movie next and this one spiraled out of control. Alex leaves early and Nick and Jake continue on as we talk about our giveaway featuring @creeksidebeer on instagram. Jake and Nick give their best and worst Christmas songs on the tail end of this episode. Nick takes a turn and rants about the Beatles for a while and really digs in on his stance. The last segment of the holiday episode is kicked off by celebrating Trace Brewing opening in Bloomfield and we talk about our best and worst gifts we ever received. We wrap up by again thanking our fans and friends for letting us do this podcast.
